@EatmyDust1311 as in, if you get a catback exhaust, intake, and headers, you want to re-tune for those mods. If you bolt any power-adders on, you optimize them by getting a tune.
@indi3 those are fantastic buys on the cheap. Make it look like a generic detective car with steelies, tints, antennas and a search light, and people will get out of your way on the highway... tried it, awesome.
1980 Volkswagen Rabbit diesel. $1000, 50mpg, only thing wrong is shift linkage and blown suspension, which I've already replaced with coilovers ;) Next is an ALH swap, but that's down the road.
Indeed. It was a "first-call" conversion, used for body removal more than funeral services. They use minivans and SUVs for the same purpose today. Basically it was a black Crown Vic LTD wagon with paneled-over windows and no back seat (just a flat platform with casket rollers. It had a 5.0 v8, automatic, and posi rear. I put Cragar SST wheels on it and dual glasspack exhaust, and a nice little sound system as well. Miss that car a lot!
@EatmyDust1311 whatever, that's not the point. I'm just saying that you do your bolt ons first, and then re-tune. no point in getting a tune if there's no mods to tune for.
One year ago I got a 1985 Trans Am with a worn out but reliable 400SBC and 700R4. Aftermarket parts already on the car: Headers/exhaust, Subframe connectors, aftermarket rearend with 3:73 gears, tubular control arms, spohn torque arm, spohn panhard bar, a ratchet shifter and a few other minors. Paint was chipping, not bad though. Interior was missing headliner and had a cracked dash. Otherwise perfect. Car cost $1700 and had absolutely no rust, and came with a damn good story.
@EatmyDust1311 I'm turning my Raptor into the best camera car in history, able to get shots from absolutely anywhere. There's no point to spending the money on something like that unless you plan on using it. A dyno tune, for a N/A engine, is only useful if you do other mods, and then re-tune the car to compliment the mods. You won't get much out of a tune by itself on a N/A engine. I wouldn't fuck with it though, since SVT knows what they are doing when it comes to this truck.
87GT hatch with 311HP 346TQ to the wheels 2k. The good nice power, clean paint, and no rust. Now to the bad thrashed interior, no radio, no ac, no heat, and buggered up areas in the floor where someone cut a roll cage out.
In 2011 I bought a Chevrolet Beretta; year 1993. For 700 Euro's with a lot of spareparts. 4 cilinder, shiftbox (in The Netherlands) I still drive it, 220 000 km's, on the clock, still running fantastic. Altough I had some repairs for around 2000 Euro's, trough the past years. But I like it a lot!
Hey Matt Good episode. About a month ago i saw a black 1996 Mustang GT with 170k KM on it (just over 100k miles) sell for 1900 bux. perfect inside and out. came with a magnaflow exhaust, CAI, and a short throw shifter. Thats a hell of a deal.
E34 530 with aftermarket suspension, exhaust system full m5 black leather interior, new fuel pump, new starter, new plugs and battery. $1,200 Replaced angel eyes and front bumper. Drove for 6 months and sold for a profit.
almost forgot Matt, That is the only fwd with NO TORQUE STEER. The trans sits below and behind the engine. it's chain drive crank to trans with equal length cv shafts, so no torque steer.
Suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like bats all swooping and screaching around the car and a voice was screaming "Holy jesus what are these godamned animals!"
1984 Nissan 720 2wd for $250. Not fast, or even comfortable but man it was a blast to bomb around narrow forestry roads. It only lasted me 3 months but in the end I sold it for the price I paid. It was a free truck and I drove the wheels off it.
I bought my 99 Subaru Legacy sedan for $600 almost 2 years and 35000km (about 21000 miles) and i have barely had to spend money on it! Shes been amazing!
I got a 5 speed '88 Volvo 240 for 400 bucks that just needed a new LCA (28 bucks at a scrapyard) and a '97 Volvo 850 GLT (with a turbo!) also 400 bucks and it only needed a radiator (40 bucks at a junkyard).
