I did this back in high school about 30 years ago with an old pair of Levi's my male cousin was going to throw out. I got so many compliments from ppl asking where I bought them! Great hack!
@@michelleschleis3095 My suggestion is to use the brown thread for denim, lay the seam down like she did and sew it flat very close to the seam, then sew again about a quarter inch from the seam so you get that double line of stitching.
I’ve been sewing for many years yet I couldn’t figure out how to alter pants and not lose the side pockets in the process. Thank you so much! Gotta run! I have so many of my pants to alter now!
OMG!! LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!! Needed this tutorial so badly. Have seen others but your way is the smartest and most effective so thank you thank you! Lost about 1/2 my body weight and hoped to be able to just alter my clothes to fit my new size. New to DIY and sewing. Am in love with upcycling what I already have. Now I can save my coins for cute shoes!😁🤩
EDIT w/ TIPS: I’d add only two things… (1) some folks might want to wait to adjust the length until all the other alterations are done since they’ll change how the pants hang and might end up too short (2) if the original pants are more than 1-2” too large at the waistband and seat, be aware that taking material out at the center back will move the side seams further and further back, so the pockets will be moving further back and the side seams might end up in a weird place, so don’t buy too oversized to start with I’m only a few minutes in and as a ‘professional seamstress’ wanted to say that as long as it doesn’t fall apart while you’re wearing it, there is no right way!! If it works for you, there’s no sewing police to tell you otherwise! Creativity is at the ❤️ of sewing - and paint splattering! First time here and excited to see what you actually do… 😁
You are wonderfully creative!! I sewn all my life and appreciate anyone that does - I’m also in to all things DIY. Great hip styling ideas. Never too old to inject something new and fresh into our wardrobe (I’m 72!). Thank you for sharing. I’m a huge fan.
Fun! I remember getting pants altered "quick and dirty" by the ladies in the back of the army/navy store. They could cut pants down quickly and for low cost. Sadly, they are long gone. Glad you're here with this tip!
THANK YOU! I work in IT and I'm always stuck trying to find pants that look business casual but femme with practicality like cargo pockets. This may be exactly what I needed! A lot of my office wears khakis but as a pear shaped lady that is a recipe for panty lines and, as the IT grunt, a lot of stains from crawling around on floors and wiring closets. Tailoring a good pair of cargos might just be my holy grail of pants. THANK YOU!
Oh my gosh!! I have been tapering my pants and just sewing up the sides. Thank you for this tutorial. It makes so much sense and it takes the same amount of time but actually ensures a beautiful fit.
You may not be a seamstress but you are an engineer, a natural talent at that. You have a strong feeling for how things work together in 3D. I'm so glad and thankful that you share that with us. I will use this! (being small waisted with hips and tiny legs)
You are seriously the best ! I’m 60 and learn so many fun and practical things from you . Been subscribed for years ! The iridescent top is fab - yes too cropped but almost perfect . Bet you could add a sheer layer to camouflage the open space . Love the way you made grunge go professional. I’m a realtor and comfort is key but so is style and this is fabulous.
Lol. You sew and shape just like I do! :) Love it. They look great on you. My mum has formally studied tailoring and freaks out whenever she sees my methods, plus the fact that they still work. V liberating that you're passing on these skills in your videos so that women get into reshaping clothes. One thing I'd add is make sure you use a denim needle for these tough fabrics, so your machine lasts longer :)
Best one yet.....I loved the simplicity of the hack and the wide variety of styling that you showed.....each outfit got better and better....and the one with the trench coat ....boom 💥
Yessss!!! Thank you Jesus! You are so clearly very competent!! Orly, I am so glad I started following you on Instagram after H&F ended - I loved your segments on there too. I was shocked when you showed this hack on IG stories. I have been sewing forever and have never thought about doing that. Now I want to go thrift shopping and find a pair of pants that are loose in the legs so I can try it. Great job!
You make perfect sense when you explain what you're doing. If I can follow you, anyone can, and that's more impressive than your sewing skills lol! Great hack to know for when I want something that isn't available in my size. Very cute styling ideas too. I would wear them all.
Orly, you are a genius! I just tapered the legs below the crotch seam. I never thought to cut the whole inseam off and adjust the rise of pants too. This is brilliant! So glad I didn't toss all my old clothes, I can't wait to sew another pair of my old jeans.
I love the cigarette leg pants and I never knew you are supposed to cut off the entire inseam! This is a great hack Orly and one that can will come into a lot of use. Thank you!
So happy I just stopped by today! I have 4 pairs of jeans that I've been putting off for at least six months! Now, with this little nugget, I will be sure to get them done this weekend!!! Thanks 😉😊👍
jeeeeezzzzeeeee okay, you gave me the confidence to just order big on a few pieces , and fix them where I know where I need to fix them. I have a smaller waist and bigger bottom, so it fits in the hips and I know im going to be swimming in the waist, im excited !!! so thank you so much!!!!!
