Revenge of the Sith 4 Hour Supercut - Every Change and Transition

  • This video shows the exact nature of all changes, transitions, and deleted scenes restored in the full 4K HDR 4.5 hour Revenge of the Sith - Siege of Mandalore Supercut I have created, with text explanations summarizing details for each of these changes. The new crawl, transitions, audio, visual, and deleted scenes are all here in this most up to date version of this epic Star Wars Supercut.
    The Following Footage is included in this Fan Edit:
    - All of Revenge of the Sith film, save a very small number of shots.
    - A Brand new Rewritten Opening Crawl for the Supercut
    - 21 Minutes of the 2k3 Clone Wars Battle of Coruscant, recut to fit within the timeline and enhanced in with a new 4K HDR transfer.
    - All 4 Episodes of the Siege of Mandalore Clone Wars Season 7 finale arc, recut seamlessly into the events of Revenge of the Sith in roughly chronological order.
    - 5 Restored Deleted Scenes (and one new partially restored scene) - Newly AI Upscaled and Improved over the previous releases, just like the Episode I and II Extended Cuts
    - The Restored 20th Century Fox Opening, matching the versions used in my other cuts.
    The Total Runtime for the Cut is 4 Hours, 19 Minutes and 10 seconds.
    I will not be doing a version without the 2K3 series, or a version of ROTS Extended with only Deleted Scenes. There are other editors who have tackled those projects over the years. I have good reasons to include the footage I have chosen, as has been described in the previous ROTS release videos.
    Footage from Bad Batch, Jedi Fallen Order, Kenobi, and Book of Boba are not included. I stand by my statements that they work much better in their respective original titles, especially since the Bad Batch Order 66 events are meant to be seen from their rather unique POV. I have also decided to keep the TCW final scene in its current placement. No Post Credits Scene in a Skywalker Saga film.
    docs.google.com/document/d/1o...
    Use the following Google Doc to see the supercut for yourself, then follow the instructions there.
    Note: Due to changes in Contend ID, to prevent the video from being blocked, small portions of it had to be silenced. This does not reflect the actual film edit's audio, and I tried to preserve as much of it here as I could.

    This is amazing but I would make just 3 alterations to make it truly perfect
    1: add the scene from 2D Clone Wars where Grievous and Dooku are practicing and Sidious Hologram walks in and he tells Grievous to execute his part in their plan, this scene can be easily slotted in-between when Anakin is called by Yularan to return to the capital ship and the scene where the shuttle is is flying to the ship, this scene gives us a better introduction to Grievous Dooku and Sidious before they appear later and makes Dooku's death even more shocking as this scene would lead you to believe that just as he was a main villain throughout the Clone wars TV Series, He would be here as well
    2: the scene where Ahsoka buries the clones and drops her lightsaber should be just after Obi-Wan and Padmè leave Mustafar and when When Sidious arrives to rescue Anakin from the Lava, this makes the scene much more emotional and symbolizes the end of the clone wars, coming right after Darth Vader's defeat shows just how bad things have become, the scene just feels very out of place in it's current position in your cut,
    3: the transition (mainly the music) between the last two scenes is the opposite of smooth, it should fade out into a black screen before fading back into the final scene with Darth Vader

      I also feel like the Mace crushing Greviou's chest and giving him the cough makes sense to keep in here. Maybe not for canon reasons, but narratively it works better. Because other wise, the next time we see Grevious after his escape from Courscant, he is staggering, coughing and limping. Where as before, in the Genndy Clone Wars footage, he was a god damn beast, tanking multiple Jedi at once. Everything else though really works and this has become my diffinitive version of Episode 3. Thanks bro. Keep up the awesome work.

    Literally had the same idea too, I agree 100% that a super cut would only include the 2D Clone Wars, The 4 part finale of Clone Wars, and Sith. Not the Bad Batch simply because that would mean you’re introducing new characters more than halfway through the film. Not gonna lie the cuts here are almost identical to the ones I make when I watch it this way, definitely the best way to watch the film!