I got my 95 Grand Marquis for $1200. One owner, old lady 134,000 miles on it when I got it. It needed no work at all, all I have done to it now is put new brakes, tires, alignment, and just the regular maintenance. My neighbor was nice enough to let me have it for cheap when my truck bit the dust.
I bought a 84 Porsche 944 for $400 and drove it home 60 miles on tires with the cord showing. Bought tires and brought it to autocross the next weekend! Totally underrated car in my opinion!
It's actually quite reliable. Parts are interchangeable with vw so parts can be cheap. With research and half a brain it's an easy car! Back then it was complicated but with forums and the age it's easy now!
Back in 05 I bought an 89 Mazda MX6 for $420 with 175k. I drove it for 3 years and it only needed normal maintenance items (oil, brakes, battery and tires). All the power options worked and even the AC blew cold. It was a bit rusty though.
I bought a 1994 Infiniti Q45 for $500. It was salvaged, and the previous owner did not have the pink slip, but I was able to register it and had it for over three years. I did put some work into it, but resold it for $1000.
I sold my 96 VW GOLF GL 5 Speed 2.0L I4 8V for only $750. I originally bought it for $1,200. But When I sold it I had put over 30,000Miles on it, in just a year. I had also had a front end collision which I fixed for only $200 and was two different colors. I recently found it on Craigslist again for $1,300, with a new paint job (I know it's the car, still has the same license plates and the same cracked windshield). It was a good car though. Kinda miss it.
1982 GMC Caballero Diablo (El Camino SS without the body kit) $250. Drove it for 200,000 miles and sold it for $750. (had 152k on the clock when I got it) 1985 K5 Blazer 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel $500 Drove it for 15k and rolled it off roading, chopped the top off it and replaced it with a top from another K5 that I got for free, then drove it for 80k. 1991 Toyota Celica GTS = $800. Rolled it down a mountain street racing. Got a gnarly scar on the back of my head from that one...
I have a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 in black with tan leather. Its front bumper is broken and the driver's seat leather is a cracked a bit but I got the thing for $2000! That's a hell of a lot of class for two grand, really goes to show you how far you can make your money stretch with a bit of research.
200$ 1993 Lincoln Town Car Executive. Once I got a Mk1 Ford Capri for the cost of a 6 pack of bud, of which I had three out of, I had to drag it out of a tree where the guy crashed and left it, the trade off was the three beers and I had to get it down...Ford tough, got it down and no body damage.
I picked up my 97 Saab 9000 CSE Turbo for $1400. Literally the only thing that doesn't work is the seat heaters. It's got nearly 200k miles on it and drives like new. Outstanding leather interior, 10 speaker Harman Kardon sound system, sunroof, etc. Why anybody would spend money on an old beat up domestic or Japanese econobox, I cannot fathom.
Black 95 dodge neon with 184,000 miles for 950, it eventually broke down 2 years later in 08 Red 87 MR2 with 102,000 miles for 700. It is still running today with no issues and now has 140,000 miles I recently bought a silver 94 camaro with 199,000 miles for 500. If you think about it you don't really need a car above 1,000 bucks. All you need to now when buying a cheap car is HOW to buy them!
All depends where you shop and who you know. 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5l auto. Had tiny tires, $400 cash. with 197k. Had it for 3 years 222k now. Blown tranny but still gets me point a-b. Everything works. Except reverse 1-3 in D with under drive I have 2-4th. lol All our cars have been under a thousand. 1979 Corolla 392 dollars. 2005 Kia Sephia $125 1992 Mustang 4 cyl $1!!! Believe it or not. 1992 Ford f-150 lifted $900 1998 Ford Taurus $900 1992 Ford Explorer $1000 Last 5-7 years.
Suburban and the '73 Eldorado are about the same length: 222" or 18.5' long. I own an Eldorado convertible that has 102,000 miles on it now. Replaced distributor, radiator, water pump, etc. since I've own it for ten years now. When the woman in a passenger seat of a late model Corvette convertible waves at me, methinks someone spent too much for his Vette. Sure, performance, the Vette is awesome, but for cruising around the city, nothing is better than the old Caddy convertibles.
i bought my bmw e36 328i for 1500 euro. (i'm from the netherlands) did a straight pipe on it suspension and the engine is stock and it goes pretty fast.
