This is truly outstanding. 21 taking down 600. That's 28-30 kills each. That for sure earns them a place as one of the best defending units of all time. To cut 6 % of the enemy's army with just 21 men is insane.
The 21 Sikh non-commissioned officers and soldiers who died in the Battle of Saragarhi were from the Majha region of Punjab and were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, at that time the highest gallantry award which an Indian soldier could receive. The corresponding gallantry award was the Victoria Cross. The award is equivalent to today's Param Vir Chakra awarded by the President of India. My late grandfather, who served alongside Sikhs and Gurkhas in the Great War, always said that if he had to choose men for an attack, it would be them every time. He admired them as simply the best soldiers in the world. Just recently we've erected a statue here in the West Midlands to honour the 21 heroes, and ensure they are remembered here, in Great Britain as much as in their homeland. @@arghya4NE We have various groups here in Birmingham (UK) from both the Sikh and Islamic communities who do some wonderful social work, providing meals for the homeless and other troubled people on the streets alongside Christian groups like the Sally Army, Betel and St Basil's. They are great people, and I love them for it. Our city would be a poorer place without them, and all those who provide such care.
Gurkhas are a whole different breed of warriors as compared to otjer indians. There is a reason nepal is an independent nations while other much larger Indian kingdoms became British subjects. Got to read about their exploits during the Indian wars and great wars by an ex-officer. Stories after stories, those men proved how good they were as elite soldiers.

When my car broke down ,here in multicultural Canada, the only people that came to my aid were Sikhs. One of them even changed my tire, and then followed me home to see that I arrived safely. They are brave, valiant, and helpful people to this very day. Out of the thousands of cars passing me, only three of them stopped to help, and all three were all individually driven by Turban wearing Sikhs.

It is simple politics, Rajputs joined Mughals to survive. Sikhs were a very small population at that time, they chose to partner with the British instead of the Mughals. It was the right decision.
This was one of the most extraordinary show of courage and determination. 21 soldiers defeated hundreds of soldiers, never giving up. Sure, these propaganda vidoes was first uploaded in 2012 and since then they been uploading and uploading. The uploaders were asked to prove it from history and they could not do it. The whole story was made up from a slab in which 21 sikhs soldiers were killed in a bandit areas which was full of assasin in those days. Firs they were said they radiod but then there was no electricity even in the most advance place until 1925, then they changed their story to something else. And now new ones are uploaded to spread the propaganda. The Original uploader then removed the vidoe and was told to come up with evidence from history of ten thousands men? My father was born and raised in India, as the child of a soldier in the British military. If he went out, he'd often have a Sikh body guard. For the rest of his life he had a real respect and appreciation of Sikhs.
Sikh warriors always get inspiration from their tenth guru “ Gobind Singh “. He fought along with another 39 Sikhs( total 40) against 1 million Mughals. His 2 sons were also martyred in that battle but these 40 sikhs never bowed to the Mughals
Goro Gobind was actually freindly with Mughals - he like the Mughals were against Pathans (Afghana) and after the assasination attempt on Goru Gobind sahib he was treated by the Royal court of Mughal emperor of that time and operated by a British doctor.

The 36th Sikh regiment that fought Saragarhi was later rechristened as the 4th Sikh Regiment of the indian army and my grandfather fought in it and has many valiant legends of their own. He was on of the best shooters of the regiment often known to be a soldier who never missed the shot. He retired on the rank of Subedar and his name was Subedar Sohan Singh.
For anyone interested this was made into a film in 2019. Its called Kesari which means saffron. Its one of the most staunchest films I've ever seen. Really makes u admire the raw emotion those guys must of felt facing a force so great that death is certain. All 21 died with honour and bravery
One thing people will notice about Sikhs is that they always are true to their words and will do anything seriously. They respect their women and patriots to our country. They make up around 8% of the Indian army. I ain't sikh but out of all the Indian communities I have high respect for the Sikh people. They also give free food to the people at their langars and will open a langar whichever country they live in. The best thing is the Sikhs will always respect the local culture and language

