Hi James... It was a tough run out for the tents first pitch... I think it survived.. Double checked for damage the next day and not a mark... ATB and thanks for the comments... Tom Another video up tonight at 7..
So much fun. I enjoyed every second! I was gutted I couldn’t get out for a camp myself this week so settled for a cook out in the snow. That is the beauty of TH-cam though. You can always count on living vicariously through someone else! So thank you Tom, great camp!
Hey, thank you for watching and commenting.... Great to hear you enjoyed the video and you at least got out in the snow. The conditions here just couldn't be missed even if the walk in and setting up the tent were far from ideal... But that's the fun and we well well prepared... ATB and I hope you get out real soon... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Hi Tom just found you channel , is your tent a hot tent am new to all of this and want do some research, and for me it is best to ask the people who are actually living it , take care.
Hey Graham thank you...It definitely delivered on the weather warning...The tents did great as there really was some weight of snow 🌨️ especially on the front flat vestibule.. It's the most snow for me too but was just a great experience... ATB Tom
Hi, yes the tent smashed the conditions.. Not a mark on it either after checking and drying it.. The wind just bounced off it too so another wind test needed to see what it can really handle... Tom
Tom, clearly the best possible test of the Jannu! After watching this no other tent comes close to the limits the Jannu can keep you safe and comfortable
Hi Stuart, great to hear your thoughts on the Jannu... I too think very highly of it and this was a great test on its first outing. I inspected it for damage and any signs of wear after the camp. Guess what... Not a mark on it.. All the very best Tom
Amazing footage as always Tom. What a phenomenal trip. Very tiring but I’m ready for another lol. Not seen many UK videos more extreme in terms of snow camping. The weather definitely delivered on this one 😀💪💪
Hey Gary, yes what a trip. Absolutely insane to get conditions like this here in the Mournes.. I cant wait to get out again too but a bit lighter this time.. Thank you for accompanying me for this one.... ATB Tom
Tom, not only epic, this particular trip has to be the most memorable of this winter. Yes, you said the equipment performed well, yet your extensive adverse weather camping experience also contributed significantly. What brand and model of snow shovel did you use? Yes, it is a Canadian question. 😉 Thank you, Tom!
Hi, thank you so much for thew super thanks.. Very kind of you. I also really appreciate your feedback on the video.. The snow shovel... I like to call it a spade... is a Black Diamond Deploy... 20 years old ha ha. it saved the day here.... Once again Thani you very much for your continued support... Tom
That was mental. My utter respect for you and Gary not only doing it but making it look so easy and comfortable - the sign of people who know exactly what they are at.
Hi Donnie, I hope you are well.. It was a tough enough camp but didn't produce any serious problems.. There are always a few things I could have done better but on a single overnight trip you can get away with it.. I never bring breakfast but here after the time shovelling snow and walk in and out in deep snow I was very depleted food wise.. But you just get on with it and a bit of hunger is no big deal when it's short term.. ATB Tom
Super video Tom. Great to see the Jannu perform fantastically well. My son isn’t far away from you - I’ll have to get him and my Jannu on the Mournes and join the club. Thanks for the video Tom, ATB, Paul
Hi Paul, thank you for watching and commenting on my video.. The tent did severe well especially as the vestibule is very flat.. 3 Jannus would be some outing so yes please.... Tom
I was camped out on edge of Tullymore that night in a Hilleberg Nallo 2GT, didn't keep ventilation a priority and so moisture was an issue in the morning
Hey John, I am sure that that was a great camp... Are you on Instagram or FB to share some of your pictures... Moisture definitely hard to manage in conditions like this. How did the Nallo do? Tom
Fantastic Tom, I’m sure you are still buzzing from the experience! That must having been an amazing night, you can definitely tell you where in your happy place!! I managed to get up Hares gap the next day, the snow was pretty deep in place so I’m sure you had a quare workout breakin the snow trail on the way down! Thanks for sharing yet another amazing trip.