There's 1992-1998 Honda Civics for less then a grand. Those things literally run forever, maintenance is super easy, parts are dead cheap, giant aftermarket support, and get amazing fuel economy
I just looked up that CarsForAGrand website, and found a very tempting 190-series Merc, that I could clone to a 190E. Thanks a ton for that website. I'm sure the 24 Hours of LeMons guys will be happy to search through this website.
Cadillac El Dorado: Length - 223 in (5,700 mm) (1971-73) Engine - 500 cu in (8.2 L) V8 (1971-76) 425 cu in (7.0 L) V8 (1977-78) Chevrolet Suburban (1973 - 1991): Length - 219.1 in (5,565 mm)
I bought a 2000 Crown Vic P71 for $1300. It seemed like a good deal at first but the gas mileage was killing me. Wound up trading it for a '90 Honda Accord. Sounds like a ripoff I know but I needed the MPG.
maybe not the best car ever but i bought my megane 96 sedan for 200€ and the only thing i had to do after 6 months was just regular maintenance and reprogram the key for central locking. ( The guy who had it before me made it hard bcs he tinkered with the electronics and i couldnt properly do the programming sequence)
Picked up a 98 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel for.....Get this $700.00 dollars. Under 160k miles. Once got a 70 ford 2wd camper special for $50.00 dollars. Good deals are out there just have to look and be patient
yeah dude 454 isn't just chevy its GM they put it in multiple cars I hve an 80 Fleetwood with a 307 engine but that's a oldsmobile engine but its Cadillac component its how they tune the heads for performance compared to luxury cruising
james h Look, I've owned 4 classic cadillacs. 68, 70, 74, and 80. They never put chevy big blocks in cadillacs, ever. Look at the engine, the distributor is int he front, chevy big block distributors are mounted in the rear. And the olds 307 was identical to the ones they put in oldsmobiles, do a little reading on wikipedia. They started putting that engine in when the 8-6-4 turned out so poorly, and the HT 4100 was so problematic in the beginning. Aslo, you dont "tune cylinder heads" for performance or luxury. If anything that kind of tuning would be done with the camshaft
yes I know like how much youre valves open and camshaft rotation speed I know bro I work at a race and restoration shop owned by tatum racing as a top end mechanic you can tune heads by putting them on a flow bench to find air travel and valve width shaving and porting ok and my 1980 ELDORADO HAD A front wheel drive 425 they also came with 368s 350s and so on GM produced the blocks for all the main companies it was up to them what components they wanted in them for there specific applications for the vehicle they are going into because if all these companies made there own components like engines and trans and steering and suspension components it would cost to much for the company to have to produce a plant jus for each manufactures to build for that company like Cadillac or olds or Pontiac or buick or chevy or GMC it would cost to much to mass produce those components and bro ive known many people who are classic cars collectors and and even the people who drive our cars at the track jus because you owned a few of the cars and driven them around DOESNT MEAN YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT THEM its like Mercedes owners they bitch about maintenance and when things go wrong and they don't want to fix them there like ow ill jus sell it and go get another vehicle and they make the same stupid decision and go get a newer Mercedes like that's gonna fix the problem.
james h Hey jackass, the 368 and 425 were all based on the cadillac designed and built big black that debuted in 1968. Same engine, just de-bored and de-stroked. Cadillac built those engines, not chevy. The car in the video does not have a chevrolet or gm 454 in it, no way. I dont know what the fuck you're going on about, you're not my "bro", you clearly have never worked in a performance shop. I dont understand why guy's like you just keep arguing, and better yet, making shit up along the way. I dont claim to know everything about Cadillac, but I am certain of the engines that were available, and what was in the car in the video.
How about 800 Bucks for a 97 Neon Expresso! 135K miles, manual with the 150 HP DOHC, power everything, it all works, runs like a dream, still gets 35 MPG highway, and it only weighs 2400 lbs. I'm gonna put some slicks on it, strip it out, drop the AC, new shocks and springs and BAM! pocket autocross racer for $1800 that can beat a Miata.
