How is this guy not the #1 site on youtube algorithm. This was by far the best demo and side by side comparison. I was fully buying a Fantom07 now Im getting the moDX7! Thank you!
I've had the MODX8 for three years now and it still amazes me every time I turn it on, and amazes me even more every time I watch a comparison video with the MODX vs XYZother. Yamaha really outdid themselves with this board!
I have both....Fantom 08 and MODX6(not the +). I need both. The piano sounds are better in the MODX, although I am not wild about the keyboard action. The organs are worlds better in the Fantom....not getting rid of either one.
Thankyou very VERY much for this review. I am precisely thinking to buy either Fantom 0 or Modx+. I lean for Yamaha for sound quality and for Roland for the user interface. I am still split between them 2 but this review is like a flashlight in the dark. Thanks
I was a Roland (and Korg) guy back un the 90s (JV-80, XP-80 etc.). Somewhere in the 2010s, after great instruments like the first Fantom series, they lost track and kept pushing out uninspired products while Yamaha was dominating the market with their Motif series. Korg had their moment with the Oasis and Kronos (while having issues, the Kronos was still innovative). It is only the last few years that Roland seemed to remember they also used to make great instruments. While I was convinced to buy a Kawaii ES-920 digital piano, I ended up with the Roland FP-90X. The responsiveness of the PHA50 action in combination with the modeling piano just blew me away. I'm still deeply disappointed that Roland only used one of two virtual models and, even worse, only the inferior sound stage piano samples instead of the super natural ones. But still, I love the FP-90X. It's good to see that they're also headed the right direction again with their latest Fantom workstations. More competition is always good for the consumer.
This is, personally, the best Video I've seen in a long time. Preventet my doing the mistake of selling my MODX for a Fantom 0. In this case, the MODX is clearly the better (richer) Sounding Board. Thank you a lot!!!
You are absolutly right !!! If you want some modern edm-like sounds and more gimmicks then Modix + Mpc One should be the very effective combination and not overpriced).
Sorry about making two comments, This is forbidden territory in TH-cam land. You, my man are one of the best keyboardists I have ever heard in a long while. I imagine you possibly play on a few groups. You must be in demand. I wish I were still this good.
The screen on the modx is bigger and one thing, both have sound card by USB, but, the modx have a knob Volume, really neaded if you want to control the volume of your backing tracks for example from your connect computer. For me, this details are important.
Both are great but after testing both I went with the MODX. With a little reading and some time the synth engine along with Jon Melas tools is AMAZING and the sequencer is actually quite a bit more capable but requires you spend time learning it. All in all you can’t really go wrong either way.
I like the hold while changing sounds that the Fantom has which is great for playing live. I also like the audio input on the Roland because I like to listen to and play along with Spotify tracks and can easily feed my phone audio into the keyboard. The MODX piano sounds are exceptional but I think the performance features of the Fantom give it an edge.
Looking forward to it. As a huge fan of the MODX since it first arrived, the "one" feature I really wish it has was.....more multi-sample memory. Because there are tons of great sound collections for it, many free even. If 1 gig of multi-sample memory on the MODX is limiting, imaging having just 1/4 that on the Fantom 0! Plus the MODX has 5.6 gigs of great multi-samples onboard in addition. About the only thing we're really sure about of the MODX+ is it includes a ram expansion (yeah!!). I'll likely be playing in 4 bands by the end of the year, so if these gigs make money the way I hope, I'll be buying the new MODX+ and keeping my old one as a spare and to leave at the studio for less gear to transport to practice.
Bought a Fantom 07 from you guys recently, great service and great workstation. I already have a modx7 and the 2 are a fantastic compliment in sounds. The fantom is leagues ahead in synth programmability with its great UI and the same with the sequencer. The modx sequencer is like yamaha sat down and said how backwards can we make this! Stick the Jupiter 8 expansion in the fantom 0 and you're set. Akai mpc61? Great if you want to spend half your life waiting for stuff to load. Would drive me nuts!
MODX and Montage weren't going to get sequencers, but user outcry convinced them to improvise something that probably only barely fits into the operating system. Fantom's sequencer is kind of mediocre, too, just not as bad as the Yamahas. Those Roland expansions are absurdly overpriced. Vintage Roland synth patches aren't the least bit complicated, even the cheap JD-Xi can mimic them convincingly. If you can't be assed to learn basic synthwave/retrowave sound design (super simple, quick, and easy), then you can pay Roland's ridiculous fees for presets, sure.
I've compared the sounds of the Fantom 0 (via Roland Cloud VST's which have the same sounds/engines), and in general, I much prefer the Montage/MODX sounds. Especially true for sampled instruments. The Fantom may be easier to program with it's VA engines, but the kinds of sounds available seem to be targeting synth pop, electronica, techno and rap which I don't play. I play 80s/70s rock, and the Yamaha sounds in general are much more suitable. And certainly if you need any real sampled instruments, Yamaha generally wins. The Fantom 0 has 1/4th the memory of the MODX, and the new MODX+ will about double it. Most bands need decent sampled instrument sounds in addition to synth sounds.
