I've watched several of your videos and I love the way you explain the swing simply. Thank you for your great lessons. I wish I could play a round with you to get tips on my overall game, but unfortunately I live in South Korea. I am glad I came upon your videos and will try your teachings in practice.
The left arm exercise drill may be one of the best but unknown secrets in order to improve a golf swing. This exercise should be emphasized more. Thanks for the tip.
It will. The feeling you want to get is the left arm/shaft 90º angle doesn't change in the hitting area. Keep practicing keeping the shaft level to the ground through the ball and you'll get it. No, you won't whiff it; the clubhead drops on its own. phil
@secretogolf I suggest that you practice some slow swing with just your left hand/arm. Try hitting the ball only using your left arm and see how your hitting accuracy improves. In this drill you do not keep the 90 deg angle at impact, where the arm and club must be positioned similar as when you initially addressed the ball but now with a slightly rotated torso towards the line of flight or target.
@secretogolf No, not 90 deg at impact. This an arm strengthening drill, like lefty backhand in tennis for righthandeder. Generally righthanders have strong and power in their right arm. In baseball and tennis the power arm is the right. In golf there must be balance between the right and left arm. The weaker left must be trained to swing AS IF you were left handed. In the golf swing the LH should pull while the RH holds everything in place. Also, the body must be rotating on its axis as well.
@secretogolf As the club passes thru the hitting area the clubhead drops vertically down on its own. This is the given, no need to push it down. The feeling of holding the 90º angle thru the hitting area ensures the clubhead is not pushed vertically down. It is the job of the player to move the club around the body, not down, and certainly not down the target line. A 'down-the-target-lne' move results in early release, breakdown and mis-hits....
Yes, partly. But most of all it prevents a shaft/left arm breakdown at impact. Because pushing the clubhead vertically down coming into the ball results in a flip.
Stay with it! Keep exercising the left arm as much as possible. This will make it more dominant, maintain shaft/left arm alignment and submit the right. Stay with it...
@wastl67 Yes, the "Right Arm Only" exercise is great for getting the feel of pushing the shaft around the body vs down at the ball. Very helpful exercise...
(cont)... A good swing FEELS LIKE the 90º angle is always held. This frees up the arms to move around with the body turn and hence, stay in the same position with the body thru the swing. phil
Hiya Phil. I don't know if you remember, but back in the early to mid 1980's I was a member at the club you were the pro at in Minnesota. I was in the Coast Guard at the time. Just wanted to say hello. Remember the RABBITT? Had a load of fun out there. I learned a lot about golf from you and your assistant.
When start to drill the left arm downswing , is it correct that we use left shoulder together with left hip to drill the left arm down , isn't it ? .....Tks so much
Last 3 fingers...... Enough pressure to keep firm throughout the stroke. Also, hold the club in the left hand around the house, for 30 minutes, whatever, to get a good feel of it and build up left forearm muscles.
@@peejay3 that is so hard for us amateurs to do..does not weight shift automatically and left leg and hip move out of the way as left arm comes down? Like in throwing a ball one does not consciously move the weight?
You should be looking for 'feel' of the sweet spot. To find, you must at times miss. When you do miss, you want to feel that too! Something forged with a thin construction; not too heavy on perimeter weighting which inhibits feel of contact.
Peejay been struggling keeping my left arm straight, actually been doing quite better with the y shape, but I see in my left arm bend/break, any tips or help??
Hi Phil its me again , went to try out some clubs and the pro there looked at my swing and said arm swing very good , but said I was keeping my head down to long so wanted me watch flight of ball ,at what point do I lift up ? forgot to ask him LOL Jason uk
Why swing slower? Slower than what? My advice: swing at your tempo (whatever that is) but always be on your left leg and in balance at the finish. Let the club be quiet at the finish, no recoiling.
Hey, didn't realize these comments were open, unanswered. So here goes.... The weight of the clubhead will unhinge the wrist(s) naturally thru the ball. There is no need to push vertically down as you approach the ball; the clubhead drops down vertically by itself. Pushing down equals a shaft/left arm breakdown at impact. Holding the 90º shaft angle thru the ball (the exercise) gives one the feeling of this inaction of the wrists approaching the ball. (cont.)
I was a hacker. After practicing what I saw in Phil Hurrle's videos, I downloaded his PDF book for $15. Every part of my game has improved. Hurrle teaches you simply without wasted words what really good golfers and athletes do naturally. You have to enter the website to find it : www.theyshape.com. I'm not sure why the great players, coaches golf channel and utube videos don't teach the golf swing this way. Thank you, Phil.

Yes. The left hip moves around, the left shoulder moves up. These moves bring the left arm to 1/2 down.
Class....I hit every shot in the video solid.

Thanks for the positive comment. I mainly try to explain the hitting area in plain English. Good luck! phil

You have to actively do it yourself, somewhere about 1/2 way into the backswing.

How to open hips in downswing before or during when u drop the club in downswing?
Best exercise. Hitting balls this way gave me a better understanding of the y shape. Before the downswing do I shift my weight to my front foot?
NYC Born Weight will transfer to front foot as hips turn. I like to think of turning my center (stomach) then the weight will follow.