I actually found an Eldorado on Craigslist for $1000! It doesn't say what year it is though, it may or may not be a 73! I almost got a 76 Deville for $400 but that thing was way too big for me (a foot longer than your Eldorado!) Also, there used to be a used-car lot in Philadelphia called Harry's Cheap Cars. Most of his lot was giant 70s Cadillacs, but there were also a couple 80s tin cans. Some were worth it, some weren't.
I bought a 1990 Ford Bronco with 170k miles off of my friend for 1 grand. He didn't need it anymore, and the only thing wrong with it is an oil leak off of the rear main seal.
i just bought a 92 s10 lowered 4 inches with all beltech suspension painted white and grey with green flames down the side. it has a 4.3 v6 and flowmasters and beats the snot out of all the camaros and firebirds and other trucks that ive raced and i only paid 700 BUCKS for it
'73 Eldorado length: 222 inches
'97 Suburban length: 219.5 inches
Mother of God.....
Got a 69 Buick it's 225 inches
@EatmyDust1311 as in, if you get a catback exhaust, intake, and headers, you want to re-tune for those mods. If you bolt any power-adders on, you optimize them by getting a tune.
I've bought a 97 crown Vic for $820. 99 crown Vic for $850, 2000 Ford Taurus $1000, 96 infiniti q45 for $1000.
The ulra-rare big block Chevy 454 with the distributor in front! Awesome!
Cars I have bought/driven daily for less than a grand:
1963 Plymouth Savoy: $950
1984 Chevy K5 Blazer: $900
1986 Ford Crown Vic Hearse: $400
1994 Chevy Caprice 9c1 (police pkg.): $1000
1978 Dodge B200 Tradesman: $600
1991 Toyota Camry: $500
1979 Ford Econoline 150: $100
1990 GMC C1500 Sierra: $800
You daily-ed a hearse? Lol that must've been interesting.
Miss that car a lot!
i saw a bmw z4 for less than most of those on their site
@EatmyDust1311 whatever, that's not the point. I'm just saying that you do your bolt ons first, and then re-tune. no point in getting a tune if there's no mods to tune for.
@EatmyDust1311 yeah. I take delivery the first week in June.
This was awesome lol I love revisiting these older episodes.
I got a $500 98 Tahoe just because the guy who sold it to me didn't feel like buying new tires for it
That I'm jealous of. I want a Tahoe, and they are so expensive !!
You don't need tires anyways
@babai91 You may be here a while, Bullrun doesn't start until the second week in July.
@gearheadd318 yeah, we're working on that, among other many things.
@elcampesino56 That's not bad at all. I assume this was an "SL" and not a VR4, right?
87GT hatch with 311HP 346TQ to the wheels 2k. The good nice power, clean paint, and no rust. Now to the bad thrashed interior, no radio, no ac, no heat, and buggered up areas in the floor where someone cut a roll cage out.

I still drive it, 220 000 km's, on the clock, still running fantastic. Altough I had some repairs for around 2000 Euro's, trough the past years. But I like it a lot!
@damianson yes, running that video next week.
@torch2014 no, I just don't know as much about Mexico as you thought.
@MrCooltoni video's not processed yet. check back later.
@rikwatson200 it was the 70's. people did a lot of blow then and didn't make much sense.
Hey Matt
Good episode.
About a month ago i saw a black 1996 Mustang GT with 170k KM on it (just over 100k miles) sell for 1900 bux. perfect inside and out. came with a magnaflow exhaust, CAI, and a short throw shifter.
Thats a hell of a deal.
This is by far the best of the several intro videos
seems like some good guys that know their stuff, ill definitely be visiting their site in the future
@billiardball001 you need to be on the list to get into the actual party but its in times square on July 9th
E34 530 with aftermarket suspension, exhaust system full m5 black leather interior, new fuel pump, new starter, new plugs and battery. $1,200
Replaced angel eyes and front bumper. Drove for 6 months and sold for a profit.