Hi, thank you for watching....Yes still thinking about it as never before has this happened to me here in Northern Ireland... Great to hear that you made it to the Hares gap. I know the snow was good for a few days.. The walk out was hard as breaking trail the whole way and pack was very heavy. I also never bring breakfast so after 4 hours of digging and walking through the deep snow I was a bit depleted to say the least.... Tom
Hey Bernard yes it pretty much was a camp of a lifetime especially here in Northern Ireland.. Very seldom get weather like this and everything came together really well.. Thank you for watching and commenting on many of my videos.. All the very best wishes Tom
Hi Andrea, you are the expert at camping in snow.. You probably get much colder temperatures too.. I definitely made the most of the weather here... Hope you are well and great to hear from you.. ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Thank you, Tom. I might get more snow and cold, but the pile that you had that night was staggering. How much new snow do you think you had? It's hard to judge from the drifts up the tent.
Hey Thank you for watching and commenting. Great to hear that you have a or a few Hilleberg tents.. Love mine and they can take the harshest of conditions.. ATB Tom
Excellent video and spectacular weather. Gutted I had to wait until the next night to get up but thanks very much for digging out a great spot for our tent! Thankfully the snow held up really well and we had a great night too. Definitely nice to get to use your kit for what it was designed for and see how well quality kit works in harsh conditions like that. Thanks J
Hi John, yeah I missed sharing the experience with you and I know that you would have loved it. I really was surprised just how much snow there was over night. I had cleared the back of the tent early on to addd in a peg point but it all built up again by morning.... Great to hear that you made it to the spot and had no digging to do... Tom
That was some workout on arrival and especially in the morning Tom 😉 You looked to be in camp heaven with challenging conditions and great gear to cope with what was being thrown at you! You’ll be living on the fumes of that great night for quite a while no doubt 😎🤩
Hi Miriam thank you for watching and commenting so quickly.... yeah I burnt a few calories on that trip for sure and looking forward to an easy camp next time.... Tom
Ha! When I saw the weather forecast midweek I thought "I bet that Tom Heaney will be up the Mournes in the snow " while I was lamenting the rain and a balmy 17 degrees down here in Portugal. Love your channel. Top content keep it coming.
Hey Micky, good to hear from you.. Yeah I couldn't miss a forecast like that here in Northern Ireland.. Turned out better than I could have hoped for.. Best camp ever in the Mournes.. Tom
What an epic camp! This is ideal for me for a trip...90 minutes in and a snowstorm. Wow. The only challenge for me would be to decide exactly which tent I would want to bring with other gear. It's rare to get such a great chance to experience such a storm. Seems like a lot of work, but in a good way.
Hi, yeah I thought about bringing my Nammatj and I am sure it would have done fine... Not a trip for the Akto though as it would have been buried.... Never experienced conditions like these before in Northern Ireland... Had similar in Scotland and that was why I brought my snow shovel.... Tom
Wow! An stellar camp there Tom. Living my dream through your adventures. Hoping I can have a similar experience... one day. That Jannu looks the part indeed. Nice colour too. Say, what was for dinner the night before, and breakfast. I'm sure you burnt tons of energy plowing snow for 4+ hours. Battling extreme heat this end of the globe. David.
Hi David, great to hear your thoughts once again... Dinner was an adventure food expedition meal at 600Kcls and a protein bar. I dont like to eat chocolate or crisps etc... I normally never carry breakfast and on this occasion I also didn't have any... So a slight misjudgement to be fair and I was very depleted on energy but I couldn't complain and just kept digging.... The walk out was tough too going through the big drifts.... ATB Tom
Hi Amy, great to hear your thoughts on the video... I am sure you had a great nigh out and fair play making it to that location in the dark with so much snow.. Nice to have your tens site ready to go when you got there.... thank you very much for watching.. Tom
Great video, Tom! That looked like some pretty wet, heavy snow. Perfect for snow men and snowball fights. You were in your element with good gear that handled the weather beautifully.
Hi Denis, thank you for the comments and watching... Yes all the gear choices turned out really well. Especially the new tent and my 20 year old snow shovel.. Tom
This is fantastic. Tom. It looked like a brilliant camp! I was so jealous to see all the snow on the Mournes as I flew to Scotland. I’ve waited for years for a night like that!!! Glad to see the Jannu coped so well with the snow load. It looks like a great tent.
