I started getting tinnitus and I panicked because I work around a lot of loud machines all day and thought it was impacting my hearing. I flushed out my ear with a syringe and a giant earwax stone fell out of my head. I can now hear silence again :)

My ears started ringing back in late November. I obsessed about it for weeks. I googled what may be the causes of tinnitus. I watched videos on TH-cam. I went on Reddit forums. All it brought was anxiety and it made the ringing even worse. Consult with a ENT specialist asap. Stop trying to self diagnose. Keep tabs of your symptoms but do your best to not think about it. My ringing has decreased considerably so there is hope. I wish everyone the best of luck. Lastly...book an appointment!

My left ear was slightly muffled and ringing for a few weeks and I finally went to the ENT today hoping it was just wax, and it was! The moment they pulled the piece out that was stuck to the eardrum it was so jarring how much clearer everything was for the first few minutes, I'm not sure how else to describe it. I guess you don't realize just how muffled it is until the wax is suddenly gone. It really only felt slightly muffled before they cleared it. Now ironically my left ear is now clearer sounding than my right. They did clear the right ear too which didn't seem to be muffled, and said the hearing should adjust in both ears after some time. And I should mention the ringing in the muffled ear instantly went away when the wax was gone. Just go to the ENT If you can if you think you may have a blockage it's totally worth it. Without insurance they said it would have been like $75-150. I also did try earwax drops beforehand but they didn't do anything, I guess this stuff was really stuck in there.

I've had tinnitus since 1991. I was distressed for about a year and couldn't sleep. I began a head to toe relaxation routine in bed at night followed by a self hypnosis routine. It worked and I'd drop off before completing. The mind can turn off like that. Slowly I got used to it and it receded in distress. Swotting makes it worse as energy moves into the head and one feels like a head on top of a body. Anything that moves your energy into the chest region such as physical work helps immensely. Your brain learns to ignore the ringing. Wax does make it worse cutting off some of the ambient sound. which masks the ringing. I got T from sitting to close to a powerful speaker playing music. Walking in the outdoors using your body is good therapy. Wax doesn't cause it but can worsen it cutting off external sound. Basically get your energy focus out of your head helps immensely..

N1els the simplest answer is to have your doctor look in your ear, if ear wax is obstructing sound from passing through or lodged against your ear drum, then ear wax could be the cause of tinnitus. Remove the wax, wait a few days to see how your tinnitus is affected.

Great video. I started getting the ringing about a month ago - it came on very quickly. I use Q-Tips every day, but I spin them between thumb and index finger to avoid pushing any wax in. I've worn hearing protection my whole life (power tools, concerts, etc.) so it's a real disappointment to get this ringing. Over the years I've had tinnitus before but it lasted 20 seconds at most. I don't have any perceivable hearing loss, but I did the frequency hearing test on TH-cam and I get 11.2Khz left ear and 13.8Khz right ear. If I understand it, the tinnitus is our brains coping mechanism for sudden hearing loss? I'm praying this is from ear wax buildup.

    Interesting and informative overview.
I just went to the ENT today (where he used a spritz of vinegar and suction method) because my at home Debrox and water bulb wasn't quite doing the trick. I think it's because I left it too long to do preventive maintenance.
I've had tinnitus in left ear for many years, which at this point I don't think is related to cerumen. You're right -- the impacted cerumen I currently had in left ear was exacerbating the ringing sound.
Now I'm motivated to do what the ENT suggests as preventive maintenance - 50:50 of white distilled vinegar and 70% isopropyl alcohol; using pipette to place in ear; cotton ball for a couple minutes, and then drain out.
Q: Could you affirm/add to that preventive maintenance?
Aside: What really had me go to the ENT today was that last night I started panicking with the hearing loss and "full feeling". Even though I knew it was resolvable, the anxiety crept in. I had to fallback on some of what I know - EFT Tapping and some self-hypnosis, just to get to sleep.
As for Q-Tips -- 100% agree. Don't use them. I was told by an ENT that the only thing he wanted me to insert into my ear was my elbow. LOL!
Continued success with your videos -- this information was really useful and explained well.

I went to get a hearing test done. The technician said my ears were loaded with wax. She advised getting it removed before doing a test. I had the wax removed at my doctor's office. I didn't see any difference after the wax was removed. This created more anxiety thinking that the cause of the tinnitus was more serious. I went to bed that night and when I woke up the next morning my tinnitus was totally gone. Is it normal to have a delay to see results after having wax removed? This is interesting, you do not see many people talking about the auditory brain. I have had tinnitus that has come on particularly bad in the last couple of weeks whilst my ear was impacted with wax (partially blocked for two months) and had hoped it would resolve quickly with the removal. I had microsuction done yesterday, and it had got a little quieter, but there is still a buzzing/ring like a big tire with a puncture in my affected ear. I am not sure if it is still the physical trauma of the procedure causing the ring and it should get better, of if my brain has reached a tipping point and is now perceiving what it should be masking as if it is valid sound. I wonder how long after the procedure we should expect it to take to settle down. This virus has meant as lot of people like me have had big delays to getting urgently needed treatment.

I think with an ear problem like impacted wax it tends to make the brain draw out any normal ringing that you get in the ear and make you conscious of it, but as long as you get it sorted in good time and do not focus on it as a sound in itself, it should sort itself out.

