Absolutely brilliant hacks!! I LOVE it!! I also like the 70's look of the wood frame. I would have personally done this either in carbon fiber or aluminum so I really appreciate the look you pulled off. My only thought for the future would be to replace the pot on the preamp with a switching one so you can both adjust the level AND turn on the unit with one knob. Then you're left with a single 48v switch on the side. I've loved all your videos so far so more of this or more of your older stuff is great for me!!
This is an awesome set up and I would def love to see more of the work surrounding the make of the top handle. Especially just a little bit more insight into how you went about removing the pop up flash.
Wow. That is so awesome. Wish I had your electronics and woodworking knowledge. Love the way that came out. Having a gain knob at the top is such a great idea so you can fine tune the input volume. Once it's got that cold shoe, that is going to be a beast of a package.
Thanks Michael! All the input from you and others has been great while building this. Still would do many things differently! Would love to make small batches of something similar.
Your DIY skills amaze me. This is super cool. The only things I would suggest, perhaps for a version 2 , is could you route the wires through the top handle so they are not exposed. So basically the ends of the wires come out of the bottom of the top handler. Finally, it would be nice if the battery cradles and batteries are indented into the bottom piece so they don't stick out, but instead flat and aligned.
Beautiful work Caleb. Really looking forward to GH4 vs A6300. I've gotten to use both as rentals but that's no substitute for holding them both in your hands.
Thanks a lot! I am actually going through a re-branding right now and am looking to start that TH-cam thing again soon with lots of filmmaking & VFX content :)
Funny thing: just by coincidence I've been watching a tons of videos about woodworking, and now you turn up with a wooden handle! I would definitely watch your process if you filmed it! On another note, the little glass in front on my EVF got scratched (I don't even know how it's possible) and it could use a replacement. Nudge nudge! ;)
Nice work! You dont need to use the double battery setup. Just go to Banggood and type in: Isolated Power Module. With this Module you could use your Batteries in parallel for long lasting shots! Would definitely be more handy! I would love to see more Camera Hacks!
I think you just invented a new hobby: Camera tuning. All it needs now is a spoiler and some neon lights :-) Seriously though that is a very nice hack. Love the walnut finish, it gives it a luxury look and feel.
The EVF is actually better resolution than the flip out lcd, so wouldn't want to break that and besides that the body is weatherproof, so wouldn't want the mess with that. The wood work is very cool though would love to do something like this but without modifying the camera.
Really awesome, I've just finished making a 15mm shoulder rig out of welding steel pipe to allow for extremely heavy and long lenses, external batteries, screens, a top handle welded to the base etc, (anyone wanting to know what pipe to use its plumbing crimp pipe which has a 15mm OD and is weldable) Only criticism is that you could have soldered a 3.5m jack next to XLR out on the top handle, just piggy back off the XLR connections and route to another jack, just saves having an adapter there.
Nice man, love seeing people mod things. Like someone said below an extra 3.5 input would be sweet and I also think a seperate battery integrated into the handle just for the irigpre would be a great idea, then you could use the monitor as well. If you're thinking about making another version it would be cool to try and integrate the irig into the baseplate so it could be a unit you could swap between cameras.
After I watched this I saw you did actually make something similar over on your Vimeo channel. But yeah it would be pretty cool to combine all these things somehow into a sleek unit :D . Keep on Modding!
Brilliant.. But don't you think that another Hot Shoe mount on top of that Top Handle would be better? So you could put a Speedlite, Videomic Pro or Monitor? Btw super cool and awesome video. Never would've thought myself.. haha...Thanks
I'm working on designing something similar (but smaller) for my a6300, I have a prototype 3d printed, just need to work on the XLR part (and afford a microphone to make use of it).
nice mod, but I would have had added 2x 15mm rod insertion points with tighteners inbetween the power supply & camera for follow focus and matte box mounting.
Insane job Caleb! I would have never found the courage to actually put my hands into the camera, and the results are amazing! As a kinda unrelated question, what wide angle lenses do you recommend for the GH4? From my understanding there's not much of a choice for wide-angle lenses when it comes to vintage
Current, wide angle lenses are tough on that camera if you aren't going to go with native MFT lenses. If you're adapting, check out the wide Rokinon lenses.
I thought about doing that, but you have to get it juuuuust right or it it'll be very uncomfortable. My handle feels great, and I know it'll work well with other shooters too!
I wish i had your skills! I have no knowledge in diy projects like this... but protected by my ignorance... IF i knew how to solder things like this, i would try to replace the controler chip of a Canon camera (maybe this new EOSM) to get a faster write speed in my cards just to get a powerful RAW camera. Hi, I was wondering if you had any of your sketches/diagrams that you could put up to show how you changed the potentiometer for a different one. Thats the only thing I'm struggling with. Great work as always :D
I used a B50K pot as linked to in the description. If you have a bread board, you can play with the pin layout. I wrote a diagram down, but not sure if it is the one I went with. If you shoot me an email from my website I'll send you a photo of my notes.
