I love the ease of play in a short scale. For me it is worth some sacrifice sonically to be able to play quickly and with ease for long periods of time. In short scale with that lesser tension you are losing some of the tightness in the lows/mid that a full scale has but I think that will change with developments in bass design and string gauge.

Great review!! One thing about short scales, 31 inches or less, is that there is much less string tension. Even more so in this case with the Ibanez being 28 inches. I would not recommend drop tunings with this instrument because even if you can get the low e string down to d it will be way to muddy and undefined. You could probably get away with E flat but that is where I would stop. Nice playing bud
Don Nix I see comments like these all the time. Have you considered thicker strings? That should compensate. String tension, if I’m correct on this, is a product of scale length, string gauge, and desired frequency. So, if scale length decreases, you simply increase string gauge.
Taylor Pearcy Certainly is something worth trying. I recently picked up a short scale jaguar bass from fender/squier and it is a nice guitar. I find it however easier to play 34 inch scale bass guitars just from learning to play on a full scale p bass.
Moskito H yea, 28.6 is pretty damn short. I’m thinkin about getting an Ibanez Mezzo, at 32 inches you probably shouldn’t have toooo much of a tension issue, and I’d be very interested to see if there’s any significant difference in playability compared to my 35 scale ESP
@@taylorpearcy319 From point of view of playability I like my shortscales, from point of view of sound the regular size. The nice thing with this bass is that I could fit it into a guitar bag for taking with me.

I have a mid-70s version of a Greco reproduction of a Rickenbacker. Solid bass, but it weighs a ton. Plus having small hands a short-scale sounds great.
I got one and didn't get on very well with it atall. And that's considering I am mainly a guitar player, not really a bassist. Ended up getting a full size Sire Jazz bass and am getting on with it a lot better- even though it is a lot bigger and heavier.
5 string or drop tunings with shortscale do not work good together. Deeper tones will sound much less brilliant. Already with this bass, exchanging strings can give you better sounds on e string.
That jaded LowEndLobster guy would have knocked off a few points for some of the issues you encountered: knobs that work like on/ off switches and implied QC issues at the factory - with regard to the blemishes and the intonation/ set up problems that had you returning it to be replaced with another one. It sounds like it worked out though and this may be the bass for me also; but I clearly have to keep open the option to be able to return a faulty instrument.
Question to anybody who can answer: the split coil on this bass has the upper half closer to the bridge, but my Cort Action PJ has the upper half closer to the neck. I see variation between brands and models. Doesn’t the configuration affect the tone or the sensitivity?
I have a 4 and 5 string, upgraded the 4 pickups to Alan Entwhistle's, and use it for all recording, the stock pickups weren't bad themselves, they'll be used on another bass.
I bought one of these a little while back and I love it. I got tired of killing my back every time I took my GSR206 out with me. It sounds great for what it is. I take it with me to be able to practice on my breaks at work and stuff. Great travel bass, especially if you own more expensive instruments that you dont want to get banged up. I mean I carry it my heavily padded Gator Case gig bag anyway, but still. It’s a good cheap bass. Mine is the Metallic Rootbeer.
PS the fretboard is definitely not rosewood. Its treated New Zealand pine. Thats if yours is identical to mine and it seems to be. EDIT; for anyone interested in a side by side comparison of rosewood and New Zealand Pine, check out my account on Imgbb. Account name: Cheburek_hehe
How is the low F and F#? I have two of the full scale versions and I literally had to file the 2nd and 3 frets cause they wouldn't play regardless of truss rod adjustments and saddle height.
I share the sentiment on the satin finish. Polyurethane finishes look great on the wall but to play with day to day, big nah. They just feel nasty and get super fingerprinted
Howdy, I was formerly using SR bass then went for BTB 35" for tone and i guess i cannot get into it... also thinking about shortscale for deep bottom sound and similarity with guitar. From the video, is it me or your strings are pretty high action. I think it should be about 2,5mm for E at 24 fret or less if picking up lightly and 2 mm or less on treble side. Thanks for the review tho. For the money it seems to be pretty steal (even with a tuners and bridge update in future) and still cheaper than a Squier SS used here...