    • @MechaSalesman
      @MechaSalesman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Glad you agree with my philosophy. I know several other people have debated how to do this, but I stand by my choices as the best way to tell this story. Edits of Bad Batch material can come later when the show/season is wrapped, but for now I've found the best viewing experience is watching the Season 7 Bad Batch arc before this cut (and maybe a bit more of the micro-series battle of Nelvaan, but that's more optional), this cut, then Bad Batch Episode 1 after it. It really does flow very well when watched that way, and you feel like you're getting the most complete experience.

    I still argue that if you were to add a few Battlefront II coughs during the Coruscant abduction, you could keep the "Windu crushes Grievous" scene and even use it to imply why Grievous is such a worse fighter in the later Utapau battle, as well as why his cough seems so much worse after the battle of Coruscant in comparison to the rest of the Clone Wars. Like, he already has the cough, but Windu crushing his chest makes it 10x worse, giving him an even more wheezing and hacking cough, and restricting his combat capabilities.

    This is an amazing edit! Done really well and tells a massive story that works together, I love it!
    I would probably change a couple things though:
    1. I feel like the film should open with the Fox fanfare, as the edits of Episodes I, II, and IV retain it. Idk, just my thoughts.
    2. I would probably make the final Clone Wars scene a credits scene, even if no other Star Wars movie had a credits scene. (Episode I had Vader's breathing as a small audio bit at the end of the credits, but that's not completely the same). I like the ending of the film being Leia going to the Organa's and Luke being handed to Owen and Beru, it caps things off nicely for A New Hope. Maybe it could go after Episode III's credits are finished, and then have the music-less Clone Wars credits after, get the best of both worlds maybe.
    Either way, these are nitpicks at best, I love this edit otherwise, so excellent job!

To me the deleted scenes appears to have none of the typical "painterly" defects you get from AI enhancers where the AI just doesn't know what to do with certain things - eyes in particular often turn into a blurry mess and that's going to stand out even from a distance. Premiere does NOT like files already encoded in x265. They are meant for viewing, not editing. Handbrake is the best thing to convert it with, but there may be a simpler solution for your problem. What type of device are you trying to play these files on?

Unless your device is very old (more than 5 years), or locks out certain kind of software (like say, a work laptop with major restrictions) it should have no problem playing a 1080p HEVC encoded MKV file. While VLC alone should work, updating your codecs will likely make it work much better. Personally, I both prefer and normally use the combo of updated codecs, Media Player Classic, and the MadVR addon if I am playing the 4K HDR files.
      "How are these files encoded, and what video player should I use to watch them?
      All video files encoded in x265 for best quality and compression. Please download K-Lite Codec Pack (codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_standard.htm) and play on Media Player Classic or VLC (www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html) on PC, IOS 11 with VLC on IOS, VLC player on Android, and VLC with up to date Codecs and OS on MacOS. If you are watching 4K HDR on Windows, you may also want to INSTALL THE MAD-VR ADDON (madvr.com/) FOR PROPER HDR PLAYBACK WITH Media Player Classic ON HDR CAPABLE MONITORS. Most Smart TVs, phones, and tablets will play the 4K HDR versions correctly with just VLC as long as their software is up to date."

    40 minutes in and I'm loving it so far, although I do wish that Mace Windu choking Grievous had been left in, if for no other reason than it being so badass. I also had thought you might imply that Shaak Ti had been captured as well and use the deleted scene on Grievous's ship where she's killed. I know this sort of breaks a few things because they would now meet Grievous twice (and the "shorter than I expected" line wouldn't quite make sense) but I think it could work pretty well.