I actually did this like 2 weeks ago on a pair of pants!! I came up with the idea on my own. Can't believe this is actually the right way to make too big pants the right size! I did it this way because the other (outer) parts had nice trim I didn't want to touch!!
Wow...this makes me so much less intimidated to do something like this. You make it look so easy...or at least easier than I would think something like this would be. Thanks for sharing your creativity.
I luv a good hack Orly. And you accomplished it. I have taken in my pants in a similar way for years but I usually just take in 1 size, no more than 2 and don't cut the fabric off (unless it's denim). I just pin the inseam and kinda sew in a U shape from cuff to cuff..., iron + I'm done. However I have never taken weight out of the back. That was ingenius to me. I love the idea of cutting the seam away, it saves so much time if u can spare the fabric. I may never rip a seam again... Lol So glad I watched, you may have just inspired me back to my machine 🤔 Thanks! 😊
Love. Love. Love. Thank you for showing this hack! I have to alter EVERYthing because I am 5'0' tall...sleeves, pants, hems and more. As a result, when I cut 2" from a sleeve or 4" from a pant or skirt, they need to be re-tapered so as not to appear "chopped" or too wide at the finished length. I've been blundering around and managing the taper myself, but this makes it so much easier--it's a wonderful, easy, method!
Your styling was great. Loved the camo desert pants. I do sew and that double seam is actually made wrong sides together & folded over, it's a lot of work & called a flat felled seam. Your hack is a perfect faux flat felled!!!! I'm impressed!!!
I can’t wait to try this! I have seen so many inadequate tutorials that simply run a tapered seam up the inseam which makes a weird, amateur-looking rolling of the final seam result. I am a crusty, old, self-taught sewer, so I speak your sewing language, but I would suggest using less technical terms like crotch seam instead of “rise” and perhaps briefly putting garment on wrong side out to orient the viewer about why you do what you do??? Love everything about your style/attitude/tempo, and really approachable videos!
Love, love, love what you did! I’ve been waiting for your tips on how to taper/resize pants. You’re so helpful and inspiring, oh and fun! thank you 🙏 💖

Great tutorial, your instructions were very clear and the video supported your explanation. Every single pair of jeans I wore in the ‘80s had this treatment.
Gosh, I made a little bit of money narrowing legs for others in the early 80 while I was in college, when pants legs became narrow. I had gotten the instruction from a teen magazine, but it did not require that you cut open the whole pants but to sew up the leg making opening narrow and stitch should meet up with existing seam in thigh area. This pretty cool, instruction for bring up the crotch on pants, because I love thrifting men trousers, but the crotch can be a total drop look. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.
ABSOLUTELY THEE BEST Pants altering video I’ve seen thus far! The way you matched up the different outfits with the camoflauge pants…🙌🏽❤️ definitely a new subscriber!
Love the video and the blue camo pants. The Desert Camo Uniform pants look so much better without the paint splatter, just my opinion. I go crazy for custom original military patterns on beautiful women whether at the range or the club. Thanks for sharing the cargo mods. I'll get started on my own now. 😉
Thank you so much. This was super helpful and easy. i bought some pants from Figs and would prefer to sew and adjust it rather than send it back and wait to order another pair 😊

Omg yes I've been waiting for this vid all my life! I have some many trousers to take in and dint want to kill the wait band, Thankyou.
Thank you for sharing. You make it look very easy and simple.
Love the video and the blue camo pants. The Desert Camo Uniform pants look so much better without the paint splatter, just my opinion. I go crazy for custom original military patterns on beautiful women whether at the range or the club. Thanks for sharing the cargo mods. I'll get started on my own now. 😉
Epic Orly!.. I have a stack of loose pants .. I needed this... ( I will try with mens trousers too... they are so much nicer cut than ladies)
Ohhh love love love this.. as it work so well with whatever you had pair them with… the blue one is so cute as well.. thanks
Great 👌 video. I just lost some weight but I'm not ready yet to invest in a new wardrobe. This hack is very useful
congratulations ! I'm so glad it will help!
This is such a useful hack! THANK YOU!!! Now I'm going shopping at hubby's closet!
cool. used to wear these a lot.. especially nice when the fabric is so worn and soft.
Perfect video for me today as I was wondering how to taper trousers and now I know how to do it x
I'm so glad!! it was meant to be :)
Thank you so much. This was super helpful and easy. i bought some pants from Figs and would prefer to sew and adjust it rather than send it back and wait to order another pair 😊
You’re a genius Orly!!!
I have been sewing for years and I actually learned something new thanks
