Who Were the 10 Sikh Supermen?

  • The 10 Sikh Supermen and their commanding officer Lieutenant John 'Jackie' Smyth took on a mission that seemed destined to fail. Initially Smyth refused to go, but when he was given the order every single man under his command volunteered for the task.
Their terrifying ordeal was to carry supplies across 250 yards of no man's land. With men trapped in a forward trench many of the 10 Sikh Supermen gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep the trench under British control.
It was an incredible act of bravery for which Lieutenant John Smyth would be awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions. When talking about that day he said "What kept me going was the courage of my men... I gave them leadership, and they gave me support. I wouldn't have dared to go back even if i wanted to with them treading on my heels".

Their history is a gold mine of bravery and valor. Just one instance, in the battle multan one of the main cannons was damaged and its wheel broke. In order to continue firing it would have to be supported on both ends. The sikh soldiers lined up and laid the cannon on their shoulders. Each time the cannon fired the soldier supporting it would be blown to bits. The commander was the first sikh to die this way, then the rank after him. The fort was won because of their sacrifice.

I have one too ,it happened with me
I had a accident with a local gangster and he and his men came out of the car to threaten me it's was like 12 vs me and i was 15 at that time , the thing is i crossed the road 3 sec late ,so they came to mess with me i said sorry and sorry but they didn't listen, one of them held me by my collar and started shaking me. Then there came that 6.5 feet guy with a Turban and a beard bigger than my career,he came alone took the had of the man ,told me to back off.and the faces of those man ,they didn't know what to do ,he came and one started pulling a knife (chura) to scare the Sikh ,my man had one too , what we all didn't know that the people nearby were Sikh people,in a blink of an eye , the gang member charged and the Sikh man got a cut on his hand , i don't know what happened to me but i took my heavy show in my hand and throw towards the attacker . But when i saw the Sikh man face ,i saw literally nothing,he didn't even wince from the wound (the wound needed stitches 2) ,he was stoic as a rock, than the Sikh told me to run . Because of how stupid i was when i thrown the shoe some of them seriously was going to unlive me.
I don't know how when but the Sikh attacked them with his bare hand (other is damaged) he handled 7 of them until one of them went to retrieve gun ,i literally froze when i saw that .but ,here came 7 or more Sikh out of nowhere with sword ,and KATAR all are 6 feet and massive amount of body. I saw a man with a gun get scared and he ran like bi..ch
Rajveer bhaiya,if you are reading this post today is my birthday and this is the 4 year mark of our story ,and thank-you for everything you did.
And happy marriage life to you

we don’t like to be called Indian and I am pretty sure after what Sikhs have suffered in the hands hinduvta (majority in India ) since 1947 guru Nanak dev ji also would have never liked to be recognised as Indian in front of the world . We preferred to be called punjabi and yes I know Punjab right now comes under the territory of India but that’s not by the choice of Sikhs living in Punjab . It has happened by commuting numerous amount of genocide from the last 70 years under the banner of operation blue star , operation shudi Karan, operation wood rose etc .
Our religious kings and Maharajas like Ranjit Singh, and Baba Banda Singh bahadar established KHALISTAN two times in the history, PANJAAB is / was / will be different land from rest of India .
It's culture, ethics and religion has core different traditions and faith .

@@babber2536 i do agree with what you said. Panjab and especially sikhs have been the shield of india, protecting the majority from both inside and outside persecution. Yet they got lied to and backstabbed as soon as they got the hindus independence. They should have listened to reason that the majority cannot be trusted. One crucial mistake has left the sikhs suffering for their own safe place in the world and being persecuted at the hands of the people they died to defend.

Its the culture of sacrifice that was started by the founders of Sikhism themselves. First founder Nanak was incarcerated by Mughal emperor Babur, the fifth founder Arjan was tortured to death for compiling the holy Granth sahib, sixth founder Hargobind was jailed by Mughal emperor Jahangir, ninth founder Tegh Bahadar was beheaded at Chandni Chowk, Delhi while the tenth & last Guru Gobind Singh fought multiple battles against then rulers, losing all four sons, and his mother in the process. And in the end he was stabbed by assasins sent by a Mughal warlord which later led to his death.
With such remarkable leaders, how can anyone calling himself/herself Sikh show cowardice in battlefield?

He also served in the 2nd World War. In 1940, he commanded the 127th Infantry Brigade as it fought in France and was one of the units evacuated from Dunkirk. He later commanded the 17th Infantry Division (India) against the Japanese in Burma. During the retreat from Burma in 1942, he wanted to set up a defensive line on the Sittang River, but was refused and told to hold the west bank. They were driven back by the Japanese and Smyth decided to blow up a bridge crossing river, trapping 2/3 of the Division on the east side of the river. This decision is believed to be the decisive moment in the Burma campaign that allowed the Japanese to capture Rangoon. The following day only 3,484 out of 8,000 men were able to muster. They had 550 rifles, 10 Bren guns and 12 Thompson smgs. Smyth was sacked and never received another post. He wrote a book about this disaster in 1979 called "Milestones" and helped changed the official history of the battle.

This is just one small example of the legendary Sikh bravery. Throughout history, our Sikh ancestors fought numerous such battles. The most remarkable thing is that the Sikh population was 1% of the total Indian population before 1947, and even in our state of Punjab, the Sikh population was just about 15%. Yet, their achievements on the numerous battlefields far exceed their small population.

The fact that all the men volunteered for what was essentially a suicide mission really hammered home how fearless these soldiers were.
