If the screen is an issue you can always fit a spoiler. I have the MRA spoiler on mine; which I also had fitted to my 2018 GT prior to changing over. It makes a massive difference. At 6’ tall I can ride, visor up, with no wind or buffetting at motorway speeds.
Nice review. Being the same height as you I am really interested in your opinion on the new 1100 Rebel and the Tracer 700. Any chance you could get your hands on them?
So the screen is... good video, I am looking at a tracer in the fall for hyway power, 85mph interstate riding but with maybe an after market screen. I put a mid size Givi on my 650 versys and it calmed the wind down. I am 62 with 6 months of riding... going screenless is tough, especially at sunset when all the insects come out... thanks, good review...
Maybe Yamaha need to provide a decent screen as standard Call me cynical but provide a crap screen as standard and then charge extra for a screen to fix the problem ? It’s a bit like ‘ comfort seat ‘options manufacturers are ripping off customers why not provide a comfortable seat as standard ?
Personally I much prefer the 2020 model, (900gt). Much taller seat ,nicer single tft dash. Good review other than you banged on and on about that screen, being 6'2" you could get the Yamaha XL screen, or a whole host of after market ones, or simply take it off !!
Cheers Julian, yeh it’s a personal thing, the screen was not for me but actually I think I prefer the more sporty unfaired bikes but wanted to try to cover all the bases with an all rounder. You have to try to learn what you like. Enjoy that 900GT
Picked up my standard Tracer 9 on monday and I think I agree with your take on the bike. The cluttered indicator I got used to after a few rides. The brakes on newer yamahas need to be broken in. They are spongey and have little bite when brand new. But i testrode a 2021 mt09 sp when it had only scrubbed the tires and again after it had been broken in. And it was such a difference. I also have the engagement of the clutch all the way out. Gonna sort that out with an adjustable lever i think. At 6 feet tall i put the screen up under 50mph and put it down above 50. Seems to be less buffeting that way. Would definetly recomend the standard version and just get the blipper, luggage and heated grips sepperately. Just a shame the blipper is sold out, so dealer said it would maybe arrive late summer/fall. Great review! :)
Thanks for your comment and congrats on the new bike. How did you find the suspension on the MT-09 SP, too hard for the road or worth the extra money? I do plan to try it myself. You can improve the clutch bite a little with the little existing wheel adjuster on the clutch lever so that it fully disengages. At least after a little time of ownership, the addition of the QS/blipper will improve the bike further. I hope it arrives soon. Enjoy the bike. Cheers
@@thetallbiker9645 I have not tried the standard 09, but i did not find it to stiff at 83kg 182cm. But it feels great, it does not push you into the tank as much as the old model. So it's more comfy. But for my usecase, the tracer does make more sense. And I think I like it a little bit more. At the ripe age of 25 and no kids. My fellow riding friends thought I had a stroke when i told them. But I can keep up with them in the twisties on my Tracer. So I'm happy :) Thanks for the tip. Loving the bike so far :)
Problem with that screen is the angle of the top edge. The outer parts of the edge are channeling the air into the middle and creating a type of wind tunnel effect.
Thanks. Well, the motor naturally has more punch on the tracer as it’s bigger but crushing around on either is good, I think the CP3 engine is a bit less frantic and more effortless but the CB is still not a slow bike. The legs are more tucked up on the CB and I would say the handling is a little tighter and quicker on the CB probably cause of the shorter suspension travel. Although different styles, they are both great bikes but I find wind buffeting much less on the CB. Cheers
Nice review, bro! I am seriously considering to own one of these T9 GT beauties. As I am similar tall and weight as you are, could you advice was it comfort enough ride and position on the bike? Thanks! Simas
Hi Simas, all up I thought it was a very comfortable machine, good leg position and reach to the bars. The only big problem I had was the airflow concerning the screen but I’m sure there are after market screens that you could try to improve on that if you didn’t get on with the standard screen. Best to give it a test ride 👍
