    Home mechanic tip. Use synthetic brake grease. A small tube costs maybe four to five dollars and it will last you a long time. There are several brands. i imagine all are good. A secondary use is as a thread lube and anti sieze but be sparing. I have even used it to lubricate squeaky door hinges inside the house.

    He should have been more thorough. One person already mentioned the pumping of the brakes. Did not clean off the exposed area of piston before compression, One of the caliper guide pins was actually missing a rubber grommet near the end of the pin (you could clearly see the notch that it was to go in). It would have been better to use a special brake spreader tool or a C-clamp and brake pad to compress the piston as this is much less likely to damage the piston or the the boot than channel lock type pliers. He forgot to mention that only silicone based brake grease should be used on the pins, because other types can damage rubber parts. same with the plate pad plate that sits against the piston.

    I have a 2000 Toyota Camry LE and I've noticed that my rear brakes are making noise at night sometimes. The noise isn't too loud and it's only there for like a minute or two and then it goes away.. Could it be time to replace the rear brakes? Should I just replace it anyway?

    No use the old brake pad with a good size C-Clamp to push piston in brake calipers back in. Also crack brake master cylinder cap so pressure is released. Place a rag around the master cylinder as to not get brake fluid on other components near by. Recheck level after everting is installed.

    • @davea5150
      @davea5150 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A pair of slip joint pliers will most likely harder to get the piston back in the caliper plus you chance buggering up the piston with the jaw of the pliers.

  • @whiteknightcat
    @whiteknightcat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This video left off an important preparatory step. The cap must be removed from the brake fluid reservoir to allow the fluid to rise when the first caliper piston is compressed. If the brake pedal is not depressed to seat the first set of pads after installation, excess fluid will need to be suctioned out of the reservoir before the next set is installed or the fluid will overflow, damaging any exposed paint in the process.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +whiteknightcat Yes, thank you for sharing those excellent tips, every mechanic is slightly different in the way they work. As long as you clean up spilled brake fluid right away it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Thanks for watching!

    • @Renulph
      @Renulph 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1AAuto So just take the cap off and it won't overflow? Is that what I'm understanding here?

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lodey It shouldn't overflow. Just be sure to check the level before you start to see if it will be a concern, but as long as you never topped it off in between brake jobs there should not be enough fluid in there to overflow. 1aauto.com

    • @whiteknightcat
      @whiteknightcat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Renulph Here's an example - I just replaced the front pads on a friend's Nissan Frontier. They're very similar to the Toyotas. I removed the reservoir cap and noted the level. When I got to the point where I compressed the piston(s) on the first side, I had him watch the fluid level. It rose and I stopped compressing just as it was about to overflow. I then knew to suction out a sufficient amount of fluid so that when I compressed the next piston(s), the remaining fluid would also not overflow.
      If I hadn't done that, the fluid would have ended up pressurized in the system and would have made compressing the pistons very difficult. Opening the reservoir cap with the fluid under pressure might also have resulted in the fluid blowing out as the cap was removed.

    You didn’t mention anything about the brake disc clips that hold the brake pads apart before you put on the caliper. I put them on anyway, but were they not needed? What do they do?

  • @TheBoss-ie8dj
    @TheBoss-ie8dj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I just changed mine on a 99. I didnt see where you installed the 2 torsion springs on each side. The holes the springs go into are on the pads. Looks like the torsion springs just help spread apart the pads when pressure is not being applied.

    • @brianvu648
      @brianvu648 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 1999 also. About to try and do my first rotor + brake change (upgrading to EBC Level 5 brake kit). What's this Torsion Spring I should be aware of?

    • @TheBoss-ie8dj
      @TheBoss-ie8dj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe they are not torsion but it's the "L" shaped springs that can come with the pads. They hold the pads away from the rotor when the brakes are not applied.

    The rubber seal was missing from the end of the first caliper pin that was pulled out at 8:07. One pin has a seal, the other doesn't, and the one with the seal fits in only one of the two slide bores.

    • @1AAuto

      @stacybarnes1789 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      1A Auto Parts finally got all the air and old brake fluid out. I did not expect to go thru 3 bottles of brake fluid . I had spongy brake pedal so I had changed out my master cylinder so I had to pump my brake pedal for 8 minutes until I built up enough pressure to get my pedal tight.

      1. The easiest and safest method after taking off the caliper and bracket, put the tire back on with a couple spaced out lug nuts.
      Then, kick the wheel (or tire) a few times until it breaks loose.
      2. If you are replacing the rotor, another option is to hit it on the "hat" between the lug studs with a ball peen hammer. (Or a small sledgehammer)
      This will distort the metal of the rotor hat, and break it away from the rust on the hub.
      Don't hit and damage any of the studs. Which makes 1 above safer.

      Mine was stuck too and a hammer got it off. Sometimes force is all you need.

    LOL "You will need 14mm and 17mm socket."
    Step 1: Use a 21mm socket...

    What kind of grease do you use for the Caliper bolts? I was reading some comments for this: www.amazon.com/Permatex-85188-Ultra-Brake-Caliper/dp/B004WJPN2A/ and heard this would be bad for Toyota parts and that toyota recommends using lithium soap based glycol grease so that the rubbers don't swell?

      +Brian Vu Typically you can use a caliper pin grease to quiet them down. If Toyota recommends a different product, you may want to use what they recommend.
