This was another great video, I was on the fence about upgrading the pickups in my Ibanez travel bass because I wasn’t sure if it was worth cost. However since I’m planning on keeping the bass for a while and hearing the difference those Geezer Buttler pickups made I’m sold on the idea. Thank you once again, you were extremely helpful.
Saw a different video and I was like damn, why doesn't this dude have more subscribers??? I see why now, this 22 minute pickup installation video, being as long as it is, didn't show the actual installation of the pickups....
It's plug and play. Self explanatory. I'll be posting a set-up of my own Micro, and I'll talk real slow and point out all the solder connections, or you can just go on Seymour Duncan's wiring page.
I just recently got that same Micro bass and was wondering what is the correct string height above the pickups? Great channel you’ve got here! Very helpful.
Pickup height bass side 1/8" and treble side 3/32". 5/64" string height on bass side and 4/64" on treble side. Allow for 12" radius using radius gauge.
I'm confused... you show us: unscrewing the back plate, removing tape, tuning the guitar. But not installing the electronics or the pickups. I feel like I got served the vegetables and not the ribeye steak.
Do you find the EMG set add "growl" to the tone? I've always wanted the growl of the Spector Euro in my Ibanez PJ but idk whether upgrading the pickups to an EMG set is enough
Thanks Stringman! Watched P1 & 2 and the other upgrade vid on the black bass. Good stuff. EMG Geezer vs SD Quarter Pounder, do you like one over the other better? Do the Geezer’s come with the plug’n play pots? Looks like you got a kit with PU’s and pots. What pots would you recommend for the the SD’s? Also where did you get the black knobs. Mine are chrome.
On The red one I used Emerson 250k full sized pots. Pull back wire and a Switchcraft output jack. The GEEZER set comes with all the pots but you should replace the crappy factory jack with a Switchcraft barrel jack as the one in the kit doesn't come with a barrel jack. Picked up knobs at local store.
@@stringmanguitars4329 Thank you, Stringman. You wouldn't happen to have links handy for the Emerson pots (is that the same as CTS? and are those taper?) and Switchcraft parts, would ya? :-)
I just got one of these yesterday, Friday Jan 21, 2022. At one time I had a KAPA bass. It was totally awesome. That was in 1965. I believe it had a HOFNER brand single pickup. The size of this Ibanez fits me perfectly. Is there anything you can do other than what you did in this video? What else is there? I want to ship it to you disassembled after I repaint it white......like my kapa. Then have you do your magic, put it back together and Shipp it back. Whatcha’ think?
I recently bought a 5-string Mikro. Would love to swap out the bridge, the tuning machines, the pickups and get it set up. How much do you charge on top of cost of hardware? I live in LA though and don't mind shipping the bass over if I can afford your service :)
I'd go with the Hipshot Kickass Bridge. Gotoh tuners and Seymour Duncan's Quarter Pound set or the EMG Geezer pickups, which are plug and play. Don't send here because of the radical change in climate. Find a good local tech. I'd love to do one, but it's not worth the possible issues that would crop up.
@@stringmanguitars4329 Hello sir. I noticed my comment(s) have been deleted by TH-cam since they got confused as spams. You suggested the Hipshot Kickass Bridge and I notice there are multiple variations of that - and I am confused over which one to choose - the different mount styles and high mass or regular and so forth... Since I am a totally newbie to this, can you shed some more light? Many many thanks!
@@khchan5835 decimate Definitely the Kick Ass bridge. Our lines up perfectly with the screw beside the potentiometer. Plug and redrill the others. Easy. The other Hipshot Type A was measure and hope. Also the string spacing is adjustable on the Hipshot Kickass Bridge.
Stated watching as I wanted to hear how good the new pickups would be, but ended up falling asleep . Then when the actual sound test happened it was through a guitar amp, not a bass amp, which is never going to give a true representation of bass sound. Thanks but I'll keep looking elsewhere.

I go by the pickup manufacturer suggestions or the pickup height gage if that’s not available. The tool is like $15 on Amazon.

Hi. Just bought a second hand one of these. Should get it next mon/Tue. What height were you setting the pickups from strings please.
Cheers john 😃😃👍👍

They’re plug and play so if you buy from a place with 30 day return policy it’s nothing lost but time.

For flats I like the Geezer. For rounds definitely the Quarter Pounders.

@@stringmanguitars4329 One more question, Stringman, how do you remove the knobs? Are those collet knobs?
All I wanted was to see the pickup installation. Keep looking...
I'm just working on another one of these builds. Look for a video for that one soon. It's a bit more in depth.
I’m totally planning on doing this! But I’ve never swapped pickups before.
With the EMG GZR set, it’s all plug and play. No soldering.
What about the output jack? Doesn’t that need to be soldered since the emg one doesn’t fit?

I don't take in shipped guitars. Too much chance of damage. Thank you though!

Would those emg be pj or p?
I'm building one for myself. I bought the Hipshot Kickass in black. In this video it's the Hipshot Type A.
Enjoyed both videos. Did you have to do a lot of drilling for the Hipshot Kickass replacement? Which bridge do you like better? Thanks
