      I also do a side by side between gh5 and gh4 slomo if you want to check that out.

    Thank you! This is the *best* slow motion review of the GH4 I've found. I kept telling my peers that 96VFR looked bad and it's probably because it's chopping a 100mb bitrate up into 1/4ths but no one seemed to notice the difference despite it driving my eyes crazy.

      Yes 96 looks really grainy and has terrible moire.

      What lens are you using? Using a sharp lens can make the footage less soft and more usable. Also infinity focus helps to sharpen things up.

    I can't afford a better camera so i still use my GH4 for all purposes with the native 14-42 3.5 and a sigma 30mm 1.4. I hope i can upgrade soon. Brazil is terrible for filmmakers when we talkin' about pricing. Today I started filming sports and 60fps still isn't enough slow for me, so i guess i'll use 96fps and do a little post production. Thanks for explaining, still useful 7 years later!

      Definitely! A lot of the bits I'll be planning on filming will have some action in them (running), so it's good to know that going all the way to 96fps might not be the best. Time to test

      Base iso. Maybe “natural” profile and nail exposure in camera.

    What a fantastic breakdown of each of the slow motion settings and capabilities. I'm looking in to picking up a used gh4 to play around with, i'll definitely have to restrict the 96fps for extremely well lit, low contrast shots... if at all! Out of curiosity, what iso was this shot at? the grain in the background of the 400% blow ups seemed excessive.

  • @ldm

    Thanks! Have you played around with shooting in NTSC 60fps 200mbps to then conform to 25p?

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louis du Mont 60 doesn't go well into 25.
      It goes nicely into 24 (40%)
      You can do it. (60-25) but frame skipping can happen occasionally.
      When my gh5 arrives (tomorrow) I prob will be shooting in 60p 4K and then I may switch to 24p for my fun TH-cam work. :)

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louis du Mont bare in mind if you have lights in a scene then 60p will more likely have strobing too. (Will have to slow shutter down to an odd degree to avoid some strobing)
      But not a consideration shooting out in daylight.

    • @ldm
      @ldm 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I've yet to try any slow motion with the GH4. In my mind, I placed the VFR feature into the soft, artifacting video camp. Good to know it retains quality up to a point. I'm tempted by the GH5. 4K, 60p would be awesome.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louis du Mont (you have to stretch footage to 41.6666 or something like that. So it's a bit nasty.
      You could export all frames as a numbered sequence and bring them back in at the new frame rate. That should ensure no issues.
      But it's a bit of a faff.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louis du Mont I was putting it off. But couple of features that I really want to try out.
      I don't think the quality jump is very much at all for regular 4kshots. (Over gh4)
      But I really do like the idea of full sensor (using the whole FF lens) 4K slomo.
      Should make filming surfing so much better.
      Also the sensor crop as an option gives my 200mm a bit more reach if I need it.
      (Prob better option than using my 2x extender)

    • @newdadz
      @newdadz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the NTSC picture is smaller than PAL AFAIK, so indeed the 100mbps codec will be focused on a lower number of pixels, makes sense, thanks!

  • @criticalpoint7672
    @criticalpoint7672 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You used PAL for your tests and the 62 FPS VFR was the best setting, that's fine. But for NTSC wouldn't that mean that 62 FPS would turn into 75 FPS but with the same good quality ? So what I'm asking is this: 75 FPS/NTSC isn't equivalent in quality with 62 FPS/PAL ?

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Critical Point no I don’t believe so. It’s down to the bitrate. Line binning etc that camera does at a particular speed. Best result for ntsc would likely be 60 FPS played back half speed at 30.
      You will get the same quality as our 62 FPS played back at 25. But we would have 40% slow mo. And you would have 50% slow mo

    • @criticalpoint7672
      @criticalpoint7672 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see, so at least the GH4 is a good 1080p/60 FPS camera.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Critical Point yep for 1080 the 60/62 FPS on gh4 is quite nice indeed.
      Not as nice as the gh5 60 4K of course. :)
      But great for a cheaper camera.

    • @RIZZYEDITS
      @RIZZYEDITS 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So for 10% more slow motion capability your going to lower your bit rate using VFR to overcrack your FPS internally slowing down your footage. I thought it would make more sense to shoot double your FPS & bit rate and have the ability to play in realtime or slow it down or color graded it more heavily. You could by pass the 50% rule and go to 25% slow down using optical flow to blend frames. Let me know what you think.

    • @biscuitsalive

      50p is for PAL regions.

  • @antjarvis
    @antjarvis 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, well explained. Why don't you just shoot in 60p though, if all you're doing is using available frames as opposed to frame-rate? All good though.

    • @biscuitsalive
      @biscuitsalive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I'm in UK and we use PAL. so i have to switch frequency just to have the option of 60p. which is a pain if I'm filming normal scenes then flipping to slow mo. (it would screw up my shots if i accidentally filmed in 30p and also strobe with our lighting) So 50p is the option i have. and thats only half slow mo. where as 62 fps is more than 40% slow mo, so really does have more of a slow mo feel.

    • @antjarvis
      @antjarvis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed, I hadn't thought about not switching back to PAL. That could mess up your day! Thanks.
