It's best suited for freight and cargo plus hilly areas. However, the bigger plan is to upgrade this but finance (loans) was the challenge. Let's continue to push for better stations, newer routes and affordable fees.

      @@osayiodigieh
      Yes and no. While the railway system in the "western world" has its own politics, the general trend is towards standard gauge because of the debut of high speed trains. Nobody sets out now to build narrow gauge railway lines although in places like Japan and Italy some are still in use for various reasons. In Nigeria, the politics is unmistakeably malicious, pointedly hatred-driven and toxic. If funding is the issue, then why was some of the foreign loans obtained in Nigeria's name used to build standard gauge railway to Niger Republic instead of eastern Nigeria? Of course those doing it and their agents would dare the targeted group to do their worst like all blacks do when they are in power, but no matter how you try to rationalise the disaster, this can only exacerbate the existing alienation among a section of the population.

    • @osayiodigieh
      @osayiodigieh 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RadioTV595 See, how infrastructure is funded especially by foreign countries has nothing to do with tribal sentiments. Donors will favor the most economically viable routes to fund first because that guarantees a quicker return so loans can be repaid. On numerous occasions, the then transport minister came on air to explain these things to Nigerians, but in our usual way we must blame tribal sentiments. I vividly recall when the minister complained about antics of local politicians and people to frustrate rail construction in their region, He personally stated that he'd prefer building in the South West than the South South where he comes from. So you see, we also contribute to these problems and we should also look inward and ask ourselves what we really want.
      On the topic of narrow guage, I stated very clearly that Standard guage is the ultimate plan for the eastern rail corridor but pending when funding can be secured they simply re-laid the narrow guage tracks to keep the corridor working. Considering where they were before, this is not as bad as we make it seem. We only need to push for better, just as I said.

    • @RadioTV595
      @RadioTV595 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@osayiodigieh
      Bro,
      Good points. However, you are wrong about foreign countries and "tribal sentiments". Foreign "donors" are guided by the wishes of the states they invest in and the determination of "most economically viable routes" depends on who is in power and what their bias is, but is definitely not value-neutral. How are the Warri-Itakpe- Abuja or Lagos to Niger republic lines more economically viable the Port Harcourt-Aba- Enugu etc. lines if not for toxic tribal politics? How viabiale is Ibadan =Abeokuta route compared to the Aba-Port Harcourt one? Have you not seen passengers hanging precariously on Aba-PH trains due to lack of space or is there another secret test of route viability in use? Besides, repayment of of loans is not done with fares collected from passengers on these routes but from oil rent collected in eastern Nigeria. So in a fragile multi-ethnic state like Nigeria "tribal sentiments" will need to be part of any economic evaluation of any application for foreign loans and its repayment. Right now, many people would struggle to understand why the eastern railway lines which were economically viable even in colonial times have suddenly and inexplicably lost viability under black rule if not because of malicious and toxic tribal politics.
      The re-laying of narrow gauge lines in the eastern railway corridor is still unjustifiable no matter how you attempt to rationalise it. Again since funding is the issue, how is it acceptable to use foreign loans obtained in the name of Nigeria to build modern standard gauge railway lines in Niger republic (which even recently closed its borders with Nigeria anyway without stoking local anger? If this blatant discrimination happened elsewhere, you all will of be waxing lyrical about racism, prejudice, bigotry etc, but as it is perpetrated by blacks on blacks in Nigeria, everyone is ok with it.
      * The minister lied about being frustrated from constructing railway in his region. He should admit that he was played for a fool using the promise of becoming the successor to Buhari as a bait. Do you also remember when he was dressed up in Fulani turban and publicly paraded as the new anointed saviour of Nigeria?

    The locomotive engines that operate in the Western and Northern Nigeria are very modern, and not easy to breakdown. Secondly, Port Harcourt is not far from where the train is now. In a real operating system, spear engines are supposed to be at the Port Harcourt "locomotive shop or shed as it was called before the Civil War", where an engine could be dispatched ASAP to travel to and tow the disabled engine and its passengers to its destination. What happens if the unarmed passengers are attacked by armed robbers?
    Also, before the train engine got disabled, the train driver must have radioed the Port Harcourt that they are having problems with the engine and wait for advice from the Chief Engineer in the shop.

Rather than use his office to better the transportation infrastructures in his region, he spent his time buiding railway links to Northern Nigeria all the way to Niger Republic! Speaking of governores, the money stolen by Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore A. Orji, Okezie Ikpeazu; the past governors of Delta State, Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State, Ebonyi State, Bayelsa State, Cross River State, Imo State, and Anambra State would have been more than enough to transform that region into the envy of the Nigeria, and Africa as a whole! Some of the criticisms are valid, some are not. Any train journey anywhere in the world can end in breakdowns, delays and cancellations. The coaches are not too bad in terms of space, cleanliness and even toileting facilities. The station buildings do not need to be demolished as they are rare architecture which can stand side by side with modernised station, harbouring films of old train travels.
    That said, it is very insensitive, probably provocative and an incitement to group anger for the Nigerian state and its operators to modernize railway stems in western and northern Nigeria while blatantly ignoring the east or baiting them with antiquated systems. This is what triggers insurrection in African states hence even the African military leaders (if they are wise) should counsel their political masters about the need for equitable treatment of national groups in a multi-ethnic state. An equitable approach to public policy is preferable to just turning a blind eye to injustice and expecting the army to go shooting at aggrieved national groups with imported guns.

    Nothing to celebrate in a system that favoured one above the other. The wickedness the leaders are exhibiting is very bad. What's good for the West, North is also good for the South South and East. They built a modern train stations with a standard gauge rail system in the West and ended up constructing narrow gauge in the East with no train station.

    This is a tale of 2 countries. If we complain of marginalization, them go say what is your governors doing? This has shown that they are not interested in our wellbeing. While they are building standard gauge trains track for other regions they are leaving us with narrow gauge tracks. They built modern trains stations for the other regions, they left us with colonial era train stations. They imported modern trains for Lagos Ibadan line and Abuja kaduna line but they gave us this world war 2 train that they used during Hitler’s war. Nigeria has abused us enough that our people are actually celebrating mediocrity. The old man is the only one there saying the truth. This Aba PH line will actually be more viable and profitable if they actually do it well. 😢
