Peter Gabriel, like all true artists, knows and appreciates that all good music connects with our emotions. Tom Waits knows this too. Both are geniuses in my book.
I come back to this video all the time, it is a special preserved musical moment. For those bitching about his introduction, his words are meaningful and he's giving his thoughts on a great song by a great songwriter, hearing Peter Gabriel discussing anything is worthwhile. And he can interpret the song anyway he likes, every cover doesn't need to be exact. Relax and just enjoy it, and if you don't like it you don't have to ever come back.
I never ever thought I'd hear Peter Gabriel playing/singing a Tom Waits tune. But there you have it, and I loved every second. Goes to show the influences and respect between artists that often goes unnoticed.
You can love them both. Both versions are awesome. Both musicians have gorgeous voices and have written stunning, moving music. I'd love to hear Tom doing Don't Give Up with maybe Paula Cole...
Some people can sing ,some people can play ,but very few add that elusive ingredient, heart, .W hen these people sing, part of them comes out of the speakers and settles in your heart ,and without realising you grow a little bit .thank you Mr Gabriel ,and yes I have grown a bit after this ,thanks again . P.s father son makes my eyes leak xxxxx
Mad respect for Peter Gabriel. Not into everything he does, but the ones I love of his are SPOT ON ("We're coming down (The Wall E credits music)") being one of them. This is tops!
My God. His voice with Tom’s words. Send those two out on tour, and it will be Billy Joel, and Elton John, only for people who have a soul, and are aware of it.
Well, the eggs chase the bacon round the fryin' pan And the whinin' dog pigeons by the steeple bell rope And the dogs tipped the garbage pails over last night And there's always construction work bothering you In the neighborhood In the neighborhood In the neighborhood Well, Friday's a funeral and Saturday's a bride Sey's got a pistol on the register side And the goddamn delivery trucks, they make too much noise And we don't get our butter delivered no more In the neighborhood In the neighborhood In the neighborhood Well, Big Mambo's kicking his old greyhound And the kids can't get ice cream 'cause the market burned down And the newspaper sleeping bags blow down the lane And that goddamn flatbed's got me pinned in again In the neighborhood In the neighborhood In the neighborhood
Amazing! I was searching for the original to make a cover of it (I mean play it for my friends after a couple of beers) then I found this, by one of my favorite artists ever! This is just perfect. Now I'm not quite sure I'm going to sing it. Thanks for posting! You may also like: watch?v=uwe_qsngFE0
wonder why he omitted the second verse: Well, Friday's a funeral and Saturday's a bride And Sey's got a pistol on the register side And the goddam delivery trucks, they make too much noise And we don't get our butter delivered no more
I just discovered this by accident because I haven't seen the MTV video in years and years .. I saw in first in 1983 and with like the other crap they played you watch like Beat it ... Then Waits sepia toned video which looked like nothing else nor sounded like anything else... I knew nothing that he even did those wonderful albums in the 1970's Nothing... I was 13 almost new to the world... Yet I just discovered Zappa that year who Herb Cohen also managed Waits .... But the weird part about this ... Was this was it till Bone Machine and with that and Nirvana and some other 1992 things I think Bone Machine came out in 92 or 91 same year as Nevermind ... And both were a mind blower coming from Minni Vanilla Guns and Poses and tons of other bad crap you name it IT WAS CRAP ... I thought for 5 minutes I was seeing hearing something new cool.... Then Kurt died Tom went away till Mule ... And out came the HORRORS of The Spice Girls Hanson Hootie and the blowjobs and freaking the wrecker of them all BRITNEY SPEARS ... Yeah she sure looked cute but everything followed her and male bands were becoming oh pansy ish or something I don't know what they were because I refused to hear it because I knew it was going to disappear into a gigantic music toilet... Meanwhile Waits In The Neighborhood make Michael Jackson Thriller look now like a cut out bin record ... Thriller Bad and then dead career and then dead ...

