    After seeing so many sheep builds through the shop it's refreshing to see guys like you do this with the DR. Keep it up and anybody commenting negatively who can't be a decent person and instead flame needs to deal with their own issues. It's your bike, if building and riding it makes you happy then fu** everyone else's opinions. This bike is awesome.

    The best dr650 I've seen. Spectacular! I love the combination between seat, tank and mask. They transform it into a very modern and tasteful motorcycle. Plus, fully functional, for even more versatility than the original model. Congratulations! Greetings from Argentina.

      Really cool build, makes it into a true adventure bike
      The weight goes with it though, it's probably at least 40kg heavier than mine (went the opposite route and made it into a big dirt bike, wouldn't go traveling with it though)

    Your bike turned out great! I have many similar mods. I put the Scott's steering stabilizer on mine. The DR doesn't need it, but it has saved me a couple of times and on the Hwy there is a notably less twitchy feel. Looking forward to following your adventures.

    • @GeordieMac
      @GeordieMac  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much, Jim! Thanks for checking it out. I’m very pleased with it. Adjusting the stabilizer has dramatic effect. I’m still discovering how I like to keep it set. Typically about 2. You have any further thoughts or expertise?

    • @jimsnyder1742
      @jimsnyder1742 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sand, mud, rocks, and gravel are all less of a shock to the front wheel. Everything is slowed down so you can manage it rather than wash out or be jerked away. Off-road I tend to crank it up. On road, 2 is probably plenty to control any knobby wiggle. I don't know the system you have but I think I have seen some Australian riders use them.

    Just a few tips for you, 1 the front brake line should run on the inside of the fork leg just before the calliper. 2 the Speedo cable should run on a lower angle out of the Speedo drive by the front wheel, it needs turning anti clockwise so the locator on the Speedo drive sits under the one on the fork leg.
    3 I think your gearing is way too low for your intended use, IMHO, 14 on the front with the standard rear, yes, a 45 or 46 rear with a 15 front, still passable but that gearing you are talking mountain goat territory, it is a 650 single not a 250, standard gearing has the engine spinning at roughly 4200 rpm, with your gearing probably on or a bit over 5000 rpm, they redline at 7500 and run out of power at close to 6500.
    It is just an opinion, nothing more, I find the DR makes good low down torque and 4000 rpm is a sweet spot, the high revs also impact the valve train a lot, lots of stress on the valves and valve seats.
    4 another good protection is a case saver , instead of the plastic front sprocket cover it is an aluminium cover that also prevents the cases if the chain derails or breaks, B&B in Aus make a very good one.
    Safe travels 👍👍👍👍

    The Dr is an awesome platform. You can really customize it to make it your own. My bike has similar upgrades but i did it slowly. As parts wore out our broke i upgraded with better aftermarket farkels.
    Looks like you have creature comforts, protection and handling covered. Next step is performance, .... 790 kit, valves, pumper carb... doesn't end but the best way to spend your time and money. Enjoy, my friend, and rubber side down

      Thanks for the great comment. Yeah, I researched all the adventure bikes and fell in love with the DR650. I think it’s the best platform for world travel mostly for the ability to find a mechanic to work on it should you need one. Although you probably won’t because it’s tried and true and built like a tank.

  • @nicoradv3923

    side panel for fairing, do those have screws into the tank to hold them down? There is some that do and as the tank expands it causes the screw holes to not line up after that happens.

    One thing you need to consider when modifying the DR is weight. It is very easy to add a lot of weight if you are not careful. On my build I managed to remove 8lbs while adding 13lbs for a net gain of only 5lbs while retaining the stock exhaust. I’m guessing your bike is 30+lbs over stock. That said, your FULL HOUSE DR looks very cool!

