This firmware rocks! I installed it on my sansa clip zip in the early 2010s and it saved me when the screen died ; it comes with easy to set up text-to-speech, so I was still able to navigate it by listening to the menus and song titles
Yup, off-camera, he was prolly singin' to that ol' iPod. "Never gonna give you up; never gonna let you down; never gonna run around & desert you..." :D
Rockbox brings back such nostalgia for me. I had it on my sandisk sansa e260, sansa fuze and sansa clip+. The fuze was IMO the best because it had the biggest screen and looked like an Ipod nano 3rd gen. I was actually blown away by how much the audio quality improved over stock firmware and there was so much more EQ customizations. With some decent headphones it sounded almost like I had a higher end music player.
Oh, RockBox. This brings back memories. I had a 1st gen iPod Nano which I flashed Rockbox on. No more iTunes was the single argument I needed, and there was so much more to fall in love with.
@11:33 applying a system-wide theme (the only logical thing to do when it comes to themes, in my opinion), should actually be done via the "Browse Theme Files option. Selecting one of the Theme files will apply _all_ aspects of the theme, including the Base Theme and the While Playing Theme.
I actually played Pokémon Crystal on my iPod nano with Rockbox a lot (ten years ago when at school) , and passed server levels on Doom1 also. Beware not getting too excited while playing Doom on iPod or playing it too much. The click pad does not designed for gaming and need repair after many harder press lol
I'll admit, "dual booting an iPod" is not a phrase I ever expected to hear. On the other hand, running Doom is the obvious next step... because EVERYTHING can run Doom, and the first thing any self-respecting nerd does after managing to run code on a device is figure out how to port Doom.
Well it is in fact dual booting an iPod because when you force restart the iPod, you use the hold switch to determine whether you want to enter OF or Rockbox
Day before TH-cam suggested a video about modding an iPod. Was never interested in iPods but somehow I was intrigued, then I figured that I dot want to deal with with iTunes and now TH-cam reminded me of how awesome was RockBox and how as a kid I used it to play Doom on a modded iRiver player :) ah, them memories
This made me recall some java based music player I used on a feature phone over a decade ago. Dude, the specific controls for that application using a numeric keypad with its particular quirks you had to learn. I recall things from back then listening to music fondly, but I absolutely do not want to go back to that kind of user interface hell to be sure.
RockBox was my jam until about 2013 when I (finally/inevitably) joined the ranks of other smartphone users. I remember using the Android port until I updated the phone and it stopped working. Still have a bunch of Sansa Clips and a Fuze+ floating around...Fun stuff.
You can easily apply a full theme system-wide (wallpapers and all) by selecting 'Browse Theme Files' in Theme Settings rather than setting WPS and Base Theme separately.
I still use my original 5th gen ipod video every day. Rockbox has been my daily driver for years now, plenty of perks. Not being tied to itunes since i run MXLinux on my pc - unlimited theme customization - all the EQ settings you could ever want. You can also set hotkeys that work when holding menu - if you set them to bass and treble you can adjust on the fly mid song. I mainly listen to saved live concerts from archive.org so being able to fine tune the levels makes for a nice listening experience. Ipod Linux was neat to check out but i feel it never felt as user friendly or complete feeling as RB
I did it on my 5.5 gen.... its sick. Apple missed out on a huge opportunity to do this themselves. FLAC on a ipod classic!!! The DAC on the 5.5 gen is great so.... no brainer
Woah I messed with Rockbox like 6 years ago on my 2g Nano. Surprised it's still alive. Last I remember, you had to install it using a command line tool?
Weird timing, because I recently ended up with a 4th gen iPod (photo). Threw in a new battery and replaced the HDD with a 128gb SD card. I'm not nostalgic at all when it comes to the iPods, but I do prefer listening to music on that instead of a phone. On a side note, you can also put linux on it, using ipodlinux.
Memories of using Rockbox 7 years ago or so with a few Sansa Clip+ mp3 players I had - never majorly liked using my phone at first for mp3 playback to save battery life
I have an iPod Classic 120GB. It is in very good condition. No scratches and works well. I use it for music playback only. I was able to install RockBox on it and a few themes I liked. I uploaded about 2000 songs on it. (I had about that many on the native). While RockBox looks pretty, it was just to slow. When I select a song, it would take 30 second to begin playing. Navigation lag was terrible. I removed RockBox, restored my iPod, and re-loaded about 5000 songs and the iPod runs seamlessly. Even though I can dual-boot, I found I would never use RockBox for the reasons above. If it was fast, it would be great because it has lots of cool themes and functionality. RockBox was more of a hassle (for me) than anything else. It was not worth it.
If you're using a 6/7 gen iPod or having an issue where the iPod fails to remount, abort the process, use the switch on top of the ipod, and keep it held until it boots into the stock os ( you may need to power cycle it by holding down menu and select until the screen goes black first, then wait for the bootloader text to start appearing on the iPod) then you reconnect it, and then right click the start button on windows (bottom left of the task bar) click disk managment, right click iPod, and assign it to a higher letter, then run the rockbox utility again
I setup rockbox on one of those tiny old Sansa mp3 players way back over a decade or so ago and even played doom on it. It was nearly impossible because the screen was so dang small... but I was able to do it.

If it has a processor
It needs a port of doom
Alright who's put a port of doom on their car? Looking at you Tesla.

Finally, my iPod Classic has a purpose.
(This is a joke, my iPod is my main music player even in 2021)
Heh.... I use a Sansa Clip I got in 2012 or so... lives permanently in my truck, hooked up to regular PC speakers.
I’m still using my 5th Gen classic too
6g classic gang. aint nobody calling me interrupting my music on one of these

I'm only 3 minutes in and I'm loving the post production sliding/panning effects lol
Damn. I wish I would have known about this when I had a Creative Zen Mosaic
It's nice to see Rockbox is still alive. Almost 20 years ago I got a Gigeabeat F40 and played with Rockbox

back when i was on high school i finished The Ultimate DOOM (ep 1 to 4) on an iPod 5th gen on Hurt me Plenty. it is one of my nerdiest achievement yet
Who needs a Switch to play on the go when you have this.
The universal rule of life is that if it has a screen and a processor it needs a port of doom