Hi Phil, I hope that you are well... It was an epic camp and what a way to test your tent on its first night out... Congratulations on summiting the Ben in winter... Awesome... Tom
Excellent Tom, so pleased for you that you got this opportunity. I just wish it was longer with more scenes of the surroundings and walk out. Looking forward to seeing more of the Jannu.
Hi Dave great to hear from you.. Yeah I could have made it longer but don't know if that would have added to the views as the video was structured around the tent and volume of snow that had to be dug out..
Priceless Tom. Glad you both stayed safe.. Would be great if you could do a video in the future of all the gear you used on that trip. Clothing especially along with all the bits and pieces that made you both comfortable and safe in those conditions..
Hi, possibly I will....l but honestly the time it takes on these videos... filming and editing and also getting back to all the comments has had me sitting on the fence for a long time now as to binning TH-cam altogether... I keep going hoping that the channel will take off (just like many many other TH-camrs) but it never does. Do I enjoy it? Borderline and not sure its the best use of my time... ATB and thank you for your comment... Tom
Hi Tom, loved this video, I'd actually thought about the Jannu before I bought the Soulo, it was just the weight that was the deciding factor....I've been really happy with the Soulo but I've found on the longer winter nights a bit more space would be a bit of a advantage so having watched a couple of your videos I thinking about getting one for next winter. ATP Tom, cheers Jim.
Hi Jim, great to hear your thoughts.. Definitely after having both tents the Jannu has so much more space and comfort... Its just the weight that makes it a tough enough decision between the two tents... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Hi Tom, great to hear your thoughts, I'll definitely keep my Soulo, I'm heading for the Gorms with it next week. But I'm to add the Jannu and have the 2 tents.
My last wild camp was in the Snow, but nothing like that in the Peak District! My Black Diamond Deploy 7 shovel, was delivered only this week, so so, pleased it was not in the conditions you experienced. Great video!
Hey thank you for the comments.. Yeah it was a special night but it was well equipped to deal with it.. Real fun and was surprised in the morning there was actually so much... ATB Tom
Tom, an epic and probably once in a lifetime Mournes snow adventure❄👍 Pretty much buried alright. I think Gary had less coffee breaks than you during the morning dig out😊 A stunning morning for all that digging. Awesome👍
Hey Gerry, thank you for watching and great to hear your thoughts... Yes once in a lifetime getting conditions like this on a camp.... Especially the sun the next morning.... Gary had much less snow to clear than me ha ha... Tom
Man, Tom that's a great camp and test of gear if there ever was one. You had a proper Hilleberg tent. Now you know what you got. Really like the green Jannu. I got my green Soulo in this week. I have serious doubts about the last test model holding up. You were safe and could have made it much longer if necessary. Safe inside is good. Hey, I use a whisk boom to sweep off mine some. You want to be careful with the ice and clean the bristles often. What kind of pack are you using? That's got to be a tough hike out with all the drifts. Fun in it's own way. You know you can warm up and dry out when you make it to the ride. Be safe. Some wet days when all that thaws.
Hi Sam, how are you doing? yeah I really love the new tent. Tension on the inner is amazing and the wind just bounces off it. Very little transfer of the wind to the inner tent so you are really protected from the weather. Definitely felt safe in the tent and no bent poles under the heavy snow load..The pack was the 3FUL Quidan Pro.. It's super light and very practical and very comfortable of single overnighters like this. I had a Granite Gear Blaze 60 which I actually sold in favour of this pack. Not looked back so far.... Tom
Strangely I prefer camping when it is cold, windy and snowing. I sleep so much better in windy conditions, all snuggled up. Good posting showing the conditions you had, brilliant going.
Hey I can't sleep 😴 in a tent if there is nothing going on outside.. You just can't beat listening to wind rain or snow. I usually only take my tent out if it's windy. When I saw the forecast for this night it was definitely not one to miss... All the very best and great to hear that you like these sorts of conditions.. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 My Pyrenean mountain dog loves the snowy conditions. She is built for it, so much fur insulates her. We live half way up a mountain in west Wales and Nuke, that's her name will sit and lay out in the snow for ages. The best thing is she loves to spoon me when I am in bed, she is a huge living hot water bottle. Loving your adventures.
