This video has a correction: the subtitles should say "Schusswaffen [firearms]" not "Schutzwaffen [defensive weapons]". My transcriber and translator was German, but not Swiss German, so it's an understandable mistake! There's unfortunately no way to fix that in-video, but hopefully it still makes sense.

One of my favorite lines I've heard was back in WWII when someone asked a Swiss what would they do if Germany invaded Switzerland. The reply was, "Well, each of us would shoot twice then go home." (The German army was twice the size of Swiss population at the time.)
In america, 85% of our citizen are armed. Our entire country is an army. There 8million people in Switzerland, American has over 400million registered guns lmfao not including all the ghost guns we have.

and the wildlife. idk what kind they got out in switzerland but in upstate ny deer jump out in front of speeding cars all the time. it's like a huge problem here.

We have a similar electronic targeting system at our gun club in Wisconsin. We have a 1000 yd range too.
I know you don't wanna get into the politics of firearm Ownership, but I have to say, I do like the respect you showed everyone involved. Well done.
Personally I love how he openly admits his bias of living in a country without personal ownership of firearms makes him unqualified to debate it with people from other countries. I wish more people on the internet were the same.
In general I think its weird to tell people who live in another country, or on the other side of the planet, how they should live.

Just because my country doesn't have a school shooting problem doesn't mean I or anybody else with a working brain is unqualified to say "That's f*cked up and you should do something other than giving people more guns which just amplifies the problem".
I like how Tom said "about 2 hours from Zurich" as if not every town in Switzerland is at most 2 hours from Zurich.
Lots of cities are 1h or less from Zurich. Basel, Bern, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Winterthur and some more are reachable within 1h.
and some are quite a bit more. such as Geneva or Ticino.
Bruh Geneva is about as far away as you can get from Zurich and it’s only 3 hours away, Switzerland is mini.

@@yungamurai but distance != travel time. Geneva is the second biggest city so obviously there are good connections between it an Zurich. But yes, Switzerland is still very small.
As an American member of The Swiss Rifles of Washington DC, in 2000 I participated in the pent-annual Eidgenössisches Schützenfest in Biere, Switzerland. I remember standing in the lobby of my hotel in Lausanne and observing a number of Swiss men checking in at the front desk. Their full-automatic Sturmgewehr-90 assault rifles were bungee-corded to the outside of their luggage. This Federal Shooting Festival included a large and well-attended parade through Lausanne. Only in Switzerland!
I grew up in Switzerland, 1971-1984, and this puts a wide smile on my face :) (we were used to seeing soldiers , conscripts?, in public transport, with their heavy 7,5mm Sig, while riding to the boyscouts events etc.)

I love to see you pointing a light at responsible gun ownership. A population can be armed and very safe, it all has to do with environment and training. The gun club I'm a member at here in the states opened in 1956, and they've never had a single serious firearm-related incident or accident, and yes, if you attempted to break a safety rule in malice or in ineptitude, you would quickly be shown either the asphalt or the right way to operate. Great video.

I've been at a gun range here in the US where a teenager who had come with two adults turned around (facing the seats) with a loaded gun in hand. The rangemaster walked over and told the adults they were being ejected, and the teen was banned for a year. They protested and he told them "You're responsible for him, he could have killed someone, and you weren't paying enough attention to even notice - you're lucky he's not dead." Mind you, the kid was still holding the gun. The adult scoffed and asked why (about the luck in the kid not getting killed) and the rangemaster noted four people in adjacent stalls with weapons in hand, who had shifted their stances to face the confrontation (though still pointing their guns downrange, something they could remedy in a blink). The rest of the range (25 stalls) had stopped shooting, and everyone was shifting around to get out of the potential lines of fire. That's the thing about a bunch of trained shooters, nobody had to organize it, nobody had to tell anyone else what to do, they just did it.
When the two adults realized how much the situation had already escalated, they backed down and packed their things. The kid apologized, not to anyone in particular, but said he didn't mean to point it at anyone and he didn't mean anything by it. One of the guys who had been at the ready said, "We know - that's why you're still alive."
thats the coldest line I've ever heard. if that was all directed at me with my parents acting that way I'd feel ashamed every time I saw a gun.
That's what I've seen happen also. I'm English and saw a fellow European getting a little "blasé" with a pistol and the range master came down on him like a tonne of bricks. Safety is a critical component of good gun ownership and doesn't take anything away from the pleasure of shooting.

