    Dave, have to disagree with you. These are how to videos. I have learned soooo much from you over the years. You know what you're doing and share that knowledge. Thank you.

    Geez Louise! I do not ever hope there is any ball-busting. I just get into a zen-like state watching your videos. So on behalf of all of us out here in youtube watcher land, screw all the haters, and for the rest of us, do as Dave tells us - be good to one another!

    • @pendleeldnep
      @pendleeldnep 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree - Years ago in the UK there was a tv program called Gardener's World. It was great - peaceful and relaxing - like 'realtime' weeding between the vegetable rows - for me it was 'zen' - sat noodling without the guitar plugged in.
      What I'm getting to is that the program was ruined by a committee of opinions who worked to change the essence of the peaceful nature.
      Dave - Please don't listen to the 'ball-busting' - just keep doing what you do.

    I think I've watched you do these setups about 50 times now, and I still enjoy watching, so I thank you for that. AND, watching these encourages me to feel like I can do some of this myself. So, I thank you again! p.s. My Dad watches too!

      Yeah, I've heard him play that a few times in these videos...brings me back to my childhood. Hey Dave! Next time you're bored and want to pay homage to DD, play the riff from Street Fight or maybe Blue Turk... You can have "One spastic explosion; two pressure cookers go insane..."

    Thanks for all you do for us. I really enjoy taking care of my son's instruments and watching you has made me even better at it . I am very mechanical and have built several racing engines for alot of different applications. I view instruments as a piece of machinery so it came natural. I don't necessarily go by standards as I set them up for my son's preference but if I were doing it for the public you have to have standards to go by . I can only imagine some of the comments you get from the public and know it's frustrating. I think you do great and I highly enjoy your vids - keep em coming !!!

    Hiya Dave. I Like your philosophy how a guitar/bass owns you. True words.

  • @mbenn8168
    @mbenn8168 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Dave, keep doing videos the way you always have done - If every video showed every step of setup every time, they would all be interminably boring to watch. I like how you always highlight the new 'glitch' and the new ways of fixing things. It's taught me shedloads of 'dirty luthering' that gets away from the standard ways, (DE take note) and gives more weight to the equivalent of 'tweaking it' by ear. Thanks for many happily wasted hours...

  • @4deuce31
    @4deuce31 ปีที่แล้ว

    Musical instruments own us, we dont own them. A truer statement has never been spoken.
    Ive never been mistreated by any of my basses, and there have been a lot. Now there are only 2. Funny how we slave to that master as it calls to us from across the room or country. Truly the only master I am a slave to.

    I have a Fretless 05 Mim Jazz like this with black pg I got on reverb. The previous owner had t-rod replaced, Fender High mass bridge added with new black La Bella tapewounds (do the math). and a cheap hard case i got it for less than 500 usd. I put in seymore duncans with new solderless controls. I set it up myself with Dave's help although PO paid 60 usd at GC. This bass rocks.

    I dream of a genuine Fender Jazz. Been playing my old cheap copy for 20 years, and she is very nice set up properly, but an old friend had the real deal. So classy. Such a versatile Bass too. Even my poor copy has a massive range of tones. Ive played Jazz, Blues, Swing, Rock, Pop, and Metal with my old thumper, and She never let me down or fell short of what was needed. And such a classic icon of design too. Ive had many basses over my 46 years, active and passive rigs, fretless, allsorts, but my mean Green machine was the only one that never ever let me down. Love your channel buddy. Been offline far a good while, but I have a new pc and new online ID, and I am glad to have found your channel again. Keep on truckin Brother!

    Love these videos, Dave. I've been watching them on a regular basis for the past 2 years, and then all the past videos you've done. You've said many many times these are not "how-to" videos, yet I've learned SO much from watching you just work. Just observing. Time and again. Over and over. It's how you learn. Each new guitar or bass is a new time to observe. It's almost like a young intern watching a surgeon perform routine surgeries over and over, so when it comes time to do it yourself, you have the experience to do it and even improvise if need be. Kudos!

    I went along with "that is a beautiful craftsmanship" until I saw "Made in Mexico" on the headstock. Then, as things tend to go with MIM guitars, a problem arose, the tuning machine bushings didn't fit. Having owned several MIM guitars, I have never, not once, found one that didn't have some quality control issue lurking somewhere. My own bass says "Made in San Luis Obispo, California" on the headstock (which sounds Spanish enough), but it has never let me down. It was made back when a Georgia peanut farmer was president of the US, and after all these years, it still does it's job.

    Been watching your vids for years Dave, they have helped me fix some issues easily that would have been harder to accomplish without seeing how you did it. What some fuckwit says about how you set up a guitar or bass really doesn't matter, cause you're the one that does it and get's paid for doing it. I have never thought that you'd send out a shit instrument and not make sure it was as perfectly set up as you can make it. That's why people keep bringing them to you for many years to work on and set up. Cause you're good Bro! Keep it up!

    For this particular instrument, for some of the steps, you could view it as a how to or at least "one way to skin this cat". If you expect something exhaustive and complete for every instrument (including modded & custom axes) you're gonna need several hundred techs/luthiers working around the clock with all the R&D folks to produce something close to complete, then a bunch of update materials for issues that develop & new hardware as it's released.

    Nice one Dave. First time watching, in preparation for setting up weird, deep, 4 string guitar thing… all my guitars have 6, 12 or 11 stings. 11 strings, cause I hate the pesky G, & one less G in my life is a good thing.
    I’ve set up all but the first guitar I ever bought… (blimey, 40 years ago), however I’ve never set up a bass. Mainly because I’ve never owned a bass, but that changed two days ago.
    Knew I’d found the right bass setup man when I saw you using linseed oil on the fretboard. It’s done me proud over the last 40, & I’m sure it’ll still be the business for my remaining 40… (fingers & toes crossed).
    My process is pretty much the same, just different measurements… Dam, those strings are huge.
    I enjoyed watching & got a lot from your presentation.
    Cheers.

    Thank you for doing these videos. I love watching them. One question I always seem to have, is when you are setting string height, are measuring from the top of the string, or the bottom? I am guessing the bottom, but I didn't want to assume. P.S., other than the T-Wrench, what and where do you get your tools to do a complete set-up? Thanks again, you fun to watch.
