The PS5 is a price to performance monster. These consoles are sooo much better compared to current hardware than the last gen consoles were at the time its not even funny.
I got my PS5 during the preorder period for 499€ and it’s my favorite purchase in recent memory. The money I’d have to invest to have a pc that can run these games the same way as the PS5 is so so much higher.
True - it's remarkable. Still, the value is offset by the new £70 standard for games, along with the push towards digital and subsequent absence of resell value.
@@cascadesequence7307 But you CAN still buy physical. My approach for Forbidden West was to get it cheap (PS4 version in this case, because the upgrade to PS5 is free), play through it in a reasonably short time, as the hype still lasts ( I still took something like two or three weeks because I don't get to play each and every day) and then resold it for like 10 bucks cheaper on the secondary market. So in essence I paid 10€ to experience a great game for about 100+ hours. I'm currently doing the same with a couple of other games I bought second hand, which I plan to resell for nearly the same price afterwards. This obviously doesn't work for multiplayer games but then again, I'm having trouble thinking of a multiplayer game that came out in the last couple of years that is not free and also not absolute Garbage at launch that I MUST HAVE and spend 70 to 80 bucks on. By the time stuff like, say, Battlefield 2042 is actually worth playing, it'll be dirt cheap or even on EA Play. So although I still like my (aging) PC quite a bit, Gamepass Ultimate for my PC and Series X and PS Plus on my PS5 in addition to my new favourite Strategy for new Sony Exlusive releases means that I'm spending between 20-30€ on gaming per month, which is pretty cheap for playing basically almost anything you like.
The GPUs tested here are last gen GPUs though. 2080 was released in 2018. If it weren't for the pandemic and other factors decimating the market it would hardly be a fair contest comparing the console to actual current hardware (RTX 3000 and RX 6000 series) for the price
Those loading time clearly show why DirectStorage is required on PC in order to take full advantage of those NVMe drives. Also, it's nice to see PS5 performing pretty close to an RTX 3060 Ti.
loading time is already low, but still nice to take ofc, would be more interesting for future games design (ie. bigger maps without narrow corridors) but they must support old slow storage (hope they drop hdd support at some point) so not for tomorrow. Also performance is good but as Alex says, this game is probably not hitting cpu too hard and no RT use so best case scenario for ps5.
meh, 10 secounds is more than long enough. Not saying that direct storage is bad, no, its awesome, but if my loading times are less than 15 secounds, honestly, I don't care anymore, its low enough
I feel like this consoles of this generation are the closest to matching the generation's PCs in performance better than any previous generation of consoles so far, the performance of the PS5 and Series X are finally at a level where I would actually consider a console over a PC for gaming purposes.
You mean considering the consoles only compare to the previous generation of GPU's and currently can't compete with the majority of the rtx 3000 lineup which is on the verge of already being replaced. The new consoles are great, but only comparing to 2018 hardware in 2022 isn't an achievement
@@adrianhosein7698 so we're pretending like the chip shortage and scalper situation didn't also just have people spending 3-4 times the price for consoles with the consoles still going for $300+ more than their current value. You can spare the anecdote about how you got one for msrp, the majority of everyone who purchased hardware in the past year vastly overpaid.
Would have loved to have seen at least 1 current gen GPU from Nvidia and AMD tested like the 3060 or 6600 to see how their newer architectures perform in this title vs last gen.
Same here. I guess when dealing with consoles, its not fair to compare them to current PC builds even when they're fairly new consoles. Consoles will always be behind
@@CLabmusic What's your point? Many PC GPUs are behind many other PC GPUs. Not everyone has RTX3090 or better. 6900XT beats it in rasterisation. Or did last time I checked months ago. Maybe something changed. Though with DLSS,for sure 3090 wipes the floor with it. But 6900XT is so mighty, that there are very few scenarios that it would truly benefit from something like DLSS in terms of performance. Off course , few years from now,6900XT could benefit significantly from DLSS-like tech. Who knows, perhaps Nvidia shall licence the tech to AMD and Intel if it proves superior long term.
@@GameslordXY i was agreeing with the op that it would've been cool to see a 3060 or 6700xt(my card) in the mix or in a future video. I also was saying that I understood what choices they made for this video since a PC with a 3060 or higher would probably not be a fair comparison to a current gen consoles performance
This one of those unexpected games that I never thought I’d love so much, from the lore the characters and the soundtrack…. It’s much more than a UPS/ FedEx simulator lol
That's one of the things i really like about the Playstation 5. Next year it's about to get even more immersive as we will be able to physically feel the sensation of being headshotted because of the haptics inside the PS VR2 headset 😄 You might also even experience looking the purpetrator dead on right in the eyes in a online vr mp shooter only seconds before he blows your head off because of the built-in eye-tracking tracking the players pupils. This gen is gonna be something else lol
@@bobdole2184 Yup. I bought the starlight blue controller the other day to check it out on Ghostwire and it's pretty cool. I like how the raindrops and sounds feel on the controller but don't know how much I like the stiffening of the trigger when you use the bow. It feels like it would get in the way if you had to spam the arrows but the sensitivity is adjustable so that's nice. I suck aiming with a controller on first person games but can see it being quite immersive with Death Stranding. Will have to grab the update later and check it out.
@@lasarousi I paid 750 dollars for the disc one in 2020 and a PC remotely similar was 1500 or more, obviously you can do much more things with a computer
