  • The ultimate simulated Concorde experience: A full flight from London to New York, using real-world crew audio, ATC, checklists, procedures, charts, routings and more!
    In today's video we're going heading towards the edge of space; where the sky gets darker, where you can see the curvature of the earth. We're going to be travelling across the Atlantic ocean at twice the speed of sound - faster than a rifle bullet. We'll cover 23 miles every minute, travelling faster than the Earth's rotation and we'll be arriving at our destination before we even departed. All of this. . . and yet we won't be spilling even a single drop of champagne enroute!
    Today ladies and gentlemen, we are of course going to be flying Concorde.
    We'll be operating Speedbird 001, the British Airways morning Concorde service from London Heathrow, over towards New York's John F Kennedy. I have tried to recreate the flight as accurately as possible; using a real-world routing, real world checklists, techniques, procedures and charts, as well as real-world ATC. I have even included some real-world Concorde audio clips along the way.
    In terms of our routing; takeoff will be from London Heathrow's runway 27L on the Compton 3G departure. We'll be tracking westbound out towards waypoint KESUP and once we're out over the Bristol channel, we'll be accelerating ourselves up towards Mach 2, leaving Concorde's iconic sonic boom in our wake. We'll be traversing the Northern Atlantic at some 60.000ft, covering over 1,100 miles every hour. It will take us just a little over 3 hours and 75 tonnes of Jet A1 to transport our 87 passengers, in absolute comfort, from the old world to the new. Having departed London at 10:30 local time, we'll be arriving into New York in time for breakfast.
    We'll be flying the excellent, broadly "study level" Colimata Concorde within X-Plane 11. This video is really intended as a little homage to the spectacular machine that is Concorde. So I do hope you enjoy the journey, as we make our way over the Atlantic at twice the speed of sound.
    A big thank you also to ‪@UPS1000‬ and ‪@pillow-pilot‬ for your excellent tutorials! They were a big help in getting Concorde up in the air : )

      Me too Peter! DC Designs did say they would continue to work on and upgrade their Concorde, but I haven't seen much sign of that yet sadly. . . Either way, it would be a lot of work to get the DC Designs Concorde up to this sort of standard. FSLabs are apparently brining their Concorde to MSFS in due course; that is supposed to be the "gold standard" of Concorde simulations, so I'm really looking forward to that when the time comes (it's probably still a couple of years away though realistically).

      I think so too MD. I gather the FSLabs version, has the Colimata Concorde beat on systems / flight modelling accuracy, but it's obviously looking very dated at this point, so I feel that the Colimata Concorde offers a good balance. The narrow body and long rows of seats give a type of trapped inside a coffin feel as you walk past the seats only about a three feet , walk way . For what seamed a extremely long and tight fit . Not a place were a evacuated could be orderly done . Especially if the jet was not level . I would rather walk than think about flying it one honestly . The fight cab was truly filled with all types of gages and even the pilots seats were cramped looking . The strange shape of the steering wheel reminded me of a child’s Tricycle that was very thin in construction . I was glad not to be the one flying in one . But had the full run of the aircraft at the Boeing museum in Seattle Washington . Were even JFK last presidential jet had come to be parked . Again I had full run of that aircraft as well as many others and for the very great price suggest anyone to go and really get close and personal with so many historical aircraft , that a full day must be taken just to go through most of the really amazing aircraft . Take many pictures as they are worth your collection of photos. As well as being free to really explore the insides and outsides of modern advanced x planes and older B17 that even allow you to fly in as well , as crawl through the many places of the crews spaces to get a feel of just how Vulnerable and even tight fitting gun seats that again one has to see to believe

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, certainly sounds like a great day out at the museum Colin (it's always nice when you can actually get onto the aircraft and *really* look around)!
      Concorde is indeed quite a claustrophobic design, but for good reason of course. Not as comfortable as some might first imagine, but then I guess one only had to endure being a bit hemmed in for 3 hours or so; I'm sure a glass of champagne or two, might have helped alleviate any discomfort ; )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi DFYFC,
      I used a bit of a mix overall. The addon does come with a couple of nice manuals that cover the basics, but I also watched a few TH-cam tutorials, read around online and had a couple of practice runs working through the checklists. A lot of Concorde's systems are much like any other jet, so most of my reading was around how to accelerate up to supersonic speeds, how to manage the descent etc - really focusing on the nuances of the Concorde operation.
      I hope that clarifies things a little? All the best! : )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David,
      With quite a bit of tweaking it has to be said haha. I use Enhanced Skyscapes for the clouds / sky visuals (which makes a huge difference) and then I also run ShadeX to bump up the saturation / exposure (as I find X-Plane can look a little drab by default). It's not perfect, but I think it makes for a big improvement over default X-Plane 11 and almost brings the sim onto a par with X-Plane 12 I would say.
      I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