The greatest warrior I will ever know was Sikh.. his name was jayakanesh khalimutu. And I had to fight him twice. My most worthy opponent. I hate to say it but I was scared to fight him. Both times. Even in defeat that young man was glorious. I was too young to appreciate who he was then, but looking back he might have even been the best human being I have ever met. Cheers to u Jay . Wow. As a kid in the 1970s getting into military history, the Sikhs stood out to me for what I thought to be at the time, funny "hats". As I read more and more over the years about these legendary warriors I am convinced that along with the Gurkhas, the Sikhs are some of the most ferocious, brutal, disciplined fighters on the globe and throughout history. Sikhs are not only fierce and brave in times of war. They are also very kind hearted in times of peace. They are the first to help during natural calamities.
The British Army was lucky to have such determine and courageous warriors. In the US Army now we have many Sikhs serving and they have display great courage and loyalty in Afghanistan and Iraq. This defense was more impressive and their defender were more outnumbered than those from the Alamo and Rorke's Drift.

History is full of these kinds of stories. The stand of the 21 shiks, the attack of the dead men, to the 22 men of the 394th at Lanzerath Ridge who held off the entire German blitzkrieg for almost 12 hours. All of these events, are historically significant and literally turned the tide of battle. Thank you for sharing these stories, so that they are not lost to time.

No doubts about the bravery of the 21 young Sikh soldiers. Sikh bravery is legendary! Just a couple of points to temper the video and British history in general: 1. History is written by the victors and in this case the occupying British forces. The 10000 number is widely disputed locally as the total population (including women and children) of the local Afghan tribes that participated in the revolt against the occupying British did not number 10000. So that number is highly inflated by all accounts and is more likely to be between 2000 to 3000 fighting men. 2. The British had access to superior guns that were accurate and that did not require frequent reloads (ones with magazines) whereas by all accounts the revolters had access to very few modern weapons, if any, and relied solely on overwhelming the enemy with numbers. 3. The revolters consisted of not just Afghans but also local Sikhs. The Sikh Maharaja that was deposed by the British was amongst the revolters and pleaded with the Sikh garrison to fight for the soil and not for the occupying British masters.
Sikhs on average are outnumbered 10:1 almost in every battle. And still win. No other people can do this for anyone else to even win against odds of 10:1 once is considered miraculous for Sikhs it’s the norm
This 'stand' and 'holding fast' of these incredibly proud, strong & loyal soldiers who fought as lions has always been one of my most respected and (if the right term?) favourite account of a stand/battle! So it is a real treat for me to see that it has been given the Yarnhub special makeover! You may or may not know the stories that are featured on it? But if you do or not? You can't deny that they are an enjoyable way of familiarisation with whatever one it is you watch!

This was made into a Bollywood movie named Kesri in 2019, and I remember crying in the cinema hall when all the soldiers martyred. Today again I feel emotional, such bravery in their hearts. Huge respect to the 21 Sikh soldiers who martyred while fighting for the fort

I'm not sure what kinda tactical knowledge and rules those leaders applied back then, but in modern warfare a commonly accepted rule is, in order to take a position you want AT LEAST 3 to 1 ratio of attackers for it to be potentially be successful. I can imagine those leaders were frustrated and embarrassed at the fact that it took 6 hours to take a position with 476 to 1 odds, especially considering how quickly the lost it after the fact. super interesting story though, sounds like it would make a great movie.. The 21 Sikh non-commissioned officers and soldiers who died in the Battle of Saragarhi were from the Majha region of Punjab and were posthumously awarded the Indian Order of Merit, at that time the highest gallantry award which an Indian soldier could receive. The corresponding gallantry award was the Victoria Cross. The award is equivalent to today's Param Vir Chakra awarded by the President of India.

My late grandfather, who served alongside Sikhs and Gurkhas in the Great War, always said that if he had to choose men for an attack, it would be them every time. He admired them as simply the best soldiers in the world. Just recently we've erected a statue here in the West Midlands to honour the 21 heroes, and ensure they are remembered here, in Great Britain as much as in their homeland. Thank you for covering their story, and helping ensure they will be remembered world wide.
PS - don't forget, all Sikh men bear the name Singh, which means 'Lion'. Truly appropriate - say no more.

When my car broke down ,here in multicultural Canada, the only people that came to my aid were Sikhs. One of them even changed my tire, and then followed me home to see that I arrived safely. They are brave, valiant, and helpful people to this very day. Out of the thousands of cars passing me, only three of them stopped to help, and all three were all individually driven by Turban wearing Sikhs.