    • @MechaSalesman
      @MechaSalesman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This type of cut is tricky to do because I am trying to preserve as much of the microseries as possible while fixing only the parts that most overtly contradict other onscreen canon. It requires some tough decisions on what to stay, and what goes, and the context for the material released around the time of Revenge of the Sith needs to be taken into account too.
      1. The chest crushing scene was written as a last second retcon that was never intended to be in the series earlier drafts in the first place. It was one of the last bits added to the show, and was only created to explain an inconsistency that was later retconned away anyway. Because I already changed Grievous' voice in this cut, and because his cough already existed in prior resources, it removes the need for it, even if I do think the scene is cool/badass. The intent is to create a bit more internal consistency for "new" viewers even if old "fans" may be disappointed.
      2. The same can be said for the many confusing deaths of Shaak Ti. The problem with Shaak Ti's many deaths is that it's been stated in all other sources (both EU and Canon) that her death happens later, and her death at Grievous' hand scene wasn't even in the original script. It was yet another incomplete retcon that was added late, then removed anyway. Our only benefit from it is that it's the most complete looking scene visually, but that's about it. Plus the problem with deleted scene as a whole is that it has very noticeably incomplete VFX, far more so than the other scenes I've included.
      Officially, she dies at Anakin's hands and that's where I'm leaving it for now. Restoring the Temple death entirely would require a fully new scene to be filmed (maybe in Kenobi?). So until that happens, this is what we've got and this is where I'm leaving it.

      @@MechaSalesman Thanks for the detailed response! When I was growing up watching the Clone Wars (1st season came out when I was in 6th grade for reference), I had actually assumed that Grievous' cough had been mistakenly put into the Clone Wars because the writers were somehow unaware of the Mace Windu scene from the miniseries. I guess I wasn't aware that that was actually a last minute addition to the miniseries like you've said.
      I did always find it interesting that some of the set design from Shaak Ti's death scene actually made its way into the Lego Star Wars level. (Specifically the circular tubes they crawl though and seal off at one end.) And that of course was more fleshed out in the Revenge Of The Sith PS2 game.
      As a side note it would be kind of funny to have a joke edit with every Shaak Ti death included (although one is from The Force Awakens though so that's definitely a stretch)

Right at the very end, when they first show Leia with Bail and Breha, and then Luke with Owen and Beru, Luke's theme plays in front of the binary sunset, I'm sitting there with tears in my eyes as the credits are about to roll and the music is about to crescendo... BUT NO we have to cut to an incredibly jarring and unnecessary scene with Vader on what I think is Hoth? It just doesn't belong there at all and completely ruins the emotional moment of seeing Luke with his family. It should 100% be a post-credits scene, it does not work where it's at right now

    • @MechaSalesman
      @MechaSalesman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I addressed that bit during Rex's order 66 sequence in this video, but to summarize.
      I've tried, but as it is right now when I insert it in, it feels out of place and doesn't allow either the full sequence to play out naturally, disrupts the Order 66 John Williams sequence as it is too much, or takes too much footage away from a viewer who will watch the Bad Batch cut immediately after they see this one.
      It is my honest view that the best viewing experience is watching the Season 7 Bad Batch arc before this (as it is the last arc before Siege of Mandalore Chronologically. It actually happens after the Martez sister arc), then seeing this cut, then seeing Bad Batch Episode 1 right after. That's how I did my own viewing order when bad Batch episode 1 hit, and that still remains the best experience I've had so far.
      I'm not saying I'll never do it, but I haven't found a way yet that honestly makes the entire experience satisfying. Fallen Order has a similar problem due to how long its own Order 66 mission actually lasts.