I love the top handle! I've been trying to think of a way to build the iRig into a unit for years. I know that you said you weren't going to post a detailed breakdown of the iRig hack, but it would be immensly helpful if you could just post a diagram (however rough). Also, any chance you could provide some approximate dimensions of the handle? Again this is an awesome build, you've created the thing I've been after for so many years, thanks!
Mod looks awesome! Few questions: Top handle with wide angle lenses - does the peak of the handle show in the frame when you are using wider lenses? btw what is your widest focal length you use on your GH4? If the peak of the handle is showing and since you ain't using the EVF what if the handle is mounted backwards - are the cables running zigzag over the screen? Few pointers: The mods look a bit bulky in height - it might be a user experience thing like pulling focus better because of the extra space around the lens but since you didn't mention it I'm guessing here. I would've made the mods more flush with the components attached to them like the base plates height on the same height as the battery holders on it. This also might be a durability issue or assembly thing (holes of the base plates and battery holders overlap) that didn't got mentioned. Top handle sure has a large opening for the hand to grab on (seen at 2:34) making this gap a bit smaller could've made the handle's height lower (this also brings the peak down and sadly more visible to wider lenses as mentioned above but...) and the peak - did you consider the idea of placing the audio components vertically instead of horizontally (or even in a slight tilt)? This would've made the peak less pointy and less visible for wide angle lenses and also takes up less space in length. I really like what you did inside the camera - the Arca-Swiss mount instead of the pop-up flash is brilliant for video-only-shooters and the relocation of the audio jack is something that the camera manufacturers should've realized ages ago. I'd like to make these kinds of mods to my camera (Canon 60D) as well but I don't have the guts to open up and tear down my equipment at the moment - when I get new camera body I might reconsider tinkering with it :)
That looks awesome! It's been great walking with you as your skills expand these past 3 or 4 years. I do have a question. I remember the days when XLR preamp quality was pushed so hard- product lines like the JuicedLink. I'm seeing more and more adapters, cheaper preamps, and unshielded cables (non-XLR) How is that changing?
Thanks Logan! Glad to have you aboard for the ride! Do you mean why am I using unshielded cables or why does that seem to be a theme in the industry/new gear? I wonder if manufacturers are seeing people like us using shorter runs for video production rather than huge sets/events where shielded, balanced connections are a must. For most small production scenarios, unshielded, unbalanced gear is fine. Unless you have a huge set with lots of gear, long runs and tons of signals you should be fine with unshielded/unbalanced gear.
Great stuff Caleb, really cool and inspirational. I'm currently in the process of finishing up writing about a DIY V-mount system you might be interested in as well for those shoots where you need much more than two LP-E6s for power :)
Nice work Tobi! And no sweat on the rant. I get it! Unfortunately most people aren't inclined to DIY it, so sharing alternatives is necessary. But yeah, pretty expensive when you think about the basic components.
Wow very very impressive. I think you need to take it to panasonic headquarters so they can have some inspiration for a future GH or AF102 camera. On another note, would you consider selling it?
Thanks Konjo! I just hope they move the headphone jack! Not going to sell this one at least for a while. But I'm considering manufacturing in small batches. We'll see!
Like the top handle yet not quite sure i am a fan of the bottom part, it seems like it would be better to just have the other battery on the handle. Other than that this is a pretty awesome mod.
this looks great Caleb. I might look at doing some simplified hacking of the iRig, like locking XLR and better pot' knob. I want to know why you didn't put the outputs from the top hand on the other side so the leads didn't have to come across your lens from the far side?
Thanks Chris! I thought the way I did it would allow me to keep the cables under control since there wouldn't be a big cable loop blocking my focusing hand. I also find most of the time I operate from behind the camera and to the left side, so having the inputs there made sense for me.
Ok that makes sense and is the good thing about personalised mods like this. You do what's best for you. Just got a GH4 for work so irig is now a real consideration
Have you seen these saramonic preamps? They make a similar but better preamp: th-cam.com/video/U5nOkyiu3qQ/w-d-xo.html and if you have $99 I would check this one out: th-cam.com/video/eRLwxllAIwQ/w-d-xo.html
I never dare to touch anything in my gh4. I admire your bravery and creativity. Awesome woodwork shop.
This is easily the most elegant camera rig on the whole internet. The wood is gorgeous. Amazing job man
Wow, high praise! Thank you sir!
now this is some hardcore camera porn
Absolutely brilliant hacks!! I LOVE it!! I also like the 70's look of the wood frame. I would have personally done this either in carbon fiber or aluminum so I really appreciate the look you pulled off.
