  • Today we have Thomas' 1975 Tudor Oyster Prince Date + Day on the bench, a lovely jumbo-sized watch that has seen better days (or even decades). Join Stian for a full restoration of this watch as we ignite a flame war on whether Tudor is Rolex and discuss the virtues of cleanliness. Oh, and we'll pull out the rarely seen Rolex jackhammer tool!

    Wilsdorf was an astute businessman. He created watches of quality to different price points for the wristwatch consumer. Tudor as the less expensive little brother will always suffer image wise against the Rolex. For the people who wear a watch as a status statement, lording it over Tudor is a favorite Rolex big-shot pastime! I own a fancy Breguet 3317. In a room full of Rolex Daytona wearers, I am " like nowhere!"

    Thank you for this brilliant video, Stian. I could write a 10'000 word comment or essay on all the points you mention (agreeing and disagreeing), but here is the one thing I look forward to most: you doing a Jaeger-LeCoultre in the foreseeable future. All of my favorite channels are kind of stuck with Rolexes at the time, so a change to a lesser pimped-up brand (or a higher one: anybody in for a Patek Phillipe, Breguet, Lange & Söhne or Ulysse Nardin?) would be greatly appreciated.
    Again: thank you for this treat, even though I would never go within a mile of a Tudor, nor within a million miles of a Rolex.

    You sound much better, Stian, hopefully you're well on the way to a full recovery. Another masterful restoration, although I would have liked to have seen the pneumatic watchmaker's hammer that you used to remove the pendant tube. 😊 It's interesting to see how much variation in movements there were before the ETA 2824 design became the industry standard for Swiss movements. I like how they designed the automatic module. It is so small and simple and is tucked away off center next to the crown wheel. I guess that was to reduce the thickness of the movement. Really looking forward to seeing you work on the JLC.

    Rolex is worth retail. Definitely not grey market prices. I own a few of them as well as a couple of Tudors. My current complaint about my Pelagos is that they used class 2 titanium rather than the class 5 which is better for a few reasons. I guess Rolex didn't want to let Tudor release a class 5 titanium watch before they did. Now while I still love my Pelagos, it bugs me that micro brands are offering class 5 titanium watches for a fraction of what I paid for my Pelagos.

    What do you think about the recent in-house Tudor movements? I’ve been looking at one for a retirement gift to myself (specifically their GMT). I can’t justify spending the $$ for a Rolex. From what I’ve been able to research, the Tudors have made a quality movement.

    But we still have independent watchmaker, and some of them make it for built to last again. (it's just my assumption and my hope. xd)

    3:22 I’ve commented before that - unlike you - I kinda like the watchmaker’s marks on the inside of the watchback because it tells the watch’s history. But a red Sharpie on the movement? Oy. He probably puts bumper stickers on his new car. And ketchup on his bratwurst.

    It's a really beautiful watch! People who argue over which watch company is "better" or if one is a "poor man's Rolex" and what not are very simple/close-minded people, it's sad to hear that that's the level of thought of some people. Every watch has its beauty and place. Besides, Rolex is on the low end of high-end watches, so if you are one of those who feel the need to compensate for their low self-esteem by displaying expensive stuff, then perhaps a Rolex is not the right tool. I mean, it isn't really that expensive, it costs as much as a really cheap car. But I guess Rolex's brand standing can be attributed to their highly successful marketing.

  • @Maki_MSX

    When oiling the mainspring barrel, you use "breaking grease"?? I supose it reduces friction but makes movement no so smooth... don't understand why. I suposed that, the smoother the better is everything on a watch.
    It will be your fault (and here I include other youtube watch channels like yours) if I end purchasing a watch after decades of not using one! ;) Those 120€ small seiko watches are cool ...

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Maxi, thanks for watching! Breaking grease is used exactly to make the unwinding of the mainspring smoother and more uniform. The mainspring in automatic watches has a bridle at the outer end, which presses against the barrel wall. Given that the automatic module never stops winding the watch, there must be a mechanism to "let off steam", and that is achieved by making that bridle so that it slips a bit when the pressure is too high. To make sure this slipping isn't too jerky and results in either a shock to the train or a large drop in force, we use braking grease to smoothen the slipping.
      And yes, go ahead and buy yourself an old watch! 😉
