What's up Glorifiers! I'm Moriah Alise, and this is another Dear Glory Conversation. Join us for an inspiring chat with Demetrius Wilson, an artist who paints the dance of emotions and the invisible threads connecting abstract art with lifelike figures.
Today, we're diving into Wilson's key role in the "In Tender Peaks, Grace Unfolds" group exhibition, featuring talents like Megan Lewis and Crystal Yayra Anthony, presented by Mitochondria Gallery right here in Houston, Texas.
Wilson's creations, "Watch from Afar" and "Flash," painted in 2023, have captivated hearts to the point of finding new homes-one of which I'll happily visit myself! With his recent spotlight in ARTSY as one of the emerging Black artists to watch, and his ongoing collaboration with Harpers Books, it's clear: Demetrius is a name to remember.
Born in Boston and now a force in New York City's art scene, Demetrius is internationally known, with shows from Rome to the Big Apple. His latest solo, "Begin the End," is making waves, and his commission for Houston's biggest airport is a soaring testament to his talent.
Demetrius's art is a dynamic fusion of bold strokes and poignant figures, challenging the conventions of black abstract art. Our conversation peels back the layers of his process, from the integrity of art collecting to embracing Rashid Johnson's approach of didactic art, where questions hold more power than answers.
In this episode, we're not just talking art-we're experiencing it. We'll share the installation video of the exhibition, and trust me, you don't want to miss it. And for the art lovers and learners alike, hit subscribe and support our channel. Your clicks and tips fuel our passion to bring the art world to you.
So, let's settle in for a journey through memory, identity, and the beauty of abstract storytelling with Demetrius Wilson. Stay tuned!
This exhibition invites a conversation about the transformative power of grace in fostering personal growth and understanding. It's an ode to our ability to uncover grace and beauty amidst the turmoil of our lives, offering attendees a moment to reflect on their own resilience.
Mitochondria Gallery Presents
Exhibition Title: In Tender Peaks, Grace Unfolds
Curator: Moriah Alise
Date: February 16, 2024 - March 15, 2024
Location: Mitochondria Gallery, 2220 Commerce Street, #D, Houston, TX 77002
Time: 7-9 PM
-
Taking on the role of curator for "In Tender Peaks, Grace Unfolds" has been a profound chapter in my journey. The opportunity provided by Mitochondria Gallery has reignited my passion for curation, a field that had taken a backseat in my career focused on artist management and art business education. This experience has been a blend of excitement, slight nerves, and immense anticipation. The faith that the artists and the gallery have placed in me to bring these narratives to life is both humbling and exhilarating.
This exhibition is deeply personal, exploring the notion that within the tender moments of our existence-the peaks of vulnerability and significance-lies the potential for grace to reveal its most beautiful aspects. Through the lens of personal experiences, family, and friends, we've delved into how grace unfolds at the emotional heights of life, manifesting as inner strength, a fresh perspective, or a silent resilience in the face of life's trials.
As the curator of "In Tender Peaks, Grace Unfolds," I invite you to join us at Mitochondria Gallery to engage with this remarkable collection. If you're interested in discussing or collecting any of the works, please don't hesitate to reach out to me at info@aliseartgroup.com or contact Mitochondria Gallery at info@mitochondriagallery.com. I'm eager for you to experience the profound emotional and artistic journeys that this exhibition offers. Together, let's explore the landscapes of grace and resilience that shape our lives.

The way I see it a collection is your language and having different styles to present to a gallery is like speaking different languages in a sentence, it just won’t make sense and they won’t understand it.

Great video but pigeonholing is a bit constraining as collecting and the Art world is a journey and one may or may not shift their position at any given time, I know I have. Being too rigid in one aspect can be ok but also limiting in another and closing one off from the benefits of another. I have been collecting and researching Art for 20+ years and find that to benefit the most from collecting etc... one may want to experience and immerse oneself in any avenue of the art world and find one's place or starting point. Even trying or becoming an Artist, I did just that.

Americans always love to divide and make issues where there is none. Sad.

More to the point regarding artists being able to talk about their individual works and/or a collection or series of works: If you aren't able to coherently and honestly speak about your work why should a gallerist, curator want to feature/represent you? Even more importantly, why would anyone want to buy it if as the artist you don't know why you're creating your work or series... As a curator it can be annoying to get a clear narrative about an aritst's works I'm really drawn to if the artist isn't able to talk about their own work let alone their aesthetic and process. As Moriah stated, not talking about your work in an arrogant way. Also not in a way that's all fluff, BS or that totally misses the mark of your narrative is and what your art "says" visually. Emerging, "unknown", unrepresented and uncollected artists who are pricing their work at unrealistic prices (i.e. $25K, $50K+...) especially with the reasoning of "Well, one day someone may buy it for that price, so why not?" will instantly be dismissed by curators, gallerists, agents and patrons.

The high-end art market game is kind of like fantasy big-time wrestling nothing is what it seems and quite often is rigged and in between the market holders, brokers, auction houses, and the like hype is eagerly pumping up the buyers, collectors, and investors for the next round. It's all an Illusion that's why Art, especially contemporary art prices are out of control. As an Art Collector and researcher of 20+ years and with over 200 works of art in my collection. I am not too excited about and with the contemporary art world and market these days I am hoping there will be a major shift in the market and artist's creations in the future. But to each their own, Art collecting is a very subjective personal activity that collectors want to share with others but when money status and name notoriety come into play the artist's creations may end up and tend to be degraded as so many artworks are today utterly rubbish.