My only thought for the future would be to replace the pot on the preamp with a switching one so you can both adjust the level AND turn on the unit with one knob. Then you're left with a single 48v switch on the side.
I've loved all your videos so far so more of this or more of your older stuff is great for me!!
Appreciate you sharing your hard work. The build came out beautiful!
Thanks Dylan!
Caleb!!! Dude!!! You are the man!!! Dogg!! You're a BEAST!!! The average person can't do this. You're a genius doc!! Realtalk
Haha! Thanks Mychal!
I thought porn wasn't allowed on TH-cam!?!?!
I was thinking the same thing, wonder if he would make one to sell to me?
Austin The Parkour Shooter Love your videos man!!
haha I wish I was half as talented/ambitious as you are. I like that you didn't hold any punches, and really made it your own.
Can't wait to see what you can do with the Axiom camera once it gets released!
The form looks like a canon c100. A surprisingly great ergonomic design
Wow man. This is impressive! Not only is it functional but it looks great!
Keep up the great work, and thanks for posting this.
Thanks Jakub!
Beautiful! If you start a service where people send you their GH4 and you deck it out, I'll be the first to buy!
Thanks! I actually considered all of that, but doing so would be been very difficult and time consuming. Maybe in the future though!
+DSLR Video Shooter Of course. Still super cool what you have managed to do.
I think you are proud with what you did and deserve to be, well done
Thank you Kamal!
Dude I'm afraid to even clean the sensor...
Haha! The key is to have a tall stiff drink before diving in ;-)
It's beautiful!
I'd love to see more videos like this.
As well as your take on the GH4 vs a6300.
Thanks!
Wow. Since long time i did not saw something amazed me like this.
Well done man. amazing.
The moment we've all been waiting for!!!
Beautiful work Caleb. Really looking forward to GH4 vs A6300. I've gotten to use both as rentals but that's no substitute for holding them both in your hands.
Hopefully I can help!
Really impressed with the final outcome! Can´t wait to see what you will come up with in the future :D
Thanks Another Film! Nice work on your channel!
Thanks a lot! I am actually going through a re-branding right now and am looking to start that TH-cam thing again soon with lots of filmmaking & VFX content :)

On another note, the little glass in front on my EVF got scratched (I don't even know how it's possible) and it could use a replacement. Nudge nudge! ;)
Ha! If I was willing to open up my camera again I'd ship you mine ;-) Gotta love woodworking!
Wow Wow Wow. That is awesome work. Beautiful and functional.
Nice work! You dont need to use the double battery setup. Just go to Banggood and type in: Isolated Power Module. With this Module you could use your Batteries in parallel for long lasting shots! Would definitely be more handy! I would love to see more Camera Hacks!
Good to know! Thank you!!!
ho-lee shit, you opened up the camera?!111 >_< Love the wood
Yep! Got crazy enough!
That is such a super cool build! Genius.
I think you just invented a new hobby: Camera tuning. All it needs now is a spoiler and some neon lights :-) Seriously though that is a very nice hack. Love the walnut finish, it gives it a luxury look and feel.
Thanks Pascal! You just gave me an idea to add a giant subwoofer to the handle ;-)
Wow! Crafty!
I'm sure you could work the two batteries into the base somehow -- like a vertical grip.
Finally, Caleb!! Looking really awesome!!
Thanks Diogo!
Seriously cool. Makes me feel better about modding my Olympus lens hood.
Very cool build. This makes me want to build a crazy camera project. now I just need to find some free time.
Do it! And send pics!
This is incredible!! Badass modification
bad azz vid! can you get more into on how to do the external powering?
Good job Caleb! And it looks pretty slick too!!!
Love these mods. I wish you could do more videos like this nowadays :/
The EVF is actually better resolution than the flip out lcd, so wouldn't want to break that and besides that the body is weatherproof, so wouldn't want the mess with that. The wood work is very cool though would love to do something like this but without modifying the camera.

Thanks Ian! Yep, that would have been a better use of space. Was kicking myself for not thinking of that.
Its okay with any project I do the same, only when its finished do you then look back and think of something else to add haha
Looks like a Kickstarter intro :) Very nice indeed.
Thank you David! If someone buys me a CNC I'd make more!
LOL. I'll make some phone calls.
+DSLR Video Shooter what's a CNC?
That was awesomely built!!!
Dude stand up job my friend. Bravo
seriously impressive Caleb!
Thanks Alexander! I have though about making a YAGH like unit that would be non-camera specific.
Yeah! And then take it to Kickstarter plz! :D
After I watched this I saw you did actually make something similar over on your Vimeo channel. But yeah it would be pretty cool to combine all these things somehow into a sleek unit :D . Keep on Modding!
