    Had a similar problem a few years back whilst travelling down the Thames. Ended up, upside down in the engine bay, desperately trying to get oil into the gearbox before we hit anything whilst going sideways down the Thames at Abingdon towards the main bridge😳
    Turned out to be a perished ‘O’ ring.

      Oh sorry to hear that! I had a pleasant trip through Abingdon, as you can see in my Thames videos.

    Great news that it was a relatively easy fix, and not costly, look forward to the Milton Keynes visit, I haven't been there for years, thanks JL, stay safe and well 🚢🚢🚢

      Well, there's a bit more to come on the drive issue yet but yeh the Mk vids should make a change at least!

    Hi Johny, Great Vlog, very interesting. Hope you have now sorted the propulsion issue out. Looking forward to your MK special. Take Care.

    Those gear box dipsticks are a nightmare to get to and see. Hope you get the problem sorted soon….whatever it ends up being. Great vlog again 👍

      It might even have been that I under filled it at the last service, by mistaking the markings.

      @@ProjectNarrowboat what about the gearbox though?!

    For the dipstick I sacrificed a wooden spoon from the kitchen: used the handle part to mark the levels with a permanent marker and use that once the original dipstick is withdrawn: its so easy to read and works a treat.

    Talcum powder on the dip stick makes it easy to read

    I thought you checked oil level with it not screwed in on that model gearbox. ...mmm

    • @ProjectNarrowboat
      @ProjectNarrowboat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Off the top of my head, I believe it to be the case that it needs screwing back in for a proper check. Just another faff to something that could have been so simple. Now to google it...

      @@ProjectNarrowboat I put permanent marker pen on the bottom part of the dipstick. ..Makes seeing oil level easier

    • @danielcameron8085
      @danielcameron8085 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's my thought as well with most screw in dip stick the level are taken from the stick resting on the top of the threads. Also best to run box in gear for a short time turn off leave to rest for a few mins then dip this is my understanding .

    Just cannot understand why boaters having dipstick problems. It's simple. Remove dipstick. Make one from material that you can see oil on. Same length as dipstick. File notches corresponding to old dipstick. Attach a large washer so new dipstick doesn't fall into gearbox. Threaded rod painted black is ideal. Or left as it is. Process is remove old dipstick. Drop in new dipstick check oil level. Remove new dipstick and refit old one. Clean new dipstick and keep in toolbox. Simple......Cheers from old George

      @ProjectNarrowboat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is undoubtedly a good idea - another little job for my to-do list. What a pity the manufacturer can't get simple things like this right in the first place though!

      @@ProjectNarrowboat Dipsticks are general sealed on boat engines and gearboxes. Stops oil out and water getting in in case of part flooded engine bays. As long as air intake is above water Diesel engine still run etc. Not sure about petrol. Big ships have air intakes above decks. Cheers from old George

    Hi just paint the bottom of the dipstick white 😊

    • @ProjectNarrowboat
      @ProjectNarrowboat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone will no doubt say that the paint will come off and contaminate the oil.

      I think I got it into my head that they are viscose coupled, but now I'm not so sure. Anyway all will be revealed in a future episode!