@@thepagan5432 hey Nuke sounds fab.. I am mad about dogs but travel a good bit and couldn't leave a dog behind to do that. I have a little dog that I walk 4 days and then bring her back to the house for treats fun and games.. Love big dogs too... Been camping with a few dogs too and that's just insane company in a tent.. Hey thank you for sharing your experience.. All the very best.. Does Nuke like my videos?? 🤣🤣
@@TOMHEANEY100 Apart from Nuke we have another 7 dogs and 3 cats. We used to run a dog rescue, until the transport costs became ridiculous. We saved and rehomed nearly 100 dogs from eastern Europe. I would love to say that Nuke watches your posts, but she is often outside barking at the animals in the forest. Pyreneans are known for their barking/talking even at 3:00am in the morning, lmao.
Hi Neil, yes just like the ones we used to have back in Scotland many years ago... At least then we had two of us digging out one tent all be it the Ve25 was larger and we had even more to dig out. Great to get this in the Mournes though.... Tom
Hi Jeff, I have been out in colder but that's not to say it wasn't cold... Hey thank you for watching and I really appreciate you taking the time to comment.... Tom
Thanks again, Tom. Based on your Jannu videos I'm now in contact with Hilleberg to purchase my own tent as soon as they're available from production. (can take months). Interesting to see how well the red label poles were handling the strong winds. I was planning to add a full set of black label poles but based on this, I may not need them.
Hi another video up tomorrow night but the Black poles are out in force... I hope you dont have to wait too long on a tent... All the very best wishes Tom
Great timing with the video! I'm currently in Nepal together with my jannu and can't wait to be in some bad conditions like this. Really reassures me in my purchase.
Hey Tim great to hear you are in Nepal and going to get that tent tested.. It will hold up no problem at all I am sure.. I was really impressed with how it handled the snow here . Have a great Trip and let me know how you get on.. Tom
Hi Gary great to hear from you and fab that you enjoyed the video... it really was an epic night. Really impressed with thew new tent and what a night for its first outing... The Nammatj will definitely be gone soo. The lack of tension on the inner eventually got to me along with the fact that it is brute ugly. Functional but not easy on the eye at all.... Tom
Big like pal! Glad you enjoyed this crazy & epic weather lol and nice to see you having fun with your new tent, seems awesome. Maybe the one and only, no need to look further more for any better one? ;] Im very happy with my gear and tent also just need to do some mods to make it feel like mine and more personal ;)
Hi Gregory, thank you for your thoughts on this video. I think that I am content now regarding tents. Really happy with the Jannu. A few mods to do to it myself. Might try the reflective guy line if I can get Hilleberg to send me some..... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Haha mines are way too bright and reflective green so will change those to something less visible for my stealth camping and trail multi day walking.
Hey thank you for your thoughts 💭 and very positive feedback.. Camping in conditions like this definitely has a few potential problems but you just take your time and there is usually a way to overcome them.. Once again thank you for watching and taking the time to leave me a comment.. Tom
Really nice weather!, in a good tent!, the Mournes look amazing!. My old Macpac microlight or even, god’s tent, the old phoenix phreeranger eb would have collapsed under snow weight. I’d have maybe? given it a go in the phoenix? I enjoy you’re videos! Congratulations on the Grand Slam! I’m was Glasgow and have looked at the Mournes from Arran, on a very clear day : )
Hey Robin great to hear from you and your thoughts 💭.. I could really feel the pressure on the front zipper from the weight of snow that had built up on the vestibule.. No part of the tent though looked in trouble and it stood very strong.. The guy line points and design really supports the poles. There is a video I think from Eden Adventures showing a North Face Ve25 collapsed under heavy snow loads.. I think the exact location point of the tent relative to the wind and ground is important as Gary's tent had much less snow build up.. We were limited where we could pitch and had to make the best of what we had... Good to hear your thoughts on your own tents... ATB Tom
Brilliant Tom. Some weather to get through and great watching it happen. I was trying to figure out where it was you were at but with everything being so white it was hard to figure but at a guess I'd say close to one, if not both, of the Meel's?
