When I tell people im from Colombia. "Colombia" is magically my new nickname😂
Four things that get me mad are when people:
    1)Spell *Colombia* like *Columbia*
    2) *Just because Im Hispanic* *doesn't mean I'm Mexican*
    3) *JUST BECAUSE IM FROM* *COLOMBIA DOESN'T MEAN IM* *RELATED TO PABLO ESCOBAR*
4)People thinking Colombia isn't safe just because of what they see on T.V

I feel in love with Colombia when I went there. Colombia is a very beautiful country and with very nice people. It's a change of pace for me when I go. My girlfriend always tell me to slow down, cause everything in America is fast pace. I'm ashamed at how uneducated and confused my fellow Americans are about Colombia. I tell everyone th ey should go. Because my girlfriend is from Colombia I'm not at some resort, I'm actually mingling with the Colombians.

I met a girl online last year from Colombia. A really nice and very sweet girl. We talk everyday. The first thing I did after I met her was research Colombia. What a beautiful Country! The food looks very good, and most of the people are very nice and friendly. I have since talked to some other people from Colombia. The girl does not speak much English....actually, she may know about six words in total. So I am learning Spanish, as I plan to visit the Country next year and want to be able to communicate with her in her own language. Her city is very beautiful, it is very modern and it is very clean. I live just outside of Chicago, and I will tell you that her City looks way more appealing than Chicago does. Me encanta el pais de Colombia!

Don't feel bad, I understand that it is uncomfortable that ignorant people only base themselves on stereotypes to qualify you and if you are in Gringolandia it wouldn't surprise me either. A percentage of them are ignorant, they are unaware that the cultural and ethnic identity of Colombians, and throughout Latinamerica, is formed by the mixing of ethnic groups, that percentage believes that all white people by default are either from the country, or from Canada, or from Europe.

      Hi Gerard,
Nice to hear from you. I had completely forgotten about Juan's video I commented on soon after our Son was born. All is going very well for us during this crazy pandemic.
We live in the town of Guarne which is located over the mountain ridge from Medellin. I did a lot of research seeking out a place that I thought I would enjoy spending my retirement years. The weather was my first criteria. Not too hot or not too cold. Near the Equator at 7000 ft elevation was the secret. Guarne fits that perfectly. Then being near the most modern city in Colombia plus near an International Airport was also a plus. I don't speak Spanish but met English speaking Colombian's here and other really fine people.
We now are completing our new finca complex that is 900 feet above the town. Guarne has many skilled contractors that were reliable and reasonable. Guarne and the surrounding area has a population of around 25,000 people. To date, 116 cases have been reported. All the merchants and residence seem to take all the precautions to help keep new cases down.
Take care and also Congratulation on a successful marriage.
      Jeff And Family

    • @geraldobrien7323
      @geraldobrien7323 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Jeff Robinson Thanks for replying, Jeff. I’ll definitely talk to my wife about it. I’ve learned how to speak Spanish, so I wouldn’t have to go through that process if we move there. And other Colombians have told me about Medellin, the city of eternal spring.
I’m glad to hear that they’re taking the pandemic seriously down there. Up here in New Jersey, we’re one of the better states, but there still is a sizable portion of the population who think it’s some sort of hoax/conspiracy, so they ignore all precautions.
But anyway, congratulations on your marriage to a terrific woman, and of course on your new son.

I also hate these stupid stereotypes and I also get offended when people still associate Colombia with Pablo Escobar and Narcos, and little else. However, there is another side to the coin here that I found during my trips to Colombia. Colombians would do well to take this same advice when thinking about Americans. And yes they americanized tacos n buriitos in places like taco bell but that doesn't mean that it isn't mexican food

@DaCoLo. Thank you for pointing out the truth about tacos and burritos, I was going to write a comment about this before I read yours. Tacos are a favorite snack food all over Mexico, and consist of a little bit of whatever food you have, in a small fresh tortilla. Burritos are large tortilla wraps from Northern Mexico, and usually include beans. I have many Mexican friends who will testify to tacos and burritos being authentically Mexican food.