Gosh, I love my country. I lived in London for many years and actually never wanted to move back to Switzerland. Since returning, I’ve had an uneasy friendship with Switzerland, always missing England. How strange is it, that it took an English man’s numerous videos to make myself fall in love with my native country again. Thank you Tom!
Switzerland for the taxes, London 3 weeks a year to buy stuff and catch up with family. It's a nice compromise.

The so-called 'American Sniper' (Chris Kyle) was murdered at the firing range by an acquaintance. Tom's statement was a little naive. Action beats reaction.
@@thePronto perhaps, however, this firing range has very strict firing procedures, requiring you to be laying down before even loading the rifle. The breaking safety rules surrounded by military trained enthusiasts would have plenty of opportunity to enforce the rules before an action happened.

In a similar vein, who would be dumb enough to rob a gun shop? And yet a surprising number of attempts are made (here in America, of course.) But the variables are so much greater than what Tom was talking about, of course.
@@donjones4719 It is very silly to rob a gun shop or attempt murder at a shooting range. But robberies and attempted murders happen everywhere. The point Tom makes is that a murder at a gun range is no more likely than a murder anywhere else because being surrounded by trained military men essentially balances out the increased presence of firearms.
I remember a shooting range I went to in Kent many years ago, it backed onto the Thames Estuary. I was firing either the LMG (Bren) or GPMG.
Every time a large ship came up the Estuary we all had to stop shooting because you could theoretically shoot the passing ship, I think that most of them were container ships but I know there was a gas terminal somewhere not too far away so an automatic rifle hurling 7.62 at a floating gas cylinder probably isn't great for the local landscape.
But what if I want to see a big fireball? It could be fun
This was cool to hear. I took 2 semesters of German in high school, as well as having a German exchange student come live with us for 6 months, so I learned a decent bit of German. Let me tell you, it is an entirely different thing to hear someone speak Swiss German. Little things you notice that you're like "That was right, but why did it not SOUND right?" its very interesting.
Fun Fact: That is not Swiss German, that is just normal German with a swiss accent
If someone speaks swiss german, then even most germans won't understand it (south germans mostly do, their dialect is similar)
Spotting a swiss person in germany is very easy, the dialect just shines through :)

not sure if you caught it, but even toms subtitle guy (a german) made a mistake. southern germanic dialects are very hard to understand for speakers of "official" german.
The guy in this video spoke his very best and clear Standard German, not Swiss German. And he did a very good job at it. If he had spoken in Swiss German, I assure you, not even the Germans would have been able to understand most of it.
That's actually insanely good marksmanship for someone with no experience and iron sights at that distance. Kudos.
Those rifles are very accurate and the sites super high quality. The 90 or 57 both shoot very well indeed at 300m. Good shooting I agree but a lot of people would be surprised at how accurate they can be with those rifles.
That's not very far. I'm not a very good marksman but I would have had a significantly tighter group.

From the sky it looks dangerous, but the concrete barrier makes sense. Our gun range here in the states has a similar feature, but 10 feet above the ground to prevent stray rounds from going into neighboring homes' yards since our club is in the middle of a residential area. We were there before the houses, but we take great care to protect our neighbors.
I do take issue with them saying it's impossible for bullets to go through that because mighty immediate thoughts were several weapon systems that could absolutely Pierce through that concrete, however, if he said it's impossible for small arms to fire a bullet through that then I would have agreed

It is nearly standart in all swiss shooting ranges, where you shoot at a range of 300m.
I had this exact thought, it's so cool!
It not only tracks the position of the shot. It also checks if the shot was fired from the right booth. So if i shoot from booth 7 to target 8 the shot wont be recognised. This is also done with microphones
It's not complicated at all, that's one of the reasons it's such a good idea.
@@felixmerz6229 True, quite simple technically, but way more complex to set up than just eyeballing where the bullet hole is with your eyes.
You should check out the German city of Munster, Lower Saxony (NOT Münster!). The German army (Bundeswehr) has two military training areas north and south of the city which they use to fire long range artillery over the city. When you're in the city, you can see the projectiles flying over you and hear the distant sound of warfare, very idyllic.
Also very idyllic is the chemical dump right next to the city.

