A local farmer in my community sells tickets for ~$100 USD per person and she limits groups to 8 people, one or two days a month to come cut fresh flowers and fill a bucket for diy bouquets while she makes everyone tea and cookies. My husband and I did it last year and it was well worth the money-one of the best days of my year and I’ve never had prettier bouquets. Anyway, all that to say you could charge people to come fill a bucket and hang out and paint or do crafts in the yard! You two are such lovely people ❤
Its really awesome that Marc and Aileen not only put the effort to feed themselves but provide for their community. Food and water is life, and nothing shows that you love your fellow man than sharing a seat at a dinner table
Amazing, beautiful and fantastic! What a great example of what can be done by reusing materials rather than buying new. This is the future, now. Thank you for showing it to us!
I LOVE THESE PEOPLE! They're building community, between the sharing that they do with people they know, and people they will never meet. All of the challenges we expect, and likely all of the ones we don't know enough to predict, will be more survivable and even enjoyable when we are acting in cooperation with each other.
It's so nice to see this being done in Ontario. We have so much potential here, yet there are so few who actually do it. Yes, it IS a lot of work - even growing just a few vegetables. And this year the rainfall was so crazy that just keeping up with the weeds can be a challenge. Kudos to Marc and Aileen! Well done. It is a labour of love, and wonderful that you share your harvest. This is why people need to live in community, so we can not only share the bounty but the workload!
This has been extremely refreshing to watch. While the farmer's market dream is still in the parking lot, it's great to hear about your active involvement in helping out local food banks -- especially at a time like this. All the very best!
You guys are amazing! There are countless many people who could try this with their yards and experience the joy and the health that it brings! You can even plant a garden on a balcony or a small patio! Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring others, and thank you Exploring Alternatives for sharing their story!
It's very true! Growing food, even if it's just a small amount, is super rewarding! Thanks for your comment and hope you're both enjoying the summer :)
This is like being back in the 70's and 80's, when backyard gardens were the norm and not the exception. Our North American culture has sadly disposed of gardens with the availability of all things fast food, so this is refreshing to see this type of living making a comeback.
Really glad this became a production, on TH-cam too* Bravo Marc and Aileen, really smart. I watched the shed being built on FB, the gardening, but never realized the scope and wonder of it all. Creative happy people make life interesting, fun, and inspiring. Thanks 'Exploring Alternatives' for producing a fine film.
Amazing! What a useful way of living, sharing with community and create a real interest in sustainable food production. Unlimited possibilities. Thanks for the movie and congratulations to your team.
What fun! We live like this, although we have far fewer resources, and consume everything we produce. A lot of great ideas, which they generously shared. I wish more people where we live used their land to sustain life in this way, so far we are one of the three or four in the area that have a food garden on our urban property.
What a lot of work! 😮 I love the sheds (very pretty and creative) and the cans air-warming system for the greenhouse. I'm surprised that no trees were planted to block the view of the neighbour's houses.
One thing I didn’t realise until watching this video is that when you have a large garden such as theirs you can’t really leave the property for long because the garden has to be looked after or it will die out or have pest issues. So you really need to be committed to have this kind of lifestyle.
Congrats Marc and Aileen! Beautiful garden. I am going through a similar experience and every day is a new discovery. Lots of work, but hey, no need to go to the gym!
That is incredible. I recently bought a 3rd of an acre and have wondered if I could do a micro farm on it so to see them have so much wild from just an 8th of an acre so so encouraging!
@@ExploringAlternatives thank you! ❤️ I’m just one person and I’m disabled so I’m not sure if I can do as much as these guys do,… it’s pretty intimidating but I’m trying to learn
For sure the scale of what Marc and Aileen are doing is pretty intimidating but I'm sure you could get the satisfaction of growing food in a much smaller garden. Starting small is a great way to learn and see if it's something you want to keep doing moving forward :)
@@offairhead Don't forget, there are always easier pants to take care of, e.g. annual vegetables and roots require a lot bending up and down and upkeep, but fruit trees only need to be planted, and watered from time to time. Also a lot of produce usually grown as annuals are actually perennials, so you don't need to replant every year! Tomatoes, pepper, potatoes, herbs, even one lettuce can give up to 4 heads each year!
My husband and I have almost the same setup. Minus the fruit trees. All my neighbors are watering grass. Such a waste of space and water. Love your setup!
Wow, this is so inspiring! Turning a small city backyard into a thriving micro-farm is such an incredible achievement. I love how you use recycled materials and sustainable practices to grow your own food. It's amazing to see how much can be produced in a small space with creativity and hard work. Keep up the fantastic work - you’re an inspiration to urban gardeners everywhere!
This backyard homestead is so inspiring! Producing tons of food right in the city shows what’s possible with dedication and smart planning. The full garden tour is a great reminder that anyone can grow their own food, no matter the space!
The section at [5:07] about starting small is so practical and easy to follow. Your video is truly inspiring for my journey toward building a sustainable farm. Thanks for sharing! 🙌
Super cool set up. I have a large vege garden but only spend an hour or so a week which is mainly harvesting. No dig layered garden with mulch stops weeds then have a proper tap timer for water. Can go away for a week or so at a time. Get the odd courgette to marrow or woody bean pods etc but I collect of my own seed so it works out. My challenge is storing food. You guys are doing well. This year I’m freezing corn straight from plant with leaves on etc as gear that stores well
instead of using "landscaping fabric" which is plastic that might contain PFOS and other plastic additives, you can use organic mulch like small rocks, grated coconut, coconut husk, etc. That way you dont contaminate your soil n plants with microplastic as those plastic garden fabric Photodegrade overtime.
Thanks for the detailed tour of this beautiful garden. It is truly inspiring. This feels like the proper way to live in this modern era, living in the city but still gardening.
It's not a project, but a lifestyle. In England I grew up like this. You are saving so much time by processing the food. Quality food. Well done. You could always cut back to a smaller area, but just think if you didn't have garden beds, look at the moving you would have.
When people said the solar-punk movement could start in all different forms this is what they mean!! If we can all aim to do a bit of this in urban life the day of tomorrow will truly be brighter. Also that DIY beer greenhouse panel is truly inventive!
This is lovely. Our garden starts well each year, then the rabbits, moles, voles, chipmunks and who knows what else starts destroying the plants. We’ll have to try the owls on posts. Funny thing is we actually do have real owls that we hear every night.
This couple have it all sorted and are so crafty and ingenious with their set up. Very inspiring :)

I love to see people playing in their own backyard. They show there are no limits to imagination. Two things I wish: that the size was told, and what is their climate zone...The watering system is GENIUS!
I love your garden. I solved my watering issue by using timers. I am on my own well so I don’t have water barrels. It allowed me to take a vacation. By maintaining my weeds earlier in the growing season, the weeds that did grow were manageable when I got home.
Just love this video, and your ingenuity in design & build. In these days of insane pricing you've managed to create a fantastic garden that's producing wonderful yields and looks great as well. Common sense and practicality reign in your backyard! 👍😊🇨🇦
Really shows that you need a community to make it work well. And how you can make one. I love trading and recycling. Can relate, shoveled 20 yards with two 5 gallon buckets when I built my garden 3 years ago. It was an experience I will never forget.
What an amazing and charming couple. It's interesting that they had this blank slate of a backyard and what they've been able to accomplish with it.
