It's easy to be the world's greatest bird photographer. All you need is a phenomenal understanding of lighting, composition and exposure, perfect field craft, an encyclopaedic knowledge of birds and to live to be 200 to hone your skills and there's a chance you could carry Arthur Morris's 3rd camera for him. The being a great human being who is gracious to all people who have come into your life and have true humility is a helpful bonus. This is the first video of this length that I have watched the all way through in one viewing. I usually have to get up and move around because of a condition I have. I was so intensely captivated by Arthur's stories and the way you interviewed him, allowing him room to talk, I totally forgot about any pain.
Artie has agreed to be our 100th guest on The Understand Photography Show! It will air live on the Understand Photography Facebook page at 4 pm ET on August 10, 2018 and then put here on our TH-cam channel and on iTunes as a podcast.
In listening to your relationship with your Dad hit a nerve I had with my father who like you I felt hated me for some reason. He taught me so much about practical things but I always had a cloud following me all my life as he would never ever congratulate me on my achievements which were many as like you I just had to please and achieve. I came under very strict teachers and a apprenticeship so long and involved but without monetary rewards. Un-like my brother who got himself a degree in engineering and was always rewarded by love that showed in many ways by my parents . I got promises but never any rewards. My hatred of my father was such that I could not bring myself to attend his funeral. I think of what we could have been to each other always. I’m now eighty years old and thank him and my mother for my longevity which i share with my wife Jean and our children and three grandchildren my camera and photography. Thanks for your openness of your life and tips. I do so admire you.
Need help / comment I usually shoot wildlife in Av mode with AI Servo, Back button focus (* button ) on my 7DMII with 100-400 MII lens. When the bird start from sitting position to flying, I wanted to use register recall sotting setting while being at Av mode for my BIF shot.settings which are set in Manual mode as 1/3000 sec, f5.6, auto ISO with expanded zone autofocus points. In other words, when I don't have time to turn the dial to select one of the three custom settings, I can just push the AF-On button and instantly achieve the same thing on the fly. But the camera just don't allow this. I register the settings while in Manual and then switch to Av mode. Once the settings are registered, they show up in the Register Recall settings menu, however, once I switch back to Av mode,Tv mode I loose the settings that I registered and it is grayed out in the Register Recal menu. Am I misunderstanding the intent of Register Recall functions ? Is there any other way to achieve this ?
Register recall will not override the camera selected shutter speed in Av nor the camera selected aperture in Tv. It will also not switch between the exposure modes; M, Tv, and Av. Consequently, pushing the button assigned to register recall while in Av mode will not switch your settings to a fixed shutter speed of 1/3000. JAYANTA BISWAS the only way to change the mode is with the mode dial. consider leaving the camera in manual mode for both stationary Birds and birds in flight.
"Going on vacation without a camera" reminds me of a true story. In 1940 there was a Danish press photographer who was going with his family to the famous Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen just to have a good time there. He wanted to bring his camera, of course, but his family said, oh please, Dad - couldn't you just for once leave it at home? And they managed to persuade him, so they all happily went to the Tivoli. Now you see, in the garden there's a small lake, and since 1887 they've had a real sailing-ship in it, looking exactly like an 18th century frigate, rigged as a restaurant - even to this day. The current Saint George III is 88 feet long. But that day the St George II suddenly capsized and sank! Allegedly it was too cheaply made and simply fell apart. Everybody made it out safely, I think, but there was the press photographer - an eye witness at the very scene. And he didn't have a camera! You bet he never left his camera at home again!
1/60th at 600 ??? I know its an overused phrase, but,,, "Jeziz Christ" !!!! Great interview of an astonishing man ! ( astonishing, in a good way) Thanks
Sounds like a disgruntal employee Knocking Canon only after he gets fired.BWAAAHAHAHA ! I've used Canon since 1978 they were the first of many innovations. In 1999 first image stabilized lenses my 28-135mm i.s. still works today on my digital cameras. First ae programmed camera, first custom functions in a camera. And the list goes on from there. They had super telephoto lenses up to 1200mm. Nikon only had up to 200mm. Nikon and Canon was used by photojournalist and fashion photographers. Sport and wildlife photographers used Canon as a whole. Even in today's digital Canon was the first of many. Like first full frame cmos sensor that they built on their own,and many more.

Thanks for your response. But what can be the solution to quickly change the mode without losing time?
JAYANTA BISWAS the only way to change the mode is with the mode dial. consider leaving the camera in manual mode for both stationary Birds and birds in flight.
Unfortunate not to have the caption option... :(
I wonder how to do that. Great suggestion. I'll look into it.
