Petit Reve - France
France
We, Colinda, Jeroen and our 3 children Luca, Fleur, and Jules, have exchanged the Netherlands for the French countryside in August 2022. At that time, we hadn't yet purchased a house, only sold our house in the Netherlands.
In December , we finally bought our dream home, an old farmhouse in the Lot et Garonne, which could use a little love.
And now, we are busy renovating, beautifying the garden, and simply living our daily lives here in the beautiful French countryside. Because this is a very special period in our lives, and we want to show our children (later on) that they should always pursue their dreams, no matter how scary they may seem. We want to document this for the future, as memories tend to fade quickly.
And hopefully, our story will inspire you to pursue your dreams as well because after all, you only live once.
Love, Colinda, Jeroen and the kids.

19- Our French renovation story continues: creating a vegetable garden and crafting bedroom doors
In this episode, we are setting up our vegetable garden, which is particularly challenging this year due to the abundance of snails. Additionally, we are making doors ourselves for our bedroom.

I wish you both the very best of luck , looks lovely
Thanks, we do our best. You can see how we transform it in longer videos. 😊
I had a hard time with snails and slugs this spring--putting saucers of beer all around the garden really does help to get rid of them! Always a pleasure watching your videos.
Thanks melissa for the kind words, I think we gonna try that too. Because we must get rid of them
Love your videos
😊
As always it is so heart warming to see you all work together as a family. Growing vegetables is a learning process and is really down to your own personal experiences.
Thanks,.it really is. Last year it was oke. But now. 😅
Colinda how sad your work was wasted on the slugs and snails if you have any leftover copper pipe you could circle your best plants. It is alleged to give them an electric shock. A bucket of salt and a torch to find them in the evening is good but with all you do you might not have the energy. Happy to see you wearing gloves. Thankyou for the link I was looking to see if there was a post from you👏👏👏
Thanks Susie, for the tips. I haven't the energy for killing the slugs in the garden at the evening. So maybe the copper pipe is a good thing to do. :-)
Will reference this video for when I’m ready to start a veg garden of my own..thanks for the work you put into these vlogs🙏🏽
Thanks for your kind words. And good luck with your vegetable garden too.
Love everything about that veranda! The floor tiles, windows ❤❤ I also congrats you for teaching your boy how to paint and i can see that he has graduated😊👍
Thanks for your kind words, the veranda was the main reason we bought the house. It so lovely.
Amities Brandenbourg ❤️👍🇩🇪
thanks
That sounded like tiles coming down you might want to check your roof. Glad the boys like their room and hope they have moved in :) Vaulted ceilings might be nice for you if it works. Those boards could be reused somewhere not in bad condition but that insulation isn't good. Maybe in future you could make the barn into self service gites for guests ;) your pup and kitten are cute :) how are your kids adjusting to their new schools and bet they are awaiting holidays too. You can always make panels on the doors to reuse them if they are usable. I hope you will be able to find doors maybe try a reclamation yard or Leboncoin.
Fortunately, they were not roof tiles, but pieces of cement that had come loose from the walls of the attic. So luckily we don't have to go on the roof :-) We would like to create Gites, but unfortunately the zoning plan of our municipality and especially our bank account do not allow us to create Gites at the moment. Otherwise we would do it right away. We are indeed looking at leboncoin, but unfortunately there is little supply in the area. And there aren't really any reclamation yards in our area either. But of course we won't give up. Fortunately, the kids really enjoy it here in France, and they have been happily in their room since Christmas. And indeed it is almost a holiday, they are ready for that.
Your videos always remind me of my childhood in the French countryside. I very much enjoyed the crêpe making in your beautiful veranda. I can’t wait to see the finished bedroom 😊
Thanks, where did you lived in france in your childhood?
@@petitrevefrance I grew up in the region of Maine. My parents spent many years renovating an old farmhouse in Ste-Suzanne (53). I got to run and play inside the castle walls because in the 70s, the access to the castle was free. I was born in Le Mans. It's a beautiful medieval city with a fantastic market (the Sunday market is the biggest) at the foot of the cathedral. I think you would enjoy that market very much. They even have a brocante on Sundays. In summer, Le Mans has a nightly light show on the cathedral and old town.
O wow, thats sounds like a lovely childhood. I know le mans but never been at that area of france. We must discover so many of this land. But now you live in italy, how you become there?
@@petitrevefrance I have lived in the US since 1993. I am renovating in Sicily where I can be near the Mediterranean sea and a flight away from many european destinations, when my chidren are grown up, in a few years. Hoping to work remotely from Sicily in the future and be close to my family in France. (it's closer than crossing the Atlantic ;) ). Yes growing up in France was very pleasant. Great memories.
@@mysicilycorner ah so that's the reason. It will be a lovely house in Sicily 😄
I feel it's better to bring your things and throw away once you get there, than feeling as if you've left something behind. But then, I'm the sentimental type, so I never get rid of anything.
😄 We had throwing a lot of stuff already away in the netherlands. But it was"nt easy.
@@petitrevefrance I understand. It's so difficult to get rid of anything for me, especially if it was a gift. I still have every birthday and holiday card I've ever received.
I love your cat and dog! Also, it looks like you got some lovely boards out of your ceiling. Once you get the nails out of them they will be great for another project!
Thanks, i think that they are very pretty. I don't know yet where we gonna use. But I know one day we gonna use them.
Is that a Barbapapa in the village?
Yes it was 😄
@@petitrevefrance that’s so funny I have never seen a Barbapapa outside of the books I read as a little girl in the 80’s! I read the same books to my son 15 years ago & he loved them too. I could never find a Barbapapa toy or anything associated with them until your video.
