      I have noticed this for awhile and its mindblowing how many copies people own of them (no offense 😅) I really do love SJM and her books!!! 🖤🖤🖤 But it is kind of frustrating that others and myself can't read or own any of those special chapters 💔💔 I understand and truly respect the beautiful work and everything they put into it but realistically not all of us can really afford having every single one of them- especially with this economy right now 😓 it's been very tight with everything. I haven't been able to buy much books at all these past couple of years. Only way I've gotten to read has been either through KU, the library or whenever it's on an amazing deal at the store or on Amazon thankfully.

      I think it is disrespectful to the readers. Several of the chapters for all her books feel like they should have been in the official books too. If they ever release a compilation book with all the chapters collected, I would pay for it, otherwise I will not have a bad conscience for making some piracy online to get them when the industry does like this.

    I think it's consumerism at its finest. If we as consumers don't want publishers to be greedy and offer up all these fancy editions and special editions we need to stop buying them. They do it because they know it works. I'd just stand in the aisle at the different stores and read each bonus chapter and only buy one copy personally. You also know every book box that can, will have a special edition as well so it's all up to readers and how they spend their money.

    • @BooksToAshes
      @BooksToAshes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is true. I think when people buy 10 copies of the same book simply for a single change, it makes them do it more.
      I have doubles on maybe 3 books, everything else is singles. I find it shi**y of them to put out one edition and a year later doing really pretty editions so you have to buy more OR have different content for the same book.
      But honestly I’d rather wait for a book box to do a prettier edition anyway. The basic editions aren’t going anywhere and one really nice edition is worth 5 basic ones with bonus chapters in my opinion.

    • @BecxReadz

      @BooksToAshes same I'd rather have a really pretty edition minus a random chapter from a different pov than these basic ones with the added chapter. Just from the last round, I read all the shared bonus chapters and honestly I didn't get much value added to the story but that's just me

    I saw a girl who, if I remember correctly, works in publishing and marketing and she was talking about how Maas likely has no control over this and it’s the big name companies who want exclusive content to push us away from Amazon or other websites where authors can sell their own work. While I understand why each company would want their own exclusive chapters of the book(s) I think after so long we should be able to buy the exclusive content so it doesn’t feel like we have to search the internet to find it. Even just one novella length book per series or per few books filled with exclusive content. 💖

    • @nazimelmardi
      @nazimelmardi ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's only to save her. She just signed a contract for x ten millions of dollars. Did you ever discussed anything from the POV of power? I did. She is. Bc when she stands up, she is the value for any publisher in fact she could sell this without publisher in self publishing. So no, they can't force her. This is not a standard business model. Did you see this from any other author who is popular? If this is so easy they could do it with anyone. No it is not. You have to accept the contract. And in a contract there is a balance. You get something for it. Called money.

    I live in the UK so only get access to one of the bonus chapters. I'm hoping that the bonus chapters will go on her website after a set period of time in the same way they did for ACOMAF. I do feel like it is unfair if she does it any other way. Making money is fine, release the book, give it different covers depending on where you buy but I think bonus chapters like this are unfair and penalises people who either can't afford or physically can't get the chapters due to geographical restrictions. Personally I think it will just result in her getting the bonus chapter pirated more rather than people actually buying all 5 US versions. I am very excited for this book though I will say, the cover is stunning.

    I felt that the sprayed edges with the stencil pictures was a way to get you to buy the book and for me it worked because that is what caught my attention and I bought the book because of the cover and because I read the first paragraph and thought I can give this a try. I am not a fan of having 5 versions of a book and you have to go to different stores to get the various versions, it is not that there are 5 versions available at every store. And lets be honest the price of the book will be different at each store, because Wal-mart book prices are lower than Barnes and Noble book prices. Making a book pleasing to the eye is something that publishers have been doing for years because in all honesty we do judge a book by its cover.

    • @nskyegazer
      @nskyegazer ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, if each place wanted a different cover and fancy edging let them do it, but this bonus content thing is just mean to your readers. People buy multiple copies of books already all the time for the different fancy covers. I feel like that is fine, because that's more of a choice a reader can elect into. This just feels like strong-arming loyal fans into buying things because you know they will feel like they have to. People love her enough they will want to support her and get extra pretty additions, but those readers who are not finacially able to buy will be able to still experience the full story. Now those who are not as financially well off will suffer and that just feels really bad.