I was a victory, since the Sikhs sacrifice gave the forts enough time to prepare for the assault, and the fight with the Sikhs had exhausted the tribals by the time they got to the forts
The Afghan aim was to capture the Three posts Saraghari, Lockhart and gulistan before the sun falls. But by the time the fort of Saraghari fell, the Evening had started. It is said that the religious head of the Tribe who led the charge wanted the Turbans of the 21 Soldiers to be removed (Turbans are the status of religion for a Sikh, no Sikh will ever remove his Turban, for them it's worse than death but the Tribal war lords and soldiers refused to Honor them because they had shown their might in combat.

Sure, these propaganda vidoes was first uploaded in 2012 and since then they been uploading and uploading. The uploaders were asked to prove it from history and they could not do it. The whole story was made up from a slab in which 21 sikhs soldiers were killed in a bandit areas which was full of assasin in those days. Firs they were said they radiod but then there was no electricity even in the most advance place until 1925, then they changed their story to something else. My father was born and raised in India, as the child of a soldier in the British military. If he went out, he'd often have a Sikh body guard. For the rest of his life he had a real respect and appreciation of Sikhs.

The 36th Sikh regiment that fought Saragarhi was later rechristened as the 4th Sikh Regiment of the indian army and my grandfather fought in it and has many valiant legends of their own. He was on of the best shooters of the regiment often known to be a soldier who never missed the shot. He retired on the rank of Subedar and his name was Subedar Sohan Singh.

For anyone interested this was made into a film in 2019. Its called Kesari which means saffron. Its one of the most staunchest films I've ever seen. Really makes u admire the raw emotion those guys must of felt facing a force so great that death is certain. All 21 died with honour and bravery

One thing people will notice about Sikhs is that they always are true to their words and will do anything seriously. They respect their women and patriots to our country. They make up around 8% of the Indian army. I ain't sikh but out of all the Indian communities I have high respect for the Sikh people. They also give free food to the people at their langars and will open a langar whichever country they live in. The best thing is the Sikhs will always respect the local culture and language

No doubts about the bravery of the 21 young Sikh soldiers. Sikh bravery is legendary! Just a couple of points to temper the video and British history in general:
1. History is written by the victors and in this case the occupying British forces. The 10000 number is widely disputed locally as the total population (including women and children) of the local Afghan tribes that participated in the revolt against the occupying British did not number 10000. 2. The British had access to superior guns that were accurate and that did not require frequent reloads (ones with magazines) whereas by all accounts the revolters had access to very few modern weapons, if any, and relied solely on overwhelming the enemy with numbers.
3. The revolters consisted of not just Afghans but also local Sikhs. The Sikh Maharaja that was deposed by the British was amongst the revolters and pleaded with the Sikh garrison to fight for the soil and not for the occupying British masters.
Sikhs on average are outnumbered 10:1 almost in every battle. And still win.
No other people can do this for anyone else to even win against odds of 10:1 once is considered miraculous for Sikhs it’s the norm
This 'stand' and 'holding fast' of these incredibly proud, strong & loyal soldiers who fought as lions has always been one of my most respected and (if the right term?) favourite account of a stand/battle!

This was made into a Bollywood movie named Kesri in 2019, and I remember crying in the cinema hall when all the soldiers martyred. Today again I feel emotional, such bravery in their hearts. Huge respect to the 21 Sikh soldiers who martyred while fighting for the fort

Sikh means to learn, Sikhism is about learning (the truth), and a Sikh is one who learns.
In a sense we all are Sikhs.
Plus following three main principals in Sikhism: Belief in one creator (universal energy), earn by honest means and share with needy. Also belief in humanity and equality (including women) and no magic or superstitions.

I'm not sure what kinda tactical knowledge and rules those leaders applied back then, but in modern warfare a commonly accepted rule is, in order to take a position you want AT LEAST 3 to 1 ratio of attackers for it to be potentially be successful. I can imagine those leaders were frustrated and embarrassed at the fact that it took 6 hours to take a position with 476 to 1 odds, especially considering how quickly the lost it after the fact. super interesting story though, sounds like it would make a great movie.. We were always proud of our Sikh brothers 🇮🇳🇮🇳 .The Sikh regiment is the most and highly decorated among the commonwealth forces during WW1 And WW2 they fought with such a ferocity the enemies literally had nightmares the regiment played a crucial role in defending western front in WW1 which stopped the enemy adavance into allied territory.they have fought in Burma ,North Africa and seen action throughout Sicily they are highly respected community in our country and also around the world.