It's beautiful but mixed up the order of the stanzas and missed one entirely, which isn't really forgivable for a professional musician who claims to appreciate waits lyricism. The last stanza is last for a reason that's important to the whole song
I would say that this is just Peter Gabriel sounding just like Peter Gabriel- singing a song written by Tom Waits,,!,! Peter has a unique vocal style and range- he doesn’t have to sound like anyone else, and he certainly doesn’t sound like Billy Joel !! I suggest you upgrade your listening device...
This works well arranged for piano but his delivery is just not convincing for me. Tom's observations about the downtrodden and overlooked in society are so brilliant because they often walk the line of tragedy and comedy. There's no humour in this rendition at all, it's just sentimental
Many artists can't read music paul. The Beatles for instance. That's why they had George Martin. It is surprising but it's true. Some of the early artists -- like Connie Francis, Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka etc...they could read music.
Yeah? Well, apparently, one of the ways people write songs is to steal them from somebody else. I sent you ‘Red Red Rain’ six months before you released ‘Red Rain’ with the same chorus, same words, same chords, same key. LMFAO
Gabriel covering Wait's , this is heaven
Indeed my friend!
Amen!
Peter Gabriel playing one of my favourite Tom Waits' songs. Absolutely great!
Peter Gabriel, like all true artists, knows and appreciates that all good music connects with our emotions. Tom Waits knows this too. Both are geniuses in my book.
You said what I was trying to say......👍

“I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things.”
― Tom Waits
...me too, God Bless Us All
Usually the only one I want to sing a Tom Waits song is Tom Waits, but this is good.
I think Peter Gabriel and Tom Waits have a lot Of Fans In Common. Definitely 2 of My All time Favorites.
I've always really liked "In The Neighborhood" I'm glad to be in such distinguished company with Peter Gabriel on this opinion.
The back of his chair is comically delightful

Peter did amazing job on this cover. Tom Waits is the upper echelon of songwriters. Bow down.Americana all day.
Just beautiful, my favourite singer singing my favourite songwriter's song. Wow.
It doesn't come any better than this......Two icons coming together. Wonderful.....👍
How can yout love Tom Waits and Peter Gabriel.
Tom Waits is the best artist . . Any genre any time. In my book at least.
this explain how special Tom is ,Peter is inspired by another level.
A slice of life in the old hood, really paints a picture doesn't it. Nod to Peters beautiful rendition and to Toms lovely song. Cheers.
Sounded exactly like I expected it to. Great.
Wow! Just wow.
I literally cannot believe this exists. Holy fuck.
Mr. Gabriel, thank you, you're something, we don't know what, but you're something.
PG has one of the best voices around
Holy crap. This made my night. I have never, ever heard this song like this!
One of my favourite songs, interpreted by one of my favourite artists....this is win-win.
Thank you Mr Gabriel, that's respect to such a song, thx
Full of heart and soul as always Peter.

Splendid!
THANKS PETER, for this amazing cover !!
Holy moly, this made me cry.
Um genio interpretando outro genio.
It took me 5 years to see it, but this is fantastic. One of my earliest musical idols covering another... And so well.
It took me 11…
@@WatchfulEyeArt And almost 12 for me.
Interessant Peter Gabriels Stimme für dieses Lied. Zwei der größten Musiker, Waits und Gabriel (IMHO) der letzten Jahre...
Come for the song - Stay for the emotion - Thanks for posting ( thumbs up from me )
I've always loved both of their music. This is awesome!
Brilliant,love Tom and Peter, s music 🎶🎶,

Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle sent me here.
Love Mr Gabrels stuff, but this song works best as a bar room bawl to me.
Ni Peter Gabriel se salva de los hinchabolas. Está acomodándose para tocar el piano y le suena el teléfono. Como es un tipo piola, en vez de putear como haría uno, disimula yendo a buscar un almohadón. Excellent cover ... despite playing on a horrible chair
This kids can't get ice cream 'cos the market burned down
IT IS FUCKIN BRYAN PERNE!!!!
I love Peter Gabriel but I don't think you would ever find him in a Tom Waits neighborhood.
Surprised this black and white content seems to load so slow....
1:45 music begins at 1:45
inspired by Brian Pern.
It's beautiful but mixed up the order of the stanzas and missed one entirely, which isn't really forgivable for a professional musician who claims to appreciate waits lyricism. The last stanza is last for a reason that's important to the whole song
Non si puo togliere a tom quello che e' di tom
Full respect -but why is he trying to sound like Billy Joel?-thats a west coast accent.Tom's from Illinois.
Wrong. Tom Waits is from Chula Vista, California
he is English.
I would say that this is just Peter Gabriel sounding just like Peter Gabriel- singing a song written by Tom Waits,,!,! I don't see this really as lecturing. The way I see it he likes Tom Waits'music jus like you do, He is only better than you I guess

this sounds sterile compared to waits.
Yeah? Well, apparently, one of the ways people write songs is to steal them from somebody else. I sent you ‘Red Red Rain’ six months before you released ‘Red Rain’ with the same chorus, same words, same chords, same key. LMFAO
