I've always been wary of retail mode workarounds like that, since it seems to be exploiting the beta program or whatever MS has setup for testing things.
@@davetech356 way less difficult than setting up RetroArch. I'd love to see other emulators get ported. Imagine Cemu being ported over. However correct me if I'm wrong, but the Xbox Series doesn't support Vulkan and since Cemu doesn't support DirectX it would make that port far harder (and honestly not worth the trouble for most devs)
There is OGL support on Xboxes, but it's VERY limited and honestly even DX11 is better, let alone DX12. What would be really interesting is a port of RPCS3. Older versions had DX12 support which was dropped to simplify things, but if someone cared enough they could in theory port it to UWP. Can you imagine how funny it would be for Xbox to support PS3 emulation before PS5 does?
@Kirby0Louise Yeah, issue with OpenGL is its really slow so therefore wouldn't be ideal. True, they could add back DX12 to RPCS3 however there have been so many updates and DX12 was always worse than Vulkan that it would still be a massive undertaking.

@@jemiebridges3197 nope, that's the thing the input from wii mote can't be recognized by the Xbox. I don't know if someone will create some hacky way of doing so, just like adding gyro to Xbox controller was invented, but until then we can only hope for Microsoft's official support of the Wii mote.

Tried Retroarch in Windows for the first time yesterday and was hugely disappointed. As you said: massively convoluted front end, and plenty of other issues too (whoever thought it was a good idea to also capture the UI when taking screenshots of games needs their head examining). It might work well on a Raspberry Pi, or other devices, but in Windows you're much better off using individual emulators, which is what I do.
Every time I see someone using the Dolphin Emulator it makes me want to pack away my Game Cube for good. The resolution, framerate and general experience just seem so much better.
I've tried this in the past. In the end, nothing beat the physical experience of pushing the power button and hearing the GameCube boot up. I feel like the medium is often overlooked. It's part of the experience!
@@cakeisamadeupdrug6134 That doesn't change anything for the GameCube. You can run PAL games at 60 Hz 480p through Swiss. Anything older, however, is indeed borderline unplayable on original hardware without using NTSC roms on a flashcart.
Wow didn't even think of this, I have the tmnt 4 player arcade 1up + the street fighter 2 one, would be insane to get the series s working with the 4 player joysticks
When i used RetroArch to play Wind Waker, using the PictoBox to take pictures would cause the game to crash on me. It wasn't a huge deal but i was trying to get all the heart containers and i needed to get one piece of heart using a treasure map that i would get from completing the PictoBox submission. Hopefully this stand alone Dolphin emulator fixes that problem, cause i did have a great time playing Wind Waker on the Xbox
The Pictobox requires efb2ram instead of efb2texture only or however the settings are called these days. And it needs cpu efb access. If any of those 2 settings is wrong, the game crashes when you try to use the Pictobox. On regular Dolphin, there are game specific ini files provided that automatically enable those 2 features for the game. It's possible that RetroArch doesn't ship with those files, maybe even intentionally, because those 2 settings might cost you 50% of the performance in this game. The performance loss is likely not an issue on a series s, but one a xbox one x, the game might even be playable with the hacks, but certainly not with them disabled. Protip: If this works, create yourself a hotkey that switches those 2 settings, because switching them on the fly should be stable. Well, if you switch them before trying to take a picture.
Sucks so bad you can't configure the controls without needing to go through the windows process. The emulator is awesome!! But the controls are my ONLY issue. I'm an idiot with computers, so even following guides; I'm somehow incapable of setting up the controls. So no matter how badly I want to use this, I'll have to wait for controller configuration to be added to Xbox dolphin itself. Retroarch has always been extremely complicated for me. So this is great for a noob like me. Hopefully soon I'll get to use this
Retail mode has 3 main advantages: 1. You won't need to swap between retail and dev modes 2. Xbox console can be future proof with all emus running forever 3. Crashes just send you to the main menu instead of dev menu or freezing
I do like retroarch but yeah, I run into issues with ps2/dreamcast/wii sometimes within it on my xsx. I mainly use the flycast & xbsx2 ports now for dreamcast & ps2. I wonder if cemu will get a xbox series port eventually being it is open source now.
