I fit mine with a thin led strip on top that is really bright and it floods it with white light and is much easier to read now. It's not perfect but better than it being damn near dark.

What causes the displays on these to go bad from heat is it actual solder breaking or is it the display

Looks like you got a good start on the board layout. Need one of those precision articulated arm CMM's to copy the footprint and hole layout. Boy, wouldn't that be nice. At the rate your going you'll have it up and running in no time.

Can you tell me why my display fades out the longer you run the radio the more it fades

See the tab sticking through the board on a ground pad, I soldered the one by the microphone jack. This fixed an intermitting mic connection and it fixed a no power on situation that happened 40% of the time. Something going on with the ground. Don't know what but My rig is fixed now, Chit Yeah Chit Yeah. Bought this new and it has the best ssb audio. I hooked it to a mixing board and studio mic. Started noticing it wasn't transmitting. It would key up but no audio. Moving the mic jack up fixed it. But it wasn't a real solution. Then the radio would be dark after a power up. DEAD. A series of moves would bring it back. uUn plug and replug usually fixed it. This thig got worse. Finally I peeped inside and soldered the tab and like magic, that did it. Works like new now. This rig is set as a base station so I'm not having the lights issue yet.

Has anyone compared the President Lincoln II the Grant II and the SSB980? Might be worth looking at them? I can not imagine Uniden reinvented the wheel with each one?

Common anode or common cathode, Thanks! Good Work!

Neither. your driving the actual crystal segments themselves.
100hz at about 2 volts peak to peak should get it to change polarity.

Nice, glad to see another 980 video!

+LeapFrog469 I just made a quick video to demonstrate how you can drive a passive LCD. the LCD display itself lacks electronics hence the signal generator.

Yeah, a momentary lapse in cognition, I was thinking LED displays not LCD! Thank You keep up the great work.

      Same problem

I have same issue, anyone here figure this out? I’ve seen several 980s on eBay with clearly the same issue, they show “turn on” as status but you can see the display is dark except one side usually on the channel side still barely working, mine works best when cool then as it heats or hot car it’s just blank!

Seems like it may be the DAC is bad, but haven’t removed to replace that yet and see

@@1ordmorgu1 I can't exactly tell you what the cause was because I don't know, but I know for one some guys are replacing the boards I couldn't find where to get the aftermarket board but that fixes it, next to fix the issue at least temporarily we pressed on the board for the screen until we found a spot that would make the screen fade and we soldered all around that area as well as resoldered the processor and that has fixed my issue at least temporarily