@@johnf.r6658 I can upgrade my PC for around 500 to outpace the ps5, you know you don't have to build an entire PC to update your gaming experience right? Anyways, the ps5 is the better value for the buck IF you find it under 500 and you are 4k ready. Although all sources also recommend dropping another 150 buckets for a good SSD for the ps5, even DF.
The price per performance of the ps5 is unreal never would imagine the distortion would get this high due to the PC parts and GPU price gouging but even before this happened the price performance ratio heavily favours the consoles
Unless you were/are just upgrading your GPU over getting everything new. In that case, even RTX2060 at its 300$ MSRP (In USA)would be able to beat , if not crush PS5 , due to DLSS. And if you were also upgrading CPU from something ancient to R7 2700X or R5 3600, it would cost you 500$ or less BEFORE prices jumped. In theory weaker than PS5,however in practice more powerful in most situations. For now. And no need for the very expensive Gen 4 NVME SSDs. 2.5" SATA 3 SSDs are MORE than sufficient at this point. So from upgrading perspective consoles aren't necessarily cheaper. It really depends on various factors.
Its sad that some PC gamers will read this comment as a reason to try to bash the PS5 instead of looking at the fact that the more powerful consoles are, the better multiplatform games can be on PC. One platform doesn't have to be bad so that the other can be good. End of the day people who prefer consoles are going to get a PS5 and people who prefer PC are going to get a PC. No amount of fanboy slander on either side will change these people minds.
Which is why I think a so called PS5 Pro or Series X Pro are just pie in the sky for now. Neither can get the components to fulfill current machines, plus probably selling at a loss
Honestly I am shocked. I like my PS5 even more now. For anyone with issues getting one there was a Discord where a guy watches stock drops on the PlayStation official site. I bought one direct from them over a year ago. No issues, no tax, no shipping. MSRP.
I always knew it, its basically just a bit lower RX6600XT except at the end it probably outperforms it easily 4 high resolutions on well optimized games since the RX6600XT has poor memory bandwidth in comparison to the PS5. The problem is I still don't have a PS5... I surely had quite a few chances at normal prices, but I really want is PS5 digital with nothing else included and they always shove me games, controllers and even crap like 5 year extended warranty that I don't want making the console to go to quite above 500€ for the 399€ console I exactly want. ps: I wish there was Sony direct here in my country cause I won the chance to buy a digital one from Sony Direct but it's from US so I can't buy it, I registered there and only after I read it was only for US, but I actually received a mail after some time but just ignored it...
Right? Exactly my thoughts as well! I just *love* that DF frequently takes it's time to showcase what the current benchmark actually is and provide *perspective* to everyone. This is super satisfying, because in my opinion, this usually gets lost on reddit or other places where enthusiasts talk about these results. A single bar or graph is never the answer =)
Yeah I am pretty stupid but I found the explanations, graphs, and comparisons really easy to understand. Alex nailed it and these vids are what make DF analysis videos the best.
Disagree, biggest failure was comparing RDNA2 performance, to RDNA1 (RTX2000 Series) GPUs only, and the 60 FPS cap on PC was a total mistake, this limited vids usefulness. What was shown was fine, but Alex should have also shown current gen on PC, RDNA2 is only in RX 6000 Series, and RTX 3000 Series was also missing for no good reason. The artificial V-Sync cap on PC was useless, having already found scenes that were not hitting that 60 FPS limit on the PS5, there was no point to using V-Sync on PC. Why? The GPUs used didn't hit that V-Sync cap, and when reached with with RTX 2080 Ti, it was an forced cutoff, result was no GPU better than PS5 are even shown. Why?
@@mikeuk666 Still fairly impressive for a $500 box. You cant even get a 2080 for $500 right now, yet alone a Ryzen CPU, 16GB of RAM, 4K Blue Ray player, M.2 SSD, wireless controller with haptics, etc. It’s an impressive little package for what it is.
@Salt Maker If we talk about cross platform titles, I'm sure that if you can run something on PS5, you will able to run on an RTX 2080 Super, if for you will be enough the "console" quality. And the RTX 2080 Super already far superior in Ray Tracing than the PS5. So in the end, as the rumors says, it will be a PS5 Pro, to reach higher frame rates and better graphics fidelity.
@Salt Maker You are a crazy PS5 fanboy if you think 2080 Super will not be running games well 5 - 7 years from now. AND with the mighty DLSS. It all depends on how competent developers are.
Even on PS4 Pro its easily prettier than most of the entire library, but then again is mostly only drawing map, I totally loved the game though I never finished it just because near the end everything decay away so fast that I was even scared to play more since it would get to the point everything would be broken and I would have to spend so many hours fixing everything specially the online stuff, I wish it wasn't that screwed. Also I was aiming to get max level on all missions and I made most that way, but some are really beyond crazy to achieve such score and the more time I play the more stuff starts to decay and the more impossible it seems out of my reach to do such task 😵 PS: But the thing I really wished was much better would be to have much more human interaction and not being just mostly holograms of persons we sadly most never will see, really wish there was actual lot of human interaction instead ☹
Don’t confuse “pretty graphics” with actually a game being “good”. Probably one of the worst games ever released, focus on graphics and forget what actually makes a game entertaining.
Tflops aren't a good measurement of performance. If that were the case then an rtx 3060 would beat an rtx 2080. But the 2080 is any where from 10-20% faster in 1440p
Nothing really surprising here. Will be interesting to see how games specfically developed for PS5 will perform. Right now it's all still last-gen ports of games developed for an ancient architecture, so the true potential is yet to be utilized.
@@schwartzy65 It's not DLSS. It will get closer but it's impossible to match DLSS's quality because it relies on dedicated hardware components. Look at DF's Ghostwire Tokyo PC review, that game debuted TSR which is about the level you can expect of FSR 2.0.