    Its interesting marketing for sure. I understand each bookseller wanting a reason to buy the book at their store over another. But i think it would be a better ploy to instead of the content being exclusive(leading to pirating), if it was instead the cover, sprayed images or access to art that was exclusive. That way each individual can pick something astetically pleasing to them and if they want can get multiple versions without the authors work being the thing being coveted. In my opinion missing out on content with my beloved characters is a greater loss than missing out on a certain cover. Of course this could still play into the SE craziness, but again i think that much exclusive content is troublesome.

    There is no almost about any of this. It is a way to take advantage of your readers period. I love SJM. I will be buying a copy of CC3 when it comes out, but I refuse to buy 5 versions of the same book to see one additional chapter. Even saying that sounds absurd. Owning multiple versions of a story bc of aesthetics, diff covers, art work, etc is one thing. But putting readings in a position where they would have to buy the exact same book 5 times to experience the content fully is ridiculous. I can easily see ppl walking into stores standing there to read the last chapter then walking out, ordering the books from all the sources reading the last chapter and then returning, and think about what is going to happen if a specific version gets sold out, think about how much ppl are going to try to charge on eBay and Mercari for that version and for what so u can get an extra chapter?? A better way to have gone about this would be to take the five chapters, make 1 file of them and sell them on SJM website for an additional fee. Even that I am not a big fan of but I would rather get a kindle file of the 5 additional chapters for an add on fee rather than having to spend $125 to buy the same book 5 times.

So every reader could purchase all the bonus chapters and support the author without having to decide between bankruptcy and purchasing the same book 5 times or reading the chapters just in stores🤷🏼‍♀️

    100000% stupid of her to do this. Yes she's all our favorite author. But that doesn't mean this isn't wrong of her. All of this everywhere is wrong ... the editions we want that now have to be bought out of country... or from many different places. It's not fair as a reader to not be able to read the whole works. It makes me almost regret becoming a reader. It's like a tease. This is something we should love instead of chase our tails to get the version we want or read what others have read. And now... she is going to cause others to do this also. Shes not a good role model

      Unfortunately her hands may be tied with this, I’ve heard it’s not an author issue but a publisher and distribution issue: the stores want exclusives for ppl to come
      Shop woth them instead of Amazon, the publisher is going to approve it bc tbeu want the money. And SJM is going to get the backlash on the internet bc ppl think it’s her personal doing and sadly it’s just business.

    Honestly, this very much upsets me. It feels greedy and manipulative. And let’s not even talk about the environmental irresponsibility of this decision, trying to convince people to buy 5 copies of the same book. Regardless of whose idea this was, the marketing team or SJM’s, the bonus chapters wouldn’t exist if she hadn’t written them, so she’s complicit.
    I had been planning on buying this book on release day, but I’m rethinking that decision.

  • @Cmoore-Books
    @Cmoore-Books ปีที่แล้ว

    I like SJM as an author and I love special editions, but 5 different editions coming out at the exact same time is way too excessive. I can understand putting exclusive content in maybe 1 edition, but this is way too much. I'm a librarian and I do have my own library with 2,115 books in my own personal collection, but I don't have space for 5 copies of the exact same book. We are not going to mention The 6 copies of The Invisible life of Addie LaRue that I own. 😂 This was a one time exception to my own rule. To help me feel better about myself, I did collect this editions over time as they came out. 😅I also have US and UK editions. The UK edition were just so pretty. Okay, I'm done justifying myself.
    I think that this was probably her marketing team trying to get the most money possible. It's a smart, but devious strategy because there are people no matter how little money they have that will buy all of these editions because they love SJM so much. I don't believe in pirating content online, so I think that SJM should make these stories available on her website after a certain period of time once the book has come out so everyone can have access to these stories. It's not fair to the fans that can't afford to purchase all 5 of these additions. It's probably going to cost close to $200 for all 5 of them. That amount of money makes my heart shudder. I'm not a bigger spender. I'm a saver more than a spender. My book collection might suggest otherwise. I do have a large book collection, but I have been collecting these books since I was a child. They didn't all happen overnight. I could go on forever, but I think I will leave it here. A difficult topic, but I hope that SJM does right by all her fans and makes it so everyone can have access to these stories whether they can afford it or not.