As a lieutenant in the Swiss army this video is very accurate. We don't mess around with gun safety.
As a soldier of the swiss military i know this is only true wenn there is no amunition or offcers around
Most gun owners in general don't. The fastest way to have your guns taken away is to misuse them.
@@HalcyonVoid Unfortunately, that’s sadly not common here in the States. For individuals with proper training or instruction, its true, but the overwhelming majority of gun owners here had zero instruction beyond what their Uncle Cletus told them while shooting at road signs.

I was wondering what would happen if I would hit the wall (for whatever reason). Sure, the wall is thick enough for the projectile to not penetrate it.
So the question I have is how far and in which directions could a projectile bounce off the wall? Isn't there still a chance for a "freak accident"?

As someone who has been shooting for over 40 years, that's damn good shooting for someone who has never shot before. Especially considering the distance and use of iron sights! Good shooting Tom!

@@agustinvenegas5238 Laying down while shooting does indeed make you much more likely to hit your target well as it is much more stable than standing up or shooting from a crouching position. You can compete in many different ways of shooting, at very varying distances. What's a good score in one competition might be a rather disapointing score in another because of the varying difficulty. All competitions are equally difficult though, as your competitors have just the same situation as you.
Those diopter sights are really good for that sort of shooting
This is a really cool approach to a long distance firing range in an era where space and range is severely limited due to the rapid expansion of civilization.

I love the functionality of it. CRTs are a good display technology that are highly adaptable and have better colors, not just a quirky aesthetic.
@@lepidotos I don't think any of that applies to a monochrome display that has a mostly static image.
In Switzerland you can go to the "Jungschützen" which is the juniors (15-20y) section of those shooting ranges, for free! Teenagers learn how to shoot with the rifle you shot, stgw 90, over 300m. You also learn the most important thing, gun safety! It's very ingrained in our society, everyone I know that owns a gun has the necessary training and respect. Back when I was still a member of the shooting range, around 17 years old, I would have my personal assault rifle at home, but we would leave a piece (Verschluss idk the word in english) and the ammunition at the shooting range. I would walk through the main train station and would ride the train with the rifle on my back to go to the shooting range. No one ever bat an eye.
That's very cool. Switzerland has by far the best aditude and policies on firearms that I've ever seen.

Back in the nineties where I lived, they would take the whole rifle home. They also didn't seem to check if anybody had some ammo on them when they left.

It's just such a big no go, I think everyone would feel ashamed if someone was caught doing that. I was barely allowed to take an empty one home, I thought it would make a cool necklace pendant. Ive been staying here for the past week and drove past this shooting range thought i recognised it! Such a stunning area for it to be in too.
I went to a shooting range in Switzerland when I was young, it was a great experience, seemed very safe.
Whoever wants to shoot at passing cars doesn't need to be at a shooting range to do so.

@@Tzizenorec True, there are a lot of interesting facts in this video but on the topic of why people aren't going to the range to shoot at cars, in a country with compulsory military service where most soldiers who serve keep their weapons, this is the only argument you really need. If someone wanted to go down to that road and shoot at cars, they don't need the shooting range to do so.

Most countries have height maximums for vehicles, so I imagine when applying for an oversize permit for the giraffe, they would close the shooting range 😁
A lot of countries prohibit live exotic animals in circuses due to the horrible conditions they are typically held in. Not sure about Switzerland but it might not be allowed there.

This is a great video about responsible gun ownership. Loved learning about the firearms culture in another country!
Wow. The coolest part of the range is the electronic targets. I was wondering at the beginning of the video “how do the targets work? Do they have to travel across the road to set up paper targets? Are the targets metal and get spray painted over so you can see bullet impacts?” Using pressure waves to triangulate the bullet impact is by far way more satisfying. It tickles my engineer brain.
In the older days you had Humans under the Targets sitting on a chair. If the shots were shot they stood up and inspected the Target and covered the holes or changed the Target. After that they waved a colored Flag depending on the Pointring you hit.

