  • How to Remove or Fix Dead Pixels or Screen Cancer on a Gameboy Pocket - The Epilogue.
    A final look at fixing dead pixels and the science behind how Game boy screens work, how pixels die and the premise of how to fix them.
    Based on my first video "How to Remove or Fix Dead Pixels or Screen Cancer on a Gameboy Pocket" • How to Remove or Fix D... and follow up video "How to Remove or Fix Dead Pixels or Screen Cancer on a Gameboy Pocket - Following up" • How to Remove or Fix D... .

    This is really cool. I hate it when vintage repair channels replace the entire screen due to dead pixels, when they can really be fixed with some time and patience. Hopefully more people will see this and learn that they don't have to go through the troubles of replacing their entire Gameboy screens just because of a few spots here and there.

    This is really incredible! It makes me sad to think of all the LCDs that have been thrown out over the years just because they didn't know to do this. Thanks a lot for figuring this out!

    This is the most promising thing I've seen on TH-cam in months :)
    I have two Gameboy Pockets, both with "screen cancer". I thought that I have no chance of making them playable without a replacement screen but you have just given me hope.
    Thanks for sharing these discoveries Andy!

    Really great episode! Been waiting for this video. I've been collecting screens with "cancer" and have been trying to find a factory in the US that makes screens like this (not many exist anymore). But I thought it could be interesting to visit one of these factories and talk to them about the screens. Might even be possible to have Game Boy screens re-laminated with new liquid crystal, but would obviously require some pretty specific machinery. Thanks for putting this together :)

      Thanks so much, I really appreciate the feedback. I've actually found a place locally that says they can build me screens that match the exact specs of a MGB screen, however the production costs are quite prohibitive for a hobbyist like me.

    This also can be happen when the display gets an impact, the force causing the crystals to spread out as "dead pixels". Usually damaged quartz displays can't be repaired.

  • @Suedeash

    Interestingly some people have observed their screen cancer going away over time on Gameboys and other old LCD handhelds, and others have also said that it's less of an issue in less humid and cooler environments... The principle of spreading the dead clusters out with pressure is something I just did on a DMG that turned out pretty well, except that I used my thumb and pressed so hard that I ended up with a blister lmfao
    Great video! I have two Wonderswans with very small areas of screen cancer, so I'm hoping that they will not spread too badly. If they do, I'll either apply this pressure technique or simply put in IPS screens and keep the old screens around for a rainy day!

  • @Officer94
    @Officer94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very interesting, I have a few screens here which have slightly "cancer" around the edges so I think I'm giving this a try next time I work on the consoles. Maybe it's caused by some cracks in the glue which holds the glass layers together preventing from air sipping in.
    The theory of this is endless but all we can do is trying to fix it.

  • @SiXiam
    @SiXiam 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Center screen might be started from UV damage which then leads to oxidation as the screen gets tiny holes. I'm curious if electricity can reverse some of this oxidation, reversing the standard charge of vertical and horizontal elements.

  • @xeostube
    @xeostube 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    even on modern LCDs the picture elements getting stuck is a well known problem. They "solve" it by twisting each cell of crystals clockwise and then counterclockwise (or whatever polarization orientation that screen is built with) on successive frames. Since the amount of light that gets through is purely how twisted the crystals are, you can't see this behavior.
    If you defeat this alternation by sending a flickering signal timed just right, the crystals will start to get stuck within a few minutes. It's that easy. It's the reason why bob deinterlacing can leave afterimages on LCDs.
    So the getting stuck has nothing to do with oxidation, it's just a basic property/flaw of liquid crystals. As to why they grow, (just guessing, here) once the crystal gets stuck, it leaves less room for the other nearby crystals to rotate back and forth.

    • @Tendo209Mods
      @Tendo209Mods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While the color flickering method can work on color LCD/TFT/IPS screens, that method doesn't work for monochromatic transflective screens.

      @@Tendo209Mods read the comment again - I'm not talking about unsticking pixels with flicker, but the exact opposite.

    I had a tamagotchi with this issue, and because the screen stays running at all times it would fix itself the more time passed, but when it was dead and I took out the batteries the pixels would come back after awhile. It’s a weird issue.

Sure its not a 100% Fix bit the display show much better after the q-tip procesos pressure.

    Thanks Sir!
    I try it on my OG GBA screen (agb-001), and it's works. Not perfect because there's still some remains, and because it's a color screen, it's leaves some marks after applying pressure around the dead pixels.
    But it's barely noticeable when playing game, and it's better then buying new screen!

    If your theory is correct, does that imply that its likely the cancer will return on any screen thats already had it? I suppose, if it is oxidation, that it implies a level of neglect at some point in the gameboy's life...possibly stored in an place that wasn't temperature controlled (a garage or attic in summer heat or a storage unit in cold winters). Thanks for the videos.

    • @Tendo209Mods
      @Tendo209Mods  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I suppose oxidization 'could' reoccur of the screen is stored in optimal conditions for it to happen. I do have a few of the screens I've fixed still - the first one almost a year old and its perfectly fine still. I suppose I just "hope for the best!" that it doesn't decide to return!

      @@Tendo209Mods does the screen still work in the areas where you’ve rubbed off the screen cancer? My mom ordered a gameboy pocket, and got exited when it came in the mail today because she had been sick but the gameboy coming was something to help distract her from her sickness while she healed. Unfortunately when we opened it it had dead pixels in the middle. I’m thinking of trying this for my mom, but I just need to know if the screen is still fully functional afterwards.
