  • "The Ramallah Concert - Knowledge is the Beginning" is the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, where young Arabs and Jews perform and live side by side. It is a film about what music can do; the way it can transcend cultural barriers, bring people together, defeat prejudice and overcome religious and political differences. It also demonstrates the problems that crop up occasionally and how music can help people from different points of view find common ground. For Daniel Barenboim, founder of the ensemble, the orchestra is a symbol for what could be achieved in the Middle East.
    Release: 2005
    Language: English
    Subtitles: Spanish

Just listened today with ghosseflesh all over more than one time to an interview with Michael Barenboïm, that's where I heard about this concert. The interview is in German on ARD Audiothek. And I just share this documantary on social media, with my deepest Compassion for the people of Palestine, Gaza, Rafah, and wherever there. P.E.A.C.E. 🙏🕊🙏🕊🙏 Anything war 💔💔💔can do, P.E.A.C.E. can do better❤‍🩹❤🤍

Should be shown in all homes and schools ... everywhere! Maestro Barenboim is a real 21st Century hero ... the kind of man to be looked up to by young people who want to create a better world in spite of the political and religious nonsense which still has such influence, sadly. The real and important message here is on a much higher plane and we should all salute it and encourage others to do the same!

I have watched this film over and over. I also play it for my college non-music-major students. What a great work!

As a serious high art classical musician with an international reputation and a visual artist "Old Master", I am both very sad and very happy. It's 15 May 2024. I'm sad because of IzaN-Zionism and genocide extermination holocaust as man's inhumanity to man takes over from "reverance for life", and happy because Israel is going through its death throes because injustice and cruelty will not stand! Truth will out. Danny is a colleague and I miss Said very much, as I do John Pilger and Julian Assange, among other champions of truth and humanity. As an American I am ashamed to be complicit in genocide but happy and proud of the youth of America and the whole world! Serious high art classical music and music-making makes people better human beings. What is love? bell hooks describes and defines it in her beautiful book, "all about love" ( spoiler alert: it's not ONLY about romantic love!) Baremboim and Said's work has been interrupted but NEVER killed off! From the river to the sea serious high art classical music will overcome man's inhumanity to man!

This film was one of the best things I've ever watched on television. Shown once on Ovation TV years ago. I'm glad to have found it here. Thank you.

The film begins as if there were aborigines hunting some wild animal in the jungle; turns out that they were some fine young musicians hunting a lost soccer ball :-).