I just checked and the action is 4mm and 3mm at the 22 fret so I think it could definitely benefit from a little setup for sure but overall very playable still. I haven't tried the Squier but from what i know of their cheap strat i wouldn't go down that road... Thank's for your input !
Some GHS Fast Fret, using it since i started guitar years ago, could never go back ! Highly recommend it 👍 🙂 let us know if you're happy with your purchase, cheers !
For sure, i like cheap that works 👍 as much as i love artisanal local handmade beauty, That's the positive aspect of those multinational china guitars..
I like the purple look ! They should do it with maple fingerboard it would look awesome. Well i wouldnt recommend anyone to play this without an amp to be honest. If the sound is a problem i would try to hook it up to an amp with headphone output or to a computer 👍 let us know what you think of your bass once it's there 🙂
I really don't know anything about bass strings, maybe someone else can answer your question. I usually go with D'addario EXL for guitar and I'm always happy
Hi Quentin. I just SUBSCRIBED to the channel. I'm a beginner bassist and I just purchased this bass. How difficult is it to replace the POTS for this guitar? Thanks.
Hi Richard, welcome to my channel. I didn't change the pots on the bass yet but i assume it's like any other, there is plenty of tutorials on youtube i'm sure you'll find what you're looking for :)
If you know how to solder, it is not such a big issue. Just check, that the new one matches. I am planing to exchange mine, can post the used one afterwards.
Is this recommended for a serious playing? I'm starting a band with my good buddies, and we agreed to take things seriously. The bassist is a guitarist-turn-to-bassist who struggled to reach the frets of a bass.. Will this be good & okay for gigging (or even professional use) after component upgrades?
Definitly, already usable out of the box in most cases, but if you have extra budget I would upgrade in this order : First change the electronics, then strings, then the pickups, then have a setup done by a professional.
For anyone else wondering the same as me and the person above me: the B at the end of the name stands for Black (as in: with black hardware instead of chrome)
Definitely. Just keep in mind that one of the most important thing is to have it set up properly to be easy to play. If you have some money aside for a Luthier check and maybe swap the pots and jack input for higher end you'll have a very solid frustration-free instrument that will last you years.
Sorry for the late reply your comment slipped thru my notifications somehow. You can adjust string height and make sure the neck is not bowed or one fret higher than the others. Otherwise just press firmly the string as close as possible to the frets on the pickup side. Hope it helped !
Make sure you check out this bass in my latest song "Cosmic Trance" :

PS the fretboard is definitely not rosewood. Its treated New Zealand pine.
Thats if yours is identical to mine and it seems to be.
EDIT; for anyone interested in a side by side comparison of rosewood and New Zealand Pine, check out my account on Imgbb.
Account name: Cheburek_hehe
Oh great thanks for your input ! Looks so similar it's hard to tell
@@QuentinDamour ^^
It's definitely advertised as rosewood, but I don't know much about wood so dunno.
Mine is definitely rosewood way too hard to be any type of pine
@@QuentinDamour since then Ive learned that some of these have been rosewood and some have been treated New Zealand pine (like mine).
We got a fellow tool fan here haha
Is it easy to drop D It?
Which model is this one?
I just bought the same one today...I love her.
Is the bass in the review the Walnut finish because the colour in the video looks deep red, I thought Walnut was dark brown?
It has a slight red hue but it's definitely walnut brown in real life
How is the low F and F#? I have two of the full scale versions and I literally had to file the 2nd and 3 frets cause they wouldn't play regardless of truss rod adjustments and saddle height.
I share the sentiment on the satin finish. Polyurethane finishes look great on the wall but to play with day to day, big nah. They just feel nasty and get super fingerprinted
I wonder if it's to keep the costs down or just bad choices from the brands...
Thanks for the review. It helps !
Happy to hear that !
I wanted to buy this, watched several youtube videos saying its better change the tuner to gotoh for better play. What doyou think?
If you have the budget, sure why not. Not absolutely essential to me. I would upgrade in this order : 1- electronics 2-strings 3-tuners 4-pickups
Just got one too. Very surprised.