Looked like a fun winter snow/winds camp. Nice to top it off with a comfortable night venturing well-prepared, with good decision-making, plus super sunshiny conditions come morning. It appears that hunkering down more protected really increased the drifting over of camp. Temps looked favorable... tho' observation wise, lots of humidity in that snowfall and finer grained spindrifting. It is in conditions like this that I give major considerations concerning the importance of tents with two entrances. One of the forerunners in lineage of the Jannu tent design shape in my view was a now vintage tent by Sierra Designs called Sphynx-2. On today's terms it would still be a viable 3+season, tight 2-person, with vestibule. It was an overall OK tent based on quality, size, weight, rapid set-up/take-down, and simplicity... until you pushed its geometry and dimensions in more demanding uncertainties. In those game-changer ways... it would greatly influence how, where, and to what orientation you'd best hope predict being optimized for extremes. Jannu is obviously a much better more aerodynamic 4-season... however, some of the scenarios in this video look somewhat familiar to ol' days and the Sphynx-2. Glad to see you guys prepared for winter conditions with shovels!!! YES!!! LOL!!! Some might be surprised to see just how often (how many videos out there) on youtubland exhibit ridiculous, unprepared folks total omission of shovels in the middle of winter.
Hi, great once again to have your detailed thoughts... A double vestibule tent would have some definite advantages here but the Jannu did great for a single overnighter.. A Keron 3 or Tarra would have been great but I cant carry another kilo of tent.... I had a slightly sheltered spot from the wind but this increased the snow drifting. I knew this would happen and kind of wanted it to to be honest but was surprised at how much snow there was as I never encountered it here before in Northern Ireland. As you say many of the struggles you see on TH-cam could have been prevented but few who watch are even aware of this. Its about staking the odds in your favour and having an enjoyable experience not just doing it to get the views on TH-cam... I kew from experience to bring my 20yr old spade..... Tom
Hi Peter, it's the 3FUL Quidan Pro. I really like it for this type of trip. Super light and very comfortable. The mesh netting on the front is really versatile too... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 I totally understand that Tom, sorry, didn’t mean to come across the wrong way, I’ve been lost in blizzards a few times, once when walking back from the bar, a 5 mile walk, taxi’s couldn’t operate, so probably have a bit of fear of the white outs 👍
@@McConnachy Hey no worries at all.. You didn't.. I just honestly have never lost my childhood fascination for snow but I totally understand that it causes many people hardship.. I am nice and warm in the tent with my stove roaring and a fat sleeping bag.. Best wishes Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 thanks Tom. Well I ordered a tent and it arrived last night, I thought the vestibule was an accessory, but it comes with ones (which I will use in campsites, but not up the Munros, as I need to travel light). The tent is……………………………………………………………. North Face assault 2. I set it up in the bedroom last night, just to make sure everything was complete and to see how easy or hard it is. Well all was complete, and easy to set up, and I lay inside it for a while, it was roasting! Just so you know, we heat the house with firewood, my bedroom is furthest away from the fire and tends to be freezing. Getting a bit late in the year for using it, but some big trips planned for the Spring and summer.
Hi Stig, thank you for watching and leaving me a comment... Been to the north of Sweden in winter but not yet to Norway... Yes would love to try camping there... ATB Tom
Definitely a fair amount of snow we didn't get that much here and was gone in a few hours.ive been looking at the jannu they seem sold out everywhere here but not sure if I'd have the jannu or the allak
Hi Craig, many Hilleberg tents are low on stock. I had to ring round a few retailers to find out stock levels and what was expected later in the year.. Not much about so I made the decision to go for this one and definitely dont regret it... Tom
Jesus that's some snow you got. Really buried in. Good there was two up you up there. The wind likely made the snow pack harder against the tents making it harder to dig out as apposed to loose falling snow
Hi, thank you for your comments.. Yes at one point I thought it had stopped snowing and had no idea just how much it drifted. It is always windy here in Northern Ireland so that's what happens when you get snow too... The snow wasn't too hard as temp just below freezing.. just so much of it. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 yeah I'm actually originally from Scotland but moved to Sweden a long time ago. Don't miss the wind at all haha. Keep up the good content!