They had a similar system, but smaller of course, when I was shooting BB-guns as a kid.

That's a fascinating setup for shooting. If you can predict the path of bullets, you can have them flying right past you without incident.

I used to love Tom's old videos being a computer science and linguistics nerd myself, and years ago I was conflicted with all the seemingly random subjects for his new videos. As an American, I'm jealous of a country where decisions are based on facts and a rational calm acceptance of the facts, rather than the raw emotions that politicians can inspire from the lowest common denominator based on optics.
You mean like banning organised racing because of one accident that occurred in another country? That's Switzerland. The same nation that is debating tightening its gun laws to "EU standards" despite being one of the safest nations in the world for it and many EU nations being far more dangerous.

Weapons laws (weapons in general, not just firearms) are universally idiotic. I have yet to find a jurisdiction where this isn't the case. As near as I can tell, politicians for the most part seem to realize that they don't understand the subject and need expert testimony to help them out - but for some reason government institutions have an uncanny ability to find "weapons experts" that are just shockingly incompetent.
It's amazing how the concept of this place could be deemed extremely irresponsible and dangerous, but because of the sheer amount of respect and willingness to follow the rules, it is probably the safest gun range ever.
I thought the point is to scare the users into following rules. The word "lawsuit" is enough to put the heebie-jeebies into anyone. 😁
@@largol33t1 The Swiss don't have as much of a contrarian attitude as, say, Americans; you will generally see them following the rules out of respect rather than needing to have a fear motivator like lawsuits.

This is not the only shooting range in Switzerland that goes over a street. In the town where I live there is a shooting range where you shoot on the side of a hill, over a valley 300m wide and the targets are on the hill on the other side of the valley.
Also, when I was 13 years old my whole class helped at a shooting competition to write down the points of the shooters and control their licences. It was a good way to earn money and it was completely normal for the parents to let us work there, like any other job for teenagers. Everybody new that it was completely safe. There were even some kids our age shooting.

Agree. I just hope that technical measures don't dominate the discussion here. Culture makes a big difference too. Gun worship, guns as a symbol of masculinity and power, gun marketing, gun politicization, mental health in general: all are very different in Switzerland. If America could aspire to a pre-Columbine culture, on both sides, then gun control would be less of an issue.

@@jaysoto1182 they've fought vehemently to prevent closing the gunshow loophole, which is how a lot of firearms are legally sold to illicit weapons' dealers and have impeded attempts for waiting periods and mental health being part of background checks. The ease of access to a weapon also leads to increased suicide rates. The NRA used to actually advocate for gun owners, but they're now only manufacturer lobbyists. They'll drum up fear when dems are in power, causing weapon and ammo sales to skyrocket. Then during repub terms, they consolidate power and ensure manufacturers are protected from potential lawsuits. They've been very good at their job, until recently when it turns out the ceo was siphoning money off the top for himself.
Culture is never a monolith, but it's clearly different how we venerate firearms compared to anywhere else in the world. There are literally more weapons than people, with nearly 400,000 of them unregistered (that is more than most countries have total). We literally value access to firearms are a more important right than access to food, water, housing and definitely healthcare. Obviously not everyone thinks this is the right way to do things, but clearly not enough people think differently enough to change any of this.
There is clear evidence that access to a firearm increases successful suicide rates, which is the majority of gun deaths in the US. Instead of coming anywhere near trying to address this problem, instead the NRA got the CDC banned from even studying gun violence as a morbidity factor.

I grew up in Tyrol, Austria. There, the Schützengilden (shooters guilds) are very active too and a lot of villages have their own range. Mostly .22lr (small caliber) though as space is often limited and it's often within the village, so you don't want to disturb the neighbours too much. The village I grew up in also has a range that shot over the road. You couldn't even see it if you were in a normal shooting position, so no danger unless you do stupid things, which no one dared. That range I believe was in operation since sometime in the '60s and never heard of an incident.
I was there a few years ago. I even walked alongside the line of the shooting and listened to the bullets whizzing by with their loud supersonic booms.
That must've been awesome... somewhat grimm and war like, but awesome nonetheless.

