My goodness... you're a real rocket scientist from my perspective as a non-engineer type "bean counter" turned country prepper. New to CB and just licensed HAM. I'm getting a 980SSB next week along with my mobile HAM gear. This blows me away. Internal amp? Home-made Channel King board? Sign me up! Can I send you a unit to trick out? Schedule is open to yours whether next week or next year - with whatever the options are of the day. I'd be in heaven having a good time having a tricked out unit to explore over time. From another perspective as it moves through frequency, it presents (from what I know) antenna/tuning challenges I'd have to get on top of in my learning journey as a new operator. Fun.
Absolutely love watching his videos. I've got this radio, but barely use it because of no traffic where I'm at. But great video I just need my radio adjusted and a good 35 watts Added.
I've gotta wonder though; the VHF receiver is, well, VHF. The antenna is NOT. How good can the reception be when the antenna is so far removed from the VHF band?...
I started my shop in 1994 & it’s name is mikes radio repair also. My business cards are somewhere but I’m laying in bed now. The channel 22 guys would call me early around 3am because they blew a transistor in a Dave made 16 transistor the last time , so the CB stuff had to stop. I only work on ham operators equipment now. Id really like to get one of these for my 980 old version with the amp in it. Id much rather push a button than flip a switch on the side of the radio to turn on the amp. I even have a second new version 980 I can donate to you. That channel King board is everything I ever wanted in the 980. I am glad that at least it exists somewhere.

I like my 980 SSB now the panel isn't bright enough to see hardly anything I almost wish it was a older one until I can get a new front panel or whatever
Problem is there made in China & also you have to modify the mic to get rid of the spit sound. Splash rejection is poor as you can hear bleeding from one channel to another. Can you get the clarifier to slide down more than 5 kHz?
@@nickcapps85 Far as I now there is another youtuber who made the boards. I had contacted him and we talked about it. He said that he didn’t have any made. And he was unsure when if ever he was going to make anymore.
Who was the other youtuber who actually makes them? Have several of the newer versions of this radio, and desperately am in need of at least 4 of these boards

I need help. I have a stock BC-980SSB 1st gen. Never been opened. I want to peak and tune and maybe a little bit more. I do not get any responses from Mike's. The only responses I get from other unnamed shops are that I bought a bad radio and not send any work their way. Since they don't want to work, I won't send them any. I live in Oregon, don't drive anymore so I need to ship it out to a shop that is trustworthy. Any recommendations?
I'm hoping somebody can answer me on here still this being old I just bought two newer versions of this radio and both radios I wiped the screen down with a clean microfiber towel and it scratched the face plate up bad on both radios and ate the black off the buttons does anyone know where I can get just that face plate at or would you happen to have one I got PayPal ready man
Unfortunately I don't currently have any of the modules and am not sure when Mark is going to make another batch of them. He is a full time electrical engineer and only makes these as a hobby a couple times a year.

Would have been cool to hear the rodger beeps, but the wx freq expansion is the moneyshot of this mod...not for the armchair tech, almost obsoletifies the scanner embedded, AM only rig, but to have light vhf monitoring on the SSB model, would be their top dawg rig. An entire actual l.e.d. or a mini dot matrix/bt to a phone display would be way better than exotic out of band freqs. Cool overview!!! 73's
Why do the sideband receivers on those "gurgle" (version 1) when close to a large transformer like in an analog Astron power supply? It is not noticeable on AM receive.
Must be an issue with your radio.I have mine sitting next to a 70 amp Astron RS-70M & I have no sounds that should not be there.I have Version 1 of the radio & I have no issues except the beep which I only have because I hate having mods done to any radio when they don't need anything done to them.

Awesome they make these how much these units run ??? Cuz I run 3 of these radios in both my z71s and the old ladies Tahoe z71 and my power is good cuz I run Palomar 250s with built in preamps in all of em and they really love the Hustler ICB 102" super whips with the hustler barrel spring installed on a good Wilson 304 stainless mounting lug with good 18'ft Wilson mini 8 coax even my jumper coax on all 3 boxes is 6ft mini 8 Wilson coax which works great really flat swr the only thing I like about my Stryker 955 I use in my semi truck and my General Lee late model on my home base/moble setup on a antron99 and my RCI base station runs a imax 2000 and a XForce 500 Four Pill Toshiba 2971s red dots on the General Lee and my President Grant II premium are both connected to the same box and antenna with a selection switch inline setup the RCI is my big station on it's very own imax2000 but I use my Grant II premium the most cuz the long range wireless mic they offer for them it's very nice part of uniden I have wireless bc906 mics on all 3 mobile 980ssbs I have and the grant II wireless liberty mic which is a bc906 mic just like the 980ssb bear cats use just has a different name for the 10-12 meter version dubbed the President Grant II

I bought a new 980ssb and the display was so dim in the day light that it cannot be seen at night it can be seen but not in the daytime my son now has it
How idiot resistant is this board to accidently using a frequency in between the official 11 meter channels? Can you rely on just looking at the channel number or do you need to check the frequency display?
@2:00 minutes you were talking about a radio that is 1/2 the power it should be . I bought a brand new Galaxy 2547 in the box still all wrapped up with bubble wrap . I took it out of the box and the wrap.Set it all up to do some serious listening to it and when I turned it on , NOTHING , so I took the covers off and got the shock of my life . The radio was a radio that was returned to Galaxy that got rewrapped and put on the sales floor to sell. I sent it back after calling them with my delimma and they sent me another one . Never had this happen before and I hope not to have it happen again .
I found an interesting technical regulation while looking for when the FCC legalized skip (I've got mixed feelings about that one). Section 95.987 (c) specifies final amplifier component power dissipation limits. 10 watts for solid state devices. It's sort of a self-correction solution for golden screwdriver adjustments. Crank up the power and eventually fry the final device.
Since I don't see a link to the makers website or contact info is it safe to assume this is a secret only unlocked by a patreon donation? If so no thanks. I f that's the case it could have been arranged between vendors rather than pay for play. Lol. No thankey.

back in the day when I was into C B. I shied away from Uniden because I thought they could not be modified or is it just this model?
A lot of the "early" (pre 1980 or so) Unidens can be modded for extra channels!! They also made the boards for the Cobras of that era.

Serafin Silva Board allows for extra frequency (channel) coverage and unlocking clarifier to adjust the Tx frequency as well.
