Dave, for future reference: the little squeeze connector with the orange button (3M calls them Scotchlok) has internal blades that slice through the insulation of the wires, so you don't need to strip the wires before inserting them into the connector. Even fewer tools required!

They are handy and quick, they are also an inferior option to a good solder job and less reliable. As to install them correctly you're basically cutting approximately 1/3 of your conductors as they cut through the jacket and into the strands themselves.

@@dennisapplegate7553 I was deferring comment, so glad you did. I'm old school, built many custom amps, had a 66 JB for years, I now have a PB with a maple neck, I actually prefer it for access to the strings when muscling it, plus there's a uniqueness to the PB 'pop' that a JB misses.
Which brings me to soldering [it's still the most reliable way of doing electronic connections, required still by some military and aviation regs rather than push-ons, including using 60/40 lead/tin solder (the newer lead-free type whiskers)] and has me questioning why anyone would want to change-out perfectly wonderful real PB p/u s for some bloke's concept of how the PB should sound.

left on that indo is the body, with a 2 9/16hs neck pocket. Epoxied in a Mitey mite P neck. Added threaded inserts so 6 bolts on neck No shims string height was dead on. Franken bass. Hey Dave, all my guitars are singing. Thanks. My Fender mim pj special edition requires a .050 wrench for the saddle height, which be hard to find. I have found that a 1.3 mm works well. The .050 is a stupid price break from standard hex wrench $, and probably not at your local Bored and Screwed, yet the 1.3mm can usually be had at the harbour freight. Look for the little flat case with every other TINY bit you need, And the flexy driver. Neither of these wrenches are consistant with the specs that Fender themselves gives for this bass. Peace and Black Sabbath! Constant sneeze for 10 minutes. Cheers folks!

@@tylerwmbass ? You don't even have to physically contact your strings to introduce stray electrostatic and/or magnetic fields into your pickups. The bridge and tuners still need to be grounded, any inductive or electrostatic materials of size in the instrument need to be grounded. Standard bridge grounds, but also I have the cavities connected to ground. But... I also have two Spector basses that came with active EMGs. They have cavity shielding, but there is no provision for a ground wire to the bridge at all, no hole is even drilled for one. They are the quietest basses I've even played. They also have active preamps installed, in addition to the active preamps installed inside the pick ups. Nothing is externally grounded to the strings or bridge, just the path through the cable to the amp. Active EMGs need no bridge ground.

    • @stephensaines7100
      @stephensaines7100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So would I. Unless you have gold or silver surfaces in contact with each other (and even they display a barrier when oxidized) it's just asking for noise and intermittents by not soldering them.
You wouldn't do this in a mike circuit, albeit they're typically 1/10 the signal, assuming you have the pots turned up full, because you can hear the degraded signal path in many cases, so why do it on a first class instrument like a genuine Fender P-Bass?
The 1/4" jacks and plug tips are a constant source of bad connections to begin with, but at least that's an itch you can scratch by twisting the plug once inserted to clean the contact surfaces each time you plug-in.
      Oxidized contacts internally? Grrrrr.....

I got some EMG J Bass pickups but they don't come with tone knobs and my jazz bass ones don't fit? Do I need to get concentric tone knobs? :/

I hit same issue when I fitted them to my J & D surf green bass. You can see the fun I had with it on my channel. Pretty sure it is 6mm inner diameter shaft. I got some decent feeling ones for an amplifier. The cheap from the usual suspect just didn't fit. If you have a vernier you might be able to check if yours are also 6mm. Don't get the D shape. Needs to be a full cylinder.
They are lovely pickups - the active ones are so quiet at rest. Lovely sound on my Orange amp. Or in a DI box.

@@stephenhookings1985 It says on my EMG instruction (I fitted them in earlier) that the solid silver bit at top is 6 and then the gold slighter thicker bit underneath is 8, so that's why Isk if I get the concentric ones :/ I haven't fitted the control plat or got tone lobs yet

@@tomasomiadhachain2411 ah sorry didn't realise you have the stacked pots. Have you tried "Dont tell the wife" in US? Or even EMG direct? My pots are two volumes and tone. So simple 6mm worked for me.

@@stephenhookings1985 yeah I got the EMG J bass set, I don't know if the stock jazz bass tone knobs are 6mm or not, it just says (6) and then (8) on the instruction manual so I'm just assuming they're in mm 🤷🏻‍♂️ What's Don't Tell The Wife? I'm in the UK haha, should I just get some average 6mm knobs and some concentric ones just to be safe? :)

@@tomasomiadhachain2411 if its the EMG J then I got mine from Amazon. It is single diameter single control. I got Taiss/ 4pcs Black Aluminum Rotary Electronic Control Potentiometer Knob For 6 mm Diameter Shaft, Volume Control
Not sure I made any videos with them fitted but the look the cats cods. Feel great too.
If you spec the additional dual shaft BQS type tone controls then these have two controls per pot. Something like this might work. NEW - Gotoh VK15T / VK18T Mini Stacked Concentric Knob for 6mm/8mm Pots - BLACK
Like you I took cheap bass expensive pickups decent amp or DI route. And the quality of the pickups means they aren't expensive - just well engineered. No need to shield the active ones. The time saving of shielding makes them well worth it.
Hope you find the right knobs. I know in my video I lamented the need for new knobs :-)