But what would you recommend for someone who is already used to something such as the Yamaha Reface DX and additive synthesis? The Roland still uses subtractive synthesis and offers little in the way of FM. It is also easier to have layered organ patches with twice as many oscillators on the Yamaha as on the Roland, which has a virtual tonewheel organ, but only for one channel.
@@Jason75913 Roland classic synths are one of the best that were ever made. Cheap JX-Xi can mimic them because it’s a great Roland synth which in addition to digital sound engine has real analog oscillator and real analog filter. It’s a digital- analog hybrid synth! Yamaha can’t mimic those synths, because Yamaha is softer and can’t do Roland sound. If Yamaha could mimic Roland sound from classic synths, some of the greatest bands in the world would in studio and on concerts use Yamaha synths, but Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Rammstein and many others are using Roland synths. Yamaha is great, but not for all music genres, it’s good for example to play a country music. With Fantom in addition to the best Roland classic synths and the best Roland Filters, you get Moog and Sequential Prophet 5 filters as well, which are some of the best filters in synth history. Except filters you get PCM samples of all legendary synths waveforms like Yamaha CS80, Prophet 5, Oberheim, Moog etc. etc. So if you choose Moog Saw and apply Moog filter, you will get good Moog sounds. Or if you choose Prophet 5 square and apply Prophet 5 filter, you’ll get Prophet 5 sound. Yamaha MODX can’t do it, because it has only ordinary samples, but just with samples without filter you can’t come really far to mimic sound design of those legendary synths which were used in 70s and 80s on almost all legendary albums out there. That’s why if you are nostalgic and you like 70s, 80s and 90s music or electronic music in general, Fantom is great choice. But if you like more classic guitar and piano sounds, for country, pop and similar music, MODX is good.
@wildernessmusic1068I wonder, what and how you are playing. Also the question, how much you came to know those machines ("element" - technique). I played organs, no polyphony-problems, by technical reasons. Keyboards allways have such a limit. And I also only needed halve an hour to reach that limit with the MODX. But then... No more! And I cover songs with 16 parts (sounds). So how do you reach that limit? With sounds, consisting of layering, what I claim to be nonsense. And Yamaha loves layering... Mostly to hide the cheap, bad sampling. Using arps which trigger all layers in all sounds. And then playing chords with both hands. I play realistic, complete arrangements... no problems!
As a modx8+ owner and as someone who also played a lot on roland fantom, my honest opinion Yamaha modx8+ = much better sounds (except rhodes and ep's) Roland = Much more intuitive, easy to use and more relevant tools for live And since sound quality is such an important aspect I leaned for the yamaha But please YAMAHA if you here me Im begging Just create a MODX with the workflow and interface of the roland fantom and you will have the best quality for price keyboard of all time period.
I have both boards a Fantom 08 and a Modx 7, I traded my new Nautilus 88 and a Kawai MP7 for the Fantom 08, not sure if I made the right choice.. I was expecting the Fantom to work with my iPad since it would do midi and audio over USB and thought it would work like the Modx.. I was wrong.. The Fantom doesn't work at all with the lightning connector on the iPad, where as the Yamaha works flawlessly with the iPad.. I wanted to use the Ravenscroft 275 with the Fantom and then layer to it and combine the sounds inside the machine, not happening.. Another problem is if you are running OnSong or another program Cantibile Pro to control your rig, it doesn't work with the Fantom.. Hopefully Roland will fix this so we can make use of the iPad in the future.. So if you depend on this type of a setup, go with the Yamaha....
Also have a MODX and Nautilus61 which is too heavy to take to gigs and a bit complicated. Looking at the Fantom 06. Any regrets other than the ON-song issues?
@@wireguy123 Hi.. Sorry it took me so long to respond. No regrets using the Fantom, now I am using it with a Mac Mini late 2015 model and doing a lot with it in that respect. Now I have Fantom 08 for studio and some gigs, Yamaha MODX8 on the bottom for pianos and etc., Roland Fantom 07 for the organ and etc., and MODX7 on top for saxes, string parts, horn sections, etc.. Plus I have a Roland VR-09 in the wings for an additional organ if needed.. The Roland Fantoms work great with Mac or PC as long as you use the Vendor Driver with it, otherwise you won't get audio over USB. The Yamahas don't care, just plug them in and they handle Ipad, Mac, PC etc.. I will post a video at some point showcasing my rig and how I am using it...
The only piano sounds I ever enjoyed from Roland were featured on the RD-700NX which were “Supernatural” tones. I think Yamaha is the safer choice here unless you’re a die-hard Roland fan and need a better keybed, then go with the Roland. I’m buying a MODX+6.
Admittedly I have some bias but I prefer our SN over Zencore as well. It was designed to breathe and live - and it does! Even if some feel it's not as high fidelity and vst 'like' as their preferred alternatives. Its something that grows on you overtime. Keybed like the rest is preference. Hard to believe but some pianists here actually like the cheap Yamaha beds (not me!) but it really just shows you something. Buy what you love. Don't just wander around looking to be told its ok by someone else.
I love my modx6 even I am just on the surface, I haven't found tutorials to go deeper into it. I also love its keybed it allows me to get relaxed, I haven't touched the fantom 0- yet I was about to get one in 88 keys but I need to test it first I heard the fantom-0 piano sound on youtube and IMO it sounds no as good as yamaha.