Nice comparison but I wish there were some current gen gpus tested instead of last gen gpus since the current ones are almost also hitting end of life as well in a couple of months when the RTX 40x0 and RX 7x00 series release.
They won't be end of life when the new ones come out, they'll still be manufacturing the 3000/6000 cards. But yeah would have been nice seeing more cards, though you could just look at a benchmark for the game testing different cards elsewhere.

Not to mention that on release 40XX series is going to be VERY expensive. And finally - DLSS is prolonging the longevity of graphic cards so... Very interesting video, thanks for your hard work as always. I would have been interested to know how PS5 performs against RDNA2 PC GPUs though, which is supposed to be the same architecture. Also, I'm curious to know what model of 2080 you're using for the bench. If it's a Founders Edition, I think it's legit to say that a custom 2080 with higher frequencies "beats" the PS5 in that specific game.
For those, who mentioned DLSS on PC. 1) Sony reportedly is developing their own upscaling mode exclusively for PS5 of course. 2) FRS 2.0 from AMD will also be available on PS5 and according to the latest screenshot comparisons it's very close to DLSS.

9:03, one way to calculate that is just to watch the GPU usage of the 2080ti at a specific scene and you will see how much more % is left to hit 100%, and from that information, you can figure out how much that would give you in terms of fps.

Because of the issue he stated with vsync. PS5 forces vsync which impacts performance so to do a meaningful comparison you need to also enable it on PC. Doing so however limits the FPS to 60, so comparing PS5 to any cards that achieve 60 in the selected benchmark areas doesn't really tell you much besides the GPU is better than PS5. 3060 probably runs this game at a locked 60 in these scenes so we can't really know how much better it is running than PS5, therefore its kind of pointless to do.

