Just watching this again, best laugh this morning, to play this you'd have to hands like Chewbacca. Musicians understand the humour cause we are dreamers and like sci fi, but I lost a mouthful of my morning coffee with an uncontrollable laugh.
Hahahaaa ... "Son of a sea cook" flashback to my brother in the RCAF 1967. Thanks Dave Merry Christmas!
I have two of these and still want that one. Looks beautiful
I have been consistently amazed at the action on the basses of most bass players I've played with. I've seen a few I'd almost swear you could park a car under the strings, lol.
Beautiful bass, and good work.
Don't know if you've thought of or tried this, but on a few stripped bridge height adjustment screws, I've had good luck using a mini screwdriver that fits into it tightly. The flat lands on the head of the screwdriver will grab the corners atthe bottom of the allen hole and allow you to turn it, with lubrication and the string tension backed off, of course. I see you got it squared away, regardless.
You, too!
I play with middle-high action. Just like the way it informs my note choice, and it makes me keep my technique in check.
5/64ths is about 2mm for the metrically inclined
Hey glad to see you finally found a use for the P/up height hooks I sent you! At least you didn't use them to pick ya nooose like you first suggested... ha ha :)
Onya Cobba
Can you make me a set? Do you sell them?
Love watching these videos, glad I found your channel
I hade my Geddy Lee Japan Jazz Bass set up at Bass Central 3 years ago. By this guy nick named Grass Hopper. He said he was Geddy Lees Bass Tech in part of the 1980’s. I have to say after playing it. And the USA Geddy Lee Bass. The USA is only Slightly easier to play.
But it worth more.
i use cut off strings as a nut slot burnisher in other words after a nut file has done its worst i run a wound string cut off back and forth in the groove to mimic a string settling in and as its a wound string it rounds any angular cuts off.
Love your videos Dave. and congrats on your new Grandniece....Thanks!
Love the 72 jazz ,looks amazing, keep the tuners on Dave make um work................
Congrats on the new addition to your family. You gave me an idea. Instead of buying a hex key set that are colored to indicate they are metric I think I’ll put some paint or colored tape on mine.
good idea!
This vid earned you a(nother) Patreon. Keep it up as I love what you do! (scurries off to set his pickup height...)
That Bass is beautiful.
Congrats to your family !!! Merry Christmas !!!
Loooove the Peterson when it sings.
I really like the shade of white on the body of this bass, perhaps Olympic White? Very nice.
Do I have to buy a Geddy Lee USA made Jazz Bass. To get the play ability of my Japan Model Geddy Lee Jazz Bass?
Merry Christmas to you and your family sir.
I love that color on a Fender. OH YEAH
Congratulations on your Great-niece!!!
Dave's already got the short-neck P-Bass picked out for her. Baby's are such a blessing Dave. Congratulations.
I have a 2011 USA jazz and just had the first pro set up recently, had the same problem with the height adjustment setscrews, thought they were stripped but just goop or something in there....
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Dave!
I was going to send you a sparkly Christmas card but since you don't like them I'll send a box full of packing peanuts instead.
Merry Christmas Dave....LOL.
I got this guitar for my Church and I gotta say I wish I can keep it for myself.
I have that same bridge on my j bass. I recently put all the strings in the middle slot. How do you usually set string spacing on that bridge?
congrats on the grand niece! !
isn't a "set" pickup height kind've pointless? Playing it by ear and getting it as far away as you can while preserving tone seems to be simpler and better. Only reason I mention this is because some factory lists aren't right for some of my guitars, they pull on the strings and cause tuning issues at factory height etc
Love your videos Dave, you don't seem to do demos much anymore, any reason why? I always liked watching you demo basses.
Cool bass!
Dave, 5/64" to 6/64" translates to "by a hair less then" 2 mm to 2.4 mm - well actually it is around two hairs, given that a hair has a diameter of around 0.07 mm. Thanks for what you are doing, Norbert
I am watching from London England. I love the vids man!
whats the difference between the j bass and the p bass? I can see the pickups are placed differently on each.
Dave, looking to add a bass guitar to my home studio & knowing that your an accomplished player, what might you recommend that would produce clean and accurate signals for recording? Keep in mind that I’d rather not have to refinance the residence to pull this off and looks alone aren’t of any significance, Thanks much, Tom
How much tolerance do you allow on the intonation or do you always make it exact?
good video
a thou is very small, 1000=64/64 500=32/64 250=16/64[1/4] 125=8/64[1/8] 93.75 thou=6/64? just wondering about using the feeler gauge to check string height? such care an attention Dave! You got the patience of Job
That A and D string spacing still looks wide from here in California.