    • @MechaSalesman
      @MechaSalesman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The thing is, I want this to be a version of the film that you can watch in a marathon with other content. It doesn't have to be for first time viewers, but I'd like it to be a staple for long time fans who watch the TV continuity and movies together. Whether you watch my Clone Wars edits or not, I want this to be an option people can use as both a finale to TCW, and as a prologue to Bad Batch, and it turns out the latter works better if you watch it after without the ends.
      Furthermore, as I've said, breaking up that specific part of the film in a satisfying way just isn't ideal. I could sacrifice a few shots of the Oder 66 montage that exists, but you'd lose something else equally emotional only to add a reduced version of another scene from elsewhere. The shots of Yoda and Padme reacting are the easiest to sacrifice (epsecially the latter), but they are core characters in the film, and I'd be replacing their reactions to these events with shots of characters we've either never seen before or barely know. From a storytelling POV it doesn't actually work out all that well. Then, when a viewer goes and watches Bad Batch right after, they see the same scene all over again, something Star Wars never does (it never recycles footage like that).
      As excessive as this massive cut seems to be on the surface, the film isn't meant to be a youtube nostalgia tribute like my other AMV work would be. It's meant to be an epic Star Wars tale that concludes the Clone Wars era for all the fans who have emotionally invested into the TV show for 13+ years. Each bit of material I've added into it adds to that point: the recut 2k3 series footage expands the scope of the Battle of Coruscant, makes Grievous a bigger threat, shows the Jedi at their peak heroic abilities, and raises the stakes of the war by showing it's impact directly on the capitol, all while doing so because the writers explicitly endorsed/referenced it when they could've more easily overwritten it. The Siege of Mandalore footage itself ties the TCW seires directly into the film and greatly expands upon Sidious' plan from Maul's perspective, as well as Order 66 from the view of the clones, and finally makes Ahsoka a main character in line with Anakin/Kenobi, as TCW argued she should be. The deleted scenes add essential political context back into the film that make far more sense to watch after a viewer has already invested into the Clone Wars series, not to mention line the film closer to its brilliant novelization, which George himself still endorsed and oversaw.

    Good work, I personally didn't want to be the one to make this because the audio mixing seems way too daunting to even attempt. It's hard to make that sound good.
    Here's a tip though, if you're trying to fade out a soundtrack, instead of just keyframing the audio down, cut it and use reverb to have it naturally fade itself out. This works much better than just lowering the dB into the ground.

    • @MechaSalesman
      @MechaSalesman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've used these techniques many times over the years, and on several videos directly in this channel, even.
      Unfortunately the source material I have to work with has serious limitations (I don't have the master tapes, of course) that made doing this way harder than you might think. I've actually experimented a lot with timings and tweaks to arrive at the current results. Many scenes cut off audio too quickly to easily edit even with advance techniques. Reverb doesn't always work perfectly because it can inappropriately amplify the original source and make it sound off, not always sounding as pleasant when it transitions over as you'd expect. Each attempt to alter it has a tradeoff.
      I also deliberately do now want to rescore the film, however. Preserving the original score as much as possible is a major intent. The only exception being the opening act where I reconstructed the audio from scratch to replace the Tom Kane narration, or scenes that had no music where I added a more subtle cue.
      Also, to be honest, many people know the original film's audio cues so well that almost any change to it will stick out like a sore thumb. That is the other challenge that comes with a project like this.
      Either way, I'm glad you're enjoying the work that's gone into this.

    I really liked this edit a lot, and having just sat through it- It definitely works. Though I think a few tune ups would be needed in order for it to properly stand out as it's own unique edit.
    but I was a little bit frustrated by how many fade transitions were used toward the end of the edit. I think you overdid it with them, which isn't a bad thing- it just throws off some of the moods in the final sequence. I think circular transitions or classic lucas style wipes would've been more suitable, for example- When Ahsoka's burial fades to Padme's funeral- with an audio touch up and a circular transition or wipe, it would fit in more casually with the other scenes of the tribute. With a fadeout being present, and with as many as their ARE in this fanedit, they start to become jarring when placed along scenes that use circular wipes or slide transitions.
    Regarding the final Vader scene used as the final scene. I disagree with the statement that it shouldn't be an after-credits scene. When watching this all the way through, the Tatooine scene and it's musical build up suddenly fading with a transition, into Vader's recovery of Ahsoka's sabers, is suddenly very jarring and kind of decompresses the emotional weight of the final scene of ROTS, especially when the death star scene works as a perfect emotional send off to Anakin and Sidious' stories. It works better as a post credits scene because it gives the viewer a moment to breathe before giving them one last punch to the emotional feels. You could also make it a MID-Credit scene by having ROTS' credits between the Tattooine scene and have the TCW credits play after that scene.
    All and all, this was a really great edit, and the work you put into it was absolutely phenomenal.