I've been waiting for this. Rock on!
Took me long enough right?
I'm pumped to see it up against the A6300!
Brilliant..
But don't you think that another Hot Shoe mount on top of that Top Handle would be better? So you could put a Speedlite, Videomic Pro or Monitor?
Btw super cool and awesome video. Never would've thought myself.. haha...Thanks
didnt you watch to the end?
+taxiheli Only for the speedlite, and in this case, the gear is for video, so the speedlite isn't functional.
Like I said in the video, the cold shoe is coming. Just ran out of time!
Pretty awesome work! Marvelous staying power.
You sir, are a goddamn genius and that is a beautiful work of art. Plus it's useful. Bonus.
Why thank you sir!
amazing setup bro!!!
i will waiting the gh4 vs a6300 video
What is this sorcery?! So sad I only stumbled upon this now, but wow major respect

Current, wide angle lenses are tough on that camera if you aren't going to go with native MFT lenses. If you're adapting, check out the wide Rokinon lenses.
Damn, you're a genius man! :o
Even DSLR Video Shooter do film with mirrorless!
I subscribed the other day, I find your videos really interesting and nice to watch, keep it up! cheers
Thanks Martino! Glad to have you aboard!
Not gonna lie, I would pay some good money to have my GH4 modded like this.
I was waiting for cade to appear, then I realised these are two separate channels!
You should add 2 cold shoes, one on the back of the handle for the monitor, and one near the middle/front for the mic. Then call it done :)
this is awesome, makes me wish I was into cameras...
Yasss, 18 minutes of camera goodness :)
I have the G7 So im SO building something like this! Awesome video
Do it! And send me a video/photo! Not much of this online...
ya nothing like this online really and will do
Wow thats is so cool, awesome hack caleb!
Awesome project Caleb. Nice work!
Tanks Bryan!
Nice work Caleb!
Kickstarter right away!! Nice work!
Holy crap, awesome.
Wow !!!! Fantastic! you should go crowdfunding with a formal version of it ;) Excellent !!!
Thanks Eduardo!
It looks amazing! Nice work.
Thanks Nate!
You should put a mounting point on the handle.
Haha, should've waited until the end of the video.
You should make a power grip like that for the Blackmagic Pocket 6k.....amazing though
nice wood stylish!
but I would make the handle repeats the shape of the grip fingers. something like «ibanez jem»
I thought about doing that, but you have to get it juuuuust right or it it'll be very uncomfortable. My handle feels great, and I know it'll work well with other shooters too!
wow great work! looks beautiful too!
(mirrorless, good AF WITH touch screen, Canon Colors, 14 bit...).
But been realistic... This gh4 mod or a modded NX1 like this would fulfill all my needs.
You're a mad genius! I love it!
I love how you threw away
the Lame Built In Flash.
*Love your mod* ♥♥♥♥♥
I prefer Panasonic or Sony users as my boyfriend,
Definitely more creative than Canikon users :D *LOL*
The dreaded ground loop! Such a huge pain in the butt. There are some things you could add that would isolate it, I wouldn't suggest doing that now that you've got everything finished but if you ever make a MARK II version let me know, I'd be happy to share what I know.
Thanks INTP! I'll keep that in mind.
Hey Caleb! Loved the video, an absolutely awesome rig you have built! Which *budget* wide-ish lenses do recommend for the GH4? Thank you in advance!
Awesome hack man! Good work!
I DESPERATELY WANNA SEE MORE VIDEOS ON HOW U MODDED THIS GH4!!!
and the wood is CLEAAAAAAAAAAN
Thanks AJ!
Thank you for all you do.
wow, this was next level!
Thanks Jamie! Shoot me an email and I'll hook you up ;-)
i hope Panasonic engineers saw this video =)
Great job and woodwork! :)
Gorgeous craftsmanship. Rig is awesome. Lens that was mounted in this video?
Thanks Optimize! It was a Nikon 55mm F1.2. Not the more expensive 50mm...
***** thanks for the reply, might have to look into it
Caleb you sneaky little f... Fantastic work dude
Heh! Thanks!
Please please please please please do the Gh4 vs a6300 video! I'm about to buy one of them and I don't want to make an expensive mistake!
Stay tuned!
Did you make an expensive mistake after all?
Can you do a video on just how you modified the irig pre to add a separate potentiometer and switches.
I might do that. I have a second unit laying around.
Mod looks awesome! Few questions: Top handle with wide angle lenses - does the peak of the handle show in the frame when you are using wider lenses? btw what is your widest focal length you use on your GH4? No problem!
Wow. Really, really good job !
Thanks Max!
I love these kind of video! Keep'em coming! :D
Thanks Lego!
Haha! XD
No prob! :P