There is loads of amazing very deep Modx/Montage tutorials here on YT.. remember that the modx is basically just a montage in a budget friendly package, so have look around.. there all there
Advantages: Fantom. Better workstation features (sequencer, sampling). Better keyboard action, especially on 88 key models. Better panel layout. Dedicated organ engine and (extra cost) vintage synth model expansions. Better DAW integration (Logic and Ableton), assignable Pads. MODX. Better piano sound. Better acoustic sounds in general. Superknob is very expressive. FM engine. Disadvantages: Fantom. Pianos have no string resonance and are not that great. Limited expansion memory. No FM engine. MODX. Cheap keybed. No user sampling. Lousy sequencer. Panel could be better. No organ or synth engine expansions So Roland wins as a controller/master keyboard because of its Daw integration, Pads, and better panel and action. But many of the sounds on the MODX, especially the painos are noticably better. I'd say try them both, as each has some pluses and minuses.
Thank you. It's a shame that Roland would cut corners on this otherwise amazing machine, which might make sense for the price tag, but I guess I just can't get over the mediocre piano sounds. I don't know how good the organ engine is, but for now the MODX totally blows it out of the water with its acoustic sounds. But the bigger Fantom gets better with each software update, so let's hope this one does too.
@@abohsukampret You can always buy Piano software, you can't buy controls, better DAW integration and a lot of other things like better action. You don't judge a workstation by its piano sounds, buy a piano for that matter lol
@@shaquilleoatmeal3076 String resonance is the sound caused when other strings of the same note vibrate in harmony with a struck string. Damper resonance is the same, but stronger because the damper is down and all strings can vibrate freely.. For example, I press the damper pedal and hit Middle C. Middle C will sound, but so will (softly) C strings in all the other octaves. This gives a rich, spacious, resonant quality to the sound.
It's not a bad summary geofk777. A couple other notable points: The MODX screen is much larger. I found the Fantom 0 screen too over crowded and pressing all the buttons for the user interface confusing without reading a manual. I couldn't even figure out how to enter B3 mode at the store in the hour and a half I had to play one, because you had to press a crazy key combination just to enter B3 mode. Sound collections: The MODX has a lot more sound collections available for it. As someone that plays in cover bands, I feel this is a huge advantage for the MODX. Most of the sound collections from Roland are made by Roland, where as the MODX has tons of 3rd party ones too and can import all the tons of MOTIF series & DX-7 series sounds. Roland seems to target synth pop, techno, electronica & hip hop in their available sounds. I know this through the Roland Cloud synths which are largely identical engines & patches (and interchangeable between the software version & the Fantom 0 too) . I play in rock bands, and the sounds in the MODX generally are more fitting for what I play. The MODX does sample, and has 4 times as much memory for multisamples, but Yamaha (wisely) choose to have this done via a computer and imported with a flash drive. I sampled some of my own sounds using both SampleRobot & a wav editor. What you can't do is sample directly on the MODX. But why would I want to? While the MODX doesn't have a dedicated engine, the Montage version of Organimation (MODX is fully Montage compatible) package available is the best one I've heard for a synth that doesn't have a dedicated organ engine, and appears to sound the same on the Kronos version best I can tell and represents the best one for the Kronos even with a B3 engine. The Kronos version however does it without stealing any sample memory unlike the Montage version. Bottom line: You can make really good B3 sounds with the MODX, but neither the Fantom 0, Kronos or MODX will stack up to something like the B3-X soft synth available for computers & iPads. iPad interpretation. While the Fantom 0 may integrate better to a Windows or Mac "If" using one of the VST/Audio Units hosting packages it supports (I happen to use ones not supported by Fantom), but the MODX much better integrates with iOS (iPad's & iPhones) and doesn't purchasing an interface as the Fantom 0 does. I use a Windows PC for VST synths & my iPhone. Also, the B3-X organ is available for the iPad & iPad Mini. VB3 organ is also excellent, can run on my iPhone, likely stacks up to the Fantom B3 engine and is only $14. On my iPhone I run Moog Music's own Mini Moog software, Moog Modular, Korg Wavestation, Synclavier and many other desirable retro synth engines. For my uses, I feel the MODX + laptop full of VST's + iOS device is unbeatable. Well, for the kinds of sounds I want. And remember, I do have most of the Fantom 0's engines via VST's too. Yamaha doesn't offer VST's, so another reason to go with a MODX. Serve your Roland sound needs with their software instead. Cheaper, and far less gear to store or transport to gigs. Also note. The MODX+ is likely to be announced in September. A person in one of the MODX groups was sent one by accident early from Yamaha and did a video on it. All we know for sure is it has even more multi-sample memory. I do feel the Fantom 0 is a great synth and about an equal value, worthy competitor to the MODX. It's mainly a matter for users of what kind of sounds do they want out of it, and exactly how are they going to be using it. I don't use sequencers for example. I care only about live performance sounds.