    • @GeordieMac

      Not sure. A few things that came off were heavy like the stock exhaust, and I definitely added a bunch of weight, but for the trip I’m doing, I think I need all the mods, so it is what it is. I’d love it to be lighter, but it’s already the lightest bike in it’s class. One of the reasons o chose it. Lighter has it’s cons, too, though. Pushed around me on the highway is one. We have a lot in common... I have a place in South Florida and my kid lives in JAX. Your config is pretty much the exact same as my BMW's... I have a 2018 1200GSA and a 2019 F850GSA. I took the 1200 on a 25,000km ride in South America. I took the F850 from Florida to Thailand... Both 5 month trips through crap and good. What we have in common is the set up. I use Lone Rider, I have a Pelican box on back with a latch to take off and put on/lock. I have had Sargent seats forever.... Ok to questions; I plan on taking bike on a long trip again alone to maybe Africa -- maybe elsewhere. Why did you get the DR? A KTM 690 is same weight, more power and might come a bit more steady. You spent a ton to get it up to a level where more expensive bikes come native. Last, after doing all this stuff -- do you think it complicated the mechanics at all? If I were in middle of Africa -- would the additions of hubs etc change the repairs for unskilled basic Motorcyle support? BTW: Beautiful build for the DR.

    • @GeordieMac
      @GeordieMac  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Gecko! Cool to hear from you. Thanks for watching and the interesting comments and questions. Some very impressive rides under your belt! I just completed 5,000 miles as a new rider and it was a wild ride! Intense. Great. Unbelievable. Never a single problem with the bike. I chose the Suzuki DR650 for four main reasons. First, I think it might be the most common or ubiquitous motorcycle at this size the world over. If not, it’s right up there. That means the greatest likelihood of finding repair help around the world. I’m not certain about Africa. I know they’re very common in Latin America, the Far East and Australia. The police in Guadalajara and Mazatlán, Mexico rode DR650s, which in addition to meaning they’re well known there, you score major points with the police and they love to talk bikes with you. Second, in terms of repairs and parts, the DR650 is a very simple machine and has not changed almost at all in about 25 years. No fuel injection, computer, anti lock brakes, etc. Simple carbureted engine. Third, weight. The KLR650 is about 80-100 pounds heavier. So is the Royal Enfield. Honda Africa Twin is way heavier. BMW, etc. KTM is about the same you say, but good luck finding anyone who knows anything about them or any parts. In remote places, there are many motorcycles and mechanics, but the vast, vast, vast majority of bikes are like 250s. I had a hard enough time finding tires. Got them shipped from Mexico City. Someone stole my gas line. None of four mechanics in Sayulita had the correct size for me. Finally, I think it’s cool to customize a bike to one’s own dreams and wishes. I like unique and different.

    • @GeordieMac
      @GeordieMac  ปีที่แล้ว

      I also tried to keep my bike less flashy. I would be more nervous with a big BMW, KTM or something that’s clearly very uncommon.

    • @GeordieMac
      @GeordieMac  ปีที่แล้ว

      I switched from lone rider to Mosko Moto Reckless 80 soft luggage and ditched the Pelican case. For long distance adventure travel, I fully think that’s the way to go. So much reduction in weight and wind resistance and kept the bike way better balanced.

    • @GeordieMac
      @GeordieMac  ปีที่แล้ว

      I chose all my mods and parts as not to complicate it. The wheels are the same stock size just far far superior. Maybe the electrical is a little more complex but I upgraded the battery, stator and regulator. Everything has a fuse. The upgraded exhaust is awesome and maintenance free. The Yenkro fairing, my absolute favorite part, is modular and comes apart easily. Tons of dash room. I’m biased, but I’d take my bike any day over anything else.

    As others have said, the DR650 is arguably the ultimate ADV platform in terms of value, practicality and reliability. You've built a truly fantastic adventure motorcycle. My only concern would be leaving such an obviously desirable looking machine unattended for more than a few minutes. • @jeffowen3068
      @jeffowen3068 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, this is a silly build.
      He spent way more money than any of the bikes you mentioned above to buy and mod a bike with less power and then added about 100lbs of gear to it, making it even slower. The pelican case alone literally adds like 10lbs high up….empty. It’s just not well thought out.
      This is an example of a build that when he goes to sell he’ll get a wake up call from the market. It’s worth about $6-7k.
      The fairing, stabilizer, heated grips and heated seat, and luggage alone are about $5k…. And add zero actual resale value to the bike.
      This is what happens when a middle-aged guy spends more time on forums reading about the mods he should do rather than riding his motorcycle to find out what he really needs. Kinda sad really, it’s clear he spent more time having other folks build his bike than riding it.