    How come the Concord SST can go at mach 2 when the Boeing 737 Max on Flight Simulator 2020 cannot even go at nots?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Samuel,
      Well, the basic reason is aerodynamics; that and an abundance of thrust. Concorde is designed to produce low drag and cope with the aerodynamic peculiarities of supersonic flight; it also has four afterburning engines. The 737 on the other hand, is designed to be economical and as a result only needs to be able to fly at about 80% the speed of sound (therefore drag is less of a factor and only two relatively modest power plants are required).
      I hope that broadly answers your question? Cheers and all the best! : )

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ronnie, apologies for the slow reply.
      It is indeed an X-Plane 11 addon, as VH points out. I would say that Concorde is more complex to learn than most addons, primarily because it has some unusual systems / procedures, but it's not out of reach for anybody that can nail down a 737 etc. The aircraft is definitely more demanding to fly than your average commercial jet though, primarily because you're forced to do the work of 3 men, with everything happening rather quickly at the same time haha.
      I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, the Colimata version is a significant cut above VH. The visual modelling is much more accurate (particularly internally), hence the "look" I suppose and the systems depth / flight modelling is much greater also. The Colimata Concorde is a really nice addon overall and I gather it'll be coming to X-Plane 12 also, so I am looking forward to trying it out there : )

      @AmatørFoto Nothing new much. It doesn't look like DC Designs is really working on this and honestly there's a lot to catch up on...
      Their argument is that they put a lot of work in the fidelity, but that part also is not impressive.
      Most of the controls seem to be here for the show, you can set engine rating climb rating secondary doors etc. to any position you want and the aircraft will not fly differently even with maximum realism. Even fuel management doesn't seem to do much on the behavior (besides feeding the engine, the fuel management during the descent is fun). Some annoying things such as the autothrottle can turn the reheat on.
      Given its current quality it should be priced at $15 not $40. If made truly study level with a decent cockpit I'd agree to pay $60+.

      For the weather visuals, I am using Enhanced Skyscapes. The actual weather modelling is just the default X-Plane 11 real-world weather though.

    I wonder if anyone is good enough to do this sim for MSFS? FSx did a great job, simulated accel out of afterburner and climb to FL600. I doubt anyone has the programming skill to do this aircraft in MSFS? Let alone include comprehensive real worlds crew sounds! Would be quite something though, wouldnt it?

      Hello David,
      I gather FSLabs will actually be bringing their Concorde-X to MSFS. It's probably still a few years in the making at the moment, but I suspect the addon will be every bit as good as you describe! It would indeed be quite something : )

      Hi AA,
      For sure X-Plane isn’t as pretty as MSFS, but the sim’s strengths lie elsewhere. The Colimata Concorde is done to a much higher standard than DC Designs’ version for example, hence why I wanted to use X-Plane for this video.

      Hi EMD,
      Yes, I believe the FSLabs Concorde is the “gold standard” for realism / accuracy. It’s currently only available for 32bit versions of FSX / P3D though (in fact, I’m not even sure it’s on sale any more) and obviously looks a bit dated as a result. I gather FSLabs are bringing the product to P3D V5 and ultimately MSFS also, so definitely worth keeping an eye on.
      Overall I think the Colimata Concorde is a very nice offering and has more than enough functionality for most.
      I hope you’re keeping well! All the best : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Little late to the party, but yea, the old FSLabs Concorde X is no longer available for purchase. They took it off the market some time around 2020 if I remember correctly. The systems simulation was certainly excellent, but the last time I booted FSX to fly it the sim was really showing it's age. Struggling to maintain 30 fps, no volumetric lighting support, lots of scenery textures that looked like they wouldn't be out of place on a PS2. Plus when they built it they were already running up to the design limits of the sim. The flight engineer's panels were all 2D popouts because the 32 bit sim just didn't have the memory available to render all the panels in 3D