I have both and it is difficult to compare. MODX is a synthesizer and the Fantom a workstation. The user interface of the Fantom 0 beats the MODX with a lot of points. Also you can layer 16 sounds live on the Fantom0, only eight on the MODX without using midi or a computer. Fantom 0 have more sounds. The memory is crap and the MODX have far more memory. The synthesizer expansions for the Fantom 0 makes the Fantom more than one synthesizer. So I got the SH-101, JX-8P, Jupiter-8 and Juno-106 engines. Very powerful.
@@legatusvidsin my opinion the Roland has better keys. Feels better build. The difference is hardly noticeable. Also the operation of both. Quality is fine. Buttons, sliders and knobs feel premium.
Now that there’s a Modx+ now what? Since I’m in the Roland camp would there a more of learning curve with Yamaha compared to Roland? Nice presentation- Ty. 🎧
I've never owned either of these models, but I've owned previous generations of both (MO6 and S30, and Fantom S88, JV1080, FA06). I can tell you from my experience from both manufacturers, Roland has the better user experience, especially ease of use. Roland is also better for using with your computer. In the case of the Yamaha keyboards, the sounds were amazing, but programming, navigating, and PC interface were terrible. If you learn to get around the Yamaha UI, you can't go wrong when it comes to the sounds, especially on the more realistic sounding instruments. Hope this helps.
I just ordered the Fantom 08. I was put off by that big knob / police light / flashing pacifier of the MODX 😂😂. And I love the Roland PHA-4 weighted keys.
If the super knob was the only reason you didnt buy the modx, then its a shame because you can stop it flashing, adjust the brightness of it right down to a dim light or turn it off altogether . its a great board
It's a lot better in practice, a great piece of engineering and very good live/professionally. Of course each person must pursue their own preference and it's important to love your instrument. Fantom 08 is equally impressive for what it offers and I do enjoy the 4 key bed (more so than our heavier 50 actually). In the end be mindful of role, the MoDX is great for its purpose and one of the best selling boards they've produced.
I wish the workstations had a browser (like on the akai mpc live) so that we could load samples or one shots more easily. For example samples --> an accapella or play-along that we then accompany with the internal sounds or presets or one shots --> drum samples such as kick, snare and hihat. The workstations still lack that....
Q: can’t you just use the “edit” tab to rename the patch from “Wobble HYP ” to “Split Synth” so it’s more “understandable” when you’re scrolling through?
like these 2 instruments....I have them too. fa06 more intuitive access and modx ... Sounds of yamaha👍as long time... pads on fa06 are nice as usually... modx is really more rich and modern auto drums modes ... lot of styles, fills, ending... but yamaha isnt easy too access parameters... In resume, with my point of view, excellent keyboard set if we can have the 2 models :)))) ...
Nice sounds from both. However, I've owned a Korg Triton Classic from brand new in 1999 and the sounds on it seem better than some of these ones demonstrated.
It also depend on what kind of music you make. They are both awesome, i did sold my 1st version of the MODx also the touch screen is a pain to use. At Namm Yamaha will unveil a new synth, i will wait for that :)
The local keybed on the modx can only trigger the parts on midi channels 1-8. Only an external controller can trigger channels 9-16 (as well as 1-8, when programmed to do so). That’s why there’s drop off for the parts that go beyond 8 channels. So it’s not only for a DAW be set up to trigger those parts. Another midi controller can be used as well.✌🏾
So you mean to say that for example if I take a midi controller, directly connect it to the MODX (MODX powers it on), I can play 9-16 channels on the controller? Will I be able to control parameters of those channels thru faders and knobs on the controller?
Hi - thankyou for the great review - out of interest - what keyboard stand are you using in this video - the height and tilt of the top level is excellent.
Yamaha MODX sounds light years better. It's only 8 Keyboard Controllable Parts, but maintains 194 Polyphony (256 on MODX+). Fantom-0 starts running out of Polyphony as soon as you go above 4-5 parts. 16 Parts is only a theoretical capability, and would only work if all 16 were extremely basic, low Polyphony sounds... defeating the objective. MODX gives you a lot more.
Tested both today. Yamaha sound Is Better for me. No history for piano/ strings / organ the winner Is Yamaha. Display Is Better in the Roland although Is smaller than Yamaha buy much more defined. Also for visual impact and workflow Is Better Roland. My opinions based in sounds and keybed feeling so for me the winner Is Yamaha.
At the end I bought Modx8+ and nautilus 6. Modx8+ Pro:1) Keybed of Modx8+ Is good enough for mid range keyboard, 2) beautiful sounds - piano sound Is Better than Roland 0. 3) not heavy. 4) boot time. Con: 1) some lag in the os; CPU and RAM could be improved, some transitions betweeen menù and sounds are not so fluid. Nautilus 6. Pro: 1) keybed semi weighted vey good and Better than Roland 06 and modx6+ 2) beautiful sounds 3) no lag after boot Con: 1) boot time>1' 30"
Would you please tell me, what dynamic curve on the MODX are you using? It looks to me that I can't achieve that kind of keybed response. Is it a custom made? I really like the way you play. I am so disappointed with MODX's keyboard quality, I am about to sell it. I never manage to play it so easy as you do. Alway afraid that I might break some key. I am more into piano keys and 88 notes keys keyboards, but the MODX and Fantom 07 which I bought several days ago are perfect for touring. So lightweight instruments, great for carrying around. I just wish te MODX had better keybed. Tha Fantom 07's keyboard is not the best one, but it plays very fine. Comparing to my Jupiter 80, Fantom's keybed is a bit cheaper, but I can live with it. So please tell me what key velocity you use on the MODX. Thanks in advance!
