#13 -We Can See finally our Barn! Renovation of an Old Farmhouse in Rural France

- The area behind our grand barn is fully overgrown with small trees and bushes because it hasn't been properly trimmed in decades. So, it's time to tackle this job. And we continue with the boys' bedroom; plastering the ceiling and walls are up. We also visited brocante and antiques markets in the Lot-et-Garonne and the Dordogne.

In august 2022 our family left everything behind and moved to France - not knowing where we would end up. Finally, after a difficult search, we found our home: a neglected old farmhouse. This is our story after living one year in France.
Renovating and restoring our old farmhouse, the old barns and the garden and land will take years. But in the end, it's about the journey and not the end destination. After all, you should always have something to dream about. Right?

I always imagine the dreams and hopes the "original" owners had for their lives when they built this farmhouse, and the people it's gone through to get to this state. Then, it makes me feel better to know that there are people like you who come along with dreams and vision and the desire to restore, rebuild and make it a home again. You help keep history and historic buildings alive.
We have that with every old building that dreams. Would be so nice if more people revived an old piece of heritage. We ourselves would have liked to have an even older or more special building. But our farm is a very nice start. 🥰

I think I commented in another video I do love the Brocantes so much treasures. That’s one job I can’t handle. When we’ve done plastering it never looks right. Your husbands very quick and did a great job.
Thanks, hè did it multiple times also in our old homes in the Netherlands so it became better. But it is difficult.

I think watching plans and visons become reality is the most satisfying thing about renovating, but it can be back breaking and if it's the only thing on your mind every day, all the time it's easy to burn out. You need to take breaks from it too, do something fun and unrelated and spend some time and money on things you want as well and not just what you need to, however contradictory that may sound when you are on a budget...
What you say is absolutely correct. Time to do things other than remodel is just as important. So we try to do this, especially since time already seems to slip through your hands so quickly.
Complete house renovation is a bit like giving birth. At the time you swear you will never do it again but when it's over, you forget all the pain and find yourself wanting to do another.
We have renovated our Normandy farmhouse which had no roof and bare earth floors and we are in our seventies!
Wow so cool to do that in your seventies. And thats sound like a big project not a small simple renovation. This is our 3 one. So it's very addictive 😅
I love renovating, I've done a really old 1960's apartment as my starter home and then bought a 1980's house and renovated that. I eventually built on my parents farm, but plans are to buy in Europe within the next year or two. I would love to be doing just what you have taken on. Great property.👍
Ohh quite a bit of remodeling experience so too. Where would you like to live in Europe and where do you live now?
I'm in South Africa, but I have an Italian heritage and passport, so that helps. I think I'm going to look into Italy and France, maybe Portugal. I have to be there to know and plan to travel through first.
Ohh italy is also beautifull. Been there also. And we had considered to move to the piemonte area of italy. But France won. 😊

If you leave branches when you are cutting down the bushes you can tie a strap or rope and pull out the roots with your tractor or car.

We too hear we usually don't finish very quickly at a market. And when Jeroen and I visit thrift stores we spend the whole day browsing for the most beautiful treasures.

Hi from stormy Brittany , this barn is going to be a nice building to play with. It is a shame that the previous owner did not respect the countryside and used this land as a tip. Did you learn to use plaster or are you a self taught man because it is one of the most difficult material to use. Nice for me to see the wonderful countryside you have in the 47 I really miss it. Can't wait to see the end of the bedroom reno. As usual very interesting💯💯

Here in lot en garonne also storm today. But not as bad as in brittany.
Jeroen taught himself the plastering. In our previous houses we also did some plastering ourselves. But we had the ceiling done then. Hopefully you will visit lot en garonne again.
