I was 6 in 1992 when I heard this song for the first time and I didn't want it to end. Lol I grew up in the hood lol and its needless to say no one understood but music like this inspired me and played instrumental im my drive towards becoming the success I am today. Tom waits introduced me to me.

Always loved this hilarious song. On the surface it sounds like a tribute to old-timey home-town life, swelling with a brass band and glockenspiel. But listen closely and hear as the grumbly old-timer describes his neighborhood - he does nothing but complain about the traffic and the noise and how nothing is as good as it once was. I know people just like that! Waits brings the character to life with sharpness and wit and yet also with warmth. Brilliant.

Bought this as a 7" single when I was 13 in 1983. Played it over and over again. Still like this song as much almost 40 years later. Nothing wrong with other singles from that year.. Bonnie Tyler - Total eclipse of the heart.. Toto - Africa.. Men at work - Down under.. The Police - Every breath you take.. but none of them are timeless in the way In the neighborhood are. Pretty sure I will listen to Tom Waits the next 40 years as well..

As a recovering Tom Waits addict, I haven't listened to him for 15 years because most of his songs makes me suicidal. But this song has been stuck in my head all week and it's pretty far from depressing, so I just decided to relapse. And it was wonderful ❤.

For me, on the surface it’s about the minor middle-class annoyances of living in the American suburbs, and how good we have it. But it’s set to this glorious All-American marching-band tune, which is musical sarcasm. The dichotomy of this proud, prototypical American who salutes the flag complaining, unhappy, speaks to a greater erosion of the middle-class, how the American dream ain’t that satisfying, and something darker and sadder lurking beneath the mild discontent.

And the dogs tipped the garbage pails over last night
And there's always construction work bothering you
    In the neighborhood

    In the neighborhood
    Well, Friday's a funeral and Saturday's a bride
Sey's got a pistol on the register side
And the goddamn delivery trucks, they make too much noise
And we don't get our butter delivered no more
    In the neighborhood
    In the neighborhood
    In the neighborhood
Well, Big Mambo's kicking his old greyhound
And the kids can't get ice cream 'cause the market burned down
And the newspaper sleeping bags blow down the lane
And that goddamn flatbed's got me pinned in again
    In the neighborhood
    In the neighborhood
    In the neighborhood
There's a couple Filipino girls gigglin' by the church
And the window is busted and the landlord ain't home
And Butch joined the army, yeah, that's where he's been
And the jackhammer's diggin' up the sidewalks again
    In the neighborhood

The kind of funeral parade I would like to have, saw a funeral director the other week and said I want it to be simple, just a cardboard casket with a one rope handle. To which he replied, "Why ?' Gave him the following reply, "If Jesus could drag a wooden cross, then I can drag a cardboard casket !'. The rest has been taken care of, the band is organized, the mini pies and sausage rolls with ketchup and a case of Rum. Can't give you the date yet, but you're most welcome along to celebrate.

The little rascals have grown up and have gotten a little bit arty, but that's ok.

The guy in the fur coat is Captain Beefheart.

He's not. He's an actor nicknamed 'The Cat" they got from an open-call. I've interviewed Michael Russ who shot the album cover for Swordfishtrombones, and was one of the co-directors of this video with the legendary Haskell Wexler.

Wow. I was convinced that was Don. He looks just like him! The fancy fur coat also seems like something Beefheart would wear. Maybe he snuck through under an alias!