The sampling memory of Roland Fantom O is just 256 mb and out of the box only 100 mb is available for sampling I think Roland still live in the era of 90s.....whereas on modx is 1GB the acoustic guitars of all Roland keyboards from A to Z sucks not even deserve to be called guitars ......so this much memory you can't import samples and create your own sounds even you can't import all the expansions you will have to remove some expansions before installing new ones......common Roland it's definitely hell no from my side......
Yes, agreed. Roland continue to put crazy limitations on user memory - why? I went with the MODX-7 (and a Korg Wavestate - also awesome) after being a long term Roland fan with the previous generation Fantom X6 and V-Synth.
In other words - if you wanna get it right - you need BOTH of those 😆😆 So - CAN these two be clocked / synchronized TOGETHER ?? - if yes - how ?? I have a TOTAL 0 idea .....
I think the yamaha is the best choice here. Especially for the price. If you want a good synth they have the yamaha reface that alot of people love. And if money isn't an issue, I'd go with the udo 60
As an amateur keyboardist I am coming to the conclusion that it was not in my head that Yamaha sounds better than Roland. I had a 1996 Yamaha CS1x and traded for a Fantom 06. I immediately noticed a difference in sound quality (and we are talking about a 20+ old synth!) It's obvious at this point especially when you look at Yamaha history. Roland never made real pianos!
It's great that the MODX6 has space for an iPad Mini, iPhone or other tablet. No separate stand required. Also handy if you wanted to sit comfortably on the couch with the MODX6 on your lap. Also has a build in class complaint audio interface which the Fantom 0 does not have for those that want to use iOS without spending money and needing to get an external interface. I'm glad there is some space on the right side. I'm not a fan of many of the extra buttons to navigate on the Fantom 0. Just make a quality larger touch screen like the MODX has and do more things with way. Much prefer navigation with the MODX.
@@michaelgreen2283 I think the point is Yamaha is being stingy with controls. You need to buy their Flagship to get 8 faders for example. I read you cant even map the MODX's faders. I guess it depends on your needs. Better DAW workhorse or stand alone system. The other thing people are making a big deal about is the Piano sounds, you can always buy award winning software
6:57 but the programs are used in a daw - multitimbral.... thats were you exactly want that single own sound to mix and master 😂😂😂 combis and programs are nit bad - korg also use that
@@Jason75913 The thing is that SuperNatural pianos on the FA08 and RD2000 do have string resonance and sound much better than the identical patch names on the Fantom. Roland had significantly worsened it's SuperNatural pianos from the previous versions. And the Zen Core pianos don't have string resonance either and don't sound great. Overall, acoustic piano sounds are one of the biggest weak points of the Fantom-0, despite the excellent action. Of course, you can always use KeyScape, PianoTeq or some other VST instead of the internal piano sounds. They'd be fine on stage.
@@geoffk777 SuperNatural pianos don't have string resonance, never did. I am familiar with the FA and RD-2000. Yes, Fantom-0 pianos suck next to MODX, Nautilus, Krome EX, and even the new MPC Keys. Roland sticks to much smaller sample ROMs in their keyboards versus the latest competition right now. On the bright side, all are overkill on stage, even the Fantom-0, so it is nothing to worry about at all there, but it is a bummer nevertheless. FA and the cheaper Juno-DS can load the free EXP-04 Axial Expansion, whose "PremierGrand" preset is an upgrade over SuperNatural pianos, so Fantom-0 is weak even against older Roland keyboards. Still, Fantom-0 is the most practical on stage versus the competition, which is where it matters, in my opinion. Its synth lead/bass/pad sound capabilities and variety beat the competition, too, for anyone interested.
@@Jason75913 Well, you're just plain wrong. Download the FA-08 manual from Roland and you'll see that string resonance is an adjustable parameter. But it's not on the Fantoms, because they dropped that feature. I agree that the Fantom-0 is an excellent choice for many keyboardists. But I'm not making any excuses for Roland, and they really shouldn't have dropped this feature on a premium workstation. It's not on the big Fantoms either, except for the V-Panos.
