i'm on my 3rd harley. i bought my 1st harley based on money. it was a 2006 1200 sporty, with 125 miles on it, and was $10,000 in 2008. i thought i got a deal.
my 2nd was a 2007 softail custom 96cid 6 sp, traded the sporty and paid more. while i was crowded in the sporty, and had more room on the custom, i was disappointed.
my current is the 2012 fatboy 103b. i love this bike. i bought all 3 from the same used vehicle dealer.
yes, money is a factor, but at 6'5 i feel crowded on many bikes. everybody has an opinion, in one ear, out the other.
model does make a difference. personally i see hard bags, a trunk, shin guards, and a big faring as a grandpa ride.
yes, i like a windscreen, makes it easier to hold on, tends to keep bugs, rocks, and other debris off the body, and face.
for me buying used allows me to feel better about my purchase. i do not lose the drive off the lot money crash.
the last 2 bikes have had the v&h big radius, with a dynajet setup. this means i saved money. they had a windscreen, and a backrest.
color can be a tough thing when buying used. once i find a bike i like, that i feel comfortable on, and is in my price range, with my preferred exhaust.
there may only be the one bike, or there may be 2 or 3 bikes, but they are different yr models, different mileage, and different colors.
may of 2020 i had 2 choices, once i found a nice fit, a 2007 96cid, 6sp, 16,000miles pearl white fatboy $14,000.
or the one i'm on, a 2012 103bcid, 6sp, 17,500miles $12,900 in tequila sunrise orange. brand new sold for $17,225 pure stock.
it had a shift into neutral issue when i bought it, but changing the transmission oil solved that issue.
it is a repo bike, and it had been down, the dealer replaced the rear fender, the right floorboard is skinned up, as are the tips of the exhaust.
the engine guard did it's job, and i'm guessing who ever crashed it, had leather saddle bags on it.
this bike runs like a champ, and i've had no real issues with it. it now has 29,000 miles on it. i've serviced it every winter, and put new tires on it in 2022.

Great video mate. I know that when i brought my first Harley, i went to a few dealerships and most were very forthcoming to taking different bikes for rides. Riding lots of bikes and then speaking to people who also rode certain bikes was great feedback. I found most riders were happy to give an honest opinion about each bike. At the end of the day it really came down to the way it rode, looked and made me feel. Its a personal choice....go with your gut instinct and do what makes you happy! 😎

Excellent Aymen as always. Regarding the Peer pressure thing, I've seen other riders trying to compete with each other by having the latest models and upgrades. To me it always looks lame. My opinion is stick with what YOU want and like, and then your bike will most likely stand out from the others. Also you will probably have spend less money by not being so competitive.

On my 10th new Harley(RG CVO ST) and agree with all your points. If buying new, would recommend getting the bike that is closest to your vision of your ideal build. Spending thousands of extra dollars on modifications, possibly voiding your warranty, and getting almost nothing back money wise when trading or selling the bike for those mods seems like good ways to make your ownership experience less enjoyable. The bikes are only worth what the vin plate states it is but making the best individual choices make our riding experiences priceless.

I chose the perfect motorcycle, it's an Indian Springfield. Just joking, I always thought I'd get a Road King and still like them but man the Indian was just a better ride, plus it already had stage 2 upgrades.

Great video which really helps a rider with their choices before choosing that ideal model best suited for themself.
Throughout my riding history I have owned several cruisers and touring bikes and found my Harley-Davidson Road King is the ultimate ride for me on so many levels. When inclined I can leisurely putt around or suddenly switch to burning asphalt with relentless wind in my face.
The Road King has timeless, nostalgic design, coupled with modern day reliability and performance, minus the bells and whistles. I don't need or care to have the "extras," or the unnecessary, to capture my zenith riding experiences.
My Road King ended my motorcycling quest for change in models. The term "Keeper," is an understatement as I don't foresee parting with my Road King.

I can say that over many years and $$$ spending big on aftermarket you need to be prepared to take a $$$ hit.

I got the lowrider s, because i love it. and funny thing is how many loaded compliments i get from other harley riders. like: "I mean yea, until you are ready for a bigger bike, that is a great bike" or "yea, I mean if I couldn't afford my street glide, I would totally rock a lowrider s" oooooh harley people.

Do not, I repeat do not buy an early model M8! Unless the owner can prove to you that he immediately upon purchasing new upgraded the oil pump. I have a 2019 ultra limited 114 that has 50,000 miles on it and now is getting a complete engine replacement due to oil failure over time. And this bike has been meticulously maintained over the miles.. Fortunately, I bought the extended warranty.

