    Ok. Well one idea you might want to keep in mind. When you're drilling a pilot hole you can just put a piece of blue painters tape around the bit at the depth you want to go to. It's simple and it helps to make sure you don't go any deeper than you want to.

  • @KhiavDim

    Tip: Get two drills. One for the drill bit for pilot holes and one to screw the screw in. I swear, such a time saver!

    I love you guys for making this video. I've always wanted hidden hinges on my old 1950's cabinets! My vintage yet sturdy kitchen cabinets thank you for saving their lives. Paint and hidden hinges is enough of an update to keep me happy with the look and it will cost less than new cabinets. I also always wondered what to do about the hidden hinge overhang into the cabinet, and you tackled that as well. Many thanks!

    Old video but exactly what I need! I have a separate nice workshop I use for sewing, crafting! Im trying to make it look nicer as I do have clients in. Unlike house that has hidden hinges they used cheap black hinges on the lower white cabinets. Very distracting to me! I didn't know how to change out. Until I saw this! Thanks so much!

    Hinges for face frame cabinets like yours would have a 90 degree bend in the part that attaches to the cabinet so they could be attached with four screws instead of just two. Those are harder to size so I see why you went with these. You ended up using a third screw, though, because two can't do the job with spring-loaded hinges. That third screw will end up working in opposition to the first two. If screwed in more firmly it would push the right side of the cabinet-mounted part of the hinge toward the back of the cabinet face frame, or at least 90 degrees from where it should be. That would pull the left side of the same cabinet-mounted part of the hinge its two screws away from the frame. A strip of wood of the correct depth, glued and screwed the whole height of the cabinet interior, would yield a more stable long-term result.

    • @jlau8074
      @jlau8074 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have this same situation with our cabinets which is why I haven't tried to convert the hinges. Are there hinges available with the 90 degree bend that you mention so they can wrap around the edge of the inner cabinet? We have about 30 cabinet doors so adding wood strips along each of the cabinet interiors would be a big job. Thank you!

    • @johnmartinez9220
      @johnmartinez9220 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jlau8074 Not a 100% sure but I'm pretty sure that they make them for for framed faces and for unframed faces

    • @GregFlasck
      @GregFlasck 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, if you wanted to use these frameless hinges on a framed face cabinet (because you don't want to sink new holes in the door for the framed hinges) - is adding the wood along the length of the fame so you can use the frameless hinges an acceptable alternative?

    I love a good DIY shortcut! That must have been a great AHA! moment. Little tip you probably already know about - to keep from drilling pilot holes too deep, put a piece of painters tape on your drill bit at the correct depth so you have a visual marker to keep you from drilling too far.

    Thank you for your generosity in showing this video. There comes a point, in my estimation, where the "look" of hidden hinges does not outweigh the stability and ease of just using the old style hinges. I think having to angle the back hinge and have the rigged inside look, or having to shim up the back of the inside hinge, just isn't worth the time and effort imo. Maybe there is some other kind of hidden hinge which would work better with the specs of old cabinets?

    • @grandmaraps
      @grandmaraps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally concur with you. It seems that the weight of the door is simply being held on by the screws. I would like hidden hinges but I think my only option would be to upgrade to three quarter inch doors and use the European style hinge. My old doors in a 50 plus year old house is only 1/2 inch.

    Great video guys! So when filling the holes/painting the old hinge's spots do you do that by removing all the doors or with the doors installed? Thanks for any help!

    • @younghouselove
      @younghouselove  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Either could work, depending on whether or not you're reusing any of the old hinge holes. If you are (or you're unsure) you could fill the holes with the doors on so that you're sure to only fill ones that won't be used again. But generally it's easier to patch, sand, and paint holes will the doors are removed.

    • @younghouselove
      @younghouselove  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It just fell off! There were several areas that were peeling and had to be glued down, and luckily the side near the fridge was one of them.

    • @jackr2323
      @jackr2323 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A little acetone will dissolve the contact cement. If you put it in a spray bottle and gently pry out on an area, then spray the acetone at where the laminate is bonded to the substrate, you can slowly work down the side of a countertop, but work from an area where the acetone won't get onto a surface you don't want to separate.

    I would add a piece of wood to fill in the space to make it look professional. Yeah nobody will know unless you are selling the home and someone sees it. It looks like an amature did it. If the top screws matched up, there is no need to keep the old hinge on.