tech Talk have 3 streamed videos on just Arps nearly 3 hours in total! when i tripped over these I was aghast at what the Yamaha can do and the Fantom cannot. included the mega voices the fact that you can run 8 arps at same time make your own there's videos out there on creating arranger tracks with the Montage also. the Fantom has only 128 arp patterns you cant make your own or modify existing ones Yamaha you can make and modify and they have mega arps for strumming and smart arps. 10K in total! Someone should do a video on this aspect here's a link to the first tech Talk video of 3 th-cam.com/video/t3lG2tev0hY/w-d-xo.html
I admire your mindset! 10.000 ... in words: ten thousand. Is that, what you are praising here? Big numbers? Know what!? I browsed ALL of them. "Browsing" isn't even possible, because it depends on other MANY (!!!!!!) adjustment in different edges of this overloaded, unintuitive software_patchwork, if you can hear them or not. Sound, number of elements, Mega-Voice, "sort"/"direct" (controller arps)... Did you ever do this? Do you heard them all? Do you recognise, which arp needs which adjustment so to hear it? When you are arranging, do you search in those 10.000 arpeggios? How do you do this? By Cathegories? Do the Yamaha-Cathegories tell you, what you will find where? I can't even imagine how arpeggios could be cathegorised at all. By instruments? You know the rules? Then you are blessed with an excellent knowledge/intuition! How many time do you spend in searching? Do you also had crashes when browsing? My personal record is within 5 minutes; by toggling between 5 favorites in order to find the best one for my song. I'm coming from eOrgan (40 years ago) with essential rhythm patterns, accessible via many knobs for known patterns; "walz", "rumba", "foxtrott", "march" ... and all those well known cathegories, developed in hundreds of years. Keyboards have those cathegories too. How do you search for rhythm patterns in the MODX? Searching for "march"? Attention! Some names are such crazy, that you will NEVER EVER recognize what rhythm it is. At least I am not able to. I admire your mindset. I am too simple-minded to notice an advantage of those large numbers😉 For me 10k is the same as Zero. 128 would be a number I could handle much better. Find exactly the arpeggio I need? Not in 0, not in 128 and not in 10k! I create my personal drumset, because in every standard something I need is missing. This causes enourmous latancies to pay attention, when sequencing (onboard). But it is like it is. Then I sequence my arpeggios (drums/sound). Then I convert them to arps. And there are two reasons to do so: 1. I don't find the arpeggios of my songs in those 10k. 2. I need much less time to do this, even with the help of a DAW (make, export, convert) than you do with searching in 10k. The bed stands😁
It is really hard... I lika the Layout of the Roland. More Triggers, Knobs and Pads. You can "Fell" what you do. But the "inside" is old.. the Natural Sounds are horrible old and not "up to date".. But (i think) a easy way to create Songs with the Sequenzer... The Modx (or ModX+ now) sounds much better, has an interesting inside with tons of Arpggiator, and Wavetables, DX Sounds and much more. But the Menu is very ugly and the Sequenzer not really easy to understand (I think). And the Overlay is much Boring. Just 4 Knobs and Faders, a "Superfader" (that seems a little bit like a slider) and some Buttons. Seems, that you most of the time tab on that display, just I play on my Handy or tablet-PC. That is not very cool.. I can't decide what I like better and what is more important to me. A lot to “touch” or a sound that will still delight in three years. What is your really Favorit Instrument, if you go to "an lonely Island" and just can take only on of them with you? :)
Couldn't you get external synths like desktop synths to help with the lack of knobs? I'm genuinely asking, I have no idea. But for like 2,500$ less, the modx is the choice for me.
@@caleb5780 The thing is: I have everything I need on my PC. But I would like to have a “closed system” for experimentation and band rehearsals. The ModX is too much like a PC for me, where most things are done via the touchscreen. The Fantom has even more to touch. But Roland's sound is really very thin and ultimately that's exactly what you love about a synthesizer. The Fantom-0 probably also has the better sequencer. It's all very difficult.
@@andreassonnenschein1250 I feel your pain 🙃 the hydrasynth doesn't have much menu diving. Or, people like the novation summit (used for 1500) for a cheaper one, the cobalt 8x 61 is so good for the price that the company almost went bankrupt 😅 they upped the price now, but the used market is still relatively low (650)
Fantom 0 lacks enough memory so will run out of space fast. Roland pianos sound too metallic, overcompressed and empty of harmonics. I had a 2003 Roland Fantom which had similar "empty" piano sounds that's why I sold it. Roland has always good build quality but the pianos really suck. I have 2 yamahas right now and thinking about getting a modx+8...Roland has better interface though..Thanks for the great comparison.
A comparison between a shitty annoying interface + non reacting touch screen + cheap keybed vs logical interface + good touch screen + very good synth keybed. I had the first one. I sold it and now, I have the second one. Guess....
Akai mpc 61 did something that these two didn't. Innovation and musician friendly system that's what we all need now. Not difficult Menus and sub menus when playing lively and of course the Daw technology on your fingers right away.
there are a lot of menus in the Fantom simply because it is 10 times the box that mpc61 is.. they are not really comparable instruments...if your focus is sampling to create sounds then the MPC is still king.. but for rapidly laying down tracks of all kinds of instruments.. Fantom or another more traditional synth workstation is the answer.
Akai's never put out a major keyboard to compete with Yamaha, Korg or Roland. So if the MPC actually sells, that would be new territory for Akai. Their S1000 rack did sell pretty well to studios however. I'm pretty sure Akai is now located about a half hour from me. I'm going to have to take a ride and see if they have a show room demoing it. Doesn't really sound all that interesting to me as a VST user, as i think the VST's will be a lot better. But we'll see.
MODX keys blow, Fantom-06 keys are the same as on the older FA-06, if you've ever tried that one. Juno-DS61 keys feel almost identical to the FA-06. Premium would be FA-08, in my opinion, whose keybed Fantom-08 hopefully shares.