@@ottersirotten4290 Well, i cant say for sure, but i know a lot of people eventually as they get older get rid of guns as they are expensive to shoot, and peoples physical abilities may not allow them to get out and hunt or go to the range to shoot as often.
I was a Marine stationed near San Diego that had setup a little bit more advanced than this that ranged between 100 out to 500 yards.
I used to work for a major telecoms company headquartered in Illinois (you can probably google which one >.>!).. In many US states, they have microphones planted at major intersections in cities whereby the local police authorities can use this mic system to triangulate gunshots to specific city blocks, often times specific buildings. Of course, this is essentially a larger scale version of what is going on with these sensors, but it just goes to show how sound wave propagation is a sound (excuse the pun) method of determining a point position.
Shot finders using microphones has been common tech for over a decade. Military uses it to find threats. Police use it in cities to monitor gang activity etc
we have one here too, normal shooting range have various stages up to 200 meter, but those using mouser had to shoot from the 350 meter, which was through the forest, over a road everyone use to daily driving and there was a raised ground/hill and then smashed down logs so people could lie down and shoot, but they were about 10 meter above the road in total when shooting to the targets on the range....also, I think it was only those who were in the Home Guard which i guess is similar to USA national guard? or what those people in rambo 1? civilians with some some training with military arms that will assist military if something happens

In England we don't have that. Our national tax is based on income and property ownership but the government works it out for us. We get a letter either once a year (or once a month depending on what you choose). VAT is usually already on the item when we buy it IE on the shelf it's a pound for a can of coke, the cashier rings it up, we pay 1 pound

You should do a shooting video article about UK gun culture. It's quite amazing how different it is between countries based on history, law and culture. There is a growing scene in the UK although it is unfortunately still a hidden scene due to only seeing negative press in the public eye.
Is it really growing? That's a positive given how small it is. Firearms history in the UK is fascinating given how unrestricted the general populace has been since before the 1900s. Except if you were a Jacobite in Scotland.
There is a range like this where i live, but its over a river where people can swim and kayak. as far as i know its impossible to get an angle to shoot one of the swimmers, even if you tried. you'd have to jump off the wall of the range after climbing it and land in the drink, then start shooting and you are way out of "accident" territory at that point. People still hate the range though because the backdrop is a berm and not a baffle that catches the lead. that means lead leaches into the water over years :(

I can get the complaints. It's not the shooting or that it's over the water. It's just that there's no consideration of what happens after the shooting is done.

Most European countries have similar laws to Switzerland in these situations where you can get a firearms permit after showing that you're qualified by using them for a year at a range and then completing a safety course. They just don't have the exception where you can keep your firearm after finishing conscription and also few have conscription anymore.

@@NighttimeNubbs Yea it's the same here in the US as there. There are virtually zero incidents of purposeful shootings at ranges... it'd be suicide. And they also don't f*ck around here with newbies not following the safety rules to the T. At my range, one small mistake gets you permanently banned for life. They have a whole 'box of shame' of membership cards they took from people, sitting behind the counter.

Military vehicles also use microphones to state the direction of just one bullet flying by.
Triangulation is really fun when you start to think about it.
It's the Sius Ascor system they use all over Europe. Very expensive but very accurate.
There are some open-source projects with microphones and a raspberry pi which do the trick as well, if you happen to own a range and don't want to fork out money for a Sius Ascor (which is German and thus very user-unfriendly designed).