Dr Ben Thompson, I really appreciate your letting us know that, if ear wax is causing tinnitus, then cleaning out wax should clear up the problem very soon. I'm hoping you might also be able to say that sometimes it could possibly take hours or even days for tinnitus to dissipate after wax is removed. I'm hoping there's reason for me to hope my wax removal could still remove the tinnitus, even though it hasn't yet. Thank you for considering.

My ringing started just over two weeks ago, I’ll be honest, I remember using qtips in days prior, and I’ve been to a couple doctors since, who’ve looked in my ear but haven’t mentioned anything, in fact they never even mentioned tinnitus... well it got to a stage that external sounds started feeling uncomfortable, as in, sounds sound harsh... a couple days ago I was rubbing behind my ear and felt something in my ear come loose and the harshness INSTANTLY dropped, I let out a gasp it was that sudden, there is still a little ringing and harshness but not to the same level, and for the first time since it started I’ve had a couple nights sleep were I don’t need to mask it with other sounds.... a couple days later the thing I felt detach in my ear came out in the shower, it was white and flat, more like dry skin than what I imagine wax is like... I have a appointment for Monday with a audiologist to clean my ear wax. Does this sound like a ear wax problem.

@Sebastian my ears were spotless and looked healthy he said, so no idea... he did say if I’ve had any sinus issues or infections though it can take a while for the euthosomething tubes to clear, so he advised if I still have it in the new year go see a doctor again, he also recommended taking decongestants like Sudafed to help it along, but yeah, I’m gonna give it another week to see if I have any improvements, if not, I’ll go to the doctors again and ask to see a ENT.

@@danger2001 hey! The ringing never went away unfortunately, however like many say, you learn to adapt to it, it is nowhere near as mentally draining as it once was, and I even sleep without sound aid now and I’m back playing video games etc, just not with headphones etc although I’m sure I’d be fine with them too.
One day you just wake up and learn to deal with it. Now that I’m back to doing stuff I enjoy I only really realise the ringing when I stop, so only a handful of times a day, and for anytime it’s slightly bothering me I play cricket sounds in the background at a low volume, they’ve almost become a relaxing sound now the crickets that when I want to relax I play them.
You will learn to adapt, I’m coming up to about 10 months since the start of it, and I’d say I’ve been coping fine for the last couple months. So took me about 6 months to adapt.

Also had a hearing test done the first time and my hearing is fine and my eardrum is healthy. The ringing is still there. I also feel/hear as if something is still shuffling around inside my left ear. If I swallow or yawn I can hear it. What's going on? Please help.

I randomly had my tinnitus stop completely for 4 seconds a few weeks ago...I'd not even moved my head to an angle or anything - first time I've heard silence in that ear for years. I've never been to an audiologist because I'm scared that getting my ear cleaned out won't make the ringing stop...now I know it ACTUALLY completely stopped recently, is a visit to an audiologist likely to stop the ringing do you think?? I am really scared. a week ago my ears started ringing, I hear two sounds, the first is a dull whistle, similar to a eeee and the second sounds like a buzz rrr ... rrr .. After a few days I go to the doctor and she notices that I have my right ear plugged with earwax and no one cared that much about my tinnitus. he gives me an oil to put in my ears to soften the earwax (thanks to this it seemed that my tinnitus was improving because I only heard a slight buzz) and a few days later I go to have it removed with the ear wash. When the doctor removes the earwax with water I start to feel tinnitus again, but the doctor told me it is normal and it would take a while, plus my ear canal was clean and it wasn't even inflamed. An hour after washing I start to feel my ear full, as if there was water in it and still tinnitus. This feeling stayed with me all day,
until at night I fell asleep with my ear turned to the pillow and finally I heard the water come out. But the tinnitus stayed with me. Now three days have passed since the earwax was removed ... I wanted to know if it is normal, if my ear keeps ringing because it has to recover from the trauma or I have to endure this forever.😔

My left ear got clogged a few months ago, and between classes and life in general I made the mistake of not seeing a doctor. I produce a lot of ear wax.
Now my brain’s going 100 miles per hour and I’m panicking, thinking of everything that could happen because I waited. I’m scared to lose hearing in my left ear. I can still hear more than not in that ear, but it makes me nervous enough to keep me up tonight.
My ear doesn’t hurt, the tinnitus (if I even have it) is almost unnoticeable, and I feel some fullness. Sounds are mostly clear with a mild muffling. I know it could be wax, but I’m still nervous.
I’ll be seeing my doctor soon, but in the meantime does anyone have any advice or similar experiences in which you’ve recovered fully?

i do get tinnitus thoug albiet it comes and goes. i don't hear it constantly. also seems if i stress about something or focus on it it seems to there more often and even more loud at those tiems.
i do know my grandmother often had isseus with tons of ear wax, as i have too, seems lik ehave needed a good clearning at least 2x a year, sometimes 3-4 times depending on things.

I have had an osalating noise in my left ear since after the deep nasal swab C 1. 9 testing for a colonoscopy. Some times I think if it gets louder I'll loose it. I believe the swabs were loaded with nano technology for tracking or depositing what the programmers say. This will most likely get A. I deleted.