F.Y.I, the DualSense controller works on the PC version! Haptics, resistive triggers, motion controls, the speaker, the whole 9 yards! Trick is, you need to use a USB cable, and you need to go into the game's Steam settings (NOT the in-game settings!) and under "controller" you need to choose "disable Steam input"!
I remember Gamer Nexus video around a year ago where he stated that PS5 gpu is around 1060 lol. Its then when i unsubed from his channel. Too much console hate.
Something seems very wrong with these results. Everyone who has studied modern GPU architectures can tell you that the PS5 GPU is much more similar to an RTX 2060 Super than an RTX 2080. I suspect the PS5 is using some kind of temporal upscaling or checkerboard rendering to achieve this performance. Don't get me wrong, it looks great, but the Oberon GPU is an RDNA2 GPU with 2304 cores running at 2233MHz and only 448GB/sec of video memory bandwidth. That is NOT capable of beating an RTX 2080.
The massive difference is in part, due to software development aspects. I can imagine that the performance win on PlayStation is due to Decima Engine being designed specifically with PlayStation APIs whereas, on PC the engine is being translated into DX12 instructions. This is just a guess. Also, Death Stranding Director's Cut on PS5 renders only at 1800p(favour perf mode) or at 2160p(favour quality mode) natively. There is no image reconstruction upscaling in use in "Favour Quality" mode
Would have been funny just to show the silly difference DLSS makes, would make a 2060 faster than PS5 in this game. This makes me wish more older games were made forward looking so you could run on newer consoles uncapped.
The TAA in console version is much better than TAA in pc version. Still way worse than DLSS but console death stranging TAA does not produce this aggressive shimmering on some foliage
@@MrInuhanyou123 its almost a pointless test considering its easier to find a 30 series gpu instead of a 20 series this comparison seems to be for shits and giggles the 20 series is pretty old right now.
I still wish the PS5 performance mode used DRS to still use highest resolution in low demand situations. there was no reason for it not to. it'd probably rarely be 4k native, but it'd often be above the base resolution of mode as well.
I guess this shows ps5 is around a 2080 in this game, slightly faster however also slower in that motorbike part, so I would say they are in the same ballpark. However in games more tuned to the nvidia architecture the ps5 might fall to a 2070 or a 2070/S possibly and this is without ray tracing. With RT and especially heavy RT, we would see the 2060S keeping up with the ps5 in this game probably. We always forget that there is indeed optimizations for AMD/Nvidia as well, this is noticeable in certain games.
Mark Cerny never said that less strain on CPU means max clock on GPU, both can run at max clocks, while being stressed. the power shifts only happens when CPU has extra power while running some simple tasks, so that GPU can have some extra power to sqeeze some more pixel.

For the money yes it absolutely is. But it doesn't compete with new RTX 3000 cards, let alone upcoming RTX 4000 cards.
But yeah would have been nice seeing more cards, though you could just look at a benchmark for the game testing different cards elsewhere.
lol if you think that release of RTX40 series will "end" the 30 series.
I really hope you do realise that VAST majority of PC gamers are still using 10XX series of graphic cards. Not to mention that on release 40XX series is going to be VERY expensive.
And finally - DLSS is prolonging the longevity of graphic cards so... No point of replacing 30XX cards for the next two years. (Then MS/Sony will most likely ditch last gen. )
@@Schizm1 You call a product ''end of life'' when they're no longer manufacturing them but maybe i should have used ''end of sale'' instead. Usually they do this a few months in advance to clear out old inventory before the new generation launches that replaces it.

9:03, one way to calculate that is just to watch the GPU usage of the 2080ti at a specific scene and you will see how much more % is left to hit 100%, and from that information, you can figure out how much that would give you in terms of fps.
Hi! How about a video analyzing the image quality of the performance mode of Forbidden West after the last patch? Would help us convincing the developers to further work on it, maybe even adding a second performance mode with less graphical details but more antialiasing.

You should have used the RX6600XT with 10,6 RDNA 2 TFLOPS.
Naja, das ist jedenfalls meine Meinung
What I don't understand, why are you guys not testing with current gen GPUs? The RTX 20 series is 3 1/2 years old. And the 40 series is around the corner! I would like to see some tests with a RTX 3060, 3060ti and 3070. Don't you think the 20 series is a little bit outdated?
Seriously? Have you deleted the past 2yrs from your memory?
You may want to have a look at Steam's HW metrics!
@@sushimshah2896 So, what? Why should I care about the Steam charts? It's still 3 1/2 years old. The GTX 1060 it's still the most used card on Steam. The PS5 has licensed a special compression algorithm, and it also has a different SSD controller than PCs.

This makes me wish more older games were made forward looking so you could run on newer consoles
uncapped.
What about when Ps5 gets super resolution?
The TAA in console version is much better than TAA in pc version. Still way worse than DLSS but console death stranging TAA does not produce this aggressive shimmering on some foliage
Would have been nicer to have current GPUs in this test.
They don't synch up well to PS5 due to being too stacked(higher vram by default, more rasterization ect)
Mark Cerny is genius ❤️
I guess this shows ps5 is around a 2080 in this game, slightly faster however also slower in that motorbike part, so I would say they are in the same ballpark. However in games more tuned to the nvidia architecture the ps5 might fall to a 2070 or a 2070/S possibly and this is without ray tracing. With RT and especially heavy RT, we would see the 2060S keeping up with the ps5 in this game probably. We always forget that there is indeed optimizations for AMD/Nvidia as well, this is noticeable in certain games.
Mark Cerny never said that less strain on CPU means max clock on GPU, both can run at max clocks, while being stressed. the power shifts only happens when CPU has extra power while running some simple tasks, so that GPU can have some extra power to sqeeze some more pixel.
it would have just been easier to use the nvidia control panel vsync, as it does not have the same problems as the ingame vsync
PS5 is a beast
But does the PC's director's cut have the 30 frames drop for certain cutscenes like with the original PC port?
