    UPDATE: It looks like there's a decent chance that Intel is taking steps to disable this little trick. With the BIOS versions that are already out there people will still be able to do it, but it's harder to recommend now especially for anyone who isn't very familiar with overclocking. I am still working on a follow-up to this video where I'll discuss the implications of whatever Intel is doing to prevent Non-K CPU overclocking.

    • @SassyPatches
      @SassyPatches 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Paul's Hardware I thought the whole deal with the -K series was to make overclocking easier, not to keep people from overclocking normal CPU's.. Why would they disable this? Moneygrabbing?

    • @matinator2267
      @matinator2267 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +SHATORR Yup. If people are able to overclock just fine on a regular chip that costs less than the -K series variant then they are losing money.

    • @SassyPatches
      @SassyPatches 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matinator22
      Well yeah but (imo) you shouldn't limit the ability to overclock a CPU but rather sell a -K series which promotes overclocking through ease of progress.

    • @matinator2267
      @matinator2267 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SHATORR I agree, but I understand where intel is coming from from a business standpoint

    I believe the reason you couldn't go higher was the cache Paul. I noticed when you set the BCLK to 140 that he cache was over 5 ghz. I am pretty sure you can tune that down as I have seen the CPU frequency at 4.8 ghz while the cache is around 3.9 ghz. Most people doing this can reach 4.5 with some reaching 4.8 ghz! Please do a follow up Paul!

    This was super helpful. I was increasing my bclk freq and wondering why the system would crash and then you pointed out that the memory needs to be within a certain range and that made so much more sense. Now my cpu does 3.64 GHz instead of the original 2.8 and is stable as can be.

    • @peiyuanwu4404
      @peiyuanwu4404 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My ram is rated at 2666. Does that mean the cpu can bclk oc further if I lower the ram speed to sth like 2100?

      +Paul's Hardware If you back off the CPU Cache speed you will be able to raise the BCLK even further. It was the Cache speed/voltage holding the CPU back. At 140 BCLK that puts the Cache over 5Ghz.
      Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

    And here I stand, having thought that BCLK was only adjustable to about 103 MHz. I didn't expect lowering the memory clock would help so much as it did here.
    Also thanks for doing a video about BCLK OC, there's not many of them out there even in 2021. There's no way I'd be spending a 100 bucks more just for an unlocked multiplier without switching straight to Ryzen (or whatever comes after it).

      +Luis Angel Murrieta that would work, the power delivery isn't as beefy but it's a great price. I'd want to wire up on/off and reset switches before you go about overclocking, there's usually a fair amount of restarting and it's annoying to have to short pins every time

    Intel has disabled non-K Skylake CPU overclocking across the board -- if you have an older (January 2016 or earlier) CPU/mobo that was capable of this, it might still work though. For now. It's not out of the question that a CPU microcode update could be pushed through the operating system (Win10 for example) that would disable it, and updating to the most recent BIOS for your motherboard will definitely disable it. This makes it much more niche, and difficult to promise long-term support, so for now I have opted not to proceed with my follow-up video.
    AsRock does have some new mobos in the works that have independent BCLK generators which might allow this again, I'll see if they want me to showcase how that works (they're H170/B150 boards btw).

    Paul, when you run the k version cpu you could hit the heat sink block with an IR gun to see what it reads since you should be able to see what it is in windows via software, then you could correlate that data to what you see with the non K 6500 when you can't see the temp in windows. It won't be perfect but it will be in the ballpark.

    • @RaimarLunardi
      @RaimarLunardi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't... but and your friends? your family? One day they will lock up something you care, then what??

    • @bendr251
      @bendr251 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Intel is a company they can do anything with their products. My family and friends are not a company as far as I know. And why would they lock up something that I care about... You can't just take family and a company that is making Procesors, SSDs, computers, etc... You can't just compare it. Family needs to support you. But not locking your things you care about. Company is just making products that people use almost everyday. And they pretty much don't care if the customers are a bit angry for locking a CPU. And if they want to overcloak the CPU they will just spend few extra money on a K version. That is how it works I know it is a little unfair for those people that are on the budget. But if the CPU is working fast and good even if it is not overcloaked nobody would care then (maybe some people that want to squize every single perfomance out of it). That is how it works in this world and this will take some time to change. Who knows maybe it will never change.

    Great video! Do you get any weirdness overclocking just the bus speed with memory, video, sound, storage, or other controllers running off the bus? Over clocking the bus used to cause headaches with other components and controllers back in the day.