Been riding bikes for 50 years, your out in the open where is the wind meant to go ? Oh dear your bodies in the way , if people want to be quiet, get a car 🤪🤪. Bikes will always have buffeting etc , just enjoy it 🤓😊😊
Yeah, but if you ride a Ninja 1000 SX the wind noise is a lot less, so I think Yamaha could improve a bit the windscreen. It is a bit more tricky that it looks like.
I think tacking on some touring bits to the MT-09 doesn't result in a great sport touring bike, especially for tall riders. For sport touring I prefer liter bikes since they usually give better wind protection and have a deeper power reserve for long trips. The Tracer 9 seems like a budget sport tourer for average to shorter riders.
The screen looks the same of 900 GT (which I own) and it's a total crap. A lot of turbolence. I'm not that high (1,78 mt, 5,83") and I found a good compromise using an aftermarket WRS screen, which is high enough to cut 90% of turbolence. I also bought a "sport" windscreen, and even if you have a total "laminar" air flow, you are exposed too much to bugs, especially on long trips. The side (bad) note is that on high position the screen bounces a lot over road bumps (but this happens also on factory one) ,making a cheap and horrible noise.
It certainly is tricky to get a screen that works for everyone on the more upright bikes. I did see a photo of a short WRS screen on a Tracer which made it look similar to the Ducati multistrada pikes peak. I thought it looked like a good option. Cheers
Thanks Brandon. I have tried a Speed Triple before and I used to own a Street Triple but I actually prefer the MT-09. I’m sure the new Speed Triple is a nice bike but the price is getting up there. Cheers
I agree about the screen it’s no good for my 5.8” either. Even with the touring screen I experience some buffeting. At the moment I ride without a screen and will probably cut down the standard screen so it will be lower.
Thanks for your comment. Well, I have seen a short screen by WRS that looks like it might do a good job as it’s nice and short. I can’t confirm it fits the new Tracer or if it solves the problem but worth a look 👍
🤔Ok so the point of this review was just to point out other moto-journalists reviewers were wrong about the weak brakes and the tiny screen...ok. Well at least the other reviews included specs, comparisons, prices and trims. The only thing I got out of this review is along with the squishy brakes and the silly tiny TFT screens the adjustable windshield sucks as well 😁👏
Well Cosef, It's just my opinion that the brakes were good. Fair enough, for a full review I need to include the specs, I did include the price, but for a half hour test ride this was just to give a quick impression, not an in depth review. The one thing we may agree on is that the windscreen is not the best but once again, that is just my option, for myself. I respect other reviewer's opinions but, sometimes they may differ. Thanks for the... constructive feedback.
I am a lot taller at 6.7 (201cm), i think this bike would be to small for me. Its not easy to find a bike that suits me. I now ride a ktm 1090 whith a higher sadle, thats nice.
Thanks for your comment Gijs. The seat has some adjustment on the Tracer and could be worth throwing a leg over to test the size but KTM do make some big tall bikes so I see why you chose that. Cheers
Cant really understand works did Just on half part. I mean.... Bumps you can feel on your back and Is the rear suspension... And.... Tracer 9gt has got semi Active Just on the forks. Doesnt really have Sense semi Active on semi suspension. Like f900xr .. . Just esa on the back. No Sense.

The bad airflow can be cured for about a tenner with a bolt on deflector screen, not a high price to pay and really transforms the ride ! 👍👌

Been looking at these. I'd put a short MRA sport screen on for summer and the MRA touring screen on for winter
Good job mate. I'm picking up my 2022 9GT at 12:00 from Omega Yamaha. The screen worries me!!!!!
Great work here. Thumb up and keep going.
Thanks very much :)
The dash looks okay, but in most POV reviews it looks too dim. Maybe the camera just doesn't really show it.

Yes, I think it rarely a good idea to have a flip up on the top edge of a screen, it seems to cause turbulence.
