My favorite allen key moment ever was Bernard Hinault descending, I believe it was the Col d'Izoard on the way to the stage finish on the Col du Grannon in the 86 Tour. Flying down the hill at close to 60 mph with his mechanic adjusting his saddle while leaning out of the window. If it wasn't the Izoard it was the Col du Vars. That was his last day in yellow. His old nemesis, tendonitis, flared up and required a saddle adjustment.

It's just the pinch bolts. The compression bung and top cap are still there to hold it together. And he's doing it on perfect tarmac with no one in front. I'm guessing these bolts came loose because the mechanic doesn't want to over torque them because the steerer is carbon. Some thread locker is perhaps what is needed to keep them from coming loose.

it's normal when your wages are on the line, wait untill you have to tighten your crank arm whilst racing....now that's a challenge, well it was for me as the roads we were racing on became very bendy shall we say

I had to do that in a race. No support car. Got a 5mm wrench handup from friend on the sideline.

I'd tighten my stem with an allen wrench a thousand times before being a bike mechanic and hanging out the window to work on the brakes at speed.

I don't think it would take extreme daring or special skills to tighten your stem bolts that hold it to the steerer, pretty confident I could do this while riding. The more dangerous part looks like grabbing it from the car. What would be kind of crazy is if this were an older style quill stem and you were adjusting the height while riding.

How about the mechanic in the back seat in a moving car during the TDF fixing a derailleur with one bad move causing s loss of a finger or two.

Yeah. Not at Home, because, in a stationary trainer, the bike is quite instable, as the front wheel doesn't spin.

Shows how much the commentators know. He’s not adjusting the stem. He’s tightening the stem clamp bolts. What’s more dangerous? Riding with a loose stem or giving the bolts a turn with an allen key? I’d take this option 10 out of 10 times.