@@Jason75913 The Fantom-08 has Roland-s PHA-4 action, which was their best several years ago. It's a bit lighter and more mechanical feeling, but still excellent. The big Fantom-8 had Roland's top of the line PHA-50 action, which is the same one used on the RD-2000 (and their expensive home digital pianos). This is terrific, although some find it too heavy.
@@abohsukampret I tried both. I didn't like the feel of the Fantom 06 keybed any better than the MODX6 keybed. Then again, I'm not a big fan of the feel of the Roland keybed even on the premium classic Roland keyboard in my collection. It's fine and all, but I"m just not a huge fan of it. Nor is it really a problem for me either.
@@mirosg197 Not only the edm like stuff. I think that the Strings and Pianos are richer too.
I am returning my Fantom 0 and getting a MODx!
@@TheCaioKyleBraga why? Please not because what I wrote 1 year ago...
I remember coming here to learn about the Fantom 07.
Thanks to Keith for helping me out!
Sorry about making two comments, This is forbidden territory in TH-cam land. You, my man are one of the best keyboardists I have ever heard in a long while. I imagine you possibly play on a few groups. You must be in demand. I wish I were still this good.
I just ordered the modx+7 as a guitar player I can’t wait to learn a new medium
One of the best modx and fantom-0 videos i've seen! Thank you for the great review!
Both keyboards sound amazing in these expert hands.
Thank you
MODX the one to go. Yamaha more specific options that can not be symphonied together. MODX very fascinating regarding sound - wow
Wish I could put Yamaha's pianos and guitars into my Roland Fantom. It would be the perfect machine.
The screen on the modx is bigger and one thing, both have sound card by USB, but, the modx have a knob Volume, really neaded if you want to control the volume of your backing tracks for example from your connect computer. For me, this details are important.
What do you mean by that ? Can you tell me how to connect my computer via USB sound card?
Both are great but after testing both I went with the MODX. With a little reading and some time the synth engine along with Jon Melas tools is AMAZING and the sequencer is actually quite a bit more capable but requires you spend time learning it. All in all you can’t really go wrong either way.
Jon Melas is still available? I can't see it anymore
MODX+ is confirmed. Expect launch early September.
@@Jason75913
Roland classic synths are one of the best that were ever made.
Love my Modx! Only wish that I had two so I did not have to bring it back and foe from church. We do have both if these boards on stage though.
Yamaha sounds in the Roland operating system please
You just said the perfect wish! hahahahhaha
You said it all
Great comparison. Thank you for taking the time on this :)
As a modx8+ owner and as someone who also played a lot on roland fantom, my honest opinion
Yamaha modx8+ = much better sounds (except rhodes and ep's)
Roland = Much more intuitive, easy to use and more relevant tools for live
And since sound quality is such an important aspect I leaned for the yamaha
But please YAMAHA if you here me Im begging Just create a MODX with the workflow and interface of the roland fantom
and you will have the best quality for price keyboard of all time period.
thanks for the video. I just ordered the MODX6+ yesterday. Can't wait for it to arrive.
I have the MODX 7 and I just bought the Roland FA06 for my top keys…so Im gonna literally have this same rig inverted 😂
There is loads of amazing very deep Modx/Montage tutorials here on YT.. remember that the modx is basically just a montage in a budget friendly package, so have look around.. there all there
Advantages:
Fantom. Better workstation features (sequencer, sampling). Better keyboard action, especially on 88 key models. Better panel layout. Dedicated organ engine and (extra cost) vintage synth model expansions. Better DAW integration (Logic and Ableton), assignable Pads.
MODX. Better piano sound. Better acoustic sounds in general. Superknob is very expressive. FM engine.
Disadvantages:
Fantom. Pianos have no string resonance and are not that great. Limited expansion memory. No FM engine.
MODX. Cheap keybed. No user sampling. Lousy sequencer. Panel could be better. No organ or synth engine expansions
So Roland wins as a controller/master keyboard because of its Daw integration, Pads, and better panel and action.
What do you mean string resonance?
@@shaquilleoatmeal3076 String resonance is the sound caused when other strings of the same note vibrate in harmony with a struck string. Damper resonance is the same, but stronger because the damper is down and all strings can vibrate freely.. For example, I press the damper pedal and hit Middle C. Middle C will sound, but so will (softly) C strings in all the other octaves. This gives a rich, spacious, resonant quality to the sound.
It's not a bad summary geofk777.
A couple other notable points:
The MODX screen is much larger.
Assuming both of your boards have synth action keys, which do you like better? Which has better quality? thanks
@@legatusvidsin my opinion the Roland has better keys. Feels better build. The difference is hardly noticeable. Also the operation of both. Quality is fine. Buttons, sliders and knobs feel premium.
They both sound great.
Hope this helps.
much more of a learning curve on the MODX
Roland piano sound kinda bright. Modx is a better board
Update: I have them both. And a krome ex
Yamaha still sounds better to me.
What do you mean by still?
lol like after the comparison lol still is the word. Just wanted to be the smart ass lol
Hmm, Sure?
@KingzofSwing But fantom 0 doesn't have enough memory unfortunately..