This is good news, if only because it gives an alternative to the RA platform. (I'd suggest looking in to the emulation scene as to why RA is in poor favour, overall. The fewer people that use it, the better in my honest opinion.) The improvements are impressive, and I'm pleased to see emulation on consoles is getting even better, which is wild to me.
Does the Xbox Series X provide any additional power that could be used by the emulator for more advanced features? I have an X and I'm just curious about it.
Perhaps if/when 4k is enabled on the emulator? I bet you could crank everything up to max in the settings and have a pretty darn good time. Keep in mind the emulator is pretty early on right now so things like 4k just aren't enabled right now.
Here you must keep in mind that some of the games doesn't support really well full 4k so generally we tend to select 1440p. It's an awesome middle ground between excellent performance and sharp visuals. Edit: and I'm also on series x
How do you get updates on stuff like this? I've tried to google around to figure out what emulators are available for Xbox through UWP but I was unable to find any good reliable sources.
Tons of commercial game releases use emulation now. Konami collections, Atari 50, Arcade Archives. You just have to actually pay who owns the rights for the game.
@@voteDC Don't forget DMCA interoperability exemptions. It is strictly legal to bypass all manner of copyright and protection in order to enable running software on another system
The one thing I wish they add to RetroArch is a GUI for controller mapping. Having a visual representation of what buttons are being mapped would help me tremendously. No second guessing if I'm mapping the right buttons or not.
i would seriously recommend using an external USB 3.0/3.1 SSD instead of a flash drive. you get much faster load times, and if you want to use hd texture packs, you will absolutely need them to be running off a fast drive since UWP apps are limited to 5GB of ram
the retroarch UI is absolutely horrible, i agree. to me it's unusable, especially with its mobile style front end. not sure if there are plug-ins to get a better front end or something. i prefer to setup specific emulators.
Switch to the XMB UI, or the old one before that (can't remember the name) - the default UI sucks though. Once you get it set up it's pretty easy to use, you just have to remember that when doing controller setup it's using the "retro pad" which is mapped to the actual controller.
glad you added some content comparing XSS to XB1 performance. I have an old XB1 I was thinking of using for this and will now not bother until I have a dedicated XSS emulation console
Not sure why it's known to be like that. My old gaming laptop with 8750H and 1050Ti can run it perfectly, and IIRC so are iPhones (or at least I remember it running well on tbe iPhone 11 and DolphiniOS. I might misremembered it though, so take the iPhone claim with a grain of salt).
Is it better to use an XSX rather than an XSS for emulation, if you want to max out settings? Or does everything max out well with no need for further headroom on the XSS?
Not really. Their CPUs are almost identical so emulation will be practically identical unless it becomes GPU limited like raising the internal resolution past a certain point
@@crestofhonor2349 Thanks man, I really appreciate your response. I've been meaning to try emulating Ridge Racer Type 4 and others. Thank you for your comment. I'm glad the one X runs this nicely. I'm going to try it myself this week.
I can't wait for the Dolphin Development Progress Report that accompanies this release!
Huge step forward for dolphin. Looking forward to loading up my GCN library unto my XSX.
Thanks for adding on the One X clip at the end. It's what I'm currently using it on and was wondering if I was doing something wrong but it seems it's just not able to keep up. I'll revisit once I get around to buying a Series console. Thanks MVG
I know you're not a fan but thanks for mentioning the retail mode, for people that use their xbox daily for everything it's a much more seamless option.
I've always been wary of retail mode workarounds like that, since it seems to be exploiting the beta program or whatever MS has setup for testing things.
Just did the retail install can’t wait to blow my friends minds when I load up double dash split screen
Been using this since it came out. It works great! Only thing I use my xbox for right now. Thanks for the video
Did you find set-up difficult?
@@davetech356 way less difficult than setting up RetroArch.
Here (if you use USB on retail mode like me) I just configured my USB drive with a tool called Xbox media USB to format and give permissions needed by dolphin and did what MVG did here.
Since I already replayed through Metroid prime, starfox adventures entirely without an itch.
@@atomickid ok thanks
Fantastic video, MVG!
This is true
@Kirby0Louise Yeah, issue with OpenGL is its really slow so therefore wouldn't be ideal.
True, they could add back DX12 to RPCS3 however there have been so many updates and DX12 was always worse than Vulkan that it would still be a massive undertaking.
what about xenia because it supports dx12
@m That would be kinda pointless tho. As the Xbox Series already has a superior Xbox Emulator.
