That’s why gasoline starter motors have not gone totally extinct. They will start those cold diesels as long as they have fresh gas. Gas starter motors will spin the diesel long after batteries and electric starters have given up the ghost. Don’t get me wrong. I love electric starters. It’s the instant gratification I love. But a maintained gas starter motor will absolutely outlast an electric starter on cold mornings.

I used to drive an 84 9670 with a 350 Cummins. It was never that hard to start in the cold but the fuel pedal liked to get stuck. That ol cat hates the cold. Lol
I don't remember our 3406Bs being this hard to start either. Even in lower temps than 28°. A little tooter of ether would be better than ruining a starter.

I was just in loudon New Hampshire for a couple days stopped by to visit aunt she’s 92 and had my car serviced front end alignment the sun was out today it looked beautiful
that cold start reminds me of the cold starts of 1960's era locos here in the UK 10 minutes of smoke and noise before they finally warm up, British Rail would leave locos idling when ever not in use throughout the winter months to avoid it which eventually damaged the engines, great video

The only big thing Steve did was a rebuild in 2019(?) that's on the channel but otherwise that 3406B is pretty much as it was when it rolled off the line in 1984. That's why it's lasted as long as it has.

Wow man Orwell did not like the cold start but finaly got going after i think aboit 30 seconds but then got going good such a cool old Cabover but does not like the cold starts at all well stay safe out on the road and keep on trucking.
That GREEN apu can make that engine hot, or GLOWPLUGS, in the cilinder head, that works good when it is cold, and yes it safe battery and a start engine.

Hi Steve: Good to see you and the Nosebleed Special back at it. Couldn't help but notice your winter front. The reason the newer factory winter fronts have slots or they open from the center is to have air flow spread evenly over the fan blades. By only having the top or bottom open you only get air flow on the blades as they pass those openings, causing the blades to flex constantly whether your fan clutch is engaged or not. I have had fan blades crack and even break off because of this. You probably already know this but a word to the wise. Travel safely.

And the non-driver supervisor wondered why we had to be jumped off and starters replaced more in the winter. Had the ability the plug them in but "OH that wont help" is what non-driving supers would say. I think that you and the Gentry gang do a good job. Y'all work good together.

I just watched this video again for the 3rd time and I remembered that back in the mid 70's I worked in a small truck stop in central PA. When it was cold in the winter the drivers around there would be spraying the ether into the air intake to get their trucks started. I personally don't like to use ether on anything. On a positive note, getting the starter hot from cranking put some heat into the engine block. I like that you don't edit out the occasional blunder in your videos. Keep the video's coming. I don't know where you get the time or have the patients to do all that editing of hours of recordings along with putting in text and finding footage from older videos of yours or other references. It would be nice to see Orwell spruced up a little with those aluminum rims.
Hey Steve, I am honestly glad you kept after trying to start without letting up. I have read vehicle manuals on starting the engine and it's crank for 5 or 10 seconds then rest starter for 30 seconds and try again. if you did it that way you would still trying to get Orwell started. I loved ever minute of that startup knowing people sitting in their warm living rooms would condemn you for that startup. on the bright side, that's a good promo for the Green APU. as far as the escort car idea, what is the liability of escort car if something goes wrong. Google over height truck hits NJ turnpike overpass March of 2022. I was sitting in the WAWA on Dunns Mill road when the heavy haul came down Dunns Mill and then turning onto Rt206 in the direction of the truck stops. I remember looking at it and thinking that is huge and how did he get on Dunns Mill Rd. After the rig was already heading south on Rt206 the escort car with the height poles on it came down Dunns Mill Rd about 3 minutes behind what he was supposed to be escorting. So who was wrong here?

I have a 362. And those clutch cables are stiff in the winter it takes awhile to loosen up