Both are equall kid because you don't know about it But may be better then Korg
Nice take on the Layla outro in the beginning
great, practical comparision. no fluff.
Nice sounds from both. However, I've owned a Korg Triton Classic from brand new in 1999 and the sounds on it seem better than some of these ones demonstrated.
MODX is the King ❤
I like modx much better! Probably i will purchase , thanks for video, very very helpful
Very informative. Thank you folks.
A very very good review. Thank you.
Nice playing regardless of the instruments man. If I could do Layla like that on any piano sound, I'd just sleep so much easier
Can I integrate Roland Fantom 06 with Cubase?
What is name of the song you're playing at the very beginning
I know this but no idea where it comes from 😉
how long does it take to power up? and which one is faster??
Hi - thankyou for the great review - out of interest - what keyboard stand are you using in this video - the height and tilt of the top level is excellent.
Yamaha had a more realistic sound. I have the modx 8
Great video, very informative.
I Prefere the sounds of yamaha..................
I own the Fantom and the MODX and the MODX sounds muts better.
Fantom for synths and leads…Mod X for everything else 😂…getting both would make the perfect combination
It'd be cheaper getting the modx and a 500$ synth or something
Programming the MODX "Sequencer" is as difficult as programming Assembler on the PC.......or in other words: It's like pain in the ass.
Was that first song from Smashing Pumpkins?
Great sounds!
The modx has a better key bed?
Roland fantom ❤❤❤
Smashing pumpkins! Nice!
How do the key beds compare?
2 them. Professional.
I went with the MODX-7 (and a Korg Wavestate - also awesome) after being a long term Roland fan with the previous generation Fantom X6 and V-Synth.
how do you record the piano sound?
All sounds recorded are done using the line out on each instrument direct to the recorder with no adjustment so everything is as from the factory
Yamaha modx6 plus & Roland fantom 06 which one is best?
Please tell me!
Mox x 8. no key bed problem, and that was the main thing people hate.
The 4th chord to Layla is an Ab13 not a Bb
Where can I buy used korg pa700 with a suitable price please?
Tanto faz. Os dois são bons.
In other words - if you wanna get it right - you need BOTH of those 😆😆
So - CAN these two be clocked / synchronized TOGETHER ?? - if yes - how ?? I have a TOTAL 0 idea .....
ModX Plus has double the memory which handles the voice stealing problem.
For someone playing keyboards all their life, you should know the correct chords for the outro of Layla lol.
I think the yamaha is the best choice here. Especially for the price. If you want a good synth they have the yamaha reface that alot of people love. And if money isn't an issue, I'd go with the udo 60
@@caleb5780 Thank you for the return. 👍
Roland never made real pianos!
wow Roland sounds like Keyboards 20 years ago whereas Yamaha sounds like Multi Gigabyte Plugins
Nice demo. However when emulating guitar sounds, avoid playing them like a piano 👍
Thats my thought exactly!!
Yamaha acoustic sounds better but i love roland forever 🤣🤣🤣
Fantomは力強く主張した音色に聞こえます。私は好きな音です!
I own a Fantom 6 synth - for $ 3500 dollars it better sound like a MODX
Roland better !
I think the Roland sounds better. seems fuller and bigger sounding.
It’s annoying that Yamaha had to put the sticker, just to fill the empty spot on the board.
It's easily removed...just a thought
@@michaelgreen2283 funny they waste money on those stickers, and they like to pinch pennies when possible
@@classicarcadeamusementpark4242 The Fantom is an Audio Interface, am I missing something?
6:57 but the programs are used in a daw - multitimbral.... thats were you exactly want that single own sound to mix and master 😂😂😂
combis and programs are nit bad - korg also use that
Yamaha rocks
I heard the SuperNATURAL piano sounds on the Fantom dont have string resonance, is this true?
Yes, unfortunately. Only the V-Pianos on the big Fantom.
SuperNatural is nothing to write home about, and no string resonance.
Someone should do a video on this aspect here's a link to the first tech Talk video of 3

And there are two reasons to do so:
1. I don't find the arpeggios of my songs in those 10k.
2. I need much less time to do this, even with the help of a DAW (make, export, convert) than you do with searching in 10k.
The bed stands😁
So 4k or 1k (new) i think I'd rather save the 3k
On a lonely island I would be playing to myself. I would choose sound over features. That means I would take the MODx
@@TheCaioKyleBraga yes, I think youre right... It is faboulous, when the Sound inspire your work...
Guess....
And you don’t regret the sounds from the ModX ?
Shitty interface, Yamaha then. But it does sound better. When folks listen to your music they don't care about your interface problems.
roland here, deeper natural sound, the modx sounds almost coloured and a little too wide/bright
interface is better on modx tho
Yamaha Win
Gosto demais do Roland
Mas o yamaha soa mais natural
Dura lo que el amor más o menos.
Which keybed feels more premium? Or do they both feel cheap and toy-like to the touch?
I heard the Fantom 0 has better keybed, the MODX feels toylike in comparison.
@@abohsukampret That's true, al least for the 88 key models.
Guitars sounds bad on both keyboards, but modx much better. Roland guitars are so bad....