It is a little silly to get upset about these things as most of the time these people are simply trying to connect with you. The more positive outlook would be to take this as an opportunity to share some things about your culture to people who know nothing about your culture. That is pretty cool when you think about it because you get to be an ambassador for your country. But when you get upset and let your feelings get hurt, you will instead come off like a snob and probably discourage people from wanting to learn more about your culture. It is fine if you are just using this video to vent but a more productive video would be listing cool things to talk with Colombians about.

In Colombia we have like 200,000 different telenovelas about narcotrafico with the same characters, storylines and messages
Pablo Escobar, Tirofijo, drug trafficking, glorifying thugs and their lifestyles, more Pablo Escobar, cautionary tales, blah blah
Plus I’ve lived it and it sucked. I’m good.

100% agreed. I'm not Colombian, not even a drop of sangre latina, yet I cannot stand any of those "programs". I pray that Colombians continue to promote and develop more opportunities to share the best of what Colombia has to offer. Besides natural beauty, friendly people, fresh healthy food, there is a lot more to enjoy about the country and learn about the culture. The world really doesn't need another series, show, movie, book or even news report about drugs, violence, human trafficking, poverty and perversion. Dios te bendiga.

I'm going to give you a little tip, in Colombia the different ethnic groups abound to a greater or lesser extent depending on the area of the country where you are. Here we don't complicate our minds much with that, this comes from the time of the Spanish empire, for example I live in the Paisa area, and I can say that here there are Caucasian and dark-skinned people like myself to a greater extent, while to a lesser extent there are Afro-descendants and indigenous people. It all depends on the area of the country, as I said, Afro-descendants are more abundant in coastal areas in case you were wondering.

Fortunately this white boy speaks fairly good Spanish which is most helpful! I've run into so many other tourists in Medellin and Pereira who were upset that they couldn't find places where people spoke more english. I did help one couple out of some difficult situation they were in, but that was because they didn't think about where they were going, and I only bring up escobar with one friend because it drives him crazy, Hey parce lets go to hacienda napoles? it's now a joke between old friends now.

There is no need for forgiveness, in fact, the name of Colombia came from Christopher Columbus, in Spanish his name is "Cristóbal Colón". When we became independent from Spain, the leaders of that time took the Hispanic version of the Genoese admiral's surname to give the country its name, which is why it is called Colombia (Land of Columbus). Many of us feel uncomfortable when they say Columbia, and even though it also means the same thing, the fact is that how the name was given that way and how it is a proper name, and then someone saying it or spelling it wrong causes that feeling, It's like if someone said your name wrong, that affects you because your name gives you your identity, but you became aware of it so everything is fine.

I agree with all of your points, except that tacos and burritos actually are Mexican cuisine.
Stereotypes go both ways though, a lot of people have some pretty negative stereotypical beliefs about Americans and the US, that just aren’t correct, including many Colombians I’ve met.
I’m glad that you didn’t bring up use of the word “American” as meaning “of the USA” in English. That’s something many Colombians wrongly interpret as some weird form of liguistic imperialism. They don’t realize that the English translation of “estadounidense” is literally “American”. You were obviously raised in the US or Canada or spent many years in North America so I’m sure you understand that.
Ironically most Colombians I know, including my wife and her family, just use “Americano”. Also, on my Colombian-born daughter’s registro civil, my nationality is written “Americano”. I refer to myself as estadounidense though, just to avoid any drama with strangers.

Tacos are NOT Americanized Mexican food! In general Mexicans *love* tacos, and why not? They`re varied, delicious, inexpensive and fun to eat. That said, it is deeply offensive to paisas in particular even to *mention* that pendejo Escobar. Don`t even think of taking one of those awful "Pablo Escobar Tours." That`s disgusting. Also never, never, never ask where you can buy cocaine! The paisas might just say "Al demonio" to you in a trice.
