    I just bought a lovely Harris Tweed overcoat. It’s a little darker than oatmeal and herringbone tweed with a subtle orange overcheck. It goes just below my knees, the way a proper overcoat should. The arms are just a little long so I’m getting a seamstress to shorten them for me. She does an excellent job. I have a jacket she altered for me and she’s my go-to for alterations.

    Hello from Virginia. Thanks for the info, I don't normally wear a suit, (I'm retired), but I do wear cardigans a lot and I think you are correct that a classic style overcoat pairs well with a sweater and some nice slacks or even a good pair of Chinos will do. Thank you sir for taking your time to help. Keep at it, looking forward to what's next.

    I have 3 from spier and Mackay. 2 tweed and one made of a fine (but heavy) Italian wool fabric. Not Camel hair but very comparable. This in addition to my extensive collection of (modified) military greatcoats and thrifted garments from the golden age of woolen outerwear.

    Good video. I am always on the lookout for quality overcoats in my size. I have relied on two options in the mean time. The first is a vintage Peacoat. Mine is over fifty years old. Made of heavy Melton wool, and I chuckle when the coat check person first hefts it and gauges how heavy it is. For warmth, it is superb. But it is short as overcoats go. And when I am dressing up I find it not quite formal enough. On those occasions (which are fewer and further between during this pandemic) I default to either my khaki or black trench coat, each of which has a liner for warmth during these Michigan winters. They are sartorially okay, but not great. I really crave a Chesterfield, or some other classic knee-length overcoat to use in that role. The chief problem facing me is my budget. I cannot justify the expense of a good quality version of such a garment at this point unless I am able to thrift it. I will keep looking. Thanks again for the video, it has inspired me in my search.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peacoats are a great option for day-to-day smart attire in cooler climates, I recently donated my own example to my Dad, who was in need of a warmer coat for the winter. Keep an eye on ebay for some amazing overcoat bargains (or bricks & mortar shops at the end of the cooler months when the sales begin). I have a nice Jaeger raincoat, which has a great padded liner and it is truly almost as warm as my Crombie overcoat, its a great option until a nice overcoat reveals itself to you (its destiny!)

    Excellent film.
    I acquired an Overcoat early last year; Grey, Harris Tweed. It needed slight alteration to the sleeves which took no time at all.
    Sadly though, I have to date had no occasion to wear it.
    My year was spent in workwear, shorts or running attire.
    Hopefully 2021 will give opportunities.

    I got an overcoat very similar to the one you’re wearing for £39 in a charity shop a week ago. Fits well and looks superb. Only snag is the chest size is the same as my jacket size so I can’t wear a jacket under it. Goes great with a scarf though and I can throw it on when I might previously worn a shapeless fleece. I want one like that burgundy one of yours. Do you know who made it?

    I picked up a Merc overcoat for £10 at a thrift store. It's a real gamechanger, I can now go out when it's cold and not look like a roadman in my old puffer. Best thing is, it's a perfect fit with no need to alter which is very rare. Most coats/jackets that fit my chest/shoulders are too loose around the waist and belly.

    Given the decline in overcoat wearing, Ebay is a good place to look for bargains. element of chance on the fit of course, but that is to a great extent offset by the lower prices. It's sometimes been said that a Tramp of the Great Depression era would by modern standards be better dressed quality wise than most reasonably well earning individuals today. That idea is your friend when buying on the second hand market. :)

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your insightful observations, I really like the thought that a depression-era hobo is better dressed that most modern-era so-called professional. I purchased my Crombie overcoat from ebay for 10% of its original cost (having only been worn on one occasion) - its definitely the way to go for overcoat acquisition options.