    Really good work, but I really feel that the transition from 3PO to the burial is too abrupt. The sound doesn't fade in properly. The final transition also holds too long to the sunset. The music is starting to crescendo to the credits and suddenly stops to go to the final Vader scene.
    At 4h10m and 39-40 seconds there's a lull in the score where you could fade in the TCW music to take us to the next scene more naturally I feel.
    This is a massive endeavour and an editing nightmare I'm sure. Having to combine all of these scenes in a way that fits and at a rewarding pace. You should be proud.

I would've used a different composition of the binary theme playing over the sunset since it's not the end scene to close the film out this time around, you don't need the crescendo. With a little more time it's easy enough to put together since there's hardly any sound effects and zero dialogue. A different score, some light foley and you're good to go.
      All in all I absolutely loved this extended experience of ROTS, especially since I'm one of those fans who gave up on Clone Wars a couple of episodes in.

    I really hope Disney puts out a new edtion of Revenge Of The Sith that has the last four episodes of The Clone Wars put into the movie, call it "Star Wars Episode 3 Revenge Of The Sith, The Ashoka cut. Kinda like with the Rouge cut of X-men Days Of Future Past.

    I hope that star wars rebels season five will be 6 hours of Empire strikes back and 5 hours of return of Jedi because we will see that Ezra and Ahsoka help Anakin to reunite with Luke and Leia and they fight against Thrawn on Naboo

      Considering that the Siege of Mandalore draft was first written before the buyout, there's no reason you couldn't.
      This edit attempts to build harmony between the inconsistencies in Legends and TCW that were there even before the buyout anyway.

    tbh clone wars 2003 can 100 percent be canon all they need to do is say ventress survived the fall against anakin and also just pretend grievous wasnt talking normal cuz obv that contradicts 2008 clone wars.
    Also the anakin and obiwan mission on that one planet with the blue people would have to be sometime in between the Echo/ bad batch arc and the finale clone wars arc, so maybe during the ahsoka arc. But then the line before where kenobi says to cody "weve been here a month already" would have to take place before the echo arc which makes things confusing.

    The siege of mandalore should start after anakin reunited with padme. There the times match perfectly.

    The only problem I have with this cut is that it's implied Rex and Ahsoka's conversation happens after Anakin swears allegiance to Sidious. Order 66 is the "briefing" that Rex goes to listen to. I don't know if it would have been any better for the narrative to stick to the chronology in that part, but I'm not an editor.

    • @MechaSalesman
      @MechaSalesman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In Siege of Mandalore, there is a hard cut to Maul before scenes from Anakin's turn are heard. It's completely ambiguous just how much time passes during this "briefing", and military briefings can last anywhere from minutes to an hour. Sidious telling them to execute Order 66 is not necessarily the entire briefing, so I expect the briefing started with actual news on the war before Sidious called the army with his order.
      It was also a creative decision to intersect Maul and Ahsoka's reaction with Anakin's actual turn. It's a particular set of edits I felt strongly about doing in this specific way, and I think it remains one of the cut's strong points.
      Might it stretch suspension of disbelief a bit for some viewers? Sure. But a lot of Star Wars storytelling has ambiguous timetables like that. No one ever even has a straight answer on how long it takes ships to travel across hyperspace from point A to Point B, for example, and this is a far less of a problem than that.