This is straight out of Fear and Loathing...
almost forgot Matt, That is the only fwd with NO TORQUE STEER. The trans sits below and behind the engine. it's chain drive crank to trans with equal length cv shafts, so no torque steer.
funny, I didn't see a chevy big block. I saw a 472/500 Cadillac engine.
LMAO!! Farrah is AWESOME!! The look on his face when he said he wanted to buy that cadillac was DEAD SERIOUS!!! ROFLMAO!!!
Suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like bats all swooping and screaching around the car and a voice was screaming "Holy jesus what are these godamned animals!"
best movie ever

+McCurvey Hastie I mean I have want through it by now lol but the timing belt just went with 225k+ but I just picked up another one! lol
It's actually quite reliable. Parts are interchangeable with vw so parts can be cheap. With research and half a brain it's an easy car! Back then it was complicated but with forums and the age it's easy now!

@peavyt15 The Eldo would be living outside I think.... But since I just bought something even bigger than an Eldorado, I don't need it anymore.
It would be a 500 ci not a 454 in a Cadillac! Cool car though!
1982 GMC Caballero Diablo (El Camino SS without the body kit)
$250. Drove it for 200,000 miles and sold it for $750. (had 152k on the clock when I got it)
1985 K5 Blazer 4x4 with a 6.2 diesel $500
Drove it for 15k and rolled it off roading, chopped the top off it and replaced it with a top from another K5 that I got for free, then drove it for 80k.
1991 Toyota Celica GTS = $800. Rolled it down a mountain street racing. Got a gnarly scar on the back of my head from that one...
92 chevy beretta. $280. runs and drives, just needed fresh fuel.
The alignment looks pretty good.
£750 for a pretty strong 1992 MX5.
The body could do with another coat of paint and the brakepads are due a change, but that was a steel.
I got a mint '85 GMC truck for $1000. EVERYTHING worked on it, it had no rust, and only 118,000 original Kms. 305 V8. Wish I didn't have to sell it.
I bought 3 cars for cheap.. A 94 integra for 1800, a crx for 1000, and a 96 corolla for 750 and they all worked perfectly
And a 97' pontiac Grand prix GTP with the 3800 supercharged for 400 bucks. Runs fine, brand new tires. Engine and transmission is going in my fiero.
Cruising in that car begs for a Mr. Microphone. "Hey good looking, we'll be back to pick you up later!" Same vintage, too.
200$ 1993 Lincoln Town Car Executive.

@meatloaf666999 hm. interesting. I'll email those guys and see if it's a different motor or if he misspoke.
@meatloaf666999 did he really say 454? It's definitely a 500, must have mis-spoken. That's definitely the original engine.
Black 95 dodge neon with 184,000 miles for 950, it eventually broke down 2 years later in 08
Red 87 MR2 with 102,000 miles for 700. It is still running today with no issues and now has 140,000 miles
I recently bought a silver 94 camaro with 199,000 miles for 500.
If you think about it you don't really need a car above 1,000 bucks. All you need to now when buying a cheap car is HOW to buy them!
I bought a '77 Dodge Aspen Wagon for $335 two years ago. Spent $300 more to get it running and road legal. Still driving it today.
@TheSmokingTire look forward to that. gti review too, in my opinion the best all round car money can buy
All depends where you shop and who you know. 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5l auto. Had tiny tires, $400 cash. with 197k. Had it for 3 years 222k now. Blown tranny but still gets me point a-b. Everything works. I like how the steering wheel is off to the side when going in a straight line.
I bought a 92 hardbody off this website for $500. thing fully works.. and has character
i got a mk2 jetta with 32k on the motor for a grand and i swear to you it is perfect no rust no body damage at all
@TheSmokingTire I paid 500$ for an 04 Poilce interceptor Vic with 190,000 KM. Its a great option for a 16 year old. Plenty of power. Lots of fun. :)
I bought a 74 El Camino SS 454 for 1000.000 in LA. I drove it home. Not a great drive but it runs and drives.
length of a chevy suburban is 219 inches.. length of the eldorado is 223-224 inches so it is in fact longer but just by a few inches

I got my 1997 f-150 with the 5.4 for a grand and its a fantastic truck
There's 1992-1998 Honda Civics for less then a grand. Those things literally run forever, maintenance is super easy, parts are dead cheap, giant aftermarket support, and get amazing fuel economy

@DaBluedude100 yes it is, buy and build a drag car!