LOL! Im so glad you mentioned that retoarch is its own enemy!
I wonder if they ever get dolphin bar working on Xbox, I know that wii mote can't be connected to xbox, but maybe with some dongle from china we could technically get it working and in the end we could just not have to have any wii laying around for even motion control games.
can the wii mote work without a sensor bar? I'm pretty sure it works with candles in the right position and other crazy non powered hack for those of us whose sensor bar has just died.
@@jemiebridges3197 Sure but the problem is the xbox can't connect the wiimote via bluetooth, like other gamepads.
Glad to see you back at it!!
MVG, amazing content as always. Thank you for this. I bassically alsways trying to add emulators in avery device I have (just wan to do it and I still have the original hardware of said emulators. Haha). Man, I hope you can talk abou some day (when you can, no rush) about the PS2, FreeMCBoot and the internal hardisk adapters. The details and history should be amazing.
Still not getting a modern Xbox. Already have a Wii WiiDUAL HDMI modded too.
I have Retroarch running around 40 consoles fine on Series X, it's not for casuals that's for sure.
If it's a good front end you want, I highly recommend Launchbox or Playnight
@@sketchpen777 Steam + EmuDeck
Amazing with new big picture mode
Great video, MVG. Recently picked up a second Series S on the cheap so I'll be making it a dedicated emulation box!
@@Anthestudios OK but counterpoint: all of my consoles are PAL
@@cakeisamadeupdrug6134 That doesn't change anything for the GameCube. You can run PAL games at 60 Hz 480p through Swiss. Anything older, however, is indeed borderline unplayable on original hardware without using NTSC roms on a flashcart.
This is good progress! Thanks for covering it
Really close to buying one of these, but it would be nice to have a front end similar to Launchbox that would display boxart and such.
Man it would awesome to just dump an XBox One S inside an Arcade1Up cab and put Launch box on it then connect all the sticks.
Wow didn't even think of this, I have the tmnt 4 player arcade 1up + the street fighter 2 one, would be insane to get the series s working with the 4 player joysticks
Awesome! I'll be setting this up later today, thank you. F-Zero here we go!
@@mimi8505 thanks for the info fellow gamer i appreciate your assistance
Looks excellent! Cant wait to try this out :)
Hopefully soon I'll get to use this
2 videos in only a few days, he's back!
For One X users: he talks about performance at around 8:45
Now that Cemu is open source we need to see it ported over to the Series consoles too!
Cemu performance on a Series should be a cake walk hopefully
Had trouble getting Dolphin working right with retroarch on series x, going to give this a go! Edit - got it working and seems to doing a great job!
good luck i just try doing it on my series x in retail mode and all i got was a black screen
@@75edainsworth are you using a USB? It has to be formatted correctly, there's instructions on the discord
@@75edainsworth You have to format the USB in a specific way and give some permissions
You should paint the Series S purple and attach a handle.
0:28 Yay, you pronounced it RetroArch same as me, instead of RetroArc, since the Arch part is short for Architecture like most people pronounce it.
I gotta get me one of those consoles. So cool.
Retail mode has 3 main advantages:
1. You won't need to swap between retail and dev modes
2. Xbox console can be future proof with all emus running forever
3. Crashes just send you to the main menu instead of dev menu or freezing
What is the difference between internal and a USB? Will the shaders compile quicker or is it more conplicated.
The folder structure on the internal drive is complicated, lots of folders and stuff
SO HYPE! The very first shot opens with the BEST GC GAME EVER!
I do like retroarch but yeah, I run into issues with ps2/dreamcast/wii sometimes within it on my xsx. I mainly use the flycast & xbsx2 ports now for dreamcast & ps2. I wonder if cemu will get a xbox series port eventually being it is open source now.
Speaking from PC experience, the PS2 core in RetroArch is way behind and still experimental with known problems. So it won't be good und XBox either.
This is good news, if only because it gives an alternative to the RA platform. (I'd suggest looking in to the emulation scene as to why RA is in poor favour, overall. The fewer people that use it, the better in my honest opinion.)
The improvements are impressive, and I'm pleased to see emulation on consoles is getting even better, which is wild to me.
Does the Xbox Series X provide any additional power that could be used by the emulator for more advanced features? I have an X and I'm just curious about it.
