Most of us know what Blue chip art is but have any of us actually heard of Red Chip Art? Probably not, it's a new term, and I'm not sure it will actually be universally adopted. I hadn't heard either until I listened to a favorite podcast of mine, Art Tactic. On this episode Scott Rayburn a writer for Art Newspaper spoke about the differences between the two and the concerns he has among Red Chip Art.

In my experience the ppl that you define as a casual and an art enthusiast would be hesitant to even accept the label of art collector. It seems to me that even the term art collector is kind of a pejorative until you start hitting a certain dollar value for the work; at least from an art world perspective. We need another term...perhaps patron to describe most middle class people's participation in acquiring art. I have a lot of art. Most very serious pieces, however I have still had galleries refuse to sell work to me since I don't have a reputation as a collector...and for other reasons perhaps.

Nice information. I agree with you that Amy Sherald is not Red but Blue Chip. She is represented by a top gallery, acquired by major museums and collectors, and she does not produce a lot of work. So the value on the primary market stays high and when her work appears on the auction market it our performs the estimate because it doesn’t happen often.