Bonjour Quentin,
Merci pour cette superbe vidéo. Dommage,
Je n'ai pas tout compris en raison de mon niveau d'anglais... Combien pèse cette basse ?
Environ 3 kg, plutôt légère.
Merci !
I just ordered mine on Amazon lol lol 😂 I can’t wait to get it in my hands 🙌
Whats the diff between this an the Mezza?
I have one of these. Actually was pleasantly surprised with the quality and tone. Especially for the price.
@@QuentinDamour At worst, your notes are clean as they can be without any buzz and sustains forever. :)
Thank you so much for this review, you convinced me to buy it! What amp are you using??
straight in the soundcard for me, no amp.
Do you still have this bass? If so, do you still recommend this bass?
Hi, yes i do and yes it's still a good pick in my opinion
@@QuentinDamour Thanks for the help! Love your other video where you are using this bass👌🎶❤
@@QuentinDamour would it be worth the extra $100 to get a sterling by music man sub series over this? I’m torn
Awesome review...thanks man
Good review man , thanks!
You're very welcome mate, thank's for the comment !
Came in rough shape must have got it from guitar center.
Quel est le produit que tu as mis pour nettoyer la saleté? Au citron...
Merci
Dunlop Lemon Oil après avoir nettoyé avec dunlop 6502 "clean and prep"
It is a great bass for me as a rookie!!!!👍
Nice taste in music my man.
Also in case anyone's wondering:
The two songs he played are
Tool- the pot
And
Tool- schism
Both great begginer songs.
What did you rub over the strings.?. .after you applied the lemon oil. I ordered the same model/colour today.
What was it then ?
Some GHS Fast Fret, using it since i started guitar years ago, could never go back ! Highly recommend it 👍 🙂 let us know if you're happy with your purchase, cheers !
Will standard tuning make the strings floppy on such a short scale?
Standard is alright 👍
The only real way to improve on this bass is to practice;) I put some flat wounds on my daughter’s bass and it plays like butter now.
Those are nice little basses, Quentin. Also, very affordable.
For sure, i like cheap that works 👍 as much as i love artisanal local handmade beauty, That's the positive aspect of those multinational china guitars..
i ordered my purple!! but can you do a video playing this without amp!
I like the purple look ! They should do it with maple fingerboard it would look awesome. Well i wouldnt recommend anyone to play this without an amp to be honest. If the sound is a problem i would try to hook it up to an amp with headphone output or to a computer 👍 let us know what you think of your bass once it's there 🙂
Any string recommendations? I was thinking about DR Hi-Beams since I can't find any Ernie Ball short scale strings.
I really don't know anything about bass strings, maybe someone else can answer your question. I usually go with D'addario EXL for guitar and I'm always happy
@@QuentinDamour Ok, thanks man!
I bought this bass partly on the basis of this video. I restrung it with lighter string, it’s awesome. Helps my tiny hands 😅
Dudes accent is legit!!1!
Bro really got me playing schism
Salut, tu pourrais nous faire une petite revue de ton set-up matos d'enregistrement ?
Merci 😉
Possible..😜
Good review Brother thank you
This looks exactly like my JS 23 walnut finish Jackson bass, just a different brand is all.
Yeah I saw that the Jackson Minion looks pretty much the same as this one. Better bridge on the Jackson's I've heard.
I just ordered an Ibanez Mikro Bass GSRM20 however mine doesn't have the B at the end. Is there any difference?
For anyone else wondering the same as me and the person above me: the B at the end of the name stands for Black (as in: with black hardware instead of chrome)
I am trying to start playing the bass and am a bit smaller, do you think this would be suitable for a beginner?
Definitely. Just keep in mind that one of the most important thing is to have it set up properly to be easy to play. If you have some money aside for a Luthier check and maybe swap the pots and jack input for higher end you'll have a very solid frustration-free instrument that will last you years.
@@QuentinDamour tysm!
Do you know how to get rid of fret buzz?
By playing it right
Sorry for the late reply your comment slipped thru my notifications somehow. You can adjust string height and make sure the neck is not bowed or one fret higher than the others. Otherwise just press firmly the string as close as possible to the frets on the pickup side. Hope it helped !