Yes
Edit: not sure about features but performance for sure.
Came here to ask the same thing. I don’t know enough about the differences to know what factors the hardware influences.
Perhaps if/when 4k is enabled on the emulator? I bet you could crank everything up to max in the settings and have a pretty darn good time. Keep in mind the emulator is pretty early on right now so things like 4k just aren't enabled right now.
@@jmholmes83 X has a 200MHz faster CPU, 2.5x memory bandwidth and 3x GPU compute compared to S
Literally was gonna do this today, had the guides saved lol
Imagine what is possible if emulation wasn't in a grey area and console makers would support it
Emulation isn't a grey area, it is perfectly legal (we have Sony to thank for proving that). What is 'grey' is how the games are acquired.
Tons of commercial game releases use emulation now. Konami collections, Atari 50, Arcade Archives. You just have to actually pay who owns the rights for the game.
They do support it, just not how you want them to lol. How do you think e.g. playing retro games via NSO works?
@@voteDC Don't forget DMCA interoperability exemptions. It is strictly legal to bypass all manner of copyright and protection in order to enable running software on another system
Original Xbox and Xbox 360 support on the Series systems are using emulation to get those games running.
Love Dolphin. First used it on the Mac and that is the only reason I built a gaming PC to later use Dolphin on my newly built Windows PC.
Very true, preloading multiple GB of hd texture packs on a USB can end up not working cause of no available RAM, and the game won't launch
Man it's a good morning when MVG uploads!
Thanks for video!
I'm waiting for bluetooth support in this Dolphin for play using Wiimotes
the retroarch UI is absolutely horrible, i agree. to me it's unusable, especially with its mobile style front end. not sure if there are plug-ins to get a better front end or something. i prefer to setup specific emulators.
I have an old XB1 I was thinking of using for this and will now not bother until I have a dedicated XSS emulation
console
Curious about how the fire stages in F-Zero GX runs. They are notorious for not running perfect on pretty much any hardware.
Would you consider releasing a tutorial video on setting up an xbox one S with all the fixings/emulators?
Is it better to use an XSX rather than an XSS for emulation, if you want to max out settings? Or does everything max out well with no need for further headroom on the XSS?
Not really. Their CPUs are almost identical so emulation will be practically identical unless it becomes GPU limited like raising the internal resolution past a certain point
@@crestofhonor2349 Thanks man, I really appreciate your response. I've been meaning to try emulating Ridge Racer Type 4 and others. I have the originals but R4 is a blurry mess by today's standards, so was wondering whether to buy an XSX or XSS. Are you saying the XSS could upscale to 1080p no problem, but might struggle upscale to 4K? I've seen programs like DuckStation can offer things like that. Cheers 🍻

After XBSX2 & Dolphin emulators, hopefully Vita3K emulator (PS Vita) would be next so that we could play Soul Sacrifice, Killzone Mercenary, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax & other games that have never been ported to Xbox consoles. For Cemu & Yuzu / Ryujinx emulators, better to beta-test those in secret.

To be fair the series s is good because of these things it can do. I used to hate it for various reasons but I can’t argue it’s good for the price.

Thank you for this. My Xbox has just been an MCC box for far too long lol
You got me excited, I thought this video was going to be on Dolphin running on a modded OG Xbox.
Me too, lol.
A weird thing that doesn’t work is the controls, Mario kart Wii worked fine for me. But whenever I load a GameCube I couldn’t press any button to start the game
Dolphin has officially been removed from xbox.surprised it lasted this long
These videos are going to make me buy an Xbox. All this works on the series X?
I do prefer using retroarch, since I'm familiarized with it and think it's easier to configure. Indeed it limits what you can do but for an casual gameplay I see no issues. And performance is great, 4k with minor stuttering in some games
Can you use the usb wii sensor bar for dolphin? Do wii games work in this emulator?
not yet.
Playing it in VR is even better. Looking at Metroid prime with life sized scale was mind blowing
Dam Metroid Prime is such a good game, sound design, atmosphere, art design, 60fps, animations, level design
Nice to see it get a port!
Unfortunately, the configuration seems to be a bit less convenient for playing rips than my GCLoader-Carby setup.
Hopefully by the time they sort out those issues they can add a 6x native resolution option! I’d love to try some Air Ride at 4K on my new OLED!