Wow that 70's heartbreaker looks like it's ready to put up a good ole fite wit choo man !
I'd love to see them tuners renovated but in reality we know that's not gonna happen, probly nearly 50 years old ! The frets, ooooohh, that's a tough call, there's not very much left to crown ! There's the question of the neck straightness and the truss rod, oh dear, a 50 year old truss rod ! I'll also bet there's gonna be fun and games with the electronics and probly even the bridge too ! Also I'd be very surprised if the scratch plate wasn't a gooch-fest and has a mis-matched set of screws that have been attacked with a can opener !
Sounds like a long winter project to me !
The inlay on the fretboard looks beautiful. But I'll give you Las Vegas odds that there's a whole festival amateur wiring under the pick guard.
Hi Dave, building a bass with potentially jazz type pickups can you say how far the centres of pickups are on a 34 in scale jazz bass are from the bridge to give me a ballpark, anyone. Gd
Hi Dave, Greetings from México, so i'm getting a new American Elite J-Bass, i was wondering of you could tell me what do you think about this new J-Bass Gen? Merry Christmas and Congrats btw!
Is there any harm in using the string height ruler to measure pickup height as it's magnetic?
The schmutz is proteins. And a loaf of bread for dipping.
I bought a used Squier Affinity p bass for a hunnerd bucks. First bass was a new MIM J. Wife got it for me Christmas 2006. What a gal but the bass neck is a total POS. The neck wood grain sucked so bad it turned into a propeller. I busted it trying to straighten. Yeah the Squier is a pos too but@ $100 whats not to like. I'm learning how to work on it thanks to your videos.
Hi man !!! A question, have a doubt, how much relief should I leave on my neck? i have jazz bass american standard 2009
Hi Dave, great video, love the nut action part as this is the area I still struggle with. I have a question about the nut action on a 5 string ESP LTD bass with .045-.125" strings. nut action seem to be really out for me. before I start writing about the measurements I would want to ask you what 1st fret/nut action would you consider appropriate. At the moment it seems way to high at approx 0.040" on bass side. on treble side on the other hand I can't fit in 0.012"gauge.
thanks.
Great video and Greetings from Jax, Fl. I installed a Leo Quan BadAss bridge on a 97 Jazz Bass, will this affect the setup seeing as the bridge is a little more high mass than the original?
Dave, do you ever boil old bass strings with a soupçon of vinegar to get rid of schmutz. Or do you just buy new strings. ?
no
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff No new strings ay !. Just a boil Ha ha . Thanks for your channel.
Mazel Tov, Dave :)
Always with the sillymeter hate. ;) It does work the other way around too you know. Being used to meters, centimeters, and millimeters, an inch doesn't make any sense to me. 1 cm is 2,54 inches or 1 mm = 0,03937 inches. Whats up with that? :D
P.S. I'm a long time fan, and it just brings a big fat smile to my face when you gripe about imperial/metric conversions. Happy Christmas from Finland.
The gooch of 2016 looks like a diamond in the rough worth your efforts. Beautiful fretboard needs to be saved. Are the electronics gooched?
If you're looking for a gooch that will test your patience I have a Yammy BB200 high school special that will make you drink flavoured vodka until you see stars...
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
Dave's World of Fun Stuff now that made me fuckin laugh sadly for my leg i was holding a fresh cup of hot java ah well testicle skin does heal.........doesnt it 😳
Question , do you stretch bass strings as on a six string guitar ?
Dave, I wish you were my dad.
It's hard to beat a USA Fender bass.
I never realized you have to finger the string on the last fret before you measure the pickup height....every day is a school day.
Hey Dave, what sizes of shirts do you have left?
Thanks!
I like 5/64 too.
You got your Led Zep head on today then.....
Get those fingers going .....Play Iron Maiden "the trooper"
Hallo master.... Maaf saya mau tanya kalau pickups fender jazz bass yang bagus merk apa? Terimakasih
Wow Weeeeee The heartbreaker is a REAL Heartbroken'er.....
made me weep :(
Why does everyone like the string through option? I hate it , it destroys the strings .
+Dave's World of Fun Stuff , I just realised that as I have a cort evlz4b with the string through and I held a note and thought " geese the sustain on this is insane haha.
The mere sight of a J neck makes my stomach turn. lol
America come join us in the 20th century and use the Metric system, come on it's fun.
Son of a sea cook! Bawhahahaha..... This is America, oh.... N. America yes, guitar definitely U.S. of EH!, sorry A! Silly meters suck but when in jam hoora! Wow! Lol.... Do what ya gotta do only like a canuck can do...............
Why do Fender charge so much for a very basic bass guitar ,,,,,if it’s just the name,,,,,, then sorry others do it better and cheaper