Crikey - now that's what you call a 'proper' snow camp! What made you take the Jannu for this camp knowing how much snow was forecast to fall? I'm really surprised at how well it stood up to being almost buried, that's a great testament to the strength of Hilleberg's kerlon material, tent design and manufacturing. There must have been a serious amount of weight pressing against those tent walls! A fantastic experience for you but the pack down time the next morning was a little long ha ha. Great stuff Tom!! TFS :)
Hi Donna, Why would I not take the Jannu when Hilleberg themselves say "excellent snow-loading resistance". My Akto would have been buried and my Nammatj is up for sale.... Definitely some weight on the vestibule but it managed fine. Double checked for damage and tent is still perfect. Great pressure too on the front zip but it's heavy duty so again no damage or wear.. It really was an epic camp and I had no time pressures the next day so I could take my time with the digging... Hey thank you for this great comment.... ATB Tom
I remember in my youth waking up one morning in the Rocky Mountains to find my tent down on my face. I had heavy unexpected snow come in overnight. I remember unzipping the vestibule to have a huge amount of snow fall into the tent. I kicked my way out of the tent and stood up. Damn if there wasn't a person standing in 18 inches of snow fly fishing very near to me. The walkout was challenging due to the snow, trail angles, and the dirt on the trail turning into mud as the snow melted in the afternoon. Life was good during those times. I am now past 70 and foot neuropathy limits where I can walk and how far. I guess I find some solace in watching younger people go out and challenge themselves and thinking of my youth.
Hey thank you for sharing your experience it sounds awesome... I hope that the tent wasn't damaged and just popped back up into shape... The vestibule got it here too as it is very flat... I hope that you can still get a few camps as your not that old... This one honestly really took it out of me and I am also not sure if I will camp in these sort of conditions anymore.... ATB Tom
Great video Tom and the Jannu is a much better tent to be out in those conditions than the soulo simply because of the extra space with all that snow weight pressing those walls in. I haven't experienced snow loading in a janna yet but i did have a Salewa Sierra 2 which wasn't a 4 season tent but handled similar conditions to what you had here but in the Pyrenees and it never suffered the amount of condensation that i can see here but i guess it was because it was colder, higher and not as humid .....did you figure out how to pee through the roof vent by any chance :)
Hi Olan, The Jannu really lost very little volume but definitely much more to play with than a Soulo.... Salewa make some nice gear so great to hear that your tent did well.. Under these conditions the outer presses against the inner so really hard to manage moisture.. No problems though when just doing one night.... Tom
Hey, thank you for watching and leaving me a comment... Yeah I was a bit surprised by the amount of snow here.. Maybe bring the shovel into the tent next time.... It was epic though and I couldn't have asked for any more... ATB Tom
Yeah it's not as bad when I just use the tent on my own... I can shuffle about to keep my distance.. I really love this tent... ATB and appreciate the multiple comments.. Tom
Hey Tom. Well done! What an awesome experience being out there in those wild wintry conditions. That was certainly quite a snow dump. Glad you’re back in a Hille too. Lol. Was that your tent?
Hi Barry, of course it is my new tent.... What a test on its first trip and it passed with flying colours... No probs at all for the tent. Vestibule took some load of snow and poles never budged... I hope you can get back making films but I know how hard it is. Even this video has not got great views and I dont know what more I can do.... Tom
Thanks Tom, I decided with Jannu. It’s a fantastic and yet a versatile enough tent! Do you have any tips on how to make it even stronger on harsher conditions?
Hey Arda great to hear... I haven't rushed to make mine stronger but the most simple and easy one is to upgrade to 10 mm poles... It does make a noticeable difference but places a little more tension on the clips. The only other thing I do is use stakes from Big Sky International a mix of 6 and 7.5 inch as the Hilleberg v pegs don't have great holding power and the Y pegs can be sharp and cut guys or ground straps... I hope that helps.. All the very best wishes with your new tent... Tom
Great footage Tom. Looked like an eventful trip. Is there any risk with having enough air for breathing when the tents are covered with that much snow out of interest?
Hi Richard, I had some vents open at the top and the wind was circulating air. I checked in the middle of the night just to make sure though so very good point... Tom
Hi Graham great to hear your thoughts 🤔.. Yeah when I decide on a tent it's all systems go.,. Especially when there are not many about.. Still to sell the Nammatj so I have it, the Akto and Jannu. Abisko long gone.. Still have the Lanshan 2 pro too . Tom
'O MY GOD'! was my comment when I read the title of your video. I've been seriously looking at this tent but would use it to it's full potential? I was disappointed you didn't stay another night. It would have been interesting to see how you prepared the tent and campground for the next snow. Tom maybe you could say how you might have done this. Apologies for the blasphemous comments.
