    New entry: Oxford English Dictionary phrasing - "Strap Button Fuckery" = to drill a hole in an attempt to attach a strap to any form of stringed musical instrument. To destroy valuable property. To ignore an engineered design in preference of a new, inefficient design.
    I'm sure there are more definitions....

    I've owned dozens of guitars and I've stripped a bridge screw only once from intonating when it was under tension. It was a mastery bridge for my 61 jazzmaster.

    A very nice bass though I'd be tempted to put an original bridge back on it.

    What an awesome sounding bass. Even sounded great through the little noise maker, can't imagine what it sounds like through a big rig. Great video. What a pain it would be to have to loosen the string every time you adjusted the bridge saddles.

    Are those threaded inserts for the ashtray cover?. Never seen anybody do that before. Whoever drilled the hole in the neck plate must have some serious drill bits. Chrome plating is something like RC 72. The icing on the cake would have been the rare paddle tuners.

    Good job. Maybe the shim wouldnt be neccessary if the original bridge type was put back ? Shaller roller bridges have fat bottom and low action sometimes cant be achieved. Same thing I noticed in badass bridges.

  • @JOHNOBUB
    @JOHNOBUB 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    looks a lot better after the cleanup / fret polishing. what did you end up doing with the oversize potentiometer and the foam situation? Is that a Schaller bridge?

  • @whamni
    @whamni 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My 79' Musicman Stingray has a hole in the neck plate for adjusting the angle of the neck (instead of a shim).
    I was waiting to see a stud in the neck when you took it off the body, but no stud, so the question is, is this the original neck, or maybe not the original neck plate, or, as you said "someone drilled a hole", if it's the latter, why would they have drilled a hole Dave ?
    Great video Dave, even though it took me four years to find it lol . cheers

    A quick casual question:
    Those Chromes are really high tension strings; as a vintage '69, if this bass had the stock truss rod, would there be any concern over the neck's ability to cope well over time?

He was this calm, cool, collected type… if you were messing something up he'd tell you about it straight up without any P.C. crap… didn't get upset… salt of the earth, reasonable… just went with the flow of life and lightened up the joint with some dry humor.

    If anyone has some wisdom to share, I have a 30 inch scale length bass with .40-.90 gauge strings. I want to try to get string tension to match that of a 34 inch scale bass since I'm forced to play lightly on it...

      @shoominati23 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @maxm4824
      @maxm4824 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +shoominati23 that's cool, I made the mistake of getting a short scale when I can handle a long scale fine

    • @shoominati23
      @shoominati23 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I haven't actually tried the bass yet, as they only deal direct. But I just thought it was cool having a scale between what's considered 'short scale' and standard scale.
      Short scale's have a more 'zingy' sound / trebely sound as there is less tension on the strings don't they?

    • @maxm4824
      @maxm4824 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +shoominati23 I can't really say, if you get a short scale in the same room as a long scale, try it, but I don't think it effects anything too much.

    Should I upgrade my intermediate guitars or save and buy a brand new american strat?

    • @XLBiker13
      @XLBiker13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mark Lucio Doesn't have to be brand new but ditch the intermediate guitars and buy a really good American Strat. I bought (and recommend) a Fender AVRI 65 Strat off of Reverb that still had the plastic on the pickguard for $1400. Not a scratch on it. Saved about a grand and I LOVE that guitar.

    • @mark5126
      @mark5126 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +XLBiker13 I'm probably going to buy an american strat, my heart won't be fulfilled until I do. I do love the vintage style more than modern. The only problem is that fender came out with the elite in that cool blue burst, and it seems like something that could become collectable because it's the first year. Seems like a good investment opportunity. So, if I go american i'm probably going to get the elite.

    • @mark5126
      @mark5126 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MomoTheBellyDancer Do you have any expensive guitars?

    • @XLBiker13
      @XLBiker13 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Lucio I agree, if you're spending the money you have to follow your heart. I currently own about 10 guitars ranging in value from vintage (immaculate '65 Strat and '63 Jazzmaster) to Gibson and Fender custom shop guitars down to MIJ and MIM Fenders. I love them all and play them all but in my experience you always get what you pay for. Whenever I've spent more money it was well worth the extra money. You definitely don't have to break the bank to buy a good guitar but if you spend the extra money and know what to buy its always worth it.

    • @mark5126
      @mark5126 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    The damage to the pickguard is not unusual. Back in the day there were no guitar setting up books, no Dave on TH-cam, nothing supplied by Fender and no real experts around. So how do you adjust it?. Surely not by taking the neck off, that would be silly, wouldn't it.

    Sir if i could ask you a question about my bass neck. I wanted it to have a low action but when i adjusted the trust rod on the neck, it seems that there’s no more room to adjust it. There is a bit of bow that i’m hoping i could Atleast make the neck straight but the turn for the nut might have reached all the way in. What needs to be done for this bass sir? Or is there a problem with my tryst rod . The bass only experienced 2 times of adjustment since i got the bass. It’s a fender 64 jazz bass Custom shop. 10 years old.