    I was one of the girls who would buy multiple copies of her books. Literally last year I bought the tour edition of HOSAB, the target edition and the books a million edition of the book. I also bought the fairyloot edition of the entire crescent city series as well. This all ran me almost Damn near 200 dollars. I have never opened up my tour editions of her books they’re still in the plastic and I’ve only ever really read one copy but last year I was so bored of the book that I just listened to it off of someone’s TH-cam page. Finding out that there’s 5 editions of this one book is insane I would literally have to spend about 270 dollars to have all of the editions + tour + fairyloot edition. That’s just not feasible, I stuck with my one digitally signed BAM edition of HOFAS. I will most likely buy my last copy of the fairyloot edition but that’s it this year. I’m really debating on a tour edition because if I even wanted to see the show it automatically would come with a standard edition after me paying 30 bucks regardless. So it’s like your screwed into it anyways. Only purpose I would see for buying these extra editions is if I was gonna resell them to the fans who were late to the game. I’ve seen people spend well over 300 dollars for an original cover already. I have no more space on my shelf because of these copies they’re literally piling up on the floor and I’ve never read books more than once. I don’t blame Sarah and the publisher for getting there bag. I find it weird that people are willing to pirate the book because they can’t afford it. If they could those same fans wouldn’t be complaining. They would buy as many as they could people keep saying Sarah should make a novella with all of those copies in it and they would literally charge 50+ for them but make it limited and the girls would still be pissed. The model is clearly working for them to go this extra step since people like Walmart are now being added to the list. I think it’s great they’re giving indie bookstores a special edition but it’s only gonna get worse the more companies buy into it. The fact you have people second guessing there stance on big corporations to buy the Nesta, Azriel, and Bryce from Walmart seems weird to me. If Amazon had there own special edition the girls would continue buying from them. It’s a vicious cycle and I think becuase people are openly saying they’re gonna pirate makes me think the company is gonna get harsher on readers to the point y’all will have cease and desist letters in yalls mail boxes.

    5 editions is ridiculous... The crescent city books are massive!! Do they want readers to buy one of each or are we supposed to pick out favourite? Because that feels like missing out. I have mixed feelings to be honest. I do think it’s a bit problematic and encourages over-consumerism (no hate to you or anyone else planning to buy all of the editions). But the average person cannot afford it but of course everyone wants to read all of the bonus chapters. I had to make a really hard choice but finally decided on the Walmart exclusive because I’m most excited about that bonus chapter. I’m hoping friends and family get the other editions so we can read each others bonus content.

    I think it's silly. I wish she had put them all in a novella or something so we could all have them. I also don't like that I had to choose which one to buy because I cannot afford all of them and honestly I don't want 5 books that are the same except for a small bonus story. That would take up too much space on my shelf I need for other things. I'm not sure why Amazon doesn't get a special one and I'm also not understanding why Walmart and Target does. I would rather support actual book stores. I love Az so I pre-ordered from Walmart which I have NEVER done. I don't buy books from Walmart but I feel like I'm forced to in order to get that story. I hope they don't do it anymore. I hope she notices ppl are upset about this and doesn't do it again

    That's not really a question. This is a bad business model similar to Taylor Swift's management and yes they do take advantage. And did you even think about translation? What will they do with the other lang. versions? Now that's where the chaos will even grow. No matter how they put this out on a web page or whatever they do... In smaller countries this will go sideways. And no, she can't be forgiven here. We do know she is part of this. There is no contract on this planet that forces an author this big and valuable to a publisher to this without her agreement. So yes. She did agree into this. She writes those chapters. She is the one who does the given product to sell. For money. That's it.

  • @BooksToAshes

    I honestly didn’t mind this nor do I care. If I want a bonus chapter I’m sure someone can post it online and it’s not like it’s necessary to the plot right? (I can see that as being an issue if it was).
    I don’t think she had the idea for people to buy 5 editions, I thought more of it being like “hey if you live here, you get a bonus chapter with these characters” kind of like a bonus with the book. It’s not needed to read the main plot so I see no issue but I’m the minority on this it seems compared to other comments. I’m just easy to please and take anything I can get so maybe that’s why 😂 I barely have doubles of books and I barely even buy books since I rely on my library so for me this is whatever.