Hi Marty really great that you are enjoying my videos. There was a slight risk of thaw for the next night and that could have caused problems. I will push so far but not risk equipment damage just for TH-cam as I love my kit too much... I really pushed this camp regarding my own health limits and to carry another kilo of food for another night was out of the question. I had experienced the best of it so honestly another night just for TH-cam.. No thanks.. Tom
Hi Tom, Newly subscribed to your channel and loving the content/detail you provide on these tents. I’m thinking on purchasing a Janu for wild camping in the winter months in Scotland. How do you find the vestibule for cooking in when weather is less than favourable outside?
Hi great to hear from you and your thoughts regarding a Jannu. Vestibule size is a little limited usability wise as its cut very low. For me though using it on my own this is not a problem. its is also very easy to unclip the inner for even more space if needed. I have no problems adapting and making this work... I hope the this helps... All the very best wishes Tom
Top class video Tom! Especially in such surreal conditions 👀Learning a lot from your videos across multiple tents, really helpful thanks. I am looking at the Jannu myself now as well, quick question : with the sloped back on the tent what would you estimate or measure the 'real world' length to be on the inner? Taking into account the pad, sleeping bag and not wanting the bag in contact with the inner. I fear it may be much shorter than the stated 235cm in this regard? Looking forward to the next video!
Hi Tadhg, great to hear from you and your thoughts on the Jannu. Thankyou for watching many of my videos. Try 200 cm for a real world length IMO... Both ends slope inwards which reduces length front and back.. I am 6 foot 1 inch and its long enough for me though.. If your bag touches the inner that's ok it's just when it then pushes the inner against the outer that moisture gets transferred. The separation here is pretty good so no problems for me at all.... I hope that this helps. All the very best. Tom
Brilliant. When the going gets tough. You know the rest.

Hi, yes the tent smashed the conditions.. Not a mark on it either after checking and drying it.. The wind just bounced off it too so another wind test needed to see what it can really handle... Tom
Epic Tom. What a trip. What a tent ! That should be the go-to video for anyone interested in this tent,or the Mournes .
Hi Joe, great to hear from you once again.. Yes a trip of a lifetime and especially in the Mournes. the forecast really delivered.... ATB Tom
It is a red label, the black label should be better.
ATB Tom
You no you wanted that to happen lots of snow absolutely stunning
Yes that's why I picked the location and the night to go camping.. I didn't expect it to be quite as good.. Tom
Tom
Absolutely amazing Tom and the ultimate winter camping 👍
Hey Bernard yes it pretty much was a camp of a lifetime especially here in Northern Ireland.. Very seldom get weather like this and everything came together really well.. Thank you for watching and commenting on many of my videos.. All the very best wishes Tom
The only way to camp , the more inclement the weather the better the experience 👏👏
Hey Daren, I only go out in weather warnings if at all possible.... Thank you for watching and I hope the video delivered..... ATB Tom
Great video, Tom, and what an adventure you two had. It's the perfect time to go out camping!
Great video, Tom! I always feel secure in my Hilleberg, even in the heaviest of snowfalls. Looking forward to your next video. 😀
Hey Thank you for watching and commenting. Great to hear that you have a or a few Hilleberg tents.. Love mine and they can take the harshest of conditions.. ATB Tom
Wow, what an epic video Tom, brilliant. That was some serious digging you had to do there. Great way to workout. 💪😆
Hey Mark, it was an epic camp for sure.. I even enjoyed about half of the digging.... Tom
Very well filmed too, perhaps the biggest challenge. :-) !! Well done.
