    Bismark of the Military Aviation History channel / bis18marck70 was filming in Switzerland, and asked me if I could get him on the range and teach him to shoot. How could I refuse such a request from a Top Bloke like himself? And it gives me an opportunity to illustrate how I train a novice (although I'm not normally constrained by having to film...)
    Since he'd never shot before, we discussed the four marksmanship principles and started him off at 300m with my 7.62x51 / 308 Win M1 Garand (Beretta-made) from 10:52, then moved him on to a 7.92x57mm Mauser Kar98k for a bit of a shoulder beating from 39:37 and then the Tikka T3x Arctic in 7.62x51 / 308 Win at 57:04 for something modern!

      You know the Irony of all this is I was one of the fellas during the infant stages of TH-cam arguing in favor of US military equipment in comparison to German military equipment, and one of the points I consistently made... was the availability of our equipment, and how it was user friendly to a novice or experienced user.
      M1 Garand vs 98K Mauser
      P-51D Mustang VS ME-109
      M4 Sherman VS Tiger
      One of my arguments always was, we had more of them... we could better equip them to troops, troops (Or pilots) could more easily use them, we had more fuel and or ammunition to run them... and in some instances they were more reliable... making the German forces less readily and effectively equipped for that reason among many.
      Yes a seasoned German soldier with a STG 44 would be very dangerous agents a American with a M.1, but how many seasoned German soldiers were there? how many STG 44s? Yes a seasoned pilot was deadly with a ME-109G-10 Messerschmitt or FW-190D-9 agents a armature pilot with a P-51D Mustang, but what about a P-51 with 150 octane fuel and a pilot who modified his plane for optimized performance who was a crack shot too!? How many 109-G10s did they have? or Dora 9s? not many... and not many skilled pilots to fly them let alone well...
      But the argument was always, Das German engineering, it vas of better quality ja! so it is superior!
      And it's funny how Bloke always makes the statement that people say that the 98K is a "Super accurate lazier beam." well if super accuracy was the deciding factor... we had the 1903 Springfield.... and that rifle didn't get the nickname silent death because it let quiet smelly farts. It was replaced with a superior rifle chambered in the same cartridge that will kill a Elk... but semi automatic with a smooth recoil impulse with sights that are quite precise!

      Then good sir if you are the British type, the Enfield... oh yes... 10 round magazine, fast smooth cock on close action, short compact size, each soldier had one... sights are quite good too!
      The spitfire was easy enough to fly, could run with a 109, turn on a dime, and roll quick enough, and it's legs weren't too short for a interceptor.
      Each soldier could be equipped with one, could easily be made to use or fly them, and they had plenty of eager, patriotic, capable fighting men to use them!

    The "follow through" was not something me and my fellow conscripts were taught. But it actually had no effect on hitting the targets.
    Then again we were taught to shoot the AUG, and most shooters who i have seen on YT who tried an actual FA AUG were not happy about the 2 stages its trigger has (semi and full). But the immediate release of the trigger after it goes bang enabled me to shoot single shots with the MG74 (without using the winter trigger). Was quite a mental effort for me to keep pulling. (not that shooting FA with the Mg wasn't fun, but my reflex was to let go of the trigger after the first shot...)

    I've learned more about how to actually take a shot on this, than I have on watching shooting channels over the last two years. I think it's because its mainly American channels and an American viewer that watches gun channels, has probable already got a gun and already knows how to take a shot. Most of us poor Brits have never even held a gun, much less fired one. I fired three shots from an SMLE 22 short, when I joined the ATC for a couple of weeks, when I was 13. I told them I was 14, they wouldint have let me shoot otherwise. I really need to move to a country that's a bit more fire arm friendly.

    I'd never really heard the breathe 2/3 out thing, rather to fully (or as much is comfortable) exhale. I think the logic for that is that it's a more consistent point of reference than some arbitrary lung capacity. One of the things you should have talked about is "cheek weld" to the stock. He should have fired 3 rounds or so before looking at the target. That way he would have been able to do better with sight adjustment.

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      err, cheek weld is automatic when you look through iron sights like that and have the rifle correctly shouldered...

    • @robbrunk1214
      @robbrunk1214 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I realize that with a bolt action rifle - Cheek to stock weld is more important with a semi-auto. You will find you get better accuracy if you shoot three rounds before you take your cheek off the stock. Just so you know - I do like your channel.

    • @BlokeontheRange
      @BlokeontheRange  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Functionally, An M1 garand stock and sights are essentially identical to a C-stock on an M1903A3. The same considerations with regard to cheek weld apply cos the man-machine interface is identical. In any case, cheek weld is a minor thing that you shouldn't bother a novice with when there's a zillion more important things running through their minds - when I coach I work on a "pyramid of needs" basis, and we work as far up the pyramid as the result on target suggests the shooter can cope with and benefit from to avoid overloading them.