Wow, now I understand 😂 ! I drove on this road, in holiday a few weeks ago going to Luzern, and I increduly noticed the targets ahead my car on the left. Then I carefully looked backward on the other side (I was driving) looking for, and I seen the stands. At that time I thought "well they must close the road sometime to be able to shoot" and find it crazy, thought nobody will trust me back at work in France. Reality is even more crazy!
The funny thing is: it is totally not unusual to shoot over roads in switzerland ;) There are so many shooting ranges, (no wonder, if every memeber of the army has to shoot his gun at least once a year+many rifle clubs) and of corse some are over a road.... Where would you get an open space with 300m in length elsewhere :D

A flat part of land could be quite expensive, a lot of the small area of switzerland is either steep/mountain or near urban areas... Its all about optimal use of the space & since it can be done save as shown in the vid no concerns about it ✌🏼

What about if a bullet skims the top of the wall and loses velocity and falls into a car
@Robert Swann You underestimate the velocity of a round. I bet if you go outside and throw a .308 cartridge as hard as you can at a car window it will shattter it.

@@aryanpashtun416 I can guarantee you that you can't throw a .308 BULLET (the part that leaves the barrel) hard enough to even crack a windshield or side window. A .308 bullet weighs around 9 to 11 grams. the 5.56 bullets they were shooting are much lighter and would love energy much faster after grazing a concrete wall, not to mention using aerodynamics from deformation, making it slow even faster, and most likely not hit directly point-on.

I like to think if cows do think like that, their internal monologue is still like:

There are ranges in Switzerland that have cows grazing above the targets. Raise the gun up by about 3-4 inches and you would hit them.
Funny enough, that's what I how I refer to rifles, most of the time. "Donnerstock", meaning thunder-stick.
We have deer on our range regularly. We have had to stop shooting due to deer standing in front of the 300 yard berm
They are possibly thinking: "Nice how quiet it is here down in the valley. One can't sleep up on the Alp when the army is shooting it's artillery right in to the rock beneath us all night. Even the cupboards of the herdsman were shaking up there." True story, I was herding cows in the Swiss mountains at age 14 together with my 15 year old boss. Teenagers sleep better than adults and we were naturally quite happy to leave the parents down in the valley and run the farm on our own terms :-)
That range is so nice. So, so damn nice. We have nothing even close to 1/10th of what they have over there where I live (Chino CA, USA).
Hey as long as you shoot well over the Roadway no Biggie!! In Pa. here the same holds for Deer Hunting as long as as long as you are shooting above the roadway!!
I got invited to this range when I was an active German Bundeswehr reservist. Shooting across the road was something I did not expect. It was a fun day though. Also the hidden bunkers in the mountains are a brilliant sight. If you visit Switzerland and are interested in military stuff you should visit one.

I remember a traffic stop in Switzerland while jet fighters taxied from underground hangars on one side of the road to the runway on the other. I guess that's just what happens in a country with limited level terrain in the valley floors.

This is not the only shooting range in Switzerland where you shoot over a busy road. Next to where I live there is the same going on (in Tuggen). I often nearly pooped my pants when I was cruising around with the windows down and all of a sudden this loud bang. Even after using this road for nearly 12 years I regularly get scared :D

Honestly a sign would be a good idea. A startled driver could potentially cause dangerous situations on the road.

I've seen similar shooting ranges in Switzerland, nice shooting.
Funnily enough, this range is not unique in Switzerland for shooting over an active road. There are plenty more, for example the ones of Chrüzegg (near Menzingen, ZG) and Grynau (near Tuggen, SZ). It is always interesting driving under them in a convertible, when you can really notice the shots being fired overhead.

dude, in the area of Pilatus (Mountain) in Schwarzenberg, there is a really crazy one. you can allmost touch the bullets which are flying through the air overhead.
Literally pass under the one near Tuggen twice a day in a bus. Sometimes when i look at it i hope they calculated for higher vehicles😅
I love how everyone is talking about the cars but no one is commenting in the entire cattle farm pasture right before that. Just has a bunch of cows Vibing right below a shooting range. Oddly serene.
Cows never care about anything in less it gets in the way of their food, which is everywhere. My buddy's property is a cow farm, we have to wait for the cows to shove off every so often, as the rifle fire doesn't concern them in the slightest.

@@LostShipMate firing a weapon near to livestock is not the same as having a high velocity round passing over their heads. If you've never served in the military and had to pull targets on the range during qualification and marksmanship training, its quite an experience to hear the loud "crack" as the bullet breaks the sound barrier above your head and then you see the hole it made in the target.