Picked up an 86' Pontiac Fiero GT (ha ha, fiero... -.-) for a grand and had it checked over. It was appraised at 6500 bucks.
I consider that a win.
best deal i ever swung was a '71 Charger 340 4-speed for a '86 Cutlass 3.8 V6 with a bad rod.
great show as usual guys! Saw the gti in the into, did you guys review that?
I just looked up that CarsForAGrand website, and found a very tempting 190-series Merc, that I could clone to a 190E. Thanks a ton for that website. I'm sure the 24 Hours of LeMons guys will be happy to search through this website.
@davidmac2007 2 more weeks. GTI next week, then that.

Chevrolet Suburban (1973 - 1991):
Length - 219.1 in (5,565 mm)
Matt, hope to meet ya at the Bullrun Rally. Me and my dad should be going in his 03 Mach 1.
Well, The Eldorado's length is 222 inches vs the 2015 Suburban coming in at a whopping 224 inches. There you have it @TheSmokingTire
I got a '95 Mitsubishi Diamante for 2k. The brakes did need fixing (cost $400). But it's a great car.
'87 CRX HF, all original and never riced. $200, and it's average MPG is close to a prius, while being a riot to drive.
454? Someone put a chevy engine in that caddy? In 73 you could only get a 500 caddy engine.
That's a cadillac engine, the distributor is in the front.
yeah dude 454 isn't just chevy its GM they put it in multiple cars I hve an 80 Fleetwood with a 307 engine but that's a oldsmobile engine but its Cadillac component its how they tune the heads for performance compared to luxury cruising
james h Look, I've owned 4 classic cadillacs.
I dont claim to know everything about Cadillac, but I am certain of the engines that were available, and what was in the car in the video.
also a 2016 suburban is 2.4 I inches longer while the 99 body style is about 2.5 inches shorter
I got a r31 skyline ti (top of the line) for $1450
How about 800 Bucks for a 97 Neon Expresso! 135K miles, manual with the 150 HP DOHC, power everything, it all works, runs like a dream, still gets 35 MPG highway, and it only weighs 2400 lbs. I'm gonna put some slicks on it, strip it out, drop the AC, new shocks and springs and BAM! pocket autocross racer for $1800 that can beat a Miata.
i got a 1995 mustang gt for 2 grand all it needs is paint for the hood where the clear-coat is peeling
I actually found an Eldorado on Craigslist for $1000! It doesn't say what year it is though, it may or may not be a 73!
I almost got a 76 Deville for $400 but that thing was way too big for me (a foot longer than your Eldorado!)
Also, there used to be a used-car lot in Philadelphia called Harry's Cheap Cars. Most of his lot was giant 70s Cadillacs, but there were also a couple 80s tin cans. Some were worth it, some weren't.
I bought my 87 non turbo supra for $950
dang that's a good deal
98 chevy s10 4x4 everything works. the only thing thats wrong is the gas tank has a small hole on top so i dont fill it all the way. $700
I bought a 1990 Ford Bronco with 170k miles off of my friend for 1 grand. He didn't need it anymore, and the only thing wrong with it is an oil leak off of the rear main seal.
bought a 01 durango with 126k miles for 200 bucks just needed 2 tires and break lines and a steering shaft
1971 eldorado is about 220-224 inches, chevy suburban half ton is 222 inches long, so you were damn close there
Suburban length: 219.3 in
Eldo length: 223 in
I got a mint condition 1991 Toyota Celica GT-S (the wide body one) with a five speed for a grand as my first car.
i just bought a 92 s10 lowered 4 inches with all beltech suspension painted white and grey with green flames down the side. it has a 4.3 v6 and flowmasters and beats the snot out of all the camaros and firebirds and other trucks that ive raced and i only paid 700 BUCKS for it