    I got a ASRock K4 Fatality and a 6400 with the Evo 212. Made for a nice combo, after the 2.6 BIOS update they removed overclocking but the BIOS was much more stable. I notice that with the 2.6 BIOS (I went back to running it for the OC) it's best to make changes 1 at a time then reboot if you try for more the odds of it hard locking while in the BIOS increase dramatically. Fortunately just a reset gets you back into the BIOS (I never had to resort to the CMOS clearing) I did managed to get a little over 3.6Ghz with out touching my voltages and that seems fine for me.
    The performance gains where very odd for me... Some games and apps really almost seem to ignore the OC and others simply love it.
    Anyway great video, kind of wish I had watched it before I had to learn all those tips on my own lol
    Fake Edit: By locking up in the BIOS I mean even when sitting at complete stock settings, not sure if ASRock will fix this for the OC BIOS (I doubt it) but they did fix it in the update with the SKy OC removed. If anyone is wondering yes you can downgrade the BIOS to gain the OC functions and ASRock still has them up as of this writing.
    After you get your settings in the BIOS, the hard lock thing never happens, only when your making changes.
    Great video!!!

    Quick question.... Was your EVO a little wiggly after tightening it down? I built an almost identical system and the EVO is working fantastic but I just don't like that I can slide it around on the CPU by what feels like almost a quarter of an inch....
    Edit: I like the cooler it works fantastic, huge OC and my temps even at load are very low. Just that wiggle is something new to me... Used to coolers feeling locked in.

    It's so funny that a BCLK overclock is a "new and fancy" feature for the Z170 chipset. My Asrock Z97 motherboard was able to do this right out of the box. Problem is, with Haswell, you really couldn't overclock that way without messing up everything. I don't know, just seems silly that it is suddenly such a big deal (other than it is a relevant way to overclock now with Skylake).

    • @metacustomcomputers3426
      @metacustomcomputers3426 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +feelingtardy It is a "new and fancy" feature, because what your ASRock Z97 didn't have is a divided BCLK that distinguishes between CPU BCLK and System BCLK. Whe you raised your BCLK on your Z97 platform, you overclocked every bus in your system, including RAM and PCIe. On Skylake with the Z170 the BCLK is divided into CPU BCLK and System BCLK, so you can raise your CPU BCLK for overclocking but leave your System BCLK untouched to not overclock any other system-components.
      Kind regards,
      Meta Custom Computers

      I know that, that's why I mentioned it, lol. I'm just saying, it's funny they had to almost add the feature back in for z170. Like they didn't include it with skylake because it didn't work with z97, but then had an "a-ha" moment and rushed to reintroduce it.

    I am not sure if anyone commented on this point and I am not going to read 800+ comments to find out so I will post this anyway.
    If you look at the overclock settings (15:10ish) you will note the cache frequency is set significantly higher than the core frequency, this is one of the reasons overclocks fail on ASRock BCLK overclock enabled boards. When you first enable sky OC (pressing X when prompted during post) the cache multiplier will be lowered below the core multi. For some reason re-entering the UEFI after you have saved your settings and exited resets the Cache multi back to it's original value. While there isn't anything wrong with having your cache clocked higher, as you saw when he dialed things up to a BCLK of 140 the cache frequency was over 5ghz, it is easy to see why that overclock would have been unstable. So, the moral of the story is to reset your CMOS whenever you plan to tweak your settings, make sure you save a profile of the last settings you used then clear CMOS, reenable the SkyOC feature, then load your profile and adjust. It is easy to see if the cache multi has reset, just keep an eye out for it.

    I would be interested in the power draw at idle of the non overclocked cpu and the overclocked one at idle. Since most people would spend a lot of time running it at a low cpu demand more than they would under load it would be nice to know how much power is being wasted doing things like surfing, e-mail, word processing, etc.

    this is very interesting to me, since i have this cpu. i am sure Intel is only worried about extra warranty claims if someone has problems doing this. but that being said, BUTT OUT INTEL!!! once a processor is out the door, its up to us to find ways around your engineering limitations. its no different that GM putting a rev limiter or speed limiter on one of their cars. you had your chance when it was in your house. now its OUR TURN!

    I apologize for the way the text is written. I am Brazilian and I do not speak English, so I am elaborating this question with the help of the google translator.
    I really liked the video. Congratulations! Since the subject is overclocked, if possible, I would like to take some doubts, but it is with regard to overclocking in RAM memories. Can be? The first question is:
    1 - Does overclocking RAM interfere with the average processor temperature? My second question is also about RAM.
    2 - We know that memories with high frequencies or overclocking, whether DDR3 or DDR4 do not bring significant performance gains in games. No longer rendering, the amount of memory ends up being more important than the frequency. I would like to know in what situations we actually have significant performance gains when we raise the frequency and decrease the latency of a memory to the point of concluding that overclocking in RAM really is worth it?
    Thank you very much. =)

    how was the evo 212 able to keep the overclock cool? After testing in prime 95 i would shut down the computer and reboot, get into the bios, and check the temp which @ 4.385Ghz and 1.320Vcore i was at 40C, but it takes a bit of time to get to the BIOS so the cooler was probably able to cool down the chip a bit which is my worry so i was wondering with the i5-6400 and the overclock i am giving it is the cooler master evo 212 okay for now?