@@susieq6452 ahh so cute then. In the Netherlands there was a tv serie with all the barbapapas when I was young.
Thank you for sharing, so nice to see all your family helping with your renovations.
Thanks, sometimes they want to help but also a lot of times they don't 😅🤣
Hello from an early Autumn morning in Sydney Australia. I really love your verandah it’s such a perfect space for meals and enjoying family time. I wish your new business every success. Amazing how you guys carry on with the renovations with all the other everyday things on top of that. Thanks for your video 🤩
Thanks for your kind words. We do what we can. And we hope also that our business is becoming a succes. 😘 Have a wonderfull sunday in Sydney
Dear Colinda you have worked so hard to make an exciting home for your family. I hope your husband is not too tired after working on his new enterprise. It doesn’t look as if it has slowed his brico down at all. I am glad you did not get the hailstorm we had last week. Everywhere was white and leaves were shredded. A real mess. Those plain doors from the 50/60s make good tabletops in the workshop or eating outside. I know you will reuse everything. Gloves??👏👏👏❤
Hi Susie, he sometimes is. Because his new enterprise is also doing renovations but then by other people at home. A hailstorm is not nice for al the farmers also.
Hi from a very grey Brittany. Again the veranda is my favourite room in your house but I have seen for the first time the "patio" with gravels, flowers table and chairs is fantastic too. Lucky you are to live in the strawberries😋😋😋😋 region. The renovation is a long journey but seeing already what you have done I am sure about the result.💯💯💯💯
Thanks Deborah, we are for sure in the strawberries region. In our Village there are a lot of strawberrie farmers. The patio is becoming more and more pretty. When we boughg the house it was only grass. 😘
Bonjour to you too. Nice to see the renovation is being sympathetically completed and the ceiling wood retained, of course it is.😊 How are the children settling in, I wonder what friends and places they have left behind. They certainly look contented. No one owns a cat, they just tolerate you if they want to. Alan ❤
In the beginning it was difficult for the children. But now they are very happy and they speak the langzame better than us.
Wat een kleine deugniet is de kat😂
Zeker weten, echt constant opletten anders eten foetsie
Yours is one of my favorite blogs, and I think it is because your family is so real. I love to see how your projects take shape at a normal pace and without pretentiousness. I think Dutch families are very hard-working people.
Thanks for your very kind words. We do our thing and for somebody it maybe seems slow but indeed for us is it the wright pace. So nice to here that you like that. 🥰
Removing the old plaster is hardwork. It’s good to take a break. Even gardening/ weeding is backbreaking work. You have a gorgeous cat and dog
Thanks 😄 for al your kind words these last days.
Nice colour on the bed. I like your little helper ❤
Yes he is cute when he wanted to help.
Nice to see the children pitching in to make a cake for the family ❤
Sometimes they wanted to help. But most of the time it's Just me 😅
I think I commented in another video I do love the Brocantes so much treasures. That’s one job I can’t handle. When we’ve done plastering it never looks right. Your husbands very quick and did a great job.
Thanks, hè did it multiple times also in our old homes in the Netherlands so it became better. But it is difficult.
this is really beautiful! i hope one day to return to france to buy a home too
Thanks, did you lived here? And so yes where in france?
@@petitrevefrance yes! i lived in Fontainebleau :) my in-laws live halfway between fontainebleau and Orleans
I know Fontainebleau and orleans ofcoursse 😀
Great progress
Thanks 🥰
Lots to see around your area. Beautiful villages. I love Brocantes over there. Yes, it’s treasure hunting. Yay! The insulation is in the plasterboards up. It looks like a room now. Well done. Love the gate too.
Yes finally it becames a room. The area is so nice here, lots of rolling hills. And we also love the brocantes.
Nice how the family is involved with the work. Your getting there with the room
Thanks, 😀
That brings back memories. It used to be myself and my five siblings job to collect the walnuts on the ground then peel them and let them dry. We had an almond tree, fig trees, one cherry tree and an orchard with all sorts of fruit. I do miss the countryside. Your garden has lots of produce ready for picking what a great harvest.
Wow that's sounds like a good place to live. Why you don't live in the countryside anymore? 5 Kids is also a lot of work, but also a lot of love and fun.
What a lovely story of your move to France. Yes, sometimes we dream of things and never follow through then have regrets. I guess during the Pandemic it really brought these subjects out in families that life is short and yes, you only live once so why not. With your decision it worked out brilliantly
I think there where a lot of people Who have changed drastically there lives after the pandemic. For us it was a good decisiuon, we fell so much more happy here.

You’ve got a lovely vegetable garden establishing. Brilliant! 👏
Last year it was great, I hope this year will become also a lot of veggies. But we have a lot of 🐌
Great video you guys are doing such a wonderful job the gardens are coming along. Yummy strawberrries and a fig tree.
Thanks, we love them too.
Love the farmhouse and the outbuildings. So much potential. Great how you’ve got fruit trees and a grapevine. Nice spots for flower gardens. The verandah with its windows is glorious. What a lovely space to have cups of coffee/tea, read a book or just to while a way the hours. You’ve done so much to enhance the farmhouse already
From april till october it's the place where we spent a lot of time. But in summer sometimes it to Hot in the veranda.
Congratulations on your new home. Already I can see the children are loving it. You’re doing a beautiful job renovating so far and the gardens are looking lovely. Love the drone shots of your property
Yes they do love it, and we also 😀
What a wonderful video. Congratulations you have a lovely house and property for your family. It’s nice to see you renovating this old farmhouse and bringing back to life 👏👏
Thanks for watching, we are very happy with our place. It needs a lot of love but it has already a lot of charm.