Hey Onno thank you for having a look at this. I hope it was entertaining.. Thank you for the positive feedback.. Great to hear from you.. ATB Tom
Wow that is amazing
You did well to get through that
Hi Tony, yeah a decent challenge for me and the tent... Tent took it better than me I think.. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 you did well
That was a lot of snow ❄️
Tom
Exceptional video and camping experience Tom, truly the epitome of Tom Heaney Adventure, nice new tent, God bless 🙏

Yes mate, my son uses my TH-cam and the pic is his as is the name lol, will call ya soon for a meet 🙏

ATB Tom
Brilliant video Tom! Loved it ❄️ Thank you for digging out the spot for our tent too!! 😆
Tom
Great shovel🤗 Michigan
Hey thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.. ATB Tom
Awesome... Tom
Great video Tom. Really glad you survived the experience!
Hi Tim, great to hear from you so appreciate the comment.. Hard to believe the amount of snow ❄️ here in the Mournes.. Tom
Just a bonkers amount of snow 😮 The weather the following day look beautiful though 👍
You are right.. At one point I thought 🧐 it had stopped and was disappointed.. I hadn't looked outside the tent at that moment though...
Tom
Great video! Serious snow there! I was camping myself in Wicklow and definitely the most snow I've seen in a few years.

Hi Stuart, almost once in a lifetime conditions for the Mournes.. Would have been a good test for the Abisko..
Thanks for sharing Tom! You're well prepared for these winter overnighters! Have you ever dug a snowhole for a winter overnighter?
Hi Stuart just once in the Pyrenees.. Kind of more of a pit than a proper snow hole... Always had a tent to hand.....

Hi Tom.
Great snow camp, tent was ace at holding up the snow load.

Yes it was! an absolute tank resistant against all that snow.. Especially the vestibule which took some weight.... Tom
My last wild camp was in the Snow, but nothing like that in the Peak District! My Black Diamond Deploy 7 shovel, was delivered only this week, so so, pleased it was not in the conditions you experienced. Great video!

Definitely not click bait. That tent was proper buried! What an adventure.
Hey Derek thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment.. Great to hear from you and that you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Tom
Tom
Way to go Mandingo. You know it makes total sense! Rights!
Hey thanks for the comments and watching of course.. I hope you enjoyed the video.. ATB Tom
that's the most snow I've ever seen packed up against a tent! hardcore fellas!
Hey thank you.. Not too long to winter now for another repeat I hope but in a different tent.. best wishes Tom

Hi Gary great to hear from you and fab that you enjoyed the video... it really was an epic night. Really impressed with thew new tent and what a night for its first outing...
ATB Tom
Wow unreal footage

Now I get why you prefer strong tents Tom :)
Yes Kevin always been fascinated by the strong ones as I like being out in rough weather...
Brilliant Tom.
Some weather to get through and great watching it happen.
I was trying to figure out where it was you were at but with everything being so white it was hard to figure but at a guess I'd say close to one, if not both, of the Meel's?
Yr right, just up Slievenaglough before the wall on the north side of the wall...
Tom
Awesome👍👍👍👏

Tom

@@TOMHEANEY100 Can't for you. 🙂
Tom
my gosh what would you do if it was totally snowed over the tent and you was trapped, epic camp though and great kit
Hey, thank you for watching and leaving me a comment... Yeah I was a bit surprised by the amount of snow here.. Maybe bring the shovel into the tent next time.... It was epic though and I couldn't have asked for any more... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 fantastic camp and great memories
Ah the new hilleberg igloo model. 😂
Fair enough.., 😂☺️
@@TOMHEANEY100 it looked like a great camp, you nearly didn’t even need the tent. Wasn’t far off a snow cave 😂
Great video mate.
But the condens on the foot end is the disadvantage of the Jannu also in less extreme weather. You'll have to protect your sleeping back there.
Tom
I really like your choice in tents. The Jannu held up really in the conditions and it looks quite roomy as well. Keep up the good work Tom. 😁
Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 often wondered when I see tents so covered if there’s any risk to oxygen.
Great stuff Tom and what a beautiful morning the next day. You didn't hang around getting a Jannu 😄 Which tents have you got in your stable now?
No thanks.. Tom
Hi Tom,
Newly subscribed to your channel and loving the content/detail you provide on these tents.
Tom
Brilliant video mate, thoroughly enjoyed that. Out of interest did you get any drips on your inside kit/face 😅
Hi Bob, thank you for your comments.. No drips at all. Very damp but not a single drip.. Tom