@@OldNotDead-Club yes. The stock/original oil pump was insufficient in its ability to provide enough lubrication to prevent scarring of all the bearing surfaces, but not so insufficient to cause an immediate catastrophic event. This caused premature wear of the internal engine parts.
Upon inspection the crankshaft end play was way past spec and the crankshaft was actual out of round. The camshaft lobes, lifters, cylinder walls and rocker arms all had major scoring. The rear cylinder “passed” the leak down test at a HD spec of 80%, don’t really agree that’s a spec to be proud of, and the front failed at 72%.
History
During the first 90 days of ownership it transferred transmission oil into the primary to a point of reducing the clutch friction zone down to a minuscule slice of the normal amount. It did this during a 4 hour ride in a pouring rain storm on our Highway 1 of the California north coast. I initiated a U-turn with a ditch to the right and the mountain drop off, no guard rail , to the left, on Highway 1, so about 50’ of wet roadway, with the wife on the back and all 3 bags full, and when I went to use the friction zone it was almost non existent. I’m a retired law enforcement motor officer, I’ve made this turn in much less room on a police HD hundreds and hundreds of times. I caught it with the rear brake, re-established the friction zone and finished the u-turn. So instead of having half of the lane to finish the turn we ended up right next to the edge of the road way/ mountain drop off. Took it to the dealership and they installed the transmission vent, which didn’t fix the problem.
This engine exhibited signs of sumping during the first 90 days of ownership, and continued on occasions, yet when it was inspected it passed with “not enough oil in the sensor” remarks from the HD tech. And then it would sump again . Sumping occurred during extended high RPM use. As did the transmission oil transfer.
At around 20K miles 3 lifers had failed.
At about 30K miles it had a major smoking event. It looked like a crop duster going down our Interstate 5 here in California. I noticed the smoke when I checked my mirrors, going about 90mph, and there was so much smoke it was clouding the entire 4 lane interstate. I was only a couple miles from the dealership so I rode straight in, filled up their service department with smoke, and noticed oil coming out of both exhausts. Tech blamed “bad fuel” and they literally tried to charge me a diagnostic fee!
So over the miles I noticed it was consistently using more oil in between the 5K service, which I performed in my own shop. This engine was meticulously maintained with SE Syn3 Oil, HD Formula + (primary) and HD Heavy Synthetic Gear Oil (transmission) with all three being changed every 5K miles.
At 40K miles it was using almost 2 quarts of engine oil and transferring enough transmission oil into the primary to reduce the friction zone. I contacted HD corporate and it took them another 10K miles to figure out what they wanted to try to fix the transmission problem. So while it was in the dealership I had them check the engine and they found the damage.
The original dealership was Eaglesnest in Lathrop Ca.. I switched locations to East Bay HD in Livermore Ca.. Ironically both are owned by the same person, but it seems the service department at East Bay is more knowledgeable.
Now for the luck the ass. HD corporate took 89 days to recommend the fix on the transmission. With the parts order time the bike will be in the dealership for at least six months.
I ride as my primary form of transportation and for fun on my days off, so about 18K miles per year. Fortunately I have a 2008 Suzuki Bandit 1250, that runs perfectly, in fact with the mods it’s a proper hooligan bike 😈.
I’ll probably keep the HD, it will have a brand new engine 🤦. I’m having the upgraded SE oil pump installed in the new engine, or maybe use that as a selling point. I’m looking at about $3k in suspension upgrades to get it to be tolerable, so I’m still undecided.
In the end, nobody should ever buy an early model M8 , unless the seller can prove the oil pump was upgraded at the time of purchase. Supposedly the 2021’s had the oil pump upgraded???
@@distancejunkiemonkey4491 Wow, sorry to hear that - that's very unfortunate. I had one of the first M8's no problems but it had extensive engine work from day one. Then the bike I have now has the upgraded pump (late 2019 onward i believe)
bikes have two categories, nibble and quick or comfortable. if all you want is a bar hopper, you dont want a big long-distance, comfortable ride.

Very useful information for a novice harley Rider's I've been riding a a 14 street glide for 3 hrs now and it suits my riding style I ride long distances when my job and wife's permission 😂 my rides consist of 1000 mile juants so I need comfort and at over 6ft that's not easy 😂if want a harley go and try one at a demo day or just take one for a demo from a stealership you will know if the bikes right listen to your body not your heart if it feels right it probably is but don't go with with a budget that you can afford not what the dealer says you can it's better to buy older and have more money to spend on the bike than break your bank

Those 2024 have all kinds of nasty issues. I believe in keeping it simple and get a good base of what you like. Make it your own by customizing.

Too many harleys getting defected in Adelaide now even for standard handlebars from the factory : if u have a harley and u get pulled over good luck getting away with it : not worth owning here anymore ive gone back to sports bikes
