    It may have been made 5 years ago, but I just saw this. Can’t believe how timely. I had seen this last evening then today I had to remove two rivets. What a find! Easy. My previous removals had left damage. This was exactly has shown. A belated thanks!!!

    I found another way to remove rivets, although less effective, it's great if you don't have the correct drill bit, if the rivet was set poorly or if it spins too much and the drill won't go through the rivet. I took a hole puncher 0.5 millimeters wider than the rivet post, and hammered it through the rivet. Since the post flattens into the female end of the rivet, the circle hole punch completely severs both end of the rivets. I took 9 rivets out of my project doing this today.

    I really like this series of The Leather Element. Great info for the amateur as well as more experienced. How about doing a tour of your workshop. Even though I'm just a hobbyist and can't possibly have a shop as complete as yours, seeing how you organize can give me ideas on how to do mine. I'm reminded of your video on table lighting using clamp lights.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply

      I am so glad you like The Leather Element! Thank you for your comment, and, great idea on the shop tour! As a crafter, I, like most all of us, spent many an hour working on the kitchen table. Good times! A larger, more complete, shop only means I walk more, clean more and I can now misplace items more efficiently over a larger territory!
      There are so many great ways to make a small workspace comfortable and functional. This is a great idea, and I am putting this on the idea board now! Keep watching and we’ll see if we can get a good video out there that can help!

    Thank you so much! I made a case that came out great except the snap on belt loop I improvised wasn't working as well as planned. I ordered a 2 part belt clip system but was worried I'd mangle the piece trying to pry the original attempt off. I'm so glad I saw this first! I was even able to reuse the original holes so I'm not constantly reminded of my mistake.

    Hi, a great video thank you. I have a question if I may. I need to accurately punch a 3mm hole through 3 pieces of 3mm of vegtan leather. This is to make the holes for double cap solid brass rivets for the Police dog leads. The hole punches I have all get thicker the more leather I punch through. Is it possible to get hole punches the don't widen out as they go deeper through up to 3 layers of leather? Thank you in anticipation.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there,
      The least amount of widening you're probably going to be able to find will be a spring punch but it will still widen a little bit. I've linked the CS Osborne single tube punch below if you'd like to take a look: www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/item-detail/cso153-3/single-tube-spring-punch-3/pr_14757

    Can you recycle the rivet heads and conchos? I have some decorative ones from my late grandfather's jacket, and I don't want to replace them with plain rivets. It would look terrible. Is there any way I can save the decorative rivets or conchos?

  • @AlexGardipe
    @AlexGardipe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I keep trying to do this with some quick rivets and it isn't working. Once I have the drill bit on the piece it will grip and spin but it doesn't end up detatching. What am I doing wrong?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alex,
      If the rivet is loose enough to spin, you'll need to set it tighter. Just use the rivet setter and tap it with your mallet so it's tight, that way the drill will actually start drilling through the rivet, not just spinning it.

    What about a copper rivet with a burr? I have used my dremel in the past but it wasn't perfect.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the copper rivets/burrs because they are there to stay! The dremel may be the best way. A larger drill/bit may speed the process a little, but those are tough to remove, which is exactly what makes them great rivets!

    • @TheWhedgit
      @TheWhedgit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My biggest issue with removing them is when a long post is used through thick leather and the post has been bent in between several layers of leather pinching them together. Makes it even more difficult to get them apart. Haven't had one I couldn't get but some of them were tough.

    I am new to leather crafting and leather making and leather tools. how do I know what leather would be for certain projects? when is a heavier leather needed vs lighter leather? what are the benefits to lighter vs heavier leather? what is a good beginners toolkit?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This chart about what projects each thickness is used for should answer your questions: www.weaverleathersupply.com/learn/leather-101/leather-thickness
      As far as the beginner's toolkit, here are some basic tools to get started, but as you progress, each element will require a certain set of tools/materials, such as dyeing, stamping and lacing. Try this list of 10 items to get started:
      -Leather-I would suggest an 8/9 oz veg-tan because this is a standard weight and a very versatile leather that can be formed, sewn, dyed, stamped…
      -Steel Square
      -Utility Knife
      -Poly or Rawhide mallet
      -Poundo Board-for cutting patterns and leather
      -Revolving Punch-punching all manner of holes
      -Rivet setter and Double Cap rivets-A selection of small and medium would be best
      -Quartz slab-for setting rivets/eyelets/grommets and for stamping and tooling. The slab is, typically, the heart of your leather shop.
      - Oil dye (the color of your choice)
      -Leather Balm-Top Coat
      As you progress, you can start adding elements and the associated tools for those elements (usually very affordable) such as setting buckles, setting snaps, stamping/tooling, lacing, antiquing, hand sewing and so many more!
      I hope this helps in getting you started!

  • @KillingIsBadong
    @KillingIsBadong 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    How would you remove a double-cap rivet? As you mentioned, the cap will make the drill bit wander and scratch the leather.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are right! The cap wants to spin and it can be frustrating! The cheaper rivets have an open back so the drill goes straight to the post, but the double cap (used in the video) wants to spin, so, I need to punch with the awl first. This pushes the cap into the post and helps to keep it from spinning. It will spin, but, a second hit with the setter and it should pop right off.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you don't have a drill, you can use cutting nippers and try to get under the head of the rivet and cut off the head and then the rest of rivet should be able to be popped out. Just be careful not to scratch the leather when doing that. Hope that helps!

      I'm sorry you're having trouble with this. If you can't get the rivet out using a drill, about the only other thing to do is try to get nippers under the rivet head and cut the head off. Hi Joanna,
      A drill is the easiest way but not the only way.You can try clipping the rivet cap or back off by using a cutting nipper - you just have to be more careful because the nippers can mark the leather up. Once the cap or back is removed you can usually pop the rivet out using a scratch awl.

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Smaller grommets will drill out the same way, but, the larger grommets are a bit more difficult (3/8” and up). The front part of the grommet/male piece has the post and the back is simply a washer, so all you need to do is take a pair of pliers and, on the back side of the grommet, squeeze the portion of the post that has come through the washer and curled. You just have to squeeze it inward enough to get the washer to come over the post. This isn’t a perfect process, but it should remove the grommet without damaging the leather.
